Well I was torn between a very close by popular vegan bakery in my area and casa de vegan. Even though CDV was much farther i have absolutely no regrets. I love to support small businesses, and they have gained a future client! First of all let me say i have hyper anxiety about driving to people's personal residence, it's awkward at times, you don't know how safe the neighborhood is, or if that person is at all professional. She exceeded all my expectations and was very sweet, responsive, and accommodating. My son has pretty moderate allergies to dairy/eggs/nuts and its always a struggle to find places that accommodate his dietary needs. I wish I could give a small business a 5 star review. I placed an order for 6 tres leches cupcakes via instagram and sent my $15 deposit. Once I was given the pickup address, I realized they operate from home which I was fine with but I had no idea I would be picking up from a gated community that requires a gate code. Heads up would have been nice. I circulated the community trying to find an entrance and stumbled onto a gate every single time. Yes, I should have messaged the seller after stumbling onto the first gate. I was given the access code once I messaged the owner. I told the seller I would pick up around 2pm the day I placed my order. I was outside the house at 2:08pm. Word of advice, give an earlier time to ensure your order is ready on time, especially during a holiday weekend and if you're on a time crunch. When I got there, she said she was behind on decorating and would be out in a few. She said she put me down for a cake "for some reason" instead of the cupcakes. Like how???? But whatever, I said it was ok and she said she would charge me $40 instead of the $50 because it was her mistake. I waited for more than 15 mins until she came out. I'll cut her some slack because we are in the middle of a pandemic and because of the 4th of July weekend. This is why I suggest you ask for an earlier time to ensure it's ready when you get there. At this point, I just wanted my cake (instead of cupcakes). I got home and cut into a FUNFETTI cake. Why did I assume it would be tres leches???? Did I just pay $40 for a cake flavor I'm not even crazy about? Would 6 cupcakes have been cheaper? What if my cupcakes were birthday cupcakes for someone who loves tres leches and I show up with FUNFETTI? My step-mom and sister ordered from this business to surprise me for my birthday. They placed an order for a 6" chocolate cake and requested that it said "happy birthday" which came out to $45. It was honestly really sweet of them when they got it because they are not vegan (and I am) so i was touched that they made the effort to seek out a vegan bakery! I wished they would have asked me where to go though (beehive bakery girl would be my first choice since it's also GF) because I was kind of embarrassed that this business disappointed us and that from this experience they will turn away vegan businesses for being expensive or tacky. Lemme tell you! They were so disappointed because on the Casa De Vegan IG page they display these beautiful cakes but the cake they purchased was sooo small and plain, especially for the price, we all had baby slices. And the cake itself had a rich taste but was much too sweet and dry. I wish we had taken a picture! The funniest part was the happy birthday 'banner' that the cake came with. It was literally a piece of printer paper cut into a strip that had a generic cursive font in all caps that said "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" just stuck on top of the cake hahaha I hope that the mistake was on our part in the way that my sister (keep in mind she's 15 and my stepmom doesn't know how to use IG) ordered it because I think we should keep supporting local vegan businesses but I also suggest that the owner communicates better so that expectations are met. read more
