First time and it was an absolutely Outstanding meal!! The chef creates flavors that leave you craving more. The ribeye was so incredible tender it had layers like a croissant, melted in your mouth with a flavorful, lightly chard crust, cooked to perfection! We had the Steak Tartare (out of this world flavor combination with the house-made vinegar chips , Sallops, Caesar salad, Ribeye with mac & cheese, and asparagus with sauce we couldn't get enough of. Put it on the scallops and cleaned the plate with the bread it was so good! Bananas Foster (beautifully prepared table side)! The bartenders were impeccable as well. The mule and dirty martini were made to perfection,. The service was top-notch. I was looking for a special venue for our wedding anniversary dinner. For the past five years, we've usually gone to the Steakhouse at Silver Reef, but after seeing a tomahawk on this menu, I thought we should try a new place for this year's celebration. When we arrived, we were seated in their "Cove," which had been suggested by the woman who took our reservation over the phone as an intimate dining experience. My first impression of the restaurant was that I liked the "steakhouse vibe." However, the Cove where we were seated felt more like bar seating than an actual dining area. The tables were small--better suited for small plates and drinks, not a full dinner. We were greeted right away by our server. She was very friendly, but throughout the service, I didn't quite understand her dry sense of humor. I asked about the wine options, and she suggested a cab. I asked for a tasting, which I didn't think was an uncommon request before ordering a glass. She mentioned (possibly joking) that the first sample was free, but after that, they would have to charge me. I found that comment a bit off-putting and didn't feel encouraged to order a drink after that. Since they only had two cabs and I wasn't familiar with either, I didn't think asking to try one was unreasonable. I ended up trying her recommendation but didn't like it. At that point, I didn't feel comfortable asking for another sample, so I just asked her to check with the bartender and bring me whatever he recommended. I ordered the pork tomahawk, again based on her recommendation, and my husband ordered the aged New York. Shortly after, she returned to tell me the pork tomahawk had just sold out. Our reservation was at 5:30 PM, so it seemed early for a popular item to already be unavailable. By then, I was a bit over it and ordered the flat iron 8 oz marinated steak instead. While we waited for our appetizers, we were served bread rolls with garlic butter. Unfortunately, the rolls were very hard and dry--even the butter didn't help. Neither of us took more than one bite. We both ordered our steaks medium, but my husband's New York was definitely undercooked compared to mine--it was very red in the center rather than pink. After trying my steak, I thought some steak sauce might help, so I asked for A1. Our server told us they charge for their "house A1" sauce. Tip: don't order it if you're expecting traditional A1. It tasted more like barbecue sauce--too sweet and not tangy enough to resemble A1 (in my opinion). I didn't even use it after trying it, so it felt like a waste of $2. The food overall was okay, just not worth the price. My husband even said he's had better steak at Texas Roadhouse for half the price. My steak was around $35, and my husband's was about $56. The sides were good, but we've both definitely had better steaks. My husband mentioned his had a lot of tough, chewy fat that he had to cut around. We ordered two appetizers and two entrées, each with a starch and a vegetable. The steaks were disappointing, to say the least, though the sides were solid. I also couldn't even finish my glass of wine. Overall, it was nice to try something new, but I probably wouldn't go back. If we did, it would likely be to try their happy hour menu--especially the Philly cheesesteak. There's a lot of potential here, but the execution just didn't deliver. First off we came here on a Thursday assuming it may be to busy Friday. Upon arriving at 5:30 for our reservation it was 1/4 full. I had high expectations after several friend's reviews. I'm going to get right to it. The staff were slow and very un attentive. Took forever to take our order, refill water or wine. Pretty much non existent through the entire meal Tables are placed to close together in some areas. Which makes for uncomfortable conversations. Unless you turn up the music. Owner was there making rounds, which was nice. She definitely cared and wants the restaurant to succeed. It just seems a bit off. Not sure if it's the servers or the environment. Food was stellar though. I will not complain about that. All of our meals were worth the $$$ Will we come back? It's a 35 min drive. So probably not. Would I recommend it to locals there yes. Celebrated Valentines Day here. Reservations were made well in advance and we're easy. Parking can be an issue with downtown a happening place. Ordered drinks and a salad to start off with. Both ordered ribeye steaks, mine with mashed potatoes and glazed carrots, hers with Mac and cheese and broccoli. Steaks were cooked perfectly to order. She loved her sides. Our first time dining at Cask & Cleaver was a sheer delight. Our meals were incredible. I had the Bourbon Braised Pork Short Ribs with mashed potatoes and they were without a doubt the best ribs I have ever had. The carrots on the side were also outstanding. The Caesar Salad was very large and between that and the dinner rolls served with a very flavorful cinnamon butter, I ended up taking most of my dinner home. My friend had the Marinated Flat Iron Steak, which was also delicious, as were the brussel sprouts. I love the dining room, they opened up a door during dinner hour and after that it was very comfortable, although also noisy. Our server was very attentive and friendly. This is one of the top five meals I have ever had at a restaurant, so Cask & Cleaver will be our first choice for a special occasion, nowhere else in the Skagit Valley even comes close for fine dining, in fact there is not even a close second. Cask & Cleaver seems to be trying very hard to create a fine-dining experience. Unfortunately, the prices made it to fine dining well before the food did. There also seemed to be considerably more Clever going on with the menu descriptions than Cleaver going on in the kitchen. My wife ordered the "Airplane Chicken." When we asked our server what exactly made a chicken an airplane chicken, it was described as a "cut of chicken with the wing attached so that it has both light and dark meat." Cue my eye roll. Apparently aviation and chicken anatomy have both evolved considerably since the last time I checked. At best, this was less "Airplane Chicken" and more "Chicken, but we left the wing on and gave it a marketing department." Her chicken was alright, but the vegetables tasted like they had been sautéed with burnt garlic from a jar. Burnt garlic is certainly a flavor. I'm just not convinced it's one you should intentionally charge fine-dining prices for. I ordered the "Tomahawk Porkchop." The menu description was a little confusing because it also mentioned pork tenderloin. Naturally, I pictured some magnificent Flintstones-sized pork chop--a giant rib attached to a thick, beautiful piece of tenderloin arriving at the table with its own gravitational field. Well, you know what they say about assuming. What arrived looked more like a lollipop lamb chop that had experienced a difficult childhood, accompanied by a separate pork tenderloin buried under a thick, chunky, sticky sauce. I initially thought the sauce was some sort of garnish. After excavating through it and discovering the tenderloin underneath, I reread the menu description. "Oooohhhh...THAT'S what they meant." Mystery solved. Unfortunately, solving the mystery didn't improve the pork. Both the tiny "tomahawk" and the tenderloin were mediocre at best. Once again, the description was considerably more Clever than what the Cleaver ultimately produced. I also ordered their "gourmet mac and cheese." It was okay. I make considerably better mac and cheese at home, but credit where credit is due: at least it didn't taste like it came out of a box. The word "gourmet," however, may have been doing some fairly heavy lifting. Then came the Guinness. I love a good Guinness, partly because of my Irish heritage, but a good Guinness starts with a proper pour. I asked our server if they knew how to properly pour one. I was told they didn't have Guinness glasses but had something close. Great, I thought--they at least know there is such a thing as a proper Guinness glass. Then things got weird. The bartender started talking about pouring Guinness over the back of a spoon and something else I couldn't quite understand. A spoon? At that point I figured, what the heck, I was thirsty. The resulting Guinness confirmed that somebody behind the bar needs to enroll in Bartending 101 and stay for the chapter titled "How to Pour a Guinness." No spoon required. That pretty much sums up our experience with Cask & Cleaver. There is nothing fundamentally terrible here. The food was alright. The mac and cheese was alright. The service was alright. If this were a casual neighborhood restaurant charging casual neighborhood prices, I probably wouldn't have much to complain about. But Cask & Cleaver presents itself--and prices itself--as something approaching fine dining. Once you're charging those prices, the clever names, elaborate menu descriptions, presentation, ingredients, execution, and bar service all need to support the experience you're selling. They didn't. We weren't expecting a Michelin star, but for the prices we expected something considerably closer to one. Instead, I'd award our meal about half a star. Unfortunately, it would be a Discount Tire half-star. Maybe they should consider changing the name to Cask & Clever--because the marketing was considerably better than the meal. read more

We were first time customers of Cask and Cleaver. Celebrating our birthdays but not looking for any special treatment. We wanted to have a steak dinner and were not disappointed. The service was great. Our server Jenn/Jennifer was outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable, extremely outgoing and spoke with us sincerely. Our filets were cooked perfectly. Our sides of asparagus, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and Brussel sprouts were a great side. The wine list was fine but could use some new additions. Our choice was a Washington Merlot went well with our steaks. Look forward to returning sometime soon. Again, kudos to Jenn our server she was a great enhancement to our dining. read more

We started with the Twice Baked Potato Appetizer. The Potato skin part was ice cold and it appeared they just put their whipped mashed potatoes on top which were warm. Making it obvious the bottom portion was pre-cooked. They also lacked any seasoning, no salt or pepper. The cold skins could have really used salt. Entrees - My husband had the ribeye, he asked for medium rare and it was medium. I had the chicken which was over done making it dry. We both had the roasted carrots which were also ice cold. "Roasted" would give one the impression they were hot or warm. We ended with the Bananas Foster. Unfortunately the bananas were not Left in the sugar and alcohol long enough to get that thick carmelization. So when she poured it on the ice cream we had instant soup. Unfortunately we will not be back. There are plenty of steakhouses in the area that we have had excellent quality at. For the cost we just want to assure we are getting decent quality. Wow! What a great happy hour! The prices are just right for an afternoon snack! The service was good and the atmosphere is always cozy in this building. We ordered the steak bites. The steak was cooked perfectly and the sauce was very good. The meatballs also tasted good....they came with a marinara sauce and I think there were six of them? The fish tacos were probably my favorite, however, the only thing that I would change, is to have cilantro instead of parsley on the fish tacos. Food was excellent, easily the best restaurant in Mount Vernon, I see that the owner reads all of these reviews so a few things to recommend. First off you have marketed to Skagit Valley perfect, I have had better steaks but this is the best $60 steak ive ever had, I dont think a $100 per steak place will probably not make it in Skagit, this is a $80 -$90 dollar steak with two sides of $60, dont change this or lower quality. It is tempting to raise prices or lower quality but your restaurant is packed hopefully this is a enough to keep things the same. We ate here 2 times... the first time we each had the 8oz sirloin med rare, they came out overly charred well done. The sauce on top was overly salty if using capers the chef needs to keep the salt at bay. The 2nd time was for a birthday dinner went with the tenderloin med rare, it was raw... my partner had the New York steak med it was cold and tuff... the quality of the meat is not that of a good steak house... our company had very similar reviews about their steaks the tenderloin and the wague steaks were both raw... the appetizers salads and sides were all good. Just disappointed in steaks. The service was a three out of five. The host was fabulous. It is a little loud, but the tables and seating are comfortable. read more

Seems like they are on the verge of being a great place. My wife had the filet and I got the ribeye. Both were obviously top quality cuts of meat and cooked properly. She would have much preferred no "Marsala gravy" on the filet - not their fault of course, personal preference - and now she knows better if we ever come back. The ribeye was vastly under-seasoned IMO, but that's also a matter of personal taste and wouldn't have been worth mentioning had there been salt and pepper on the table, which there wasn't. I guess it's a thing with top tier restaurants, and that's the look they are going for. Salt and pepper would have helped the mash potato side as well. They should really have salt and pepper on the table... The service was odd. It started out normal enough, but by the end our server had totally forgotten about us. We actually had to leave the little side-room that were in and chase down a manager type to pay our bill. Could be because a larger party came in and she got all tied up with their orders, etc. I really do think that she might have literally forgotten about us. I'm pretty sure that we could have dined and dashed and nobody would have noticed. So in the end it's a decent place obviously aspiring to be something more. We wouldn't make a special trip to Mount Vernon for it, but would certainly consider it again if we're in town. read more

My son is non verbal autistic and I selected private dining and something happened in the system and it didn't show but they were so accommodating with it and the food was amazing! Oh my goodness the braised carrots we will definitely be back, everyone loved their food and desserts. The creme bruleeonly complaint was my reservation was at 8 and they didn't start sitting us, at the table in main not the private one they fixed, until about 8:30 so other than not being sat at our time everything was amazing and we will be back!!! Atmosphere is nice and cozy in downtown Mt.Vernon. Bartender Efren made PERFECT martinis for us ;) Food could use a bit more attention though. Steak tartare was excellent with house made chips seasoned perfectly. Potato skins were a hit but meatballs were overcooked. Garlic fries a little under cooked and need to be crispier. Steak nachos definitely need more steak/cheese on them. But again these are easy fixes and if customers give honest feedback on what they can improve on Cask & Cleaver will be a great addition to downtown Mt. I went to the restaurant alone today, and the waitress who served me, a white girl with two braids, treated me quite differently compared to the other white customers around me. I am the only Asian in the restaurant, and it was very clear that her attitude toward me was noticeably less friendly and attentive. She didn't inform me beforehand that the sauce for my filet mignon contained wine. When I asked for a replacement, she seemed impatient and reluctant. After bringing the new steak, she didn't even ask if I needed a new set of silverware. Or ask if I need salt or pepper. Throughout the meal, she barely checked on me but interacted frequently and warmly with the two nearby white tables. Additionally, the beef tartare didn't taste fresh and had a strong oxidized blood taste. read more

Me and my wife called 30 min before arrival asking if bringing a stroller would be fine. They responded and said it's no problem that we would be able to come in. As soon as we got there it was a problem and inconvenient to understand that the table that is most convenient for a stroller was reserved the entire time and we were not allowed a spot. To me seemed like they took their chances in brining in profit with us just to realize they had that table reserved the entire time. read more

We desperately wanted this place to be good and it did not disappoint. There is literally no place in Mount Vernon where you can get a decent steak. Both of our steaks were cooked and seasoned perfectly to our liking. The craft cocktails and service were excellent. Our server Jueles went above and beyond for us. She made our dining experience special. My only negative and its minor is that the bourbon offering is a bit pedestrian. The place was slammed while we were there and our food still came out timely and hot. Great job guys....we will be back. As a side note, the noise level is high, so be prepared for that. read more

My wife and I decided to give Cask & Cleaver a try tonight...... First off, the atmosphere was very pleasant. It was like stepping back into the 1930s, in a Chicago speakeasy. Wood paneling on the walls, old-fashioned bar and decor. Sinatra, Dean Martin and Louis Armstrong playing in the background. The service was exemplary. Our server, Amber was very courteous and made us feel like we were regular customers that she'd known for years. At first, we were seated at a small table by the window, but after about 10 minutes, my wife was freezing. We mentioned it to one of the hostesses and the manager (at least I believe she was the manager) came over, apologized, and immediately moved us to more comfortable seating. Now for the food: Nothing short of incredible. My wife had the filet mignon and declared that it was the best she had ever had. My New York strip was cooked perfectly and easily one of the top three steaks I've ever tasted. Cooked and seasoned to perfection. The side dishes were amazing. Roasted sweet potatoes for me and potatoes au gratin for her. Neither of us could pick our favorite, so we ended up constantly eating off of each other's plates. The prices were very reasonable for the quality of food and service. We cannot recommend Cask & Cleaver highly enough. I assure you that we will be back soon and often. It's great to have a new steakhouse in Mount Vernon, but the Cask & Cleaver does have some kinks to work out. The restaurant was packed, but we were seated fairly close to the time of our reservation. The server brought out some complimentary cheddar/herb biscuits that were delicious and served warm. The house Jack salad was a disappointment. Covered in fresh coriander, the taste overwhelmed the salad. I ended up picking it off and putting it to the side. My husband had the loaded baked potato soup, delicious and hot. There was a huge gap in time between our starters and entrees (the server apologized), which can be chalked up to the restaurant only being officially open for one week. However, once our entrees arrived, my husband's roasted carrots were cold. And, once again, the carrots were covered with coriander leaves, which we all pushed to the side. My husband never did receive his mashed potatoes. Taking a bite of his filet mignon, I felt it should be more tender. In fact, I felt the filet had almost the same degree of toughness as the sirloin that our friend ordered. The menu warns that the wagyu has to sit, but the kitchen needs to work on its timing. My entree arrived 5 minutes later. The herb butter sitting on top was not melted; however, my roasted carrots were warm and delicious. One bite into my steak, ordered medium, showed that it was blood red rare. I sent it back to the kitchen for refiring, encouraging my companions to start. The steak arrived about 5 minutes later, now medium rare. Unfortunately, my carrots were now cold. The hit of the night was the mac and cheese side, served in a piping hot cast-iron skillet, with a wonderful smoky flavor. Our server again apologized for my steak and offered either a free dessert or a discount on my meal. Unfortunately, she failed to follow up on the promise, instead presenting us with the bill without asking about dessert or the discount. Keeping in mind that the restaurant is only one week out from the official open date, we will try it again on a weeknight after they have had more practice. The concept is excellent! read more
