This place is run by a lovely, energetic young couple - Pablito and Choronita. They're full of heart and enthusiasm for their business and it shows. My wife and I came in on a Monday afternoon around 1pm, expecting to just grab some basic Mexican food before driving back to the Bay where we live. But then the salsa was DELICIOUS. And the water came in these cute clay cups. Then the coffee came and it was AMAZING. It had cinnamon in it. My wife's margarita ROCKED. It was spicy and unusual and some real thought had gone into it. The food was excellent too. I got something - can't remember the name - steak pieces with bacon and cheese. I've got some dietary restrictions so went without the rice and tortillas and got a bad-ass Keto-paleo meal out of it. My wife got the taco platter and loved it. This young couple is bootstrapping, and Choronita was saying that when they opened, they didn't have a budget to redo the interior, so they kept the old decor of the previous business. They've done an amazing job with the resources they have, and this place is full of heart and soul. What else is there to say? Go visit these two. Bring your friends. Drink the margaritas. He is coming back up to Calaveras County for Thanksgiving and I plan to bring him back then for another meal. Wow! Everything was so fresh and tasty. The salsas were out of this world. The tortilla chips were fresh and perfectly fried. I had the taco plate with the carnitas, chicken and steak and all the meat was tender and very tasty. Best street tacos I've ever had. I love this place! read more

Beautiful interior, decor, hand-made mugs and cups, friendly staff, and delicious fresh food! The fish tacos were perfect from the fish itself, sauce, fresh veggies to the sauce and tortillas that held them together. Not sure how the ratings are so high. Boyfriend and I went for dinner and they had 1 empty dirty table. Took 15min to be seated. Food was gross (carne asada & chili rellenos) they charge $1 for each additional basket of chips which I've never seen done in a restaurant. This is the first time we ever tried Cascabel. The server, can't remember her name, was very pleasant and always had a smile on her face. Even as the restaurant got busier she checked on us to make sure everything was good. My husband ordered the fried avocado and says how great it tasted. There was a little bit of a wait as there was only one person handling the front. As we were waiting for a table, an exiting customer said "it's worth the wait." It took a while for our food to arrive, but the free chips and salsa were really good. (Chips freshly fried with just the right thin-ness and mild salsa with all the flavors nicely melded.) We got a second serving of chips and salsa before our food finally arrived, but it was indeed worth the wait. The creamy potatoes with poblano peppers were delicious. My Chile Relleno was excellent as well. The sauce was so good, I scraped as much of it off my plate with the accompanying tortilla. My family gave thumbs up to the tacos and enchilada as well. Even though she was the only one working the front, the waitress was really efficient, welcoming, friendly and cheerful. I overheard her mention to another customer that her boyfriend was the owner. Flavorful and piled high with fresh cilantro, lettuce and cheese atop a layer of fragrant carnitas and a fresh corn tortilla like thing. It was eye appealing although i forgot to take a pic to share! Place moderately busy. Took several minutes fir us to get table several minutes to get order taken and drink order. Drinks went empty never came back to refill. Place not so packed as to justify this. Food ticket times in excess of 40 minutes. Can not recommend. Would love to tell you about food. Still has not arrived. Seems like if service and times so poor they should think about closing. Now we have been here a hour and 6 minutes finally got refills. The food quality was ok portions where small. Would not recommend this restaurant. They have a lot to learn if they want to be successful. Not a recommended location if you value your time, or are hungry! Just went there this week, it was SO good, the food is very authentic, the portions are just perfect. I got the Rellanos, very good, we also got the Birria taco's, those were so tasty!!! The night I visited Cascabel there was only one server as the other one called in sick. The one server did an outstanding job greeting customers, taking orders, delivering the food, etc. and she remained upbeat and positive throughout the dinner service. I loved the mug in which my margarita was served. The margaritas were pre-made and stored in a plastic container in the refrigerator. Unfortunately, they tasted pre-made and stored in a plastic container. I ordered tacos and they were prepared the way that I like my street tacos, small with double tortillas and chopped onions and cilantro. The presentation was nice, but they could have been a bit more flavorful and spicy and a lot less oily. Sliced radishes would have given them a bit more spice. One thing that I found odd was the rice served as a side with the tacos was plain white rice. The retried beans were good. The historic building is beautiful inside. read more

I had the tacos for lunch and my wife had the mole. They were both great. This will be one of our go to spots when we visit Angels Camp.

The food is decent but the wait was horrible. It was over 20 min for the appetizer. We ordered a posole, burger and quesadilla. With 2 kids it hard to keep them waiting that long. We switched it to-go then it was STILL another 10 min wait. We won't go back if there are more than 2 people seated. read more

So I grew up eating a lot of authentic Mexican food (Tex-me) and have NEVER been able to find food of his flavor, spice (love hot stuff) or quality since I moved to California in 2007 and this includes my 7 years in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Am I a foodie snob, yes- especially when it comes to Mexican food and Salas, sauces, and tacos. Then had my first Cascabel tacos with 2 of the best sauces I have ever had in my life!! If you like FULL flavor, fresh & clean, and delightfully authentic tacos and other Mexican food and you are in the area, you have GOT to stop at this place. The service is really good too and reasonably fast. And the location is cool too cuz it's in downtown Angels Camp which means you can some of the best tacos you'll ever have (El Pastor & Carnitas with w/extra lime and cilantro please!) and then pop in for a movie and the charming little local theater a block up or walk up and down for some unique window shopping while you wait for your food. Nuf' said- just GO there!!! You won't regret it! Ps- it might also be interesting to note that there were 2 Mexican-ish restaurants here before that didn't touch this place so if you've been in downtown Angels camp for a Mexican meal like 2-3 years ago, it was probably at the other restaurants. We came here as a last resort since nothing else was open, not expecting much. Ordered tamales and fajitas. Honestly much better than we expected, and complimentary chips and salsa were good too. My daughter and I were traveling in the Gold Country and landed in this excellent restaurant at the end of the day. We were surprised and delighted at the quality of food in this out of the way place. The drinks arrived with thin crisp tortilla chips and homemade dark black dipping sauce that was unique to us and quite delicious. We both ordered the Chile verde enchiladas, with hand made corn tortillas, and topped with sour cream and guacamole. The presentation was lovely on a stark white square plate. The refried beans and rice were served in a thick oval casserole dish that kept them hot throughout the meal. The enchiladas were far and away the very best that I have ever had anywhere. My daughter said the margaritas were also exceptional. The waitress was attentive, friendly, and took the time to explain how the dishes were make. This place belongs in downtown San Francisco! Wooowww!!! WOW! I blown away by Cascabel's progressive menu and the depth of flavors. The meat is perfectly cooked and high quality - no grissle or chew - juicy and tasty! The fired avocados melt into a creamy filling inside crunch tempura batter and the bacon aioli dipping sauce will have you licking the inside of the container! The highlight of my night was the Quesabirria. I went back for another one on my way out of town. Salute to chef, Pablo.
