Crumbville is such a unique bakery and record shop with a beautiful atmosphere and positive vibe. It has an old school Third Ward feel, but also reflects a contemporary mindset. I read somewhere that the bakery is set to close soon and wanted to share a few thoughts regarding how important this bakery is, not only to my original childhood neighborhood, but the city itself. What I love: how the building looks on the outside and inside; the owner is very kind, friendly and eager to converse with visitors; and the idea that you can purchase an album by The Jungle Brothers, David Axelrod, Andre 3000, De La Soul or D'Angelo along with sweet treats from the bakery is just so cool. As a cratedigger who loves buying records, this is just so impressive to me. The great artwork hanging on the walls is another plus. A family member bought a delicious strawberry cake for my birthday a few years back, and that was my first introduction to Crumbville. The owner's decision to offer vegan and gluten free desserts was a smart decision, but she also offers regular baked goods. During my first visit recently, I purchased a strawberry cupcake, which had a lime-flavored cookie base. It was sublime and reminded me so much of the birthday cake from years ago. I'm not sure how this place has so many excellent reviews, especially on the owner and the service...mainly why I called and put an order in. I put an order in with the owner 3 days prior for a VEGAN LEMON CAKE. She said yes (failed to say it was a lemon ginger snap cake) and it was doable. I explained that my friends are now vegan and that I had been scouring the city. She was so friendly and charming and I really wanted to love her and the output of her services/goods. But I don't. In fact, I'm severely disappointed. I told her I had a lunch at noon and needed the cake by 11:15 bc I have a lunch at noon on the other side of town(their website says they open at 11). She asked me to come closer to 11:30 which I came at exactly 11:30 and the cake wasn't even there! Her son was there and he was sooo incredibly nice! Gave me some vegan samples and I ended up getting the vegan chocolate chip cookies and the vegan Netflix & chill. It was alright but the chocolate chip was where it's at. Why 5 stars? Because after far too long, I finally made it here, and it was worth the wait. --- --- --- I discovered Crumbville over a year ago and it just never worked out for me to stop in and visit. Despite it not being super close by where we at lunch, I made it a point that it finally had to happen. And why did I wait so long?? When we first walked in, there was a line of people waiting to pay for what they'd picked out. But, the owner, despite being busy with all of these people, still greeted us and was going over all of the different options in the store, while she was ringing up people in line. When we made it to the front of the line, she could not have possibly been a friendlier human. It's no wonder the reviews here are so amazing, because even if you don't absolutely love the goodies, you can't help but enjoy coming in here. As for what we bought: Mayniac Munch = 4.5 stars. Red velvet, chocolate chip pecan cookie dough & oreos. This was solid when we snacked on a couple bites in the car, but so amazing when we got home and heated it up a little bit. Best of Both Worlds = 4.5 stars. Fudge brownie topped with chocolate chip pecan cookie dough and cream cheese. This was my wife's choice and something I wasn't super excited about. But I took one bite and next thing I knew, I had eaten half of it! Butter ThickHER Thana Snicker = 5 stars. Moist Butter cake with our Signature ThickHER Thana Snicker cookie (rich chocolate dough filled with peanuts, chocolate, Caramel, nougats & popcorn) baked inside. Honey, what didn't go well. Service 10 out of 10 the owner is fabulous. She gave a full description of every item in her store, a little bit of backstory about how she started and you can tell that everything in there is made with love. I love the set up. It's really cute, I love how she has her cookies and cupcakes displayed, and a description of each item. She has beautiful artwork all around the shop most of it created by her son, the creativity runs in the family. Everything looked so delicious. I wanted to try everything. It's a really small shop off of emancipation. I was actually surprised i had never seen it before bc i've driven down that way before many times. I saw it on tiktok and wanted to go try it. The owner was very sweet and went through everything i needed to know about her desserts. She even had samples of different flavors of cupcakes. These were some of the best sweets I have ever tried. My favorite were the cupcakes. I had the Sweet Potato Cupcake and the Chocolate Peanut Butter Snicker Crunch Cupcake. The cupcakes were heavenly moist, buttery, flavorful and topped with a creamy frosting. The cookies were soft with a just a hint of crunchiness. I looked over all of the cupcakes, because that is what I came for even though she has other offerings like decadent cookies.I decided I wanted the blueberries and cream cheesecake, the banana pudding, the sweet potato butter pecan crunch and the vanilla peachy cob-a-licious. I was very surprised by my favorite. It was the blueberries and cream cheesecake! I definitely thought it was gonna be vanilla pudding, which definitely came in second place. It is so divine that I don't really have words for what you feel when you bite into it. It's an explosion of flavor, the most moist of cake, the delicious frosting, it will soothe your soul. I was overwhelmed by the amount of options, but she was more than happy to provide suggestions based on my taste buds and even had some samples at the countertop! This comfort, neighborhood gem will be my new hangout spot to decompress with a confectionary delight, browse through the extensive vinyl records on display (and available for purchase -- along with Tees), and even some fo the games that are available for use on the shelves. i am SO happy to live in a city with this kind of sweetness, from its long line of cookie and cupcake concoctions to the welcoming, familial-like essence of Ms. Ella herself! My wife and I called Ella for help recently. We were going to be visiting Houston on my bday and were looking for cupcakes. I have been dealing with some health things and was eating a lot beige and bland, so I was bummed about not being able to eat cake on my birthday. But Ella (who is an absolute DELIGHT!) was able to help us find several stuffed cups (i.e. cupcakes that are stuffed with one of her cookies) that did not have: -chocolate -corn (syrup or starch) -dairy -blueberries (I CAN eat them but don't understand why anyone wants to?) It ended up being two, not brief conversations. She went out of her way to help me get some birthday stuffed cups! At the store, she requires everyone to wear masks and offers them to anyone who didn't show up with one. When we walked in the place was empty but apparently this was a very brief lull. Such a wonderful experience with an even nicer owner. I randomly stopped by recently not thinking about potential COVID changes and how they might affect business practices. When I got to the door, I saw a sign that said they weren't allowing walk-ins. Instead, they were only accepting call-in order pick-ups. The owner, Ella, came to door to see if I was picking up and once I shared that I'd never visited the bakery, she asked if I could wait about 10 minutes so she could take care of the previous orders first. I had time so I waited in my car and ordered straight from the site. She left me in and shared her disappointment in not being able to give me a hug since she, pre-COVID, hugged all her customers. *so sweet* After visiting the sanitizer station, I got my order which consisted of: a Vanilla Peachy-cob-a-licious cupcake, a Strawberries and Cream Cheesecake Cupcake and a Butter Pecan Crunch cookie. All were delicious but my fav was the Vanilla Peachy-cob-a-licious cupcake. I'm not even a huge fan of peach cobbler but this had just enough flavor to be amazing without going overboard.
