This has been one of my all time favorite tex-mex restaurants for several years now. I enjoy eating the beef enchiladas with a sweet tea.

I'm not sure... mixed review. The service was good and our waitress was really sweet but the food was just ok. Salsa is watery and bland. Chips need more salt. We ordered the chimichangas and they were awful. The chicken and steak tasted funny, very strange. But the Flauntas and quesadillas were pretty good. The alcoholic drinks were ok. read more

Even though we have lived in Waco almost 25 years, tonight was our first time trying this family owned restaurant. We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door and sat immediately. Our waitress (Abby) was friendly and very accommodating. I had a chicken and beef fajita and it was SIZZLING! the flavor of our food was great. My husband had the chicken enchiladas and he was pleased with his meal as well. We will definitely be back. Great 1st time experience, will not be our last. read more

Went here for a lunch for work. It was my first time so I am not sure of the name of the plate I got. One thing for sure I recommend the lunch portion. I ordered off of the regular menu and was embarrassed a bit because it was a big portion. The supervisor ordered queso for the table and it was good. I got a chalupa a taco several enchiladas and rice and beans. Everything was good and I took half back to work. The service was excellent and I will return. It was a nice place. Very busy which IMO is also a good sign. Plan on hopefully returning soon. It was very good. I would give five stars but don't typically do that the first visit. read more

Unpretentious, old-school restaurant with a retro look and menu. That may not sound good to you, but this is like the places that I used to go to back in the 80s and it suits me fine. The food is good, with decent-sized portions, and the only complaint is that it's a little salty for me. The staff is great and I do recommend trying them out...I'm going back. read more

I am giving Casa De Castillo 3/5 stars because I could get the same Mexican food in Minnesota where I am from. It wasn't bad, just didn't have anything special to it. If the food wasn't good, which it was, we would still have to give it 5 stars due to the waitstaff, management, calm atmosphere and cleanliness of restaurant and bathrooms, and quantity of portions. You can tell this is family run, hands on here. When you have that your staff is family as well and everyone cares about the business / customer. Now for the food. The crevice was fresh and filled with shrimp in EVERY bite which normally is not the case. The Spanish pasta, yes you heard me right was flavorful and thoroughly enjoyed by my son. And we had the trip or enchiladas, beef, cheese and chicken. All very good. Only thing I was not a huge fan of was the salsa was a little too juicy for me, I prefer it all to be more chunky, but that is just me. I certainly didn't let that stop me from consuming my share or more!!!! The service, not sure where to begin. Let me just say we never asked for anything including refills. She anticipated our every need and was very informative with the menu. Management came by and introduced herself as well as greeted / welcomed us upon arrival and again at departure. Do NOT use the photos on Yelp to decide to go here or not. They are from 2018 or earlier, if that tells you anything. First time to visit the place and will not visit again. If this was a good place to go before, it has past its prime. Probably more of a locals joint, but the clientele is the 60+ crowd. Maybe they were there for happy hour or a blue plate special, because they were taking plenty of shots and alcohol was flowing. Our salsa seemed like it was from the bottom of the Pace picante container, mostly water, and very little tomatoes/onions/spices. I had the Casa Sampler and the food was meh. It tasted and looked more like food I would eat after a night of drinking. Food was served to us from a TV rolling table cart. What was most disappointing was our food was brought out at the same time as other people's drinks. And the drinks were served first to the other table, not the food so we could get it hot. The waitress was attentive, so maybe that is the only saving grace for this place. read more

It wasn't as good as normal. I ordered chicken fajitas and they were tough and had a burnt taste to them, the grilled onions were not fully cooked and the beans tasted like a can of pinto beans. The queso on the other hand was good. This is the first time the food was not great. The waitress and trainee I had was really nice. read more

I absolutely LOVE this restaurant!! I came here with my boyfriend's family, who are regulars, and we had a blast! The food is extremely delicious! Mary Lou is the owner of this restaurant and she was just amazing to us! She was extremely accommodating and helped us out with everything we needed! We ate at the dining area for lunch, but eventually migrated to the bar area where we hung out with M.L.! It was super fun talking and enjoying each other's company. I definitely recommend stopping by here for a great meal and drinks! The top shelf margaritas are awesome!!! read more

This review should serve accurately, regardless of COVID-19 conditions: Pulling up to the restaurant, I could tell it was going to be an experience I'd never forget...Little could I suspect that in addition to leaving with heartburn, I bear the mental scars that harken to all the signs and symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress. In order of appearance: 1. Atmosphere: looks decent, but plays music I'll suited for a Mexican restaurant. 2. Service: slow, but at least courteous and friendly. 3. Appetizers: the chips were old and unseasoned and had definitely spend a long time under a heat lamp. The salsa was definitely sub par, was very vinegary and had an unpleasant consistency. This was exacerbated by the "chili con queso" which in both flavor and consistency significantly underperformed homemade queso made of velveeta and rotel. This relative disappointment served as only the foundation for the the greatest atrocity ever committed by a "Mexican Restaurant". 4. The dinner: my spouse, so disappointed up to this moment decided against ordering an entree. I, however, was determined to try and give this place a fair shake. *as a general rule, I judge Mexican restaurants based on their Carne Asada. That being said, I ordered the Carne Asada and was greeted to the most horrific plate of "food" I have ever had the displeasure of tasting. The Asada was the consistency of a significantly overcooked Salisbury steak and that's saying something since it was ordered as "medium" (I prefer medium rare, but since they had started on such a bad foot, I tried to play it safe). This was smothered in a bell pepper and tomato concoction that could barely hydrate the "meat" to a level just above Jack Links beef jerky. Add to this pitiful display, the rice mash (I suppose it was supposed to be rice, but it was so overcooked and under seasoned It could have passed for playdough) matched by a perfectly abysmal refried bean sauce that had some of the lovely queso from earlier incorporated into its pathetic existence. Long story short: I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to a stray dog, let alone someone who would be expected to pay for an experience as terrible as mine. I'd be willing to wager that the shady income tax and title work shop down the block could easily best this establishment in any culinary endeavors. Not to mention, the mini tacos my spouse picked up from the seven-eleven across from our hotel trounced whatever abomination could crawl forth from the hellpit of a kitchen in the bowels of "Case de Castillo". read more

This is a friendly, family oriented restaurant, with deep roots in the Waco dining experience. Once you become a "regular", they greet you by name & ask about your family! The food is not extraordinary, but basic Tex-Mex food. At our most recent visit, my spouse & I agreed, the salsa seemed watered down, not too tasty. The queso was somewhat textured, or "grainy", not smooth, like we prefer it to be, with a so-so flavor. The guacamole was delicious, as were our enchilada & taco meals. We would like to see a remodel or freshening up of the interior. It just seems old & not all that welcoming upon entering the restaurant. Will we return, by all means, yes! read more

This place is literally so catfish. For it being one of the best in Waco? I think not. It was like a hole in the wall.... but not a nice wall at all. They claim it's not Mexican food, and it's Tex Mex but seriously i can't believe they'd do Tex-Mex like that i ordered the Carne Asada steak and it literally tasted like OLD boiled meat with weird boiled tomatoes on top. It was DISGUSTING. No flavoring or anything whatsoever. The waitress was sweet in returning it and getting me something different. I got enchiladas and they were alright. Nothing special. Here's the best part of the night. The owner came out and asked me in the rudest tone why i returned the steak and i answered him POLITELY stating that it tasted like boiled old meat & i simply didn't like it. I have had better Mexican food at home. My sons nacho meat tasted like it had been seasoned with old El Paso seasoning. My carne asada had absolutely no seasoning, my rice tasted like rice a roni with cilantro. The queso tasted like canned nacho cheese with hormel chili sauce. Stay away!! read more

Have always been treated as if was eating at a friends house or families place, but the "ROOF FELL IN" tonight. My family and I had finished our and had paid, and just talking. This "woman" comes to our table demanding to know who used their credit card to pay for their ticketing. This was not a tone of voice of "excuse me for interruption" but a full on assault on the table. She not introduce herself. As far a we know she was another waitstaff. I asker who she was to ask for the credit ad finally she explain was the "owener"! asker is the way she talks to all customers. We short staffed and I don't have time this..... Turned and left thr area very professional. Several minutes later, tried to speak but come up from. I then her brother, the other and asked he would ask his to meet both us, He left and returned and stated she would meet and would first. I this long, and this isn't first time our families have eaten there. It wasn't SRO, super busy. If you're having bad don't take out on the people pay your pay. There maybe employee shortage, if this how treat the long time customers, wonder how the treat staff. By the $130.00 every other week is much, we'll see. read more

Do not understand the reviews on this place at all. The food was so blah! We had a table of 6 people and the only plate that was decent was the quesadillas. Everything else was flavorless, the salsa was sweet, almost like ketchup. The tortilla soup was creamy and lacked flavor. Tamales were dry. The fajita grilled chicken was so dry and rubbery that it tasted like pre-cooked frozen meat. The service was OK, sat for awhile when we got there, never came by after our food arrived. I liked the red salsa very much. I hear the green is hotter. The chips were very warm which i love. Tip-every mex place should have the chips hot, not lukewarm or room temp. Entree plate was very hot and all mex places need this too. Rice and refried beans were good but not great. Small children in the bar area which is very small- not cool by me. Bar is very little and the outdoor deck allows smokers im pretty sure. Very nice employees all around. They have hard tacos too but be sure to ask for it if you like them that way. read more
