So....this is a review of the winery and not so much the wines. The winery gets 4 stars and the wines get 2.5 but for a fun place to drink some adult juice, I'll be generous and round up to 4. I found the wines overall to be fairly blah but a couple were nice. The bottle prices are higher than I expected or, frankly, would pay. Nice 50% check-in deal on Yelp for tasting. Everyone raves about the wine club and it does seem to offer a lot of fun events. The staff is friendly and the tasting room is welcoming. It's a little tough to find (behind a couple of businesses on Cedros) but not all that difficult. I'll be back sometime if I'm shopping Cedros or going to the Belly Up. read more

This place is a great addition to Cedros and better location now that they've moved north. Wines, ambiance and entertainment are nice. Unfortunately, the manager on duty was awful. We saw her roll her eyes three different times at customers in front of us. We are locals and it was our first time. She was unfriendly, unhelpful, and didn't even try to tell us about their wine club?! Was defensive when we asked specific wine making questions. Carlotta with Carruth Cellars is wonderful to work with! I recently hosted a private wine tasting at a nearby resort, and Carlotta made the entire process so easy! She chose the wines, and even reviewed my menu choices to ensure they would go properly with the wines. While she wasnt able to be onsite, Haley another Sommelier hosted the tasting for us and she was amazing! We accidentally found this place Sunday after a long afternoon at the races. We were at culture brewery and didn't want to travel far to our next spot and someone suggested we try out this winery and boy are we glad we did! First off the ambiance is so cool! All of the wine barrels are so cute, it's definitely cozy but still has a level of casual sophistication. I really enjoyed it. We decided to do a flight for $10 not bad considering he must have tried every wine they had open and were were able to revisit many. Overall the wines were good, not the best I ever had but for a local spot and small production I enjoyed them. The Malbec was definitely may favorite. We had such a good time we decided to join the wine club. It's a pretty good deal, $35 a month and you get a bottle of wine, free tasting with a guest any time and invited to special events. I come in quite often and always enjoy it. The wines are good. Usually get around 7-8 tastings. Their Zin is my favorite, and the Barbera, Tempernillo, Petite Syrah, and Cabs are fantastic as well. Its been several years since I have been to Carruth's and what a pity. Located on South Cedros in Solana Beach in the Cedros Design District. One of my favorite North County streets. Be sure to park your car down below their driveway. The wine pourers and staff are superb. They give you their full attention and are comfortable with conversing about the blends, techniques of wine making, and location to where the grapes were grown. Carruth's is planning to expand their winery. I am looking more into this as we speak. They are philanthropic and have started Carruth's Corks4Cause dedicated to their friend and former assistant wine maker Mitchell Wix. He was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer at the young age of 27. A portion of the proceeds from 'The Unicorn Bordeaux Blend' will be going to financially help Mitchell. It is a great tasting bottle of wine. In their earlier production days they would have production parties where their friends and wine club members would help bottle their wines. Way to go Adam and staff! read more

We stopped at Carruth Cellars in Solana Beach for a little wine tasting and we were in for a pleasant surprise. I wish I remembered his name, the gentleman who helped us was knowledgeable and pleasant. He gave the 411 on the urban winery and showed us the wine press. We do get to visit several places for wine tasting and this one is fun! There was no others there at the time, we loved the wines he lined up for us, bought a couple of bottles then went for a stroll down the street. Oh quick tip, the cellar is behind another building up the driveway, it took us a min to figure it out, but it was fun to search for It turns out Cedros Street is their designer area and of all the beaches we checked out it was one of the best with interesting art, boutiques and furniture. I don't mind paying for over priced wine to support the community but when the owner shuts down a birthday party claiming we didn't spend enough money to be his clientele, it's time to speak up. Owner - you're rude and have a horrible business sense. You have an employee that creeped out the females and followed them around town to the very last late night nacho. I'm convinced he's your son. Stopped in for wine tasting while walking through the Cedros design district. The tasting room is dog friendly, so our dog was allowed in while I tasted. It seemed like there was a steady flow of customers for a Wednesday afternoon. There was only one gal working the tasting room (Heather) and she was able to manage all of us and remember who was tasting which wine at the time. At the same time, she was helping wine club members out and getting their wines. Service was great and the atmosphere was very laid back and friendly. We even got some extra pours from bottles that were open that aren't usually on the tasting. Heather was very friendly and knowledgeable of the wines. The grapes are taken from all over California and the wine is made in Solana Beach. I had just been to Napa and Sonoma the week prior, so for me, these wines weren't as good as what I had up there. I came here for a doggy fund raiser/wine night. I never even knew there was a winery in the middle of one of my favorite shopping districts. What a GREAT idea. Who doesn't want to unwind with a nice glass of Vino after a grueling (he he) day of shopping. The winery is very reminiscent of the winery tasting rooms in the Loire Valley of France. Quaint, warm and very welcoming. The staff is friendly and if you tell them what you like in a wine, they will give you a taste before you settle on a glass. They chose mine perfectly. I ended up with a lovely Merlot and my friend Anita ended up with a fruity Zin that she really enjoyed. The dogs had a blast too. There was plenty of room inside and out, and water bowls everywhere for their refreshment needs. I feel that the event was successful. I noticed cheese boards snaking their way past me a few times, but since we didn't have a table top and we had wine in one hand and dog leash and purse on the other, we did not order one. But since I plan on going back on a quieter evening I will update my review once I have tried one. read more

Alright so i came here for a all paid event so of course i had a awesome time with the wife. I will say i am not a wine drinker do to the taste usually of most wines but this place has an amazing merlot. Super tasty. The place is not super big which i thought was awesome cause it made pretty much everyone to interact with on another. They had a magician walking around that was actually really good all in all id say if u are new to the area or been here your whole life and have not tried this place as a wine drinker you should. This place is great! While this isn't my first go around at an urban winery, this one does seem to be a bit more experienced than the others I have been to. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We became wine club members on our second visit, and plan to make many weekend trips. I love how it's in the Cedros District and we can swing by while shopping and hanging out on the weekend. In addition to their tasting room, they have a small outdoor area where you can enjoy your wine, and a second room for private events. There was a winemakers tour going on while we were there, and we were lucky enough to steal a glass or two straight from the barrel! I'll definitely become a regular here. read more

We just had our wedding reception at Carruth on July 25th at their newer location on other end of Cedros. We were looking for a more laid back and casual setting and it was perfect. Tiffany was so helpful throughout the process. I knew I wouldn't have to worry about a thing that day and I didn't. She was able to set up any décor that we dropped off and it was beautiful when we got there. She also worked with our other vendors (food truck, DJ, floral) so we didn't have to. Everyone loved the wine selection and I got a lot of compliments on how pretty and inviting the space was. We are very pleased with our choice. read more

I am a big fan but not necessarily because of the wine but let's start with that because, y'know, it's a winery. Most of the wines are decent if unspectacular and certainly none of them are bad. But, with my limit knowledge of wines, i think only very few are truly memorable, mind blowing wines. I think their less common grapes like their Barbera and their Tempranillo are their most consistently delicious pours. However right now their 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles is really top notch. It's worth the trip just for a glass of that. For the white wines their Sauvignon Blanc is light, crisp and has the perfect amount of summer fruitiness. Okay now that I am done with the oenophile (read: wine snob) commentary, pinkies out, the truth is that I go there because it's a fun place to relax and have a glass of wine. I personally don't have the nose to distinguish between hints of chocolate or a sense of tobacco on the nose or whatever. I just like red wine and Carruth provides that in a friendly, relaxed setting. For me the membership provides value be a use I get a nice bottle of red wine every month, a solid discount on additional bottles, free wine tastings for me and a friend and, perhaps most importantly, an excuse to go out and be social in a nice place with cool people. read more

I've been here a few times to have wine with my good gal Pals. This is a cute little wine tasting room that has a lot of rustic charm. Parking can be challenging in this area but so far I've never had a problem. The service is very good and the wine servers are super friendly and courteous. Location: Across the street from the Culture Brewing Company. It is in the back and away from the street, which I love. It makes it a lot more quiet and makes it feel more remote. Atmosphere: Has a wine barrel sort of feel to it. It has a bar with only a few seats, but lots of tables if you want to stand and drink. I wish they did have more stools or chairs on the center floor to allow more people to sit. Service: 5/5 We were here so long that they changed shifts. Everyone here is so very nice and knowledgeable. We had the opportunity of meeting Wesley. We really appreciate the patience he had with us in our tasting and our inevitable decision to become wine members. He was super helpful and I would definitely recommend getting your wine recommendations from him. Food & Drinks: Wine tasting of 6 ~$15: 5/5 You get 6, 1 oz tastings of wines that you can pick from the menu. If you don't want to pick, they have some recommendations as well (we did both, so 2 tastings). We are wine novices and would recommend the tastings to anyone. Even if you are not familiar, you can definitely taste the difference. I will go over some of our favorites from this time. Definitely skip this one unless you have a lot of time. Wine was good, I would say, not terrific nor amazing. The hostess super preoccupied with everything else rather than her guests. She didn't explain to us the origin of the wine we were tasting. It looked like she had no idea what wines are included in the wine tasting menu. Carruth moved a couple doors down the street and Yelp started a brand-new review page for them. I'm moving my Summer 2015 review, as the wine is the same and the owner is the same: I, your humble Duke of Carruth Cellars, had refrained from posting a Yelp review for the 5 years I've been drinking Carruth wines. But at this time, a review is due. Your Duke had been a member of Carruth's Wine Club for about 4 of those years. Over those years, I've extended the courtesy to withhold a Yelp review for the simple reason that I didn't know how to word one: the fun social experience of the tastings and Carruth events offset the mediocrity of the wine, and I didn't want the business to suffer based on my honest opinion. Today, that fun environment went away. Owner Adam Carruth berated me on bringing in my 1y4mo Pit/Lab mix, the lovely Wee Baby Ava, saying she growled at someone, insisting it wasn't the first time, reminding me that he's the owner, and stating she's not welcome there. Recognize that everybody loves Ava: she's as friendly as they come. Granted she sometimes does bark and whine at other dogs, but it's a brief behavior I contain without incident. Plus she's never growled at a person or a dog. Ever. It would have been fine for Adam to quietly express his feelings to me politely and on the side, but his dicky attitude, insistence that He Is The Owner! and generally inhospitable arrogance led me to immediately cancel my wine club membership. Welll... in all fairness, I tried to do just that. In fact, I'm still trying*. I would have loved to cancel the recurring credit card charges, then and there, and have Adam process it himself, but that's simply not possible. Instead, unlike the immediate signing up on-site, cancellation has to be done by email, to wineclub@carruthcellars...., an email address that those of you who are in the latest rendition of the wine club, and getting charged for two bottles of wine a month, may want to note. There are some very friendly and top-notch staff working at Carruth -- Andy, Renee, and Josh in particular. However, when the owner behaves douchely, that combination of poor attitude + mediocre biting wines = me no longer financially propping up his enterprise. Speaking of which, there are plenty of other "urban wineries" around here serving middlin' wine. I'm out of reasons to continue to support this one. * UPDATE, 6/15/15: You may also want to note that I sent two emails requesting cancellation with no response. I stopped in here with a girlfriend after some shopping in the design district, and we were happy to find that we could do a $10 tasting of a handful of wines. There was a wide range to try, but we weren't able to choose which ones we wanted to taste - this was dictated by the winery. I believe we tried 3 whites and 4 reds overall, but it's difficult to say because we were there so long. I would have personally only tried the reds, because I'm not a drinker of whites. It's worth noting that while the staff was helpful, they were overworked and it took a long time between our tastings for someone to come over and pour another one for us. It was fine because we were chatting, but if we had a timeline at all, we would have had to bail on our tasting. The tasters themselves were fairly small as well, which added to the long waits between tastes. All of the wines we tried were good, but none of them were show stoppers for me. The atmosphere was nice, and it seems like if it had not been so busy, I might have enjoyed my visit a bit more. I may have to stop in again another time and hope for more attentive service. read more
