We went there two nights in a row. The first night there were 13 of us. The second night, 21. We had a great time both nights. Management was very accommodating. We had indoor reservations and moved them outside to the patio just 5 hours before our dinner, as we had enjoyed the patio the prior evening. But then the wind kicked up something awful and we had to ask to be moved back indoors as we arrived. Yet they were happy to make that happen. All the staff were very friendly and attentive. The food tends to be milder here (nothing too spicy for Waco, lol) but everything was well prepared with quality ingredients. The cocktails were also very nice. I definitely enjoyed my jalapeño margarita. It's a large venue. The porch holds about 24 people. The back room holds about 30. And the main room is even larger. It's a multi-page menu with many options. Everyone in our party was happy with their selection. And I would totally come here again. read more

We walked in and we were greeted with a smile! We asked for a booth and they took us to a booth in the back - since it was just my husband and I we were grateful due to a huge Mexican family having so much fun in the front (I wish I knew what they were doing - they were using hand signals and naming them). Another time! So in other words, very family friendly as well. The music was a little loud for me (ear issues), but it was wasn't terrible. I enjoyed it louder - because it's authentic. The last time I heard authentic Mexican music was in Fort Worth at a little hole in the wall place which was excellent! Came in as a party of four and got seated immediately. The host staff could've been a little friendlier, but atleast our server was friendly. She gave us paper menus even though the prices were *not* the same as the digital menus. She did a phenomenal job with keeping our drinks refilled and not going even half empty (we had been outside all day by the time we came in and were so thirsty), and made sure we were taken care of the entire time. Was one of the best waitresses we've had at any restaurant. I believe her name was Demaris (sorry if that's spelt wrong!) We ordered the sopes, DF chicken enchiladas, ground beef enchiladas, and the Puntas a La Mexicana. We also got queso as an appetizer, with the chips and salsa and beans. All of it was absolutely amazing! The tomatillo sauce on the enchiladas was so good, wish I could've had an entire gallon of that sauce. The sopes were delicious, the carnitas were tender and had great flavor. The ground beef enchiladas were good, beef had good flavor to it, and the sauce was good too. Nothing had any complaints, everything was delicious, all the meats were cooked perfectly. It's a very simple, nice looking inside. The bar area is very nice, with a great selection of alcohol. This is our second time to this restaurant and the young lady with the long dark hair and bubble braids waited on us last time and this time. She asked us if we wanted an appetizer? I said "no thank you I just want the chips and the bean dip" that's part of the reason we like to go to the Mexican restaurant right? So then she took our order and brought the food and never brought the chips and the dip. And this happened last time too we had really bad service. Busy on a Monday night but the bar is nice and there's lots of places to sit outside. Servers were sweet and food was good. Their verde sauce is excellent! Wasn't a fan of the white rice but there's so much food, it was all for the better. I had a shaken Pina Colada (because they don't do blended ones) but it was fabulous. The staff was nice and the service was okay.(service was really good u til we ordered) The chips and salsa were complimentary. The salsa was very mild and didn't have much flavor; the bean dip has a sweetness to it, I'm guessing from the corn that is mixed in. The nacho chips were really good. The Birria tacos lacked flavor and needed seasoning. The accompanying consommé was very oily and didn't add much flavor. I love seafood, but the camerones tasted so fishy and inedible that I couldn't even finish it. The rice and vegetables had no seasoning and even salt and pepper couldn't fix it. I had a small bite of each of my plate and left it untouched after. We really should've complained but we were in a rush and didn't think of it until afterwards. I placed a to go order when staying across the street. Service was excellent both over the phone and in person. The style/prep of the food was a bit different from what I'm used to. I ordered my standard cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. On its own everything was a bit bland. They also put corn in everything so I had to pick it out. However, my order came with a generous serving of complimentary salsa, bean dip and chips. The salsa had a nice kick so I applied it to everything and gave the dish the heat it was lacking. Based on the service, generous portions and price, I would give them another shot. I'd still like to try their queso blanco!!! read more

Did the Brazos River Sunset tour and our tour guide suggested we try it. Let me tell you we were not disappointed. It was around 8:15-8:30 and it wasn't overly crowded but there were a good amount of people. The service was great - Maria had a smile and was very welcoming. She took great care of my family. The food was delicious. Big portions for the price. I highly recommend someone wanting some good Mexican food to give it a try. We loved that they had black beans and not pinto beans. The chips were fresh, our drinks were refilled without us having to ask. Definitely not disappointed by our food or the portions. The only thing that they were out of chocoflan and regular flan, but that just means they were both that good that they ran out for the day so my girls has fried ice cream which they devoured. Menu and QR code price differences. When we arrived, it took a little bit for us to be seated and then I had to ask for a menu. The food was average, but my friend was bothered by the fact that her poblano meat was not cut up and it was somewhat tough for her to cut. When we received our checks, mine was two dollars more than on the menu and hers was four dollars more than on the menu. We asked about that and the waitress pointed to the QR code at the backside of our table, which we hadn't even noticed as it was against the wall. I suggested that we should've been charged the menu price as nobody told us there was a difference between it and the QR code menu. That did not go over well. So, if you go there, be sure to check the prices on the QR code, even though it's harder to read than the regular menu. The waitress told us the menus were three years old. But what they failed to realize, is people my age often do not know what QR codes are or even how to use them. I do know how to use them, but did not know that I needed to to find out the prices as no one told us. read more

We stumbled across Hecho en Waco one Sunday morning when we were in town meeting friends. Seems like most of Waco is closed on Sundays, and when the top 3 places I had bookmarked on Yelp were all closed, we decided to simply walk around the Silo district to see what was there. And that's how we found H.E.W. H.E.W. is cute from the outside, has outdoor seating as well as ample indoor seating, and has parking. Their normal menu has all the usual Mexican and Tex Mex options, but the Sunday menu is primarily egg-based and more limited. The menu is online, so you need to scan a QR code on the table to determine what you want to eat and then you order from the waiters and waitresses moving around. On this visit, we had the chilaquiles cooked in salsa verde with eggs (lukewarm when served but tasty), the steak and eggs (steak was cooked perfect but all the food was lukewarm) and the breakfast plate with eggs, black beans and potatoes. None of it was plated with aesthetics in mind so we did not take photos. We also did not complain about the temperature of the food mostly because the restaurant was really busy and we were hungry. Service was as expected, restaurant was clean and busy, and we saw lots of large groups eating a variety of different dishes that all looked good.
