The place was such a pleasant surprise. The service was exceptional and it's cozy and clean. The chips and salsa are so good! I love tortilla chips but I usually don't eat the salsa that comes with it as I find it's either bland mush or too spicy-rarely any in between. But I could not stop eating this salsa-I could've eaten it by the spoonful. I even asked what was in it (roasted tomatoes). My son and husband both got the smoked cheeseburger and I wish I had too. Holy smokes, one of the BEST burgers I have ever had. Flavorful, cooked perfectly, fries were crispy. Wow. I wish I could say the same about my Huarache. It needed way more seasoning and the base corn tortilla was a bit thick (the only reason for the 4 stars, instead of 5). But I shared my son's burger because they're pretty substantial. This is a hidden treasure! Delicious, different food. Lots of choices for tacos, chilie relleno is perfect. Morales and pastor are mouth watering. The staff is friendly and attentive. The pottery glasses are very cool. There is a parking lot behind it so you don't have to try and parallel park on the main drag. We were on our way up to Arnold and wanted to stop in Angels Camp for Mexican foof and the reviews for Cascabel were good. When we got there we were starving! We got a table as soon as we walked inn the door, the hostess wasn't especially frieny but the one waitress was very friendly and welcoming. The waitress (possibly Noel) took our order right away and brought us chips, salsa, and guacamole. After waiting a whille for our meals we started to question if the kitchen wass running way behind. That's when our waitress came to the table and asked us to give her our order again. Initially we were not very happy but the waitress was so sweet we couldn't stay angry. When the meals arrived my enchiladas were slightly cold but the tomatillo sauce was amazing! Great flavor! In the end they ended up cutting out bill in half and also offered us free dessert, which we declined. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt that it was just an off night. We have just moved here 5 weeks ago and already have eaten here like six times. My son even wanted to come here for his birthday dinner. I have had the chile relleno, my husband has had molcajete, my son has had the pozole, and my other son the burritos. Everything is amazing. The service is top notch and very friendly. My husband always goes on yelp to find the out of the places that have great reviews. He came across this little place in Angels Camp.Well let me tell YOU this place is amazing. I grew up having my mother's great food (Which I miss a lot,) but when I had the enchilada's OMG, I had to tell the owner that they we're better than my mother's as to which I felt bad saying that about my mother, AMAZING! My husband had the Chile Relleno dish with creamy potatoes, and the granddaughters had fajitas, chicken nachos, and one had the chicken sandwich We sampled each plate and I have say that every single bite was amazing. They waitress has the most contagious personality, made you feel right at home. This family owned place is going far. I told one of the owners he should they need to teach cooking classes....believe you me they would have packed classes. I would highly recommend this place for service and of course the food. This is a moderately-priced Mexican restaurant with a more elaborate menu than you might expect, and excellent food. At the suggestion of the waitress (Tanya?) I had a chicken mole dish that was absolutely first rate. Not you chocolate mole, but a chile verde style that had excellent flavor, generous helping of chicken, with good side dishes. We had a 27 person birthday party at Cascabel's restaurant. We had the downstairs dining area all to ourselves! Shayna was our server and took care of us all night. She was very accommodating to our wishes. She let us decorate and bring in a birthday cake . The food was excellent, a taco bar served all of us with a couple of meals leftover! Easily the best restaurant in Calaveras County. Only Dogwood in Arnold is at this level of execution. I give Cascabel the edge because of the amazing flavors. Surprising find in our trip from Bear Valley. Family run, Authentic and delicious. The creamy green salsa (pipián salsa?) is my favorite. The huarache hit the spot. The tortilla soup was so different from the traditional style. It was unrecognizable as tortilla soup. The beef enchiladas were filled with chopped beef loaded with gristle. Unexpectedly fantastic food! We came to Angels Camp hungry for some Italian food however they had just closed for lunch. One of their employees suggested we walk down a few doors to the Mexican food restaurant. I was bummed because we had just had Mexican for lunch the day before and I was really craving Italian...however.. when we were greeted by a super sweet waitress with chips and amazing Salsa, my disappointment was quickly forgotten ! We ordered nachos (which were absolutely delish) followed by Molcajete for two (there were three of us that shared) and oh-my-goodness was it AMAZING! I live about an hour away and have told about everyone I work with about this little gem. Good thing I don't have two hour lunch breaks or I might be here daily! Please don't pass this one up! I've only had one meal here, just the basics to get a feel for the place. Chicken Tamale and beef taco. Average portions but heavy on flavor, and our waitress was a real gem. This used to be a Cali-mex inspired cuisine, but looking at the menu, this will be more mainstream with a fairly generous menu. My wife had their Cheeseburger sans cheese, and I was lucky to finish off the smoked thick flavorful patty. Plus they offer fries and waffle cut sweet potato fries. They also offers salad choices and four sandwich options. Pricing was just a tad high for our little downtown, but happy to pay it to try and support the local guy, who is obviously serious about his establishment. read more

I was kind of surprised that they were not super busy at seven on a Saturday night, but that was good for us. I decided on the mole verde, my wife had the chicken enchiladas. We were both very happy! My chicken breast was tender,juicy and perfectly cooked. The mole verde was wonderful. At first look the rice and beans looked plain, then I tasted them. Great deep flavor. My husband and I made the almost 30 mile trek to this restaurant because I had won a gift certificate to it, boy what a disappointment. Where do I start? First of all, the menu has only a handful of items on it. I kept flipping it over and over thinking I had missed something. Then I figured, if they only have a handful of items, I hope they specialize in them. My husband ordered the 3 taco plate and I ordered the garlic shrimp. My husband said his meal was fine but mine was a huge disappointment. First of all it was $15... It consisted of 9 shrimp on a small plate sitting in "margarine" and sprinkled with garlic powder. Really? I know it was margarine because I only use real butter in my cooking and this was oily and had a funky taste to it, definitely NOT butter. There were no little pieces of fresh garlic like you would assume, especially if they're calling it garlic shrimp ...just a sprinkle of powder. The worst part is, it did not come with rice and beans. Just two flour tortillas (I asked for corn and flour tortillas) and a side salad that I couldn't even eat. Why would you serve shrimp with just tortillas at a Mexican restaurant!?! I could barely choke it down. Don't all Mexican restaurants serve rice and beans with their entrees? This is the FIRST one I have ever been to that did not. It was a total thumbs down for me. I basically had greasy shrimp with dry tortillas for dinner, no Bueno. My only consolation was I didn't pay for the meal with my own money. I will consider and say this a restaurant is dedicated to serve the spoiled tourists of California with plates that they are a beautiful fusion in their small menu with a good mixed ambiance and of course flavors and aromas from the diversified regions of the United States of Mexico which are more than 25. My first visit will be a decisive personal factor to return and enjoy and this is why. I like the fact that did not have ethnic Decour to attract the eye of the clientele. I like the taste, flavor, aromas of my plate ( if I want to embarrass the cook I will add hot spicy sauce) I didn't like; that background music was popular rock 'n' roll 1990s. It will fit better a low volume music which could be more in tune with regional flavors an nature try Aztec music. NOT Regional radio station music which is annoying (boump, boump, boump). Try to incorporate a very basic level of Spanish communication with the general public because it's appreciated. Loved the willingness of their local staff. I don't give 5 stars for touristic areas or foods restaurants which will not be fair for those who do their best to give excellent service. I'll visit this restaurant again. read more
