Been a few time and generally enjoyed their extensive menu and creative mocktails/drink selections. It's not common to see Mexican Vegan cuisine, and this place definitely does vegan well. The atmosphere is fairly cozy and casual, it has more of a neighborhood vibe, with all outdoor patio seating. Parking can be limited however and you may have to park on the street. Service was noticeably slow this most recent time around, it wasn't many people dining on a Sunday evening, we saw 1-2 waiters but had to wait quite awhile to place an order. The food was delicious, they start you off with some vegan chicharrons and salsa. I opted for the 8 taco taste of Cascabel sampler which featured all their "meats" which I thought was a solid value order if you have someone to share with. You get 8 tacos with 2 different types of beans, 2 different rice + guac and vegan queso.. which is a good amount of food. I liked/disliked some of the vegan meats and give them credit for their creativity, but would say overall I'm not a big fan of imitation meat personally. It's really a "to each their own" situation. I was also not a fan of vegan queso, but the guac was absolutely delicious. Overall I would say it's not a bad place to checkout if you're a vegan or looking for something different. The prices are a bit high compared to its value and portion sizes for some of the plates, but the experience, presentation, and creativity carries the weight on the scoring here. 3.5/5
Came to Cascabel because I was really excited by the idea of Mexican Vegan food! It wasn't something I had tried before, nor something I've seen elsewhere in Houston (but if you happen to know of other spots, I would love to know!). The restaurant is in what was probably originally someone's house, so it has a very cozy, welcoming feel. In terms of house-like restaurants, this one leans more casual and hole-in-the-wall, rather than dimly-lit and intimate, if you know what I mean. When we came in on a Sunday afternoon, there was also live music playing, which really added to the ambiance. I ordered the Taco Mixer, which came with three tacos (your choice of "meat"), rice, and refried beans. I chose Picadillo (soy), Pollo en Salsa Verde (jackfruit), and Barbacoa (jackfruit) for my tacos. I really loved the Pollo en Salsa Verde and Barbacoa. Though they didn't exactly taste like their namesake, they were still really delicious. I did not really like the Picadillo. Overall, though, I thought the dish was great. It was also huge and very well worth the price. My biggest complaint about this restaurant is that the service is very slow. The food came out pretty quickly after we ordered, but it took a long time for someone to come take our order and for someone to bring the check. We were waiting for quite a while. However, I do not think this entirely diminishes the experience--I would definitely like to come back and try more of their expansive menu!
Great spot for Mexican vegan food! I was in Houston this past weekend visiting with some college girlfriends and we went here since we had a mix of vegetarians and dairy free people in our group of 5 people. The weather was amazing so we could sit outside in their patio. We all enjoyed our food. We were told the mole was spicy but it was actually sweet and we were expecting spicy when we ordered it. It wasn't very crowded when we were there. The server was really nice and took several photos of us. Making Mexican food all vegan is quite an accomplishment!
Upon arrival, the parking situation was abysmal; a few lots were in front of the restaurant, but space was limited, and it was extremely close to the road, which could be a safety hazard. Street parking across the restaurant was also an option, but it was inconvenient. While the exterior/patio of Cascabel had a very homey and cozy vibe, I wasn't a fan of the interior and think the seating could use some TLC. The workers were patient when taking our orders and extremely friendly, albeit the service was slow, and we had to flag down the servers a few times. I felt extremely indecisive when looking at the menu. There were several tasty options, and it was nice of them to be transparent about what ingredients were used to make the vegan meats! Ultimately, I ordered the Birria Tacos (which uses Barbacoa) and the Spanish Rice. - Birria Tacos (3.75/5): My first thought when I took a bite was that the tacos tasted like pizza. When I opened the taco, there was more cheese than the vegan Barbacoa (jackfruit). As a result, the pizza taste overpowered the birria soup, which I felt did nothing when I dipped the tacos into it; non-vegan Birria tacos tastes drastically different, so this was an experience, to say the least. Despite my qualms, the tacos were prepared well, and I enjoyed the overall texture! - Spanish Rice (2.5/5): To be candid, I was disappointed when I took a bite. I'm not too familiar with Spanish Rice, but I thought the texture was hard and severely lacking in flavor. The addition of lime and onion, cilantro, etc., did help! - They also served a chicharrones appetizer with three types of salsa, which was fun to eat, and my group enjoyed it as well. Since I love Mexican food, I'd be open to giving Cascabel another try if I'm in the area! But my first time here was a bit lukewarm, and I'd look into their other options next time.
This was my first time trying Vegan Mexican food and it was pretty good! Their chips with queso was honestly one of my favorite dishes despite the simplicity. The vegan cheese was pretty convincing and it had the slightest kick to it which really elevated the dish. I tried their street tacos as well. The pastor was pretty good but I think the barbacoa was just alright. I could tell it was jackfruit immediately. The tamales were a bit on the dry side so I had to use a lot of salsa. The mole enchiladas are good especially if you like potatoes. The quesadilla is a safe option as usual; I got pastor with mine and it was solid. My favorite dish though was the Birria tacos. Super crispy and flavorful. I honestly could not tell it was meatless. The consomé was delicious and honestly paired well with every dish, not just the Birria tacos. Since everything was vegan, I left feeling full in a good way since nothing was too greasy or heavy!
This place is a gem. Outstanding service from Catherine. The food tasty. A great variety of protein choices. To a decent kids menu. I actually ordered off of, because needed a light bite. I also ordered queso which was excellent, and to surprise of my friends vegan The carnivores as well .loved. Wisp which was excellent fresh pick. Good ambience a first choice in any part of town Revisited this evening 09 May.24excellent service . Smashing food my partner and I shared "a taste of Cadcabels. Great variety of tastes more than enough for both of us. I didn't sample mocktails, because I prefer cocktails but there's a nice offering.. there is street parking. If I go anywhere more than once in this metroplex of approx 7 million it's good we have many choices. I spoiled us with flan to go really yummy
Cute place with decent vegan Mexican food! Came here with a group of friends, and they started us off with some complimentary chips and various salsas to dip. The menu had a large variety of Mexican foods and many different options for protein. I ended up getting the single quesadilla with al pastor and my friends got the tostada plate, birria tacos, and crunchywrap, which I was able to try each one. - Single Quesadilla with al pastor (3.5/5): the quesadilla was packed with the el pastor and was a pretty generous proportion. I thought the flavor was good, but I felt like the quesadilla needed more cheese and was on the saltier side. The side salad that came with it definitely helped balance out the fattiness of the quesadilla, especially, the sour cream dressing which added more dimension to the overall dish. Overall, I found this dish tasty, but it did not really stand out against other quesadillas. - Crunchywrap (4/5): My favorite dish out of the ones we tried. The crunchywrap was thick and juicy and was like an elevated Taco Bell crunch wrap supreme. - Tostada plate (3.8/5): The tostadas were packed with the meat. The flavor was good and I enjoyed the texture. - Birria tacos (3/5): I felt like these were too tomato heavy and not very birria flavored. My friend commented how it tasted like pizza. It was juicy though. Service/ambiance: The vibes here were good, especially in the outdoor seating area. Service was also super nice and they let us sit and talk for hours.
Best vegan Mexican food in the Houston area. Even if you're not vegan, the food is so spectacularly flavorful and hearty, you won't miss out. Their meats including the tinga and barbecue are delicious. We have never had anything we didn't like. Always worth the 40 minute drive for me and my carnivore husband.
I realllllly wanted to love this place BUT it's too inconsistent! Not to mention I've mentioned to Them the moldy vent on the inside that several other customers have referenced in Their reviews but was looked at like I had mold on My face. I try not to take everything personal so if the food is good then I may be able to get past the usual lack of! The service has been 50/50. There's a very nice patio area if You choose to sit outdoors. The first maybe two times I visited it was honestly pleasant but the third, fourth and so on were horrible experiences. I ordered the same thing every time. The birria tacos. They were amazing initially. Then all of a sudden someone decided to put a pound of mozerrella in the tortilla!!!! Why? The flavor or lack thereof from the original experience. Sigh -The cilantro rice is good, but I don't care for the Spanish rice. -The taco platter isn't worth getting especially with so many different concoctions. The jackfruit if like birria style was the most decent if not the chorizo 3/5. I'll pass on the rest! Now, I must admit that They ran a "limited edition" if You will of birria ramen & O M G that was Their BEST thing going it easily 10/10!!!!! The spice, the broth, the FLAVOR!!!!!! I begged Them to keep it even though They forced You to spend $25 as a special it forced You to also get a side option but it was so amazing, I was willing to spend the extra $10 from the side. I digresss :( Even the alcohol has gotten weak!!!! I gave it at least two more tries after the initial visit. This place is not cheap so if You are going to attach high price tags on Your menu at least make sure You are staying consistent. NO MAS!!!!! I usually go to Mo Better Brews or Houston Atlanta Vegan for My vegan fix, but They are not located as close to Me as Cascabel. Plus, I truly enjoy some good Mexican food! Won't be returning :(

The service and food were absolutely superb! As someone who has been a vegan for many years, I can honestly say this place is a must try. Once I go back to Houston, I will be going back to try more dishes especially when they have a live band. read more

Food is delicious, but very oily. Get ready to have your cholesterol increased and exceptional flatulence. The food comes out quickly, which makes me wonder if it's all just microwaved. The waitress doesn't know how to space out appetizers from the main entrée. The men's restroom does not have a door knob from the inside. The place looks like it was painted by a third grade class. The music is overwhelmingly loud. As a vegan, I want to support vegan restaurants, but Cascabel, you need to step up the cleanliness and it's time to buy new cutlery. The forks are stale and your spoons have rough edges. read more
Amazing concept, delicious food. We are doing vegan December and came on a Friday night and it was empty, so I was initially worried. But everything exceeded my expectations. We started with the El Diablo Tostada which was excellent. I had the tamales and my husband had the Burris tacos. We were very happy with both. Service was good and they had a great DJ that night who was spinning vinyls. I did see several people come in for takeout, but I think the issue is their location. While I think it's great that the place is in the community, but I feel like as a concept they'd do much better in the Heights or Montrose. Maybe it's just slow season but I do hope they do well because they've got something unique and good. read more

I ordered takeout/delivery and it was good! I liked all the different ways you can play with vegetables to make them flavorful and make them look and taste almost like meat. The people here are wizards! It's magic. And the grease that drips everywhere like at those taco stands? Yeah they got the grease too. Vegan grease baybayyyy. The queso is potato based and different, but still good in its own way. All the tacos really look like they're made with meat and flavorful but it's all vegan! My favorites were the fajita and potato tacos. I let my dad try the jackfruit barbacoa taco and he said "That's good!" I told him it wasn't meat and he was like "Naw you lying!" Lol. For the amount of food I got for the amount of money I paid, it was totally worth it. I don't even feel bad after eating like 9 tacos and 5 sides. Not one bit. read more

Yes, I did not have a meal there so I cannot speak to their actual food. But the dessert I got was terrible. It was supposed to be their version of French toast. I don't know if they over cooked it or used too much grease, but I have been coughing and clearing my throat for the past 25 minutes after eating only a half of one. Whatever they cooked it in is really strong, and it leaves aftertaste in your mouth! I was really hoping that I could find a decent vegan dessert on this side of town. I guess I'll have to keep looking. read more

AMAZING! For my first full vegan experience this was a 10/10! Everything on the menu looked and sounded so delicious. We got nachos as an appetizer and I didn't even realize I was eating mushrooms (I don't like them for their taste and texture) and I was so shocked how good it was! I tried their flautas and were crunchy yet soft and the rice and beans did not disappoint. Their agua de tamarindo was very refreshing. Can't wait to go back and try more of their menu. read more

Very nice hidden gem. Great vegan food that always delights. I've been here multiple times and the quality is consistent. The outdoor seating area with lights makes for a fun intimate atmosphere. Great food, great service. Even if you're not vegan, you're gonna love it here! read more

This place offers very authentic Mexican food. Everything we ordered was delicious, I did not love the enchiladas de mole. I thought the mole tasted too sweet in my option and possibly from a jar. However the tacos were excellent, very flavorful and fresh. We will come back but will order other things next time. Also- there's only 2 servers working on a Sunday ? Seems short staffed, as we were waiting for certain things because our server had the entire place to serve herself. read more

4 for being vegan food and awesome service and staff. But really I'm probably at 3.5. I do love that they had happy hour all day! And the drinks were actually really good. We couldn't decide on what to get, a lot of the pictures look so good in the menu but I'm having a problem looking beyond tacos right now. We tried the cascabel sampler- queso was interesting. The Mayo and chimichuri for the emapanadas were great and so was the pastry for the empanada. Guac was definitely lacking in salt and lime. For the taco mixer I tried the al pastor (my favourite), the Tinga (good amount of heat) and the Mexican brisket- (first time trying hibiscus flower, and it was actually pretty decent!). But really I also just enjoyed the rice and beans- cilantro rice!! The patio space is perfect for these times, they do have a couple of heaters available as well. read more

My cousin and I decided to go check Cascabel out for Happy Hour since she is pescatarian. It is tucked away in the Spring Branch area with a cute little outdoor patio making you feel like you are in someone's house/backyard. Parking was easy, but there are outdoor cats hanging around so be careful and look around as you park/leave. We opted to eat inside since...summer in Houston. Inside seating was not as pleasant as I thought it would be. There were a couple flies which were a bother, not the cleanest, and it was a little too quiet/empty at the time, so made the vibes a bit awkward, especially when you may be in conversation at your table. You are able to order through your phone and pay through square which makes contactless ordering convenient. They advertise "Happy Hour" but we were confused as to what exactly was on the happy hour menu, and the server didn't seem to have any definite answers when we asked. We decided to just order some plates to share and couple of drinks. Everything was pretty pricey for what you get. The Horchatas were great though- you can even request to add Rum for a tasty Rumchata. The Strawberry Rumchata was lovely, and we liked that they came out in frosted glasses keeping it chill. I liked the empanadas, you could barely notice it wasn't meat, but it was a little greasy. My cousin ordered the tostadas, which I tried and didn't really favor. The chips were the free appetizer, and are equivalent to chicharrones, pretty good with the cilantro crema sauce. Truthfully, I'm not sure I would crave to be back, but if I ever do, maybe during the Fall time to try again with the dining experience on the patio. read more

I am no where close to being a vegan whatsoever, and after eating here, I don't know why Im not! Great experience - beautiful outside patio with a DJ on a Saturday evening. Very nice wait staff. Food is great. A little pricey with all the automatic (guacamole etc) adds and up charges. Bumps plates from $14 to $20 plates average. Drinks are great but $$$. Recommend going! Very original. read more
I came here with some friends and I'm so happy we got to try so many different items! I honestly can't stop thinking about the queso!!! It was so good, so thick, so filling, so addicting! And I can't believe it's made from potatoes! I even had the thought that they should even make a broccoli cheese potato soup concoction! Seriously. The texture really reminds you of a really good potato soup. Their homemade chips have a nice crunch and you can tell by the thickness and texture that it's homemade. This ain't no think chip that can't handle a thick ass scoop of queso. No sir. This is a really thick chip that can handle all of that thiccccc cheese. Here's what we ordered 1. Quesadilla with chicken SO FREAKING GOOOD. OMFG. The pollo en salsa was the PERFECT choice for this quesadilla. Huge chunks, hot and fresh, quesadilla the size of a man's hand, melted mozzarella. Every bite was incredible. MUST GET WITH THE CHICKEN. 2. Tortilla Soup My vegan friend whom I invited was looking forward to getting the tortilla soup. If it was something he missed after becoming vegan, it was being able to enjoy tortilla soup again. This literally met his standards. Every slurp, every bite, every spoonful, his eyes kept lighting up. I even took a spoonful taste and it was so full of flavor and a kick to it. 10/10 3. Chile Con Queso I already state this, but THIS WAS MY FAVORITE. ugh can't stop thinking about it 4. Beto's Nachos Vegan nachos done right. That's all I can say. The chorizo, the "sour cream", queso, refried beans, mozarella....ugh so good. 5. Taco Platter - al pastor, tinga, chorizo, barbacoa, fajita Out of this taco platter, the al pastor was definitely my favorite. Thought everything was good, definitely the al pastor hands down. 6. Churro Donut I was kinda disappointed. It was a bit dry. Needed some milk to down it. 7. Chocolate Empanada We did a cross section of this and let me tell you, the chocolate was oozing. Every bite was like a chocolate pudding heaven. YUM. Service was so good here, food was amazing, atmosphere super homey... y'allllllllllllll I seriously can't stop thinking about that queso!!!! I have been to Cascabel before and enjoyed the food. Today, I didn't. The waiter was very nice and the setting is great, so I give it a 4. As for the Cascabel Sampler, don't get it if you are alone. It is really something to share. The empanadas were fried and kinda squishy. I would have preferred them baked. The guacamole was mediocre. The vegan queso was okay, but not a good option for one person. I liked the pinkish sauce, but none of the other condiments. I also got a strawberry horchata. It was okay. i was in houston looking for vegetarian/vegan options and came across cascabel online. the menu looked good so decided to try it. i ordered the appetizer sampler and a bbq taco the sampler came with chips, empanadas, queso, guacamole. the portions were big, especially the queso and guacamole. the queso was good and the guacamole was average (could've used a bit more flavor in my opinion). the empanadas were also good - i liked how they were baked and not fried. the chips were average as they got soggy and soft really quickly the bbq taco wasn't that great and if i were to order again i probably wouldn't order that overall great veggie/vegan tex-next option read more

By far the best vegan Mexican food I have had in Houston! Pleasant service and scrumptious well seasoned food. Reasonably priced as well. I can't wait to see how the menu evolves after they get fully operating. The restroom was clean. Inside the restaurant, there isn't a great flow and you can clearly see what work still needs to be done. But it appeared clean. Chile con queso & chips: unique yet delicious cheese dip. I actually didn't eat it correctly. I put the toppings on my tostadas because I didn't know they were for the queso. A Spicy jackfruit tostadas: delicioso! The tostada is crispy and sturdy enough to hold up to the toppings until the very last bite. The jackfruit has a great spicy kick. A Horchata: full size portion, perfect touch of sweetness and cinnamon. A+ read more

I must first start this was my second visit in a few months span and am from austin Texas! This may have to be my go to in town for vegan Mexican food when in town! This visit I brought a gang of friends to have Sunday brunch on the patio with! We all had a wonderful visit out on the patio ! we ordered the most and tried so much of the menu together ... The Chorizo is amazing! We were blessed by the wonderful service of Austin who had some very good suggestions and was the most polite , humble and attentive server I have had in a very long time! I loved how every visit thus far the manager checked in with our table and love that this business really cares to provide excellent service on top of even more beyond amazing food , flavor and very cool vibe!! I can't wait to try more things next time .. The chorizo is amazing , in tacos with potatoes and 'eggs'- amazing . Menudo is great! The broth was rich and had never had a bowl this accurate! We were welcomed with some chicharrones and salsa botanera. Which was really unpleasant because we were very hungry and having junk food on our table kind of grossed me out. As I returned the chicharrones I confidently ordered chips and guacamole because I had seen the picture I attached to this review on Yelp. So I was actually excited about it due to the photo showing fresh home made chips made from regular table top tortillas. But when the guacamole arrived they were just your regular Mexican cafe chips... very disappointed. I also ordered the queso, the mild, not spicy. It was great. We loved it. I loved the guacamole too. But again, disappointed that the chips were not like in the photo. I don't know if that photo was just for pose or they're not consistent on what they serve. Our food was great. The children's plates were not. They were unthoughtful and terribly overpriced. I mean, yes they were ok and the kids ate them, but the kids also like good food. We go to many places were they also put heart into the kids meals. These were just two cheap store tortillas with a lick of beans and I guess a little vegan cheese, and fried. I don't know if it was an option, but come on, it's a vegan restaurant. Fruit should be an option as a side. I ordered the birria tacos with jackfruit birria. The jackfruit was well cooked and very tasty. The tacos we crispy and the melted vegan cheese in them was fantastic. The consome was also very tasty. The rice as also very good. My wife had the poblano quesadilla because the nice waitress recommended it. Mmmm I personally thought to myself "don't order that, we order quesadillas at every other Mexican restaurant. This is vegan! You can order anything!! LOL" But I just respected her boldness... I'd never thought she would order poblano anything. She went for it and I was proud of her. Her quesadilla was very very good. But she said she didn't love it. I knew she wouldn't simply because she's not one to eat poblano peppers. But she actually ate it and enjoyed it. I think if she would have ordered something else she would have loved it. Don't let the looks fool you. The place is pricy. Don't go on ordering things of you're on a budget. For five of us we dropped $100.00 and we didn't order a lot. Two child plates, and three adult entrees, two aguas frescas and two appetizers. I think they have to tune a few more things to really truly earn that Benji. It was good, but it wasn't great. What a cute little spot. It's that neighborhood restaurant feel with a very friendly staff who will work to accommodate whatever you ask for. I had a Torta and I was happy that each half of the sandwich could be different so I did the barbacoa on one side and Mexican brisket on the other. The Torta was quite large with fluffy bread, quite filling. However, I felt that it only tasted "okay." The deserts were pretty good, we tried both a donut and some flaky thing with cream. The flakey thing was awesome, and the donut good. Four stars between the place, service and desert, but the Torta itself would have been a 3 if I was just rating the food. read more

Been wanting to try this place for a couple weeks and made it out tonight! Loved the ambience, live music with plenty of cozy heated outdoor seating. Friendly staff, and tons of options. The manager came out and recommended some options for us too, though literally everything on the menu is vegan! Tacos were on sale for $2 a piece so we enjoyed the Al pastor, chorizo , and bistek. I'm not usually a huge fan of vegan queso but the queso with the cascabel sampler was not bad! Great spicy salsas as well!! We will totally be back!! read more

YUMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!! I am from LA California, the city that represents vegan cuisine. This place by far beats half of the vegan restaurants out there... Cascabel is a cute little spot, they have plenty of outdoor seating along with indoor. The service was excellent, I got the burrito with tinga... and it was soooooo good, so much flavor. They have 3 different salsa. My favorite was the red sauce. My friend got the breakfast burrito and he dominated it. He finished the whole burrito while I was still munching on the first slice, lol. AND he ordered another one to go. Definitely try this place!! Too bad I live somewhere else... I'd seriously would come once a week if I lived near by.. when I visit Huston again, FOR SURE I'll come back! read more

This is a good find for all the vegan folks out there. This place is hidden off in a residential neighborhood so might not be an obvious place but trust me they make real good vegan Mexican food. It's amazing to be able to eat anything from that menu for someone who is vegan! read more

The service at this place was decent. They were kind and helpful. But a bit distracted. But nothing that can't be fixed. The food was pretty good. It was missing a bit of flavor but once you use the hot sauces they provided, it makes the dish good. I would recommend this place to anyone. So many vegan options! read more

If you want a tasty twist on Vegan & Tacos then Cascabel is your next destination for sure. What makes it the place? The food of course is the reason! From the Chicharonnes served with hot sauce on the side (think chips & salsa), to unique dishes which did not disappoint (we at least not on my first visit - LoL!!) In the worlds of the Terminator, "I'll be back." I had the ceviche tacos which I gotta admit were very spot on. The soy had a flavor and texture of lime marinated fish. Plus what really impressed me were the in-house made vinegar pickles, this, crisp and savory. They did have a sampler appetizer for $20 which let you explore all the vegan "meat" textures & flavors, which I will definitely get when not alone but with a party to share; to find my favorite. What else makes it pop? The atmosphere is genuine. Nestled among at least 5 giants trees and fans your never really in the sun. And the Spanish music changes daily but I loved the throw back tunes of Yuri, Azuca Moreno, Juan Luis Guerra, Los Bukis, old school Luis Miguel and Christian and so on. If you know the music culture you know the tunes are unique and vibrant. If you want i door AC they got it too. And a private side patio if your lookibg for a more intimate / private feel. Also, the desserts are vegan as well; from the mini-panaderia to flan, and arroz con leche (rice pudding). Yes, all vegan so all dairy free. Things for heads up: parking is ok anywhere you see: church across the street, in front of Law Office, street and restaurant. Lastly, they do breakfast (so they told me) so if your want to get ur breakfast taco on let me know what you think. Can't fail with pan y cafe. As far as people, and crowd no need to speak Spanish and from pics supporters of our Houston LBGT community. They have taco Tuesday's, live DJ on Friday & Saturday nights and Karaoke nights as well.
