I was in the Travis St. Tunnel for lunch and saw him with his pop-up selling his bundt cakes! In the midst of the "lunch rush" there he was, off to the side next to a coffee stand, with many Bundts on display. I had been craving something sweet but didnt have many options down there. I went over and he won me over immediately with the Strawberry bundt and the Lemon bundt, but I ended up buying the Strawberry and Red Velvet. They were AMAZING! Super rich and moist. The icing was very complimentary along with the crumbles he added on top. Sometimes the richness combined with topping and icing can be overwhelming with a nice treat like this but he KNOWS his stuff! Very sweet man (the owner), I wish I got his name. When I find him again, I will be getting the Lemon and the Funfetti. If you're plant based, he has those options as well! Not surprising those were the ones he sold out of first. This place opened up down the street from where I work and it is such a TREAT. We have popped in a couple of times and purchased the mini individual cakes. I am a dessert/cake snob so anytime I'm in a new/different area, I always look up a new dessert to try. The Baker's Man had been on my list for a while so I decided to stop in. The owner was very nice, he made a great suggestion to get the sampler box since it was my first time. He had a great variety that day and was pleased by that. The cakes are cold, which...as a baker (though novice) and cake snob..I understand why. However, I DO NOT like cold cake. That being said...I was super hungry when I left and took a pinch of the red velvet. I can't lie...it was pretty delish even cold. Overall, I really enjoyed about 1/2 of the flavors (red velvet and funfetti being the most memorable, the others not so much (strawberry creme and pumpkin my least favorite due to flavor and texture). That says a lot about his passion and story for the love of baking! We played with the measurements to get the right look. He was professional and cost effective. Ok now to the delicious part!! I personally don't like chocolate cake because it tastes heavy on the Hershey's pallet but this was like a delicate Belgian truffle! (Like he used real cocoa powder and not brown colored flower with fake chocolate flavoring) My friends and I tried to guess the flavors and their favorite was the carrot cake. Hella nice dude. I asked what he would prefer. He told me the carrot cake and the red velvet. I got them for $10. Took them home. I opened the red velvet first. Instantly, I was overwhelmed by the sweet aroma... and slide my fork into the red velvet and took a bite. At that moment, I went from .... it was delicious. I don't have a favorite flavor [yet] because I pretty much love everything that I have tried so far. Everything tastes very fresh with different flavors to satisfy your sweet tooth. Saw a quick segment on the morning news a few days ago about this place, and made a mental note to try it out soon. So today I did. Big mistake. The store on Main Street is nondescript, and completely devoid of character. Most small businesses project a feeling of unique and enticing character created by the decor and design of the physical space. This place had neither decor nor design, and the tiny space was so devoid of character as to actually feel spooky. Fortunately we were soon greeted by a smiling and friendly young man who suddenly appeared from an unmarked door in the back of the store. He explained a bit about what they have - three different sizes of cake, seven different flavors, and a sampler tray containing one small cupcake of each of the flavors. We chose the sampler, which came in a long, skinny, plain white, unmarked box. We took the box home excitedly looking forward to enjoying it with our afternoon coffee. The first big problem was opening the box. I got the two ends open, and it appeared to have an inner tray that might slide out, but I could not get the tray to slide. I tried cutting the top of the box, hoping to get the tray to slide out without damaging any of the beautiful little cakes inside. The tray would not slide until I had painstakingly cut off the entire top. Then indeed the tray slid nicely along the bottom of the box, which then seemed pointless since now the top of the box was completely off. The small cakes were adorable in appearance, and I put two on a plate to cut in half and share with my spouse. We were both extremely disappointed. My spouse took only a few bites before spitting it out. I gave more of an effort and took a bite from each of the seven types, hoping to find one that met the claims of the many great reviews that I read about the place. Each cake was a disappointment. The flavors were not bad, but all seemed muted and faded, and the texture seemed like it might have been moist and had a soft, rich mouth feel when freshly made. All seven of those beautiful little cakes were well past their prime, though I would have loved to have them when they were freshly made. This is the very first Yelp review that I have ever written. My disappointment was so great that I felt an obligation to write about it. read more
