I just got home from Casa Maria's and I realized how lucky I was to have such a fabulous restaurant right down the street....breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks from the bakery have all been pretty damned good. This update is also to mention that service has gotten noticably better and the have added several rows of booths for much more seating. I have become addicted to thier migas lately (Yasmine is right...perfect hangover cure...and I needed one this morning!)...freshly made, covered in melted cheese and served with bacon, potatoes and refried beans....throw all that in a tortilla and cover it with Casa Maria's rockin' salsa and you have a breakfast that can't be beat. read more

I've been to Casa Maria, oh, I'd say about 235792 times. The food won't blow your mind, but it's consistently above average for great prices, and you'll always leave full. I usually go for the enchiladas de espinaca, while my boyfriend gets the Doña Maria plate, which has 3 different enchiladas (cheese, chicken, beef) with 3 sauces (red, green, mole). With a big glass of horchata - the cups are so huge they might as well just give you a bucket and be done with it - it's a very satisfying meal. The pastries in the bakery are similar: not mind-blowing, but they hit the spot for brunch, with the requisite horchata trough of course. What I really like about Casa Maria is the atmosphere, especially when there's live music. It's almost the platonic ideal of a friendly neighborhood restaurant, and I spent a really lovely afternoon there eating chips and salsa and watching World Cup soccer with other folks who live nearby. I'd recommend it not so much because it's the best cuisine you'll ever have but because it's always a solidly enjoyable place. read more

Never had I had a more disappointing service experience in my life than I just did at the South Austin location. We arrived at 11:55, placed our order for food at 12:05 and did not receive it until 12:40. The weekends are generally more crowded and food items do take more time--this is an allowance I am willing to make. However, 35 minutes is unacceptable, especially when not one, not two, but three different tables who arrived after us got their food before we did. We were two people who ordered two not even remotely complicated breakfast plates. My plate was also brought to me incorrectly. Two pancakes, eggs and bacon that I specifically asked be placed on another plate. The plate was brought to me with bacon on it and the waitress said she would "fix it". I guess fixing it is removing the majority of bacon and then wiping the residue off the same plate and bringing it back to me... With some bacon still on it. It wasn't an altogether unreasonable request... I literally asked for an item to be placed on another plate. I know there are attitudes that might consider this request stupid or dumb just because I choose to not eat meat but if I am giving you money for a service and specify just how I would like to receive those services, I would hope that an establishment that literally depends on satisfied patrons would be able to accommodate a simple request. The most insulting part was that we were offered no explanation or apology and were charged full price for the meal. I live in the area and have been here multiple times and to take my guest to a place I thought would have good service only to experience this was embarrassing. If you look at my yelp history it has easily been a year or two since my last review as I haven't had an experience so mindblowingly negative (or positive) that would prompt me to stop and take the time to write out a complaint like this. Don't go here. And if you do, stick with the panadería next door. And leave quickly. This place is ridiculous. $20 for idiotic service. read more

I am so impressed with this place. It is so authentic and such a reasonable price that this will be my go to place when I'm craving real Mexican food in Austin. I got the Enchiladas Supremas and everything on the plate tasted authentic and delicious from the beans and rice to the guacamole. Disappointed. I knew something was up with this place when the host laughed at the guy in front of us who had "just one". Service was super slow. Waited 30 minutes for enchiladas, and they were cold. I requested charro beans and got refried. We asked for some flour tortillas with our meals and looked at each other funny when our server returned with two flour tortillas. I wasn't going to write this bc I love this place so much but I still haven't heard from a manager so.... Get it together guys! We come here on Sundays for breakfast and then at least once a month for dinner and it just seems to be going downhill. The food isn't as delicious as it once was but the real problem is that I called a week ago to make a table for 12 for my bf's employees and they weren't ready for us. They said there was no note left saying that I had called? Okay? So they threw a table together for us last minute but since it was Sunday evening, everyone was dragging ass and acting like they didn't really want us there. Embarrassing considering we had been raving to his employees about how friendly the service is? The restaurant was EMPTY so I'm not entirely sure why it took nearly 10minutes to put silverware and menus on a table but alright.... In a city polluted by Tex Mex, it's really not a good idea to piss off your loyal customers. read more

This place has delicious, over-stuffed breakfast tacos on THE MOST DELICIOUS HOMEMADE TORTILLAS FOR DIRT CHEAP!! I am a huuuuuge Torchy's fan, but I will definitely come back to Casa Maria for their fabulous and fresh tacos again and again and again. When I discovered Casa Maria, a light dawned. Unlike the TexMex I was used to, this was comforting without being greasy, fresh and flavorful without burning my mouth. And the salsa, while simple, is my favorite in town. I stopped going here for a long time, and I really don't know why. Don't let the strip center & exterior fool you. Inside, it's a little gem of a spot -- nicely decorated in classic Mexican restaurant style, very clean, comfortable booths, reasonably quiet. The best deal on breakfast is the tacos -- pick from lots of combos for under $2 or try the steak fajitas taco for $2.50. Eat well for $5! Nice folks with friendly service. I just got back from Texas and had the pleasure of eating here twice with my father. It seems to be a favorite of the family. On trip #1, I ordered the Pescado de la plancha. It was Good Friday, so I thought I'd eat some fish. This dish was great. A nice healthy portion of catfish with rice and salad. They even threw on some pan fried potatoes which were a cross between hash browns and home fries. I also had a margarita which was good, not the strongest, but not bad. On trip #2, I had the Caldo de Pollo. This dish was also very good. It was a nice healthy serving of 2 drumsticks, potato, carrot, corn, and cabbage. The broth was very clear and tasty. Ok. I think they put crack in the food...I am addicted to this place. A friend took me here and told me to try the menudo. I hate menudo. Despise it, would be more accurate. I tried it. After 3 minutes I was licking the bowl. I have been there 6 times since. The last two times I tried the mole and puerco rojo. Licked those plates too. These are the most similar breakfast tacos in Austin that I have found to South Texas/Corpus area Mexican breakfast. Their tortillas are thick and homemade, ingredients are mixed in(not just a strip of bacon on the side), salsa's, red and green are on point. Whether you're picking up or sitting in for breakfast, they're super fast. They also have amazing huevos rancheros. Another plus side is that they're priced like breakfast tacos should be. read more

Don't go to this restaurant!!! Their waitress/waiters are overworked and fail to take responsibility for their actions. On Sunday September 1, a waitress was carrying way too many dishes and they fell and hit my 8 year old son on the shoulder. One waiter, not the one that dropped the dishes but another one rushed to say he was sorry and started to clean the chair but offered no medical help nor did the manager take responsibility for her careless waitress mistake. I will never attend this restaurant in my life and if you go please be careful with your children because it could happen to you. read more

One of the first things I look for in mexican restaurant is quality of flour tortillas and salsa. They tend to be good indicators of the overall quality if a place and Casa Maria's does not dissapoint. From traditional dishes like tacos al pastor to tex-mex favorites like barbacoa, this place is as authentic ad they come. My wife and I started going the Casa Maria's after church on Sundays and it was always packed. Even though it was packed, service and food were great! However, recently we have gone on different time, when it was not packed. For instance we went on a Friday, in which it was not as busy as most Sundays. It took 20 minutes to get a michelada and a beer. Then almost 40 minutes for 4 potato and egg tacos. Recently out order was all messed up and the server didn't seem concerned. We ate here last night based on a recommendation from a friend. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The queso was just a bowl of melted cheese. I prefer my queso to have some cilantro, or tomatoes, or something. It was only slightly better after we added some salsa to it. We did get a ton of food for the money spent, but it wasn't as great as we were expecting. I had been to Casa Maria with friends once in the past and thought the food was very good, then amidst all of the other Mexican restaurants, especially the ones closer to my new house, I forgot all about this place. After our favorite Mexican restaurant right by our house changed management, lowered their quality and raised their prices, we decided to start trying out new places. We stopped into Casa Maria at around 1:00 pm for breakfast the day before yesterday (a Tuesday). We were seated right away and the service was quick - the chips, salsa, and Mexican Cokes we ordered arrived at the table before we even had a chance to decide what food we wanted to order. Speaking of the salsa, this is one of my new most favorites in Austin. We even ended up eating almost all of our second refill of it. We each ordered two breakfast tacos and sides of charro beans. The charro beans here are the best that I have had in Austin - absolutely delicious! There's such a nice balance of beans, ham, bacon, onions, and large chilis, and just a small amount on the spicy side, but so full of flavor. My egg and cheese breakfast tacos were very good as well. The house-made tortillas are some of the best around - very thick and fluffy. The scrambled eggs were also a nice and fluffy consistency. We will definitely be coming back again soon to try the lunch or dinner menu! read more

We've come here often to eat but today was a bit different ., when they brought me my plate I noticed that they had served me very little rice that comes with my meal. So I had asked the waitress if she could please give me a sufficient amount of rice on my plate, she told me that If I wanted to buy a side of rice and I told her no, that I only wanted them to add some rice to the two table spoons that was on the plate and she said she couldn't do that . So I handed her the plate and told her that I didn't want it then and she told me that I still had to pay for it ! I told her no I'm not that I didn't even touch the plate so she goes to get her manager... he tells me that's the amount they put on the plates . I said well it's very little all I'm asking is for a decent amount of rice .OMG!!! He said I'll do it this time . And he comes back with an even smaller amount of rice then what was on my plate. I don't understand why they have to act that way with rice. I work at a restaurant and if one of my customers fells like I'm being skimpy then I'll add more, no big deal... I mean for real how much does rice cost??? Not sure i will be coming back any time soon read more

Yet another shining star in the constellation of excellent South Austin Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurants. They have plenty of virtues: - Breakfast all day - Outstanding homemade tortillas - Cheap lunch specials - Great horchata, and lots of it - Copious menu - An awesome panaderia, one of the best in the city - Cheap + strong + good drinks And so on. I wander back and forth between a few things on their menu, namely their breakfast tacos with the aforementioned outstanding tortillas, their tortas (which remind me of Habanero's in that they both use crustier bolillo bread instead of the softer bread most other places use), and whatever lunch special happens to strike my mind at the time. Follow your meal up with a stroll to the panaderia and some coconut cookies, you won't regret it. read more

My experience was okay. The server was very nice, just wasn't his fault the cooks in the kitchen were very slow. I don't mind waiting when the food is exceptional, but when you wait 25-30 mins. for your food and the potato and egg taco looks like they only gave you 1/2 an egg. A hungry man won't be happy. It has to be restaurant quality Casa Maria's. I regret that I should have just made my own breakfast. However, the pandulce was great, so was the coffee. Open at 5:30am? Umm...yes please. This itself is a trademark of an excellent restaurant. The food is fan-freakin-tastic! The drinks are excellent. The service is terrific. This family that owns and operates it are some excellent people overall. I've known them for years and somehow, they always remember me when I come in. I really love their panaderia too! They carry some of the harder to find items that you just can't find anywhere else either. I like to go to Casa Maria's at least a few times a year and am always impressed with every facet. Only thing is parking isn't exactly the best but we do find a place. However, we all know they have nothing to do with that aspect. Come hungry and be ready to leave with a full belly and ready for massive nap. :) read more

I can't believe I have never eaten here before. The beans and rice are usually not my favorite part of mexican food meals anymore-however Casa Maria made them the favorite part of my lunch. The rice and beans were nicely spiced with just the right amount of fat to taste yummy. I had suisse enchiladas-very fresh tasting with moist smoked chicken inside and the perfect amount of sauce. The salsa is spicy and very fresh, but the chips do not compliment the salsa well (I like thin crispy chips and these were thick). The service was good, but not great. We were served quickly but no one came to check on us much (we were there about 1 1/2 hours socializing). Check out the huge Panderia attached and next door. Lots of great looking goodies. read more

I need to start off by saying that Casa Maria does not take American Express. That's a rather important point for people who might like to go there. I noticed that they have their own ATM machine so if you get stuck with just your AMEX and no cash, you do have that option available. All right, a friend of mine recommended this place to me as one of her favorite mexican restaurants in Austin. All I have to say is, I'm going to start questioning her taste. Wow! I was completely underwhelmed by this place. For those of you that like migas, I would seriously consider that you go to El Rincon in Pflugerville for the Platinum standard in migas. They have a plate of migas twice the size of what you'll get at Casa Maria at the same price. The migas I ordered at Casa Maria were absolutely tasteless; I kept adding hot sauce to it to see if I could get any kind of flavor going but nothing resulted. The potatoes were under cooked. My first visit was after 9pm on a Friday night. Happily, the place was not crowded at all. A nice little Mexican band (NOT mariachis) was playing and, although we dislike mariachis, we found that we really enjoyed the band. Service was acceptable, but nothing special. The table they placed us at was not clean when we arrived, but someone quickly came and cleaned the table and apologized for the bus boy. Although we sat in the back as far from the band as we could get so we could talk, we found that the wait staff had trouble hearing us. We ordered house frozen margaritas, which were definitely nothing special. My friend ordered the plate with three different enchiladas on it. Everythig was tasty and she had so much food she had to take some home. I ordered the Carne Guisada, which was good, but again, nothing special. Tortillas were fresh and home-made. You don't pay at the table, you pay at the register on the way out, but no one tells you that in advance. That process also makes it a little difficult to break up a ticket and leave a tip on the table, because you don't know how much each thing costs and you don't know the total until you get to the register. The recommendations on Yelp were so good we decided to give it a try. Food (especially the tortillas) was good enough that we'd go back and give it another try, and I might just go back for that little band! The one thing I'd say about the decor is that those plastic grapes and grapes leaves hanging from the lattice work on the ceiling need to go. They're doing nothing but collecting dust (and representing Tuscany in the 80s) and making you wonder how much of that dust might be falling into your food!!!!! Yuck. read more

Three Words.... BIG RED MARGARITA! Wow those Ritas were amazing. In addition I also had the Carne Asada. I wasn't really that impressed. Part of it was really over cooked. The Guac was good, but they load the bottom of the bowl with shredded lettuce (I hate that). My biggest complaint was we waited for like 30 minutes to be seated and then another 15 or 20 for someone to even acknowledge us. Only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 2 or 3 was the Rita.
