I would rate this place a 3.5/5! There aren't many spots for designated parking but plenty of space for street parking. I came in on a Sunday around noon and there were a good number of customers but thankfully my friend and I were able to be seated right away. The outdoor seating area is super cute but I think it would've been much better if there was a gazebo or some kind of umbrella since there was no shade. Although fall is here and the weather is finally starting to get a little cooler, I don't know if eating here during the summer time is feasible. The appetizer consisted of chicharrones de harina with 3 different sauces. The creamy green sauce and red sauce are super spicy so you've been warned (for spice reference, I enjoy eating buldak noodles but need some eggs to dilute the spiciness). The only sauce that wasn't as spicy was the salsa verde. I also got the guacamole and the ingredients were fresh but it lacked a little salt. Thankfully, the cutlery package had some salt and pepper so that helped. As for the entree, I ordered the Birria Tacos. The flavor and seasoning were fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed the use of jackfruit in the dish. Consome was also savory and delicious! My friend ordered an omlete and that came with pancakes. Although I didn't try the omlete, the pancakes were amazing. They're soft, fluffy, moist, and the cream on top and on the side were sweet and satisfying. I was blown away by the fact that they're vegan too- bravo! As for drinks, I ended up getting the La Cascarita which is a spicy pineapple drink. Flavor-wise, the drink was spicy and refreshing but I think it was a little too sweet for my liking. In terms of service, it was pretty slow (granted, there were only one or two servers). I found out by social media that this amazing vegan Mexican restaurant would, unfortunately, be closing down. I had to try their food before they were gone. After tasting a variety of their dishes, I am extremely saddened by their closing because the food was delicious. Below is a list of entrees and sides I tried: -Enchiladas de mole: fantastic Spanish rice and black beans. Delish. -Quesadillas: amazing and stuffed!! I couldn't tell the cheese was vegan (which is a great thing). -Tamales: a little sweet, dry, and crumbled easily. -Baja burrito cauliflower: it was a vegetable delight and gigantic. Been a few time and generally enjoyed their extensive menu and creative mocktails/drink selections. It's not common to see Mexican Vegan cuisine, and this place definitely does vegan well. The atmosphere is fairly cozy and casual, it has more of a neighborhood vibe, with all outdoor patio seating. Parking can be limited however and you may have to park on the street. Service was noticeably slow this most recent time around, it wasn't many people dining on a Sunday evening, we saw 1-2 waiters but had to wait quite awhile to place an order. The food was delicious, they start you off with some vegan chicharrons and salsa. I opted for the 8 taco taste of Cascabel sampler which featured all their "meats" which I thought was a solid value order if you have someone to share with. You get 8 tacos with 2 different types of beans, 2 different rice + guac and vegan queso.. which is a good amount of food. I liked/disliked some of the vegan meats and give them credit for their creativity, but would say overall I'm not a big fan of imitation meat personally. It's really a "to each their own" situation. I was also not a fan of vegan queso, but the guac was absolutely delicious. Overall I would say it's not a bad place to checkout if you're a vegan or looking for something different. TDLR: I could never wrap myself around liking this restaurant. The vegan meat tastes like plastic and they don't sell conchas. (Long version) For some reason I don't know why, but I could have sworn that they sold conchas, but I think I got them mixed up with other Mexican vegan spot in Dallas. Now that spot was the bomb.com!! I initially tried out Casabel when they opened. I came with my sister and we both ordered tacos. The food took some time to come out and when it did, the taste was very much like plastic or as if it had been wrapped in plastic ware for a while before cooking it. Absolutely not the best tasting. It was nasty even my sister agreed with me. When I came in this last time to get some conchas since I was craving some and Houston doesn't have any restaurant that sells vegan conchas. I was told that they didn't have any. So instead I ordered a flan. The flan didn't take long to come out less than 2 seconds of ordering. It came in a plastic container. The flan was disgusting and extremely bland. I've had flan before going vegan that it was very flavorful and delicious! However at Casabel, it tastes like nothing. I took two bites and tossed it. For $4, you'd think it'll taste like yummy goodness. Also, apparently, Casabel is closing soon. I asked the staff about it and of course they said that they didn't know when they were closing, but that would be. They don't know if they'll switch to food truck like Veegos or what. So much uncertainty for those who love this place. Came to Cascabel because I was really excited by the idea of Mexican Vegan food! It wasn't something I had tried before, nor something I've seen elsewhere in Houston (but if you happen to know of other spots, I would love to know!). The restaurant is in what was probably originally someone's house, so it has a very cozy, welcoming feel. In terms of house-like restaurants, this one leans more casual and hole-in-the-wall, rather than dimly-lit and intimate, if you know what I mean. When we came in on a Sunday afternoon, there was also live music playing, which really added to the ambiance. I ordered the Taco Mixer, which came with three tacos (your choice of "meat"), rice, and refried beans. I chose Picadillo (soy), Pollo en Salsa Verde (jackfruit), and Barbacoa (jackfruit) for my tacos. I really loved the Pollo en Salsa Verde and Barbacoa. Though they didn't exactly taste like their namesake, they were still really delicious. I did not really like the Picadillo. Overall, though, I thought the dish was great. It was also huge and very well worth the price. My biggest complaint about this restaurant is that the service is very slow. The food came out pretty quickly after we ordered, but it took a long time for someone to come take our order and for someone to bring the check. We were waiting for quite a while. Came here with a girlfriend of mine for a late lunch. We chose this place because it had great reviews on yelp and it's a vegan spot. It was pretty empty on this particular weekday afternoon and we were seated quickly. It's very small on the inside, but there's lots of seating & shade outside. I ordered the Birria taco special, which I believe had jackfruit instead of meat and it was absolutely delicious. Very flavorful, seasoned very well. I decided to look up vegan spots near my area. I came across Cascabel, which had many great reviews. The restaurant looks like a house on the outside. I did almost skip a visit because of it but decided to check on Yelp to see how the inside looks. The inside doesn't look how it did a few years ago. Currently, it looks a bit dark and underwhelming. I wanted to dine in but it was so cold inside, that I had to opt for take out. Prior to ordering I needed to use the restroom. I knocked and called out to see if anyone was in the restroom, received no response. Since I was the only customer inside, I assumed the women's restroom door may have been jammed. Come to find out, one of the staff was inside but did not say a word. I'm not sure if she didn't hear me or if there was a language barrier. She opened the door and walked past me without a smile or a response. It wasn't very welcoming but I tried not to let that discourage me. The males behind the counter were extremely nice and welcoming. They're the reason why I decided to still place an order. The homemade tortillas are thinner I was expecting. I placed an order for the Cascabel Platter and Mushroom flour tortillas. Both tasted delicious! I apperciate the large portion size and everything tasted so good! The workers were patient when taking our orders and extremely friendly, albeit the service was slow, and we had to flag down the servers a few times. I felt extremely indecisive when looking at the menu. There were several tasty options, and it was nice of them to be transparent about what ingredients were used to make the vegan meats! Ultimately, I ordered the Birria Tacos (which uses Barbacoa) and the Spanish Rice. - Birria Tacos (3.75/5): My first thought when I took a bite was that the tacos tasted like pizza. When I opened the taco, there was more cheese than the vegan Barbacoa (jackfruit). As a result, the pizza taste overpowered the birria soup, which I felt did nothing when I dipped the tacos into it; non-vegan Birria tacos tastes drastically different, so this was an experience, to say the least. Despite my qualms, the tacos were prepared well, and I enjoyed the overall texture! - Spanish Rice (2.5/5): To be candid, I was disappointed when I took a bite. I'm not too familiar with Spanish Rice, but I thought the texture was hard and severely lacking in flavor. This was my first time trying Vegan Mexican food and it was pretty good! Their chips with queso was honestly one of my favorite dishes despite the simplicity. The vegan cheese was pretty convincing and it had the slightest kick to it which really elevated the dish. I tried their street tacos as well. The pastor was pretty good but I think the barbacoa was just alright. I could tell it was jackfruit immediately. The tamales were a bit on the dry side so I had to use a lot of salsa. The mole enchiladas are good especially if you like potatoes. The quesadilla is a safe option as usual; I got pastor with mine and it was solid. My favorite dish though was the Birria tacos. I thought the flavor was good, but I felt like the quesadilla needed more cheese and was on the saltier side. The side salad that came with it definitely helped balance out the fattiness of the quesadilla, especially, the sour cream dressing which added more dimension to the overall dish. Overall, I found this dish tasty, but it did not really stand out against other quesadillas. - Crunchywrap (4/5): My favorite dish out of the ones we tried. Really great spot to check out on the NW side of town. I can appreciate the concept of creating an entire menu of Mexican food into a unique vegan cuisine. There were so many great options, I couldn't decide which one to get!!! I ended up ordering takeout and tried the birria tacos. The consommé sauce was really good too. I also tried their Horchata and it was the perfect amount of sweetness. They also have dirty horchata where you mix coffee with it but I prefer the original. There is indoor and outdoor seating but their patio is nice so I would recommend dining outside when you come. I have been twice to this vegan restaurant and enjoyed both visits. Self parking is available in front of the restaurant (5-6) spots and then whatever you can find on the streets nearby. Cascabel has a large uncovered patio in front along with indoor dining. It is a table service restaurant with a casual homey feel. I've tried the nachos and fried cauliflower as appetizers and then the burrito as an entree. All of it was very good taste wise and yes it was all vegan. The waitresses are friendly and helpful. Stop looking for places to go... this is the spot the food is amazing in quality and taste. A little vegan paradise with gluten-free options. They are extremely mindful of allergies which I really appreciated. I got the sampler with all 8 protein options and I will say that bc the faux-meats tasted SO much like real meat, I actually enjoyed the potato and mushroom proteins the most- but again, only bc I'm not a fan of meat. Lol. So this is the PERFECT place to take someone non-vegan. Jennifer was the main one we spoke to for our ordering and the personality, information, and honesty made it one of my all time favorite services EVER. I finally tried takeout from Cascabel and holy moly, why did I wait soooo long to do that?! I mean, other than the fact that this is not the most conveniently located for me . . . which is apparently the deciding factor these days, but anyway . . . I had the a burrito special, enchiladas, chile rellenos, and queso and chips. The burrito was by far, the star of my selections. It was massive and chockfull of delicious savory flavors. I was so kind to allow my husband to have half of it and he agreed that it was a pretty fantastic ensemble of ingredients. The enchiladas and chile rellenos were also pretty darn great, but they admittedly weren't as memorable as the burrito. Whatever Cascabel uses for their "meat" analogues - the texture and taste is perfect and delicious. As for the potato-based queso cheese - I wasn't sure what to expect as most vegan quesos I've tried have been nut-based, but this potato one was actually quite good, albeit, not very "cheesy" in flavor, still very delightful. Yes, I am back once more to continue tales of my restaurant journeys. Yayyyyy!!! Found a new Vegan eatery tonight and yes the excitement was real. Let's start from the beginning. The walk up was relaxed and casual with outdoor seating well spaced tables and adequate lighting night time eating outdoors. There was a server that was greeting at the door (always nice) and pointed out the indoor seating area, to find a seat inside anywhere and the server would be there shortly. However, I must admit, that I cannot omit the strong smell of mothballs in the inside dining. The facility was clean though, so I roughed it out. After sitting and waiting , 10 minutes later and a flagging down of a server, that was clearing and cleaning another table, who says she was going to find the server, only to return as the server. Yes, 10 minutes of watching other patrons be served, even those that entered after my table. I was really trying to figure out how to feel about being walked around, during this time. How do you miss me several times over @ 6'3 230 lbs, when there is only 3 tables being served out of about 10 with 3 servers 4 including my table. Yes, I am very patient!!! Finally, the food comes: Guacamole was bland with not very much seasoning, however the avocados were fresh. So, allow me to share more, the Tamale plate and Birria Tacos we're scrumptious to me especially at a Vegan restaurant, please add with a Mexican spin. I cleaned the plate, because it was good. However, the warmth from having so match patience and dampening my excitement for new place to enjoy vegan eating removed the thought of even taking pics a really nice meal for this Yelp review. Yall know how I am with vegan restaurants. This is my 5th try at vegan food and when it comes to taste.. very pleasantly surprised! Authentic tasting Mexican food. I really enjoyed the vibrant Mexican flavors in each taco we tried. We started out with the burria tacos and then ordered the taco plate, which allowed us to pick 3 different tacos with rice and beans split. Honest opinion, great flavors, BUT super pricey for the amount you are given. The birria taco plate was over $16 for 3 small tacos! And it felt like a snack. It's not very filling at all, while a regular birria plate is half the price and can lead you into a food coma. Also,we ordered the El taco mixer, which was more reasonably priced for $10.50ish. The charro beans were surprisingly tasty along with the chorizzo taco and pastor taco. I could have left the rice. What really got us on the price was how expensive each drink is. You will spend anywhere between $13-15 on a drink. I was shocked. If you look at everything in total, dinner cost us over $80 with 2 drinks and 6 tacos. Other than that, service was exceptional, and the feel of this "hole in the wall" restaurant is what I live for. Will I ever become a vegan? This truly was the worst service I have ever experienced. It took 45 minutes for the waiter to take our order and it took at least an hour for the food to arrive, with all the food in our party coming at least thirty minutes apart depending on the person. The tacos tasted good but the queso was cold by the time I got it. The waiter even accidentally hit my friend on the head with a plate when he brought the food to our table and did not apologize. The waiter never came by to check on us and we had to walk to the host stand twice to get water. They gave me pitchers of water at the host stand in order to fill our glasses. If you want to wait and WORK for your food, this is the place for you. read more

I have been here several times and everything that I've ordered is so delicious. I usually get the quesadilla plate with the picadillo meat - 10/10. This is a great vegan place to go, and a great Mexican place to go! I do have to take away a star for the ambience though, in my opinion they need some serious help with interior design. The food is tasty but I can't recommend it if you are eating vegan or vegetarian for your health. The food was very greasy. Like swimming in grease. I asked if the food could be made with less oil and they pretty much said no. I won't eat there again. read more
