Desirous of a burrito I stopped in at Casa Latina. The place was so inviting looking that immediately after placing my order I decided we should eat there, not at home, and followed with this: "I ordered wrong". Burritos are the sort of thing I order as a take-away, never a dine-in, and Casa Latina proved my natural instincts correct. Everything being brought out to others looked far more appealing than my Carne Asada Burrito which was bland and completely uninspired. The person who ate my leftovers later that evening concurred: "that burrito was missing, like, everything...". To wit, the carne asada wasn't flavorful, there was no pico de gallo, very light on the requested pinto beans, and the hot sauce had all settled into a single section which I'd not encountered while eating. To say I'd not get a carne asada burrito here ever again is to speak truth. A Mariscos Burrito made with shrimp tasted much better. Everything about Casa Latina makes me think there's something I'd like on the menu and for that reason I took note of a taco Tuesday offering they feature. That said though, there's a lot of Mexican fare in Berkeley that I already know I like so the odds of a return visit - no matter how the decor charmed me - are running slim to nil. read more

Can't believe I never reviewed this place. I've been coming for years from various spots in the Bay. The staff are always friendly! The food is always fresh and delicious. My favorites over the years have been their nachos, platanos, and tacos. Their burritos and breakfast is also yummy! The dining area is space! It can easily fit a party of 10 and still have about 10 spots for customers. Lots of lovey images of Frida on the wall along with the large windows feels sweet. read more

It's been about 4 years since my last visit here. My sister wanted to try this place so we came after a coffee run in the area. Grab a menu, order at the front, get your number, and they bring out your order. I ordered the Pupusa plate (revueltas) again. After 8-10 minutes my order was brought out. The beans were delicious, the plátanos had delicious flavor (next time I'll opt out of the sour cream because it was very bitter). The pupusas were both different. One had black beans the other was like chicken but both had a very sour flavor. I tasted my sister black beans and they didn't taste bad so not sure if the mixture itself was bitter. It had an odor and taste like an orange when it has gone bad. I wasn't able to eat either of them so I just finished my beans and plátanos. The tomato salsa that comes with the pupusas has good flavor. The curtido was alright. My sister got a steak plate and I tried a couple pieces and her steak was delicious. My other sister had Chile verde and that was okay. I'm really disappointed with the flavor of my pupusas this visit. Will get the steak plate or something else if I find myself here again. read more

I always have found myself passing up this place every time I drive down San Pablo Ave and decided to give it a try for brunch. Menu with lots of options for both breakfast/lunch/dinner. I tried the spicy red sauce chilaquiles and as somebody that loves spicy food it's really spicy! Lol. Large portions so I was able to save the rest for leftovers and it still tasted amazing. My overall favorite was their iced horchata latte! I ended coming back multiple times just to get that to-go. Some places can't get the perfect balance of both like this place has. Service was pretty fast and we came around a busy time. I though the ambiance inside was gorgeous. We ended up talking about how great the frames and paintings looked. Came in last week after craving some pupusas! Upon entering, you'll see the register but more importantly, an entire section for pan dulce and other yummy pastries. Unfortunately, my group of 3 and I came in late at night and there wasn't much left (which is a great sign). I ordered a pupusa, a side of plantains, and a taco dorado. It was a bit much, looking back, but I was really hungry and the menu had so many options I was interested in! We were given numbers for the waiter to the deliver our food to our tables. Service was pretty standard - not quick or slow. However, the food was delicious! The pupusa was stuffed with its filling and so yummy with the curtido it was served with. Word to the wise...Dorado "crispy" tacos are nowhere near crispy. How do I know because I went all the way to get take out, excitedly came home, plopped on the couch and bit into 2 soft tortillas. No hard shell. No crunch. No Dorado. I was so confused I called and told them I was given the wrong order. Turns out crispy tacos for Casa Latina are just a grilled tortilla. The meat wasn't very good. And I dissapointedly ate the rest of my sad soft tacos. Came here on a Saturday afternoon with a friend. It's one of those places where you order and pay at the counter, they give you a stand with your number to put at your table, then they bring your food when it's ready. Plenty of spacious self seating. They also have a book case where you can leave a book, and take a book. My friend and I both had 2 different tacos each and shared an appetizer which were all tasty. Our only issue was we wished they would've brought our Nachos appetizer once it was ready so we could snack on it before our tacos arrived. Otherwise, it was a great time all around. Excellent ambiance, service, food. This place is so clean in every corner, including the bathroom, I could eat off of the floor. I the food was beautifully prepared and presented. The ambiance is wonderful, with details like little charming flowers on the tables. My only wish was that it could be warmer on the inside. It was a chilly day, understandably, they left the door open to welcome customers. However, it made for an uncomfortable dinner. There must be a way to keep it warm. I called to speak with a manager and three times they've said they'll call back and have not called me back. It's frustrating because so many people got sick not just members of my family. Yes, I know this spot has been on San Pablo Avenue for quite a few years as I've driven by it umpteen times. I would put it in my vast memory bank to try it and promptly lose the thought in an ocean of amnesia. Well, I finally stopped by on a West Berkeley walk. I wasn't looking for an actual meal because well, I ate about an hour before, but hey, I was seduced by their panaderia selection as it looked particularly alluring. I ended up getting a little too aggressive with my tongs because everything looked good. I grabbed what I think was a Bandera, a huge tri-color shortbread cookie that looked like Neapolitan ice cream (photo: https://bit.ly/3xLMQ0C), and then a croissant-like pastry with a buttery lemon filling and dusted liberally with powdered sugar (photo: https://bit.ly/3MThWI2). I enjoyed the trio of treats with Jamie W. when I got home, and we agreed they were among the best panaderia goodies we've had. I thought I should come back for a proper meal, which I did earlier today. I could see most of their business was on the savory side of the menu which was quite robust. I had no idea they were famous for their tamales but I'll save those when I come back with Jamie. My boyfriend and I have been here a few times for breakfast and most recently Taco Tuesday. Ambiance: The restaurant is pretty spacious with the pastry selection on the right as you walk in, and the counter with agua frescas in the middle. There's a larger table near the window where people frequently sit or wait for their order. Further inside to the left, there's a variety of tables to choose from. The decorations look authentic and it has a very home-y feel. Service: The ladies at the front taking our order have always been nice and answered questions we may have about the pastries or menu. They give you a number and the food comes out pretty quickly. Food: Our usual go-to is the burrito. The burrito is huge and well-stuffed. He usually gets the Carnitas Burrito and I get the Carne Asada one. For the last breakfast, he got the Breakfast Burrito and I the Breakfast Sandwich with Chorizo. They're pretty similar with one being in a wrap and the other in bread. Both are tasty! While I don't love the pastries because they're dry, we do love the fruit-filled muffin-like pastries. Our most recent visit was on Taco Tuesday and it was amazing! $2.50 for very well-proportioned tacos and $4 for refreshing agua frescas. We each got 4 tacos because I thought they'd be smaller, and I was so full after. I had one Carne Asada, one Al Pastor, and two Chorizo tacos. They were all great, and the Al Pastor really had the pineapple pieces. My favorite were the Chorizo tacos! I've had chorizo in other items from here but the flavor was heightened in the tacos. It was juicy and saucy, a little burnt on the bottom which I liked. The salsa on top had the perfect kick of spice for me. He enjoyed his Pineapple agua fresca and I loved my Horchata! The chilaquiles rojos were spicy, but sooo good! The nice lady at the front did warn us about the spice level when we ordered, but we did not waver. Their refried beans are vegetarian-friendly. The chips were a little soggy by the time our plate arrived since they were drowned in sauce, but not complaining since everything was delicious once mixed. Next time, I would try to see if they can substitute the scrambled eggs for fried eggs. The bakery selection is extensive, especially if you arrive in the morning. The staff recommended the chocolate concha which was perfectly fluffy inside and had a powdery chocolate (and a hint of cinnamon?) crust on top. The interior seating is so beautiful with large windows and stunning portraits of Frida on the walls. Casa Latina offers some of the best Latin American cuisine in Berkeley!! I highly recommend going to this restaurant if you're looking for this type of food in the area or just want to experience something authentic, relatively inexpensive, and tasty!! This restaurant has two compartments: a bakery/ordering area and an equally spacious annex for dining. After we ordered our food, we observed a selection of baked goods including elephant ears, banana bread, and cookies (which weren't sprinkled). We unfortunately didn't purchase any of these items but would definitely try them in the future!! Since we decided to dine in, we helped ourselves to napkins, utensils, and non-iced water (with straws). As seen in the pictures, the silverware was clean and the straws weren't translucent. Furthermore, our orders were neatly plated in a timely manner. In fact, it only took the Casa Latina employees about 390 seconds from the time we ordered to when our dishes arrived at our table. My dish was the Enchiladas Verdes with chicken and his dish was the Chicken Burrito with sour cream and no guacamole. The Enchiladas Verdes plate was simply exquisite! Down to the presentation, taste, and speed of the dish, everything exceeded my expectations. To be honest, I was a bit hesitant to order the Chicken, given other restaurants' tracks record of dry chicken. However, that's where Casa Latina differentiates itself -- the chicken was moist, seasoned to perfection, and complemented the rice. Speaking of which, the bean-rice ratio was 0.8, which is a metric not found anywhere else on San Pablo Avenue. The Chicken Burrito was superb! His favorite part of this meal was that the rice and chicken were seasoned well with the perfect amount of spice. Additionally, the Burrito's other ingredients were evenly dispersed so no one ingredient was too localized. He mentioned that this is something he found uncommon in burritos as many other restaurants confine certain ingredients in burritos to specific locations. In turn, he sometimes ended up eating bites of mostly sour cream in these restaurants. In terms of his burrito's thermal energy, he couldn't have asked for a better temperature!! The tortilla was crispy yet chewy- a texture balance only found at Casa Latina. In total, I highly recommend checking out Casa Latina. read more

I drive by Casa Latina every time I'm in the Berkeley area. It definitely has been on my radar for places to try. The city of Berkeley is not necessarily known for its Latin restaurants, so my hope was that Casa Latina would prove this to be a wrong theory. They don't offer table service, all orders are placed at the counter/bar area. The menu has a variety of offerings that all sound tempting. Don't ask any questions because attitude is what you'll get. We ordered a variety of food to share. The chips and salsa aren't free. They're house made. Fresh, crispy, and overpriced for the portion. The crispy tacos aren't crispy. The shells were warmed and disappointing. I will say the chicken is probably the winner out of all of the proteins offered. One of the few things that actually was seasoned and tasty. The shredded beef/Barbacoa is bland and chewy. The two things that Barbacoa should not be. The empanadas, while vegetarian, lacked flavor and appeal. The outside was light and crispy. The pupusa was a huge disappointment. Bean and cheese. It should be delicious. It was bland af. If you are looking for the killer deal, the burrito absolutely is it. It is shareable because it's huge. Filled with nice chunks of chicken, beans, rice, and all the goodies. Seriously the killer deal. Overall, I found most of the food to be flavorless, and underwhelming. To add salt to the wound, they are highly overpriced, and I'm not sure that it's worth the push to check them out. Other than the fact that parking is not that difficult to find in the area which is unusual, and, for $15 the burrito would be the go to. As a sidenote, if you are interested in authentic pan, they have a nice little bakery area. I was planning on checking it out, but after the disappointing overpriced food experience, I was pretty much done. Drive by, wave, and pretend that you were there.
