On a recent trip to Fred, we decided to branch out and visit Bending Branch Winery in Comfort, TX., as it's only about a 45-minute ride from downtown Fred. Bending Branch produces some top-notch wines and Bourbon! The winery is beautiful with multiple rooms, from high tops to comfy chairs. There is also a large patio that has some shade. They have a great family story (check out their website) and a unique way to produce bold wines. Being Kentucky natives, their bourbons are full-bodied and range from great for an old-fashioned to smooth as silk, straight up delicious. We enjoyed our red flight tasting, and yes, their Tannat is superb. Both their 2022 and 2021 Estate were complex, not overly fruity and rich. Their Tempranillo is beautifully balanced with some cherry notes and a fine leathery finish. I did sample their high-rye bourbon and was impressed with its smoothness. So impressed that a bottle now sits in my bourbon cabinet at home. This bourbon is easily sipped straight up or with a single ice cube. Bonus: If you do visit Bending Branch, take a short drive to downtown Comfort. There are some cool stores, and you have to check out the historic Giles Hotel. You can access their beautiful courtyard, and we were told by multiple folks that their breakfast is awesome. We are planning a return trip to check out the other wineries in the area and stay here. read more

My wife and were with some friends winery hopping this past weekend and they suggested Bending Branch as it is a distillery as well. Me being more of a whiskey drinker and less a wine sipper, jumped at the opportunity. So off we go. Due to the Texas heat, we stayed indoors, but the outside area was nice. While the others opted for wine fights, I went for the a whiskey flight. I had a nice 4 glass pour and the spirits were good. Even bought a bottle. ChickenDuck Eclipse Ed. was its name. Great taste but even better story. This particular selection was bottled for the April 2024 eclipse and our son and daughter in law got engaged on that day in nearby Mountain Home, Tx just as the eclipse was starting. I finished off with an old fashioned - so good. The wife and friends liked their wine tasting, but nothing like having a drink and a story to go with it. read more

We were in Comfort, so why not wine. No one there but us, so we made new friends with the crew. Beautiful property just outside of Comfort. On a hill, so will be nice to sit outside soon. We started with a bourbon tasting. I am very glad that I did not care for the $500 bottle taste. But I got to taste. We did take home a very nice bottle that they created for the eclipse. The wines were fantastic. Tasted a temp, a blend, and a tannat. Then their port. Don't tell the wife but I am now in yet another wine club. Took home a bottle of the blend - Twister. Love blends. Also got a bottle of tannat aged in bourbon barrels. Can't wait to taste that. Also had to have the port. Always nice to find great wine. Oh a great name for some of their bourbons - ChickenDuck. Stopped by for a tasting this afternoon. Greeted by a nice gentlemen who took our name and offered us complimentary glasses of rose (thanks!). Told to find any table inside and that a staff member would help us. Thirty minutes later and that never happened (!), even though staff walked by us multiple times and it was not busy at all. We decided to leave and headed to a spot in downtown Comfort instead. Would have been great to have tried more of Bending Branch's wines and enjoyed the views, but didn't feel the need to have to flag people down just to spend our money. read more

Superb winery a bit off the beaten path outside the town of Comfort. Nice country drive out to the winery, which has both outside and interior seating. Quaint interior with friendly and helpful staff. Of particular interest are the tastings offered. The wine flight is $30 for five as of August 2023 but I believe you get a souvenir glass as part of the price. However, we went specifically for their bourbon tasting, which is four unique locally made bourbon shots for $18. This is a rare offering in wine country, the most similar I've found are distilleries who serve rum or vodka. Smoky and with hints of caramel, if you're a bourbon fan (or just want to break away from wine) this is definitely worth a visit! 5 out of 5 stars! read more

Some friends and I checked out Bending Branch using our wine tasting passport and we loved their Tannat EM so much that we got a bottle of it to share after our tasting flights. I would recommend checking out other vineyards while in the area if you don't live close or adding it as a stop on your way to somewhere in the area. I will have to say that we were apparently here on a night that was crazier and busier than usual. Not much room in the bar and no place to sit. My wife had the wine and I had the whiskey tastings. Neither one of us was extremely impressed with any of the wines or whiskeys that were served. It was also just a little bit pricey for the teeny tiny pores that they gave us. Might be worth a try tonight, where it is not so busy. Other than that, we had a decent time. Took a little while to get here off the main road and comfort. read more

Came here as our winery had promotion with Bending Branch and we got same discount as if we purchased from our winery. Small inside tasting area and about 5 tables outside. Staff very nice, professional, but it was busy so kind of hard to get full info on what we were tasting from staff. The tasting menu did have fairly good description of the wines. Their champagne was great. Red was okay for my tasting. It was right after the flood, so they had a trio of reds for sale with all proceeds going to victims of the flood. The Tempranillo in the trio was appreciated by our friends. Would recommend. read more

Weekend trip to Comfort with a group of friends. Decided to go to Bending Branch for a couple of tastings. We were greeted by a man who passively aggressively let us know that they accept reservations (we had a group of 12). We said we were good sitting outside, and then we're told to go ahead and arrange our tables ourselves. Service was slooooooow. 20 minutes to get first bourbon flight, another 15 for the other 2 bourbon flights. We eventually got to our wine tasting, which consisted of the server bringing a bottle to pour into glasses we didnt have (apparently we were supposed to be given a complimentary glass when we arrived?). We eventually got our first tasting, and then waited for 10 to 15 minutes between each taste for the next 4. When Mr. Passive Aggressive checked us out at the register, he made sure to let us know that we could have made reservations and to do so next time. They weren't that busy and there was an abundance of empty tables. I apologize for being a patron of this establishment and such an inconvenience. Their on-site aged KY Bourbon is also very good but wait until you have one of their mixed drinks that blends their red wine with the bourbon...Best Whisky Sour in Boerne/Comfort area. Stumbled upon this winery because our daughter was doing some volunteer work at a camp close by. What a nice little winery, with great wines some of we never heard of. The folks were super friendly and the wine was so good, we joined the wine club. The tasting room has an adjacent patio and live music on the weekends. Kids are welcome, which is a plus. They do have a members only area up the hill, with complimentary snacks. Dr. Bob is such a sweet man, and explained to us how he got started with the Tenant grapes and growing grapes in general. Bottom line up front: BEST wines in and around Boerne. PERIOD. Details: Esposa and I have been here several times recently. It's well off the beaten path, but worth the twisty country drive past beautiful Texas Hill Country creeks, ranch, and farmland. Ample parking. Clean modern tasting room. Crowds vary drastically from SRO to semi-busy. The staff are friendly and helpful, some more than others. Okay, enough of the extras. You want to know 'bout the vino, que no? Okay, so the regular wines are good to very good. Skip them. Pay a little extra and sample the reserve wines. Those are very good to excellent. The club-member-only wines are the best. We have now joined their club and are happy to visit to pick up our obligatory club wines (somebody has to do it, right?). read more

Drove in from Houston and decided to stop at this winery before heading to the hotel. We reserved a spot online prior to arriving which was easy enough to do. We really enjoyed the tasting, servers were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The view was amazing so we chose to enjoy our tasting outside. Some small gnats were flying around but no fault to the winery, just comes with the location. Online they say there is live music on the weekend/winery tours however when I asked what else there was to explore, the staff explained they had music further up the hill as an exclusive for their wine club members. If you are up for the drive which can be really cool if you take the scenic route you will be rewarded with good wine, a pleasant relaxing Hill Country setting and very hospitable hosts. The tasting pours were generous. The $10/5 pours is a decent deal but even better if you buy two bottles they were comped for both of us. We actually purchased 3, one to enjoy there and two to bring home. They make wine with grapes from all over including California. The Thinkers Blend was a favorite comprising 7 varietals that worked very well. Also we found out the quick way back to Austin was 87 to Fredericksburg then 290 east. While the wine is very delightful, the service and acknowledgement of our presence was less than impressive. I/we were walked away from during our tasting several times for deliveries, drive up orders and customers that arrived after us. The ladies were more interested in tequila drink recipes than us trying to enjoy the atmosphere and learning about the wines offered. Other customers got three pours on their tasting and actually was told they didn't have to pay for their tasting. Possibly because they immediately mentioned they were there to purchase 3 bottles of wine? Not sure what the deal was? I/we felt sooo unwelcome. We went off the beaten track on our trip to visit and was so let down. While all of your reviews are fabulous, I wonder if they are all verified? Sorry, have to be honest. read more

Aside from the amazing scenery and relaxing atmosphere, the service was absolutely top notch! We went as a group to celebrate my daughter in law's birthday and we expected some tasty wine, but the phenomenal service was a very pleasant surprise! The staff was both friendly and attentive. To boot, I ended up leaving my iPhone on the patio banister. After searching, asking, and shutting down service over the course of a couple of days, I decided to call and see if perhaps it was there. Stopped in here on a day of visiting wineries, and was thrilled by the experience. Staff was exceptional and made you feel welcomed from the moment you stepped through the door. A nice selection of wines, including a few not on the tasting sheet. The High Plains Rosé was quite good, lots of flavor. Our visit today, 11-3-2021, was a disappointment. A friend and I chose this winery from the beginning of our vacation plans finding the beauty of the area spectacular. Initially, it was a pleasant greeting; however, after our very first tasting another couple arrived and ALL attention was diverted from us to them. We were treated 2nd rate, and it was obvious they felt the other customer deserved their undivided attention. This is our favorite spot in the hill country. The wine tasting fee is $15 and you get to try five-seven wines ( two of the wines were out the last time we went), however the wine fee for me and my partner was waived when we bought two bottles of wine. They have all sorts of wine for every style and (and price range) of wine drinker. Bending Branch has the most gorgeous outside sitting area to enjoy your glass or bottle of wine. We bought a bottle to sit and drink with the picnic we brought and then two bottles to take home with us. If you want to enjoy good wine, a good view and affordable wine this is this is the place to visit! read more

Just a tip, if you don't like crowds, don't come on Saturdays, they remove the bar stools on the weekends for the purpose to move the crowd. We were the only one there around 1PM on Sunday, so we had a great chit chat with the staff. But when we were leaving, the place is pretty full. Considering the rapid growth of the Texas wine industry, it is possible that there is another winery out there that is making better wine than Bending Branch...but I doubt it. Anything that might interest you about this winery from the tasting room to their web site to the labels and obviously the wine, is superior. If you are reading this review to assist with putting together an itinerary of Texas wineries to visit, make sure to put this one at the top of your list. ..about the wine: 2009 Tannat RF, 1840 - This deep red wine has an incredible aroma in the glass that can be called "flowery". There are tastes of red fruits and candy up front, but as the wine oxidizes in the glass, you will likely get something more spicy and chocolatey. 2009 Petite Sirah, 1840 - Another deep, dark red that I label as powerful. You should get the earthy and spicy flavors that are expected along with a subtle chocolate tone. 2010 Comfortage - The name is clever, the wine is awesome. This one is buttery and somewhat woodsy, but not too heavy. If anyone asks what a Texas white wine should be, this is the one. 2009 Picpoul Blanc, 1840 - This is a light and easy white that will pair well with most foods. There are hints of citrus and oak (or cream), but neither will overwhelm your palate. ..about the tasting room: The tasting room is located just south of I-10 outside Comfort. The building and grounds are nicely maintained and the room itself is well done. During my visit, the staff was very helpful and obviously excited about Bending Branch. They know the wine and are more than happy to answer questions. While there, I joined one of their 2 wine clubs. By Texas winery standards, the options available are very unique and should meet the needs of just about everyone. You will not find any of these wines in your local wine shop and their availability overall is somewhat limited so, you should consider joining one of the clubs.....or at least buy a couple of bottles from their website. Texas really needs more wineries like Bending Branch and I hope what is going on here is a sign of things to come. read more

Sitting atop 56 acres in picturesque Comfort TX, which was named by Southern Living one of the best small towns of the south is Bending Branch Winery. Founded in 2009 by Dr Robert Young MD who I believe still lives on the property. They are known for their Signature Tannat, and have a full line of excellent wines! The Tasting room is beautifully appointed and the service is friendly and informative. We have visited many of the wineries in the Hill County and this is one of our favorites! We joined the wine club for the quality of the wines they are producing and also the value, the wines are not over priced. Definitely worth a stop on your trip to the Hill County! read more
