I really like this place, damn decent Mexican food at a damn decent price. I am especially fond of the special, 3 dishes, plus soup or salad for around $20, even though it's more than I can eat. If you are tired, as I am, of places like Kalaveras, where 3 street tacos cost you $20, then stop on by this nice little family restaurant for a good, inexpensive bite. Not just a taqueria and also not a fancy/overpriced modern Mexican restaurant. Just an old school Mexican sit down restaurant found on many LA street corners. Great portion sizes, good beans, free fresh chips, homemade salsas, chunky real guacamole. There's another popular Mexican spot nearby which is also good, but I think Casa Jimenez has better salsa and more traditional flavors/dishes, so it really just depends on what you're in the mood for. I usually don't like to leave a review unless I can leave a good review, but there are plenty of better options for Mexican Food in Duarte than this place. The food was mediocre at best. I had a combination plate with a chimichanga, chile relleno, and a taco. All were bland. The chicken in the chimichanga tasted like it was going bad. The service was slow and it seemed like since we weren't drinking alcohol, they were not motivated to provide good service. The chips and salsas were Delicious I ordered a pozole to baby a hangover It was delicious and full of flavor. I also ordered a Mexican coke. TOTALLY HIT THE SPOT! My husband ordered chilaquiles verdes with carnitas. He did like his food too much but o did not try it. He said the verde sauce wasn't good and very bland. The carnitas were not great but they were ok. The bill was about $46 which is a little steep for me. But the service was stellar. I've been coming to this place for over ten years, happy to see it's still kickin. They come with unlimited refills on chips so load up on that! We got the molcajete and two tamales to share for two people. Molcajete - I would totally recommend this. A lot of other customers get the same thing and it gets served in a cool stone pot. It pretty much has everything you would really want including cactus, chorizo, beef, chicken, cheese, salsa, rice, beans and tortilla. It's literally the whole Shabang! All the meat was tender and easy to cut. There is a single version and a sharable version but the single version is easily sharable for multiple people. (10/10) Tamales ala carte - wow this one is real value. It comes with the add on sections for like 2.60 each and comes drenched with sauce. Gotta love tamales! I do not recommend dining here at Casa Jimenez. This is an honest review. We wanted to try a New Mexican restaurant and wanted to give Casa Jimenez a chance in Monrovia, and this is how it went. Environment of restaurant, very blah nothing special and very old. Smelled like strong cleaning supplies mixed with fish. Also, not very attractive seeing a purple light above the kitchen flap doors to catch the insects. Also, all the dirty dishes and glasses go in plastic bins so customers can see when dining. Menu, way too large and very expensive. We ordered two combination plates with two cups of albondigas and 1 soda and 1 beer for a total of $57.00! That's totally fine if the food was worth it. But it LACKED! If you like albondigas be prepared to be disappointed! Clear broth albondigas never ever had that, it's usually red or light red broth. The vegetables were so over done/soggy. Meatballs were gross and tiny. It was gross I gave it away to be taken away. Chicken taco I like the fact it was white meat, but ZERO flavor! Flavor Lacked in beans and rice as well. will never return, it's gross and the whole place needs a major renovation. Also, I was staring at the cook eat his food full of sweat. Overall terrible experience, will never return or recommend this for anyone, it's not even worth $5.00 bucks. The only thing that was decent was the chips n salsa. Sorry 1 out of 10. Probably our favorite little Mexican joint around. If you come for lunch I think you can get a pretty good deal all of the dinner prices can be a touch on the steep side. The chips and salsa are excellent and they keep on coming with hot fresh chips. I think that their Michelada's are very good as well because the mix they use is good as well as the salt and spice on the rim. They have big frothy cold mugs for those as well. My friend has tried a couple of other drinks to no avail but that's her own fault. You don't really go to a small Mexican joint to get fancy drinks I took a star off because their guacamole is just okay not great and I do feel like on my heat as there could be a little bit more meat My kids usually get quesadillas or shrimp and both of been fine tasting. I have had the sincere happiness to visit Casa Jimenez in Monrovia several times. CJ has become my favorite Mexican restaurant and has displaced the terrific Guelaguetza in LA as my favorite. CJ has a very broad menu. I have thoroughly enjoyed everything that I have tried there. My favorites so far are the (soon to be) world famous Jimenez Special (#23) that features carne asada (charbroiled beef) with grilled onions, beans, grilled pepper, guacamole, and rice with tortillas. Juicy, nicely seasoned, and delicious! Their Burrito De Carne Deshebrada (#56) is a delicious shredded beef burrito. There are numerous seafood, chicken and pork dishes too which I look forward to trying soon. CJ provides free chips and 2 different salsas. One salsa is mildly spicy and the other is spicy. Both salsas are fresh and delicious to enhance the main dish as well as with the chips. Their coffee is very good and always brewed freshly. Ivan is the very friendly, courteous and attentive gentleman waiter who always provides excellent service. I called to get the issues resolved and the manager said that I had to bring the items back. It was late, I was 30 mins away and I asked if I could take a picture and bring it in tomorrow. I have been to Casa Jimenez a few times in the past few months, it is literally right next to my office. CJ offers some of the most genuine and authentic Mexican foods that you can't find from Taco Bell. My fav dishes among their menu are Enchiladas, Tacos, Tamales and Taquitos. You can't go wrong with beef, chicken or cheese, they all taste very yummy~ Their complimentary chips and salsas are also very delish, they can be very addictive though, I could eat them all day long! The servers were very generous, they were kind enough to refill my chips and salsas.
