Not once, but twice. That's how many times we *had* to visit here within a three day period. And no one was twisting our arms. That is how impressed we were. I give credit to my buddy, Denny B for this discovery. Hiya, Denny! This ended up being a well placed stop off for us IE'ers, always in a quandry where to eat on our way into the big city for the theatah or a concert. Easy access to the freeway, adequate parking, and better yet, tasty food. And even though the place was teaming with hungry customers for a Sunday afternoon, our food came out quickly. First visit: Carnitas - We went for the items that seemed to be mentioned the most frequently in the reviews. Absolutely no regrets here. The carnitas not only consisted of huge chunks of nicely marbled meat, it had a crunch to the outside that was uncommonly good. The inside of each bite was still tender and moist. The portions were mucho grande. Chile Verde - What impressed with this dish was the tender bites of meat and the quantity. What did not impress was the verde sauce which was blander than we are accustomed to. No spicy bite to it, and no herbal overtones. While good, we have had much better. The second visit, Mr. B ordered a combo meal of Garlic Shrimp and Carne Asada - There were 3 medium shrimp, cooked oh so perfectly with brown, crispy garlic chunks on top, and a thin, well marbled rib eye that was equally perfect (they actually listened when we said medium rare!). Too bad the refried beans were bland. I am forced to admit we have had better. We are tough customers. The Chicken salad - a generous portion of lightly marinated, grilled chicken breast was chopped into bite sized pieces and placed over a wonderful salad. This was a good dinner that had all the marks of healthy. One of the most popular dishes we noticed was the Fried Tilapia (whole). Keep that under your hat for another visit. Food is disgusting. We placed a order of 2 menudos, and it seems that they didn't wash the meat, the whole plate smelled bad, and besides that no flavor. We asked for the bill immediately ans explain the waitres the problem, but instead of offering a alternate meal, he kind of gave us attitude. We didn't want to leave without paying for a service even that the food was bad, but we didn't want to risk our health, just for 40.00 dollars, we left the food almost intact. Very disappointed...was looking for a good neighborhood taco place and saw this place near Home Depot. Didn't realize their street tacos came from gutters of TJ...had better tacos there w/Montezuma. Their Asada started smelling bad as I was getting on the 210 to my awaiting lunch guests...too late to find alternative had them squeeze all the lemons on the tacos and pour mucho salsa...the only reason I didn't give them a 1 is that their Roja y verde salsas are very good. -My previous job was near this restaurant and every morning and afternoon I used to drive past it. I never went to eat here because I always brought my lunch from home. On my last day with the company, a few of my coworkers and myself went to eat here for lunch. I have heard good things about this place from other coworkers so we all decided to try it out. Upon arrival we asked for a big table and they sat us right away. They gave us chips and salsa on the house. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. He took our orders and refilled our drinks. I ordered two tostadas de ceviche. -First thing, the fish was good, not too lemony or salty and not too soggy. The tostadas were topped up with so much fish. They also topped the tostadas with a lot of slices of avocado. By the time I wanted to take a bite of the tostada, it was very soggy. I just used the chips they brought when we arrived to eat the rest of the ceviche and ate the rest plain. My coworkers ordered different dishes which some said they were okay and others didn't like their food. -Not too bad of a sit down restaurant. They did take a little while to get our orders out to the table, but maybe because we had a large group. It is spacious inside with no outdoor seating. Tons of parking to chose from. The service is kinda like a pho place except without actually having ... pho. Anyway, came here for lunch and my coworker and I had the most difficult time trying to read the menu. Basically all the lunch special combos they had weren't that appealing but if you order a la carte, then you'd be stupid for not ordering lunch special, right?! The pressure was definitely on when the lady came back every minute or so to ask what we wanted but we still had this perplexed look on our faces. BUT... we finally chose our dishes! I'm kind of a pastor buff .... and I couldn't stay away from it despite it being on the a la carte menu and my coworker loves chimichangas so got the chicken one for her lunch special. The chips and salsa were okay-- chips were thin and not too greasy and the salsa had nice hefty chunks and a bit watery. But they were free so no big deal. My pastor burrito was pretty big. I've had bigger burritos from legit Mexican places and also Chipotle so this was okay-sized when you compare all of them side by side. Otherwise, the pastor was kinda hard. It's not like the tender soft pastor you get at other places with a crispy exterior here and there. It also wasn't flavored as well as it could have been and pretty much tasted like salt. The burrito pretty much was rice and beans with meat. The taste got pretty repetitive after a while but you did get some nice orange oil from the pastor soaking into the tortilla. Yay for oil! The chicken chimichanga was pretty small but I guess they were lunch portions coming with a side of rice and beans and guac. It looked pretty unappetizing and after our meal, we both agreed that this place was ok at best, despite their quick and attentive service. The misleading part were the $1.50 taco signs... nowhere on the menu did they say that since they were like $2.50 a la carte tacos. Maybe you gotta ask them? Because $2.50 is ridic for tacos... unless they are massive. Oh, watch out for food coma afterwards! Whew! Sorry it took so long to write this. I was in a jamb last Christmas for our company party. La Tolteca wouldn't take my order so I was scrambling THE DAY OF our party to find a caterer. By chance I called Casa Jimenez (just googled Mexican food) and they were a LIFE SAVER to say the least. I ordered food at 10am for 15 people and they came through big time! We picked up the order and everything was delicious! Tacos, enchiladas, rice, and probably the best refried beans I have ever had. Went there for lunch today, this place is a hidden gem. I ordered the carne asada plate that came with rice, beans & extra regular taco. I thought I was going to be hungry still.. But I thought wrong... They gave us chips and salsa right when we sat down, two different type of salsa. Green salsa was spicy but good, mild salsa was good too. The fiancé has been wanting to try Casa Jimenez for a while. After looking at their extensive menu for a while we ultimately decided to try the all you can eat (AYCE) menu for $10.99. We figured the price difference for an entree vs. a AYCE was maybe $1-2 more so why not! The AYCE comes with salad, soup, choice of three items with beans and rice. After getting through our first three item plate, we were getting pretty full (the items are generous portions). Here's what we tried: -Chile rellano It was very cheesy and prepared very well. At first I though the rellano could have had more flavor or some type of salsa to help, then halfway through the seeds inside started giving it a good kick. -Carnitas taco The pork was a little dry, the taco together was just average tasting. -Chicken taco This one was prepared in a hard shell taco. After one bite, the fiancé gave up because the shredded chicken was not edible. -Something Coronado I think it was beef? This dish was actually pretty good! The sauce looked dark red, but wasn't spicy, it tasted a little tangy to me. -Beef taquitos The fiancé tried this one and you could see how crunchy it was. Not the best item for him. -Chicken chimichanga The way they prepared it, it looked more like a stuffed quesadilla than a fried burrito. I only tried a bite, it was just ok as well. -Beef tostada The beans and shredded beef soaked the shell on the bottom so much that it was not a very appealing dish to eat. The quality of this beef wasn't great. -Huevos Ranchero The fried eggs were prepared really well!! I only tried a bite with the egg white and yolk, but I could tell the fiancé loved it (he also really loves eggs). -Tamarindo It was delicious tasting and not terribly tart. The only down side was there was no refills. I probably would have opted for a coke instead. Overall the dining experience was fine, it's great for families. It can be found in a strip mall, 1/2 block south of the 210 freeway at the Mountain offramp in Monrovia (Durate is one block north). Located between the huge parking lots for Home Depot and WalMart. Shredded meat or chicken fried along with the shell and then the cold lettuce is added, a splash of tomato sauce across the top and then grated Cotija covers the top.
