I don't usually write negative reviews, but I feel like people should know my experience with Carter Services in Torrance. First, I want to say the service techs, were excellent. They were friendly, professional, and clearly knew what they were doing. This review is NOT about them, they were honestly the best part of the whole experience. When I called to make the appointment, I was told it would be $159 to diagnose the dryer issue, and if I moved forward with repairs they'd apply $50 toward the work. I also mentioned my stove was having issues and was told it would be an extra $60 if I wanted them to look at it. I didn't commit to that at the time, just the dryer. The techs arrived, listened to the dryer, opened it up to confirm the issue, and gave me a repair quote that was basically the same price as buying a new dryer. So I declined the repair, which I think is a pretty normal decision. While they were there, I asked if they had time to look at the range. I mentioned to the techs that they quoted me over the phone an additional $60 to diagnose. They checked it out, explained what parts would be needed, and again the repair cost was close to the price of a new range, so I declined that repair too. Here's where the problem starts. When they totaled the bill, I was charged the $159 diagnostic fee for the dryer (which I expected), but then I was hit with an additional $149 labeled "Appliance Labor for Service & Repair," which they said covers troubleshooting and adjustments. On top of that, they charged ANOTHER $149 again for the range. So essentially, I paid close to $500 for them to look at my appliances, with zero repairs done. Huh? At no point on the phone or in person did anyone clearly disclose that I would be charged separate labor fees just to reassemble what they took apart. They had multiple opportunities to explain this before taking any action and didn't. That is very deceptive. I've used a handful of other appliance repair companies over the years, and not one nor anyone else I know, has ever been charged extra fees just for diagnosing or for putting an appliance back together after inspection. That's what made this stand out even more. I called the office and spoke with Katrina, but that didn't lead to any resolution. I'll be filing complaints with the CSLB, California Department of Consumer Affairs, and the BBB because this kind of billing practice isn't okay. Transparency matters, especially when people are already dealing with appliance issues and unexpected costs. Again, the techs themselves were great. But the pricing and lack of disclosure from the company is why I'm leaving this review. read more

Bait and switch, stay away. Called and got quoted $148. Double confirmed the price on the phone for replacing a valve already diagnosed - was confirmed $148 + parts. Billed $650+. While parts are heavily marked up charged an additional $400 in labor to replace 2 valves in less than 30 min. Won't go with them again and don't recommend them. I had to have my washer and dryer serviced today. Mario, the specialist technician did a wonderful job cleaning the dryer vent and the inside of the dryer. I was shocked to see the amount of dryer lint he was able to vacuum out. He explained each step he took and provided us with suggestions on how to prevent such an accumulation of lint. The washer was having issues with a blocked drain and soap residue, which he promptly fixed. He offered the suggestion of using cleaning vinegar, (available a Home Depot) in the machine once a month or so to prevent soap buildup. I highly recommend Mario as he offered valuable information and was professional and friendly. We joined the Carter's quarterly service plan which saves you a trip charge, 10% off the bill and priority scheduling. Overall a great value. read more

Our hot water heater stopped working so we called Carter Services. They immediately came out, diagnosed the problem, and explained our options. We decided to switch to a tankless water heater and were given a competitive price for both parts and labor. The technicians were professional, friendly, knowledgeable, punctual, and communicative. We are new to their services, but have had them come to the house several times already and we have since renewed the grand slam plan. Their services are reasonably priced, very timely, and they are thorough with their work. My grandma really appreciates that when she calls there is always a helpful person to answer all of her questions and to return her phone calls when she leaves a message. We greatly appreciate the electrical work that Hope and Carlos have done; we are also grateful to Marty for fixing our shower along with the other plumbing work he has done. I needed service for both my clothes washer and dryer. I remember seeing Carter Services' vehicles in my tract, so I decided to give them a try. Calling and getting a hold of a live person to set an appointment was easy. They followed up on the day of to confirm the time frame in which the technician would arrive. The technician arrived; he was clean and professional in appearance. He was knowledgeable; and he serviced my appliances quickly and efficiently. I really don't ask for much; I just want to work with an organization that can provide the basics consistently. (We can see if they go above and beyond, later.) When our refrigerator broke, Carter responded quickly. Isaac, the technician, was quick to diagnose the problem and ordered the part we needed. When it arrived, he installed it, and discovered that this was not the only problem. He realized what was wrong, and turned out to have the part we needed in his truck. I have been using Carter services for about 18 years. They have definitely improved their service over the years and have broadened the scope of their service. My tech today, for fixing the heat on my LG dryer, came with knowledge and familiarity with the machine and had already trouble shooter before arriving. It turned out he had correctly identified the issue, but not only did he do the repair, he cleaned the interior, after he'd shown me how lint etc had built up, potentially leading to fires. He also checked my vent to make sure there was no obstruction on the exterior of the house. Really satisfied with the service. read more

Depends on what is meant by our experience. When I called to ask if they serviced induction cook top stoves the personal said yes. She explained that their service charge was reduced by &50.00 if I accepted the service person's quote. I understood and was satisfied with the arrangement. However, when Winston said he could not fix the stove because he was unable to get the out dated part. I was still charged the total service fee without the $50 reduction. I paid the $159 total fee but felt they should have honored a reduced service fee since we DID accept his professional opinion and his work had he done it Merna (telephone secretary?) said she would ask for the supervisor to get in touch with us. I called your office for estimation and feasibility evaluation for installing a Moen water leak detector with automatic shutoff. He told me that an initial visit charge is $148. His estimate for installation is over $3000 including a device. I think that the rate of initial visit is pricy. The proposed installation fee is far above my budget. Floor heater thermostat repair. The first fellow said, after inspecting unit, the problem was thermocouple, not thermostat. he had to come back in two days with part.he came back and replaced the part, but then said it was the main valve. The company sent out different tech the a different day with the other new part. After two hours, 2 other techs show up. "They need to check firebox" for cracks". They found cracks and said they could not fix it and I was left with no heat and had paid $768 in advance. The first tech should have seen the firebox issue when he inspected the unit which would have avoided the trial and error process of an attempt to repair the unit. All this happened over a week, many delays, no shows and calls. oh, and I was not allowed to speak with one of the owners (Justin and Tim) Ultimately, there was another fellow, not owner, who tried to apologize. Called Carter's to fix the microwave in my microwace/oven combo unit. Why? Because they were the ONLY company that works on microwaves in the area that I could find. What a mistake. I had made the same mistake years ago and figured maybe they had gotten better, but NOT. Besides the $150 coming out charge, the tech put a glass of water in the unit and when it did not heat (as I told him it would not) he said that he would pull it out and diagnose it for $500 and then when he came back with the part it would be another $500 to install it and that did not include the parts. He left without even telling me what he thought was wrong with it (I already knew it was the Magnetron) So REALLY! I've heard it time and time before from neighbors that they are unreasonable and not that good, but what choice did I have. So, lesson learned agian. Don't call Carter's. read more
