I will preface this with I did not actually go on the Caverns tour, so I cannot speak to the actual quality of the tour or cavern itself, but if the grounds or other Yelp reviews are any indication, I don't think I was missing out on much.
I stopped in because I was driving back to Austin from San Antonio and saw that it wasn't too much of a drive off of I-10 from where I was. The caverns are annoyingly far off the highway down these little ranch roads that if it weren't for the signage you would swear you'd made a very wrong turn (on the road and in life).
When I finally arrived at the ticket office it was 10mins before the 3pm tour (which is the last of the day) and I was greeted by a kitschy roadside-americana-esque TRex. The place looks like something you might find off a very long-forgotten portion of Route 66.
So I go inside to get my ticket ($14.95 reg price for adult, but $2 less with their online coupon) and the disinterested kid behind the counter immediately tells me I can't do the tour if I'm the only one. I was really surprised to hear this, so I asked why and he says that it's company policy and a liability issue that there must be at least two people on a tour to go down into the cave, but I can wait until 3pm (which is now T-5mins) to see if anyone else shows up. So I run to the restroom and come back and see a family of three perusing the gift shop, so I think "great, people for the tour". Turns out they had already gone on the 2pm tour. So after sitting there for 10mins (it's now 15mins after 3pm) the kid looks up and almost as if he forgot why I was there, he says "Sorry, but we aren't doing a tour, besides it would be too late to go down now anyway if someone were to show up". Seriously? I have toured caverns all over Texas and the US (I am not joking, I have close to 40 cavern tours in the US alone under my belt and probably close to 60 worldwide) and have never been turned away from a tour because I was the only one. If much nicer establishments, such as Cave of the Winds, in Colorado will take me one on one, then I have to think there is something more "Beware-able" about it being an issue here.
My thoughts on the whole disappointing situation are these:
-Must not be worth seeing if they can't drum up business
-Must not want business if they are turning away customers
In any case, I will not be returning as again, I doubt I'm missing anything but a cheap over-priced tourist trap experience here.
I highly recommend touring the nearby Natural Bridge Caverns and Cave Without a Name, both of which are absolutely, amazingly beautiful and the formations will take your breath away!
*In response to the comment left by Cascade Caverns about tour not going if there is only one person being prevalent on their website and brochure, I have gone back to the website (see pics of their website below or go to it yourself) to see if I somehow overlooked something to that effect and cannot find any verbiage regarding restricted tour size or safety liability of said tour size. As for the brochure, I cannot speak to that as I only consulted their website and Yelp and did not see a brochure, but I would imagine if it isn't easily found on their website, I doubt it would be printed on their brochure.
**I have since corrected this review to say "Natural Bridge Caverns" and not "Cascade" as a cavern I would recommend read more
