It was paired with a kale+corn+sweet plantain concoction that was like a big O in your mouth. The sweet/savory combo was everything. Their chicken nachos are my go to. Cascalote Latin Bistro is absolutely fantastic and I'm glad that it's doing well after it relocated. I went with my cousin here for brunch and we both loved what we got. We started off with margaritas (just have to for a Sunday brunch) and they did not disappoint- my favorite was the maracuya one. As for the mains, I had the Benedict crab cakes and my cousin had the enchiladas. We also shared an order of the Brazilian cheesy bread which was really tasty (carbs + cheese, what's not to love)? There was a generous amount of crab given in my main and my cousin's enchiladas had a really nice kick to it. I dislike leaving negative reviews, but I feel compelled to share my recent experience at Casalote Latin Bistro, where we rented the back area for a sisterhood event. Unfortunately, I left feeling disappointed and personally disrespected by a staff member who I later learned is the owner's daughter. As an Afro-Latina who presents as African American, I couldn't help but notice a shift in how I was treated compared to others in my group. I ordered the Costillitas Benedicto, which was described as slow-braised short rib, sweet corn arepa, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, and maduros. What I received was not as described (see video below): * The eggs were fully cooked, not poached. * The meat resembled ropa vieja (shredded beef), not slow-braised rib with a bone. * The hollandaise sauce was an unexpected orange color and extremely spicy none of which was stated on the menu. Due to all of these issues, I sent the dish back. I was told I could order something else from our prix fixe menu, but I felt so uncomfortable and turned off by the experience that I didn't want to risk another poor or potentially tampered-with dish. Later, I was told I'd still be charged for the original meal I returned. Reluctantly, I agreed to the French toast but asked for the syrup on the side, as another guest had received hers pre-drenched and was unhappy about it. When I approached the waitress with this simple request, she didn't make eye contact, stared at her tablet, and responded curtly: "That's how it comes." I let her know that her tone felt unnecessary, and she replied, "Okay, if you feel like that, beloved." She continued in a passive-aggressive manner, repeating "that was your experience, beloved" without ever looking at me. I then overheard her speaking in Spanish to another guest, saying she would not serve me again. She proceeded to offer that guest a complimentary shot, thanking her for being "a good patron." This entire interaction felt unprofessional, dismissive, and frankly, targeted. The poor food quality, lack of transparency on the menu, and passive hostility from the waitress (especially toward a paying customer who did not present as Latinx) made me feel unwelcome and disrespected. I will not be returning to Casalote and recommend they re-evaluate not only how they present their dishes, but how they treat their guests especially those who don't "look" like the culture they serve. read more

I also tried my friends which was passion fruit and I did like that one better. For our next drinks my friend order the same one I went with Mango. The mango margarita with the tamarinn rims was yummy and less sweet compare to the tamarindo. However, we were two drinks in and personally the margaritas weren't as strong for my liking. For food I got the desayuno de rancho and my friend got steak tacos and it was yummy portions was a decent size but I was still hungry after so we got Brazilian cheese bread and that was pretty good. after eating we were not as lit as we wanted to be so we decided to do shots instead since we felt the drinks weren't as strong. We saw mango flights online and wanted to try them they come in 4 and 6 we got a total of 5 shots each! What an excellent lunch. Enough said, but I'll tell you more. They had burrito on the menu, but I didn't see a shrimp one, so I asked and she said no problem. Delicious. It contained fresh shrimp that had first been sautéed in a sauce, perhaps garlic based, then placed within a rice and avocado tortilla. Green sauce available, but I'm a lightweight. Wow! Excellent choice for brunch. A group of alumni from Connecticut College gathered for a holiday brunch and this was a perfect setting with beautiful artwork and awesome service. Be prepared for a small space so if you have a large group you will take up the entire restaurant but it is wi detail to feel as if the place is all yours. I visited with my cousins for a Saturday night dinner and it's definitely a VIBE! We made reservations ahead of time which is highly suggested since the inside is small and then they have outdoor seating too with heaters. Upon walking in, we were immediately greeted by the staff and seated. The menu is found on a scannable QR code. My cousin and I started off with a mango margarita as well as the butterfly margarita. Both were flavorful, but not strong enough so the next drink we ordered we made sure it had a punch to it. The waitress suggested the tamarind margarita which was a bit stronger so we were satisfied. For our entrees, my cousins ordered chicken and shrimp fajitas and I ordered the shrimp tacos, french fries and platanos. Everything was flavorful and a nice portion size. As an app, we ordered the guac and chips which was super fresh! One of my top favorite guacs for sure! One of the reasons why my cousin chose this place was for their mango shot flight which you can get 4 or 6. We ordered 4 which was $32. The shots were good but it didn't really taste like liquor, I tasted more of the tamarind. To end our night, we decided to order 2 shots of house tequila for $13 each. Casamigos shots would've been $17 each which is crazy but we're in NY so I expected it. After 3 shots and two drinks each, we didn't feel tipsy at all. Maybe because we have a high tolerance? I had a good time coming here for the first time after visiting Museo del Barrio nearby. The service was great, Austin our server took great care of us, he was attentive, kind and 10/10 across the board even spoke a bit of Spanish. I def would recommend anyone come here and be sure to try the coconut mojito, honestly I thought the creaminess of coconut in a dream would be a night mare but it's by far the best drink I've had this year. I especially love how the empanadas were packed with meat, the chef and team were not greedy like other companies are and the fact that when you took it a bite the empanada wasn't scorching hot, it was in between hot and warm. I ordered the birria taco which I'm surprised, the consomé was packed with FLAVOR, and the taco meat was generous! Honestly best birria taco I've had so far, I've always wondered why is this style taco has been popular since at other restaurants the consomé looks like oil and taste like nothing but this one is for the books! And for the arepa? Taste just like how my fam would make it, it's amazing and the pairing with pickled onions is *chef's kiss*... sweet but also a dash of acidic flavor. I would only give 3 stars on the basis of the menu is MUCH smaller now and this business should've updated that to reflect the present day, majority of the photos are from a larger menu. #2 There is a automatic high % gratitude, and I feel this takes away from genuinely being grateful, even if this place deserves to be tipper on the higher amount. Cascalote! How have I walked past this gem so many times and not obliged before now? Truthfully, it's easy to miss. A small unassuming spot located directly opposite one of the most popular steakhouses in Harlem. This is likely why they're easy to miss. The spot is cozy with about 20 seats. Walking in there is a warm and inviting feel. Not to mention toasty. Which was perfect considering the brisk and breezy November temps. The restaurant is colorful and vibrant with lots of cool artwork on the walls. My sister and I arrived at 3pm on a Friday. We were the first and only guest until a larger group arrived about 30 minutes later. We opted for apps and drinks. Happy hour cocktails are $9. I regret not snapping pics of our dishes. They were beautifully presented - right on par with a downtown 5 star. The crab cake was delish. It came with a finely grated crispy potato topping and an incredible aioli. Arroz con morro was fresh, soft and fluffy. Arepas with short ribs, maduros with maple glaze and sauteed garlic spinach rounded out our meal. Every bite was perfect. And I have to give props to Patsy - our host, server and bartender - She is sweet, kind and funny. She also makes a mean mango margarita! We were so impressed with Cascalote that we told her we'd be back that next day. Not quite so soon. But definitely in the near future! JUST GO! In 2019 my bf&I were in search of a brunch spot around the area and decided to walk around. With little hope and energy left, we noticed this hidden gem and gave it a try. Best decision ever. We come here usually on the weekends for dinner and although they've been getting busier these days, they do their best to get you seated right away! For food, we order our usual which is "Mata cuatro and chuleta al pastor" with the delish tampiña mezcal drinks. I mean COME ON, TAMARINDO AND PINEAPPLE, to die for. East Harlem isn't usually a destination where people think of for a food adventure, since when you're in the neighborhood the vibe it gives off is definitely differently from places like the East/West village or Williamsburg for instance. But I am so glad that we stumbled upon this family owned restaurant that served some incredible, authentic Mexican food on the corner of 103rd and 2nd avenue. Came here at 11am on a Sunday for brunch in a party of 2, and we were the only table that was served for that particular morning. I ordered the Cascalote Burger ($20 - this is INCREDIBLE) and my brother ordered the Eggs benedict ($20). Total bill came to ~$50 tax and tip included. For a start the burger - I must say I've had a lot of burgers in NYC, and this burger ranks as one of the top three that I've ever had in NYC. The potato buns were nicely toasted, with a thick beef patty cooked medium rare that was seasoned with a lot of Mexican spices, so it really brought out the meaty flavor of the patty. In the burger, they had a really thick chipotle aioli, slices of avocado, melted cheese, and seared onions which really added more flavor to the burgers. Oh, and this thing was pretty big, I was so full after finishing just the burger! What an incredible fusion approach to a burger, and I think if I am craving for a burger I have my spot at Cascalote now! My brother also enjoyed his eggs Benedict, and highly complimented the sauce and the carne asada that it came with. This place is incredible, and I hope low key family places like Cascalote can deserve the attention because they serve some incredible food, and I hope with more restaurants like Cascalote they lead East Harlem into the next food mecca of NYC! read more

Met a friend here as I was in the area. A small and cosy restaurant with great service. The restaurant fits about 20-25 people and we were lucky enough to get a table for 5 with no prior reservation. We tried out a couple of mains from their menu - burger, huevos rancheros, their daily chorizo special and a side of Brussels Sprouts with chorizo. All were delicious and we finished it all. The chorizo was so nice and spicy, I would definitely order it again. The food took awhile to come out however the restaurant was basically almost full when we were there. I also tried their coconut mojito. A little bit on the sweet side but it was nice and enjoyable. Three mains, a side and 4 drinks came at $140 for the table which wasn't too bad. The place might not be stroller friendly unless you have one of those collapsible ones as space is a bit tight. read more

How dare you turning it around instead of apologizing and train your rude waitress. Luckily is not the only place around to eat. After all the support during the pandemic your staff should be glad people come to your place, enough is enough I won't support neither tolerate rude waitresses. Starting with the bad! We Ordered 2 mango margaritas, according to there menu it's listed as "Fresh Mango Puree, Tequila Reposado, Agave Néctar, Fresh Lime Juice" No where does it say "tajin" spice on the rim. The Manager asked if she can strain the drink and return it.....we kindly refused and requested a classic margarita. To our shock the mango margaritas were on the bill totaling 28$. We requested the manager and she responded with "once the drinks touch the table they are no refunds" after 5mins of back and fourth the drinks were taken off. Totally unacceptable. We spent over 350$ mind you. The Service is the reason I gotta give 2 stars and not more, the waiter once we were sat and the order was taken she only came to check on us 1 time. We had a item charged to our bill that we never received, it was fixed but only after a rather rude discussion. Definitely felt like because gratuity was included that the service was not needed. Food was great, but little portions and 34$ for carne asada 12oz skirt steak with quarter sized tostonas (about7 pieces) isn't really worth it in my opinion. The lunch special Bistic with sautéed onions was really good $25 with a large portion of rice and beans. Due to the unprofessionalism, I won't be returning. read more

On a Thursday evening around 5:30pm, my friend and I walked in and were seated immediately (no wait, yay!) Food: Al pastor taco (5/5 - would DEFINITELY get again) Arroz con pollo (4/5) Drink: Horchata (4/5) I would get the two dishes that I got again. Absolutely. Delicious. Al pastor taco - the meat is a flavor party in your mouth, cooked to a delightful perfection. It was soft and warm and had such a strong flavor to it. I highly recommend this dish! Arroz con pollo was so tasty too. It comes with two pieces of fried chicken sitting on a general helping of rice. Both the fried chicken and rice were satisfying. The horchata was very refreshing, especially after the walk in the heat to the restaurant. Service: The staff was super friendly and very attentive. Our food came out quickly. The people working here looked happy to be here. Ambience: Very casual and cozy - a great place to catch up with a friend! The place never got too loud so I was able to have good conversation with my friend throughout the dinner. There are few restaurants out there that give consistent and exceptional quality, taste, and energy. My husband got the enchiladas in the salsa verde with a side of esquite on the side (Mexican street corn). This dish comes with four nicely sized chicken stuffed enchilada with salsa verde poured on top. This is a simple dish but with an abundance of flavor. The sauce is simply outstanding. They need to bottle it!! The esquites comes served off the cob and sits inside a corn husk on the plate. The presentation is super thoughtful, as it's ready to eat without all the fuss and corn between your teeth, which is both considerate and deliberate. My daughter, who is ten, got the pork chop dish. It comes with sautéed shaved brussel sprouts and rice. She asked for maduro on the side, because she eats like a grown man. She ate it all - she don't play when it comes to food-she's a foodie in the making. The golden glistening brown pork chop on the bone always looks like heaven. It's thick but not chewy or dry, and sits on top of the brussles like a gift on your plate. I wanted something light so got the salmon tostados as my entree and ate some of my daughters brussels. If you like salmon tartare then this is for you. WOW! The elevation and creativity of this dish is next level. With every crunchy bite of tostado there is mouth full of silky finely diced salmon, topped with a ginger honey aioli. What?! Excellence in each bite. I grabbed a flan to go, which is the BEST flan I have ever had. There is a syruped like espresso drizzle, and the garnished sliced strawberry that sits on top is somehow the best and freshest tasting strawberry every time I order it. Consistency! Obsessed! Drinks are always fantastic and need their own social media following. Everything is freshly squeezed so expect super crisp, natural, fresh tasting flavor profiles in anything ordered. Only issue is deciding what flavor margarita you'll be drinking. Decisions, decisions. Music is lit, as if the food doesn't already make you want to dance. Lighting was also perfect last night. Seems they added a red light bulb to one of their high hats. So you get the right amount of sexy dimmed lighting, but not so dim that you can't see. Lighting is important and some places over do the dim light and that's when the phone flashlights bust out to read the menu. Hate that. The team of wait staff was also exceptional last night. Attentive, friendly and speedy. We ended the evening with generous complimentary tequilla shots. Not sure there is a better way to wrap up a delicious Mexican dinner. Thanks Cascalote, you never cease to impress me. See you soon, obviously. PS- last night I walked in without a reservation, and knew I was risking it when I did, but I live local so took the chance.
