I usually go for the Zinfandel, but this time the Sauvignon Blanc ended up being my favorite--bright, crisp, and super refreshing. The Rosé, "Unicorn," Zinfandel, and Cabernet all brought their own solid character too, from light and fruity to rich and structured. We came to Carruth Cellars in Solana Beach for Sunset Trivia and left honestly shocked by how poorly the situation was handled from a customer service perspective. Our large group has attended Sunset Trivia for 6+ years across San Diego. We are exactly the kind of repeat customers businesses usually want to acquire during weekly events like trivia nights. This was our first time at Carruth Cellars. One member of our group arrived early and specifically asked about the menu. She was told the food menu was small and that most people bring in or order outside food. At no point did the brunette woman behind the counter mention restrictions on outside beverages or that purchases were expected in order to participate in trivia. Later, one friend's bottled soda needed a bottle opener, and when my husband politely asked the woman at the counter for help, she abruptly refused and informed him outside drinks were not allowed. Shortly after that, she came to our table and told us trivia was "for patrons only." The issue is not that the business wants customers to purchase something. That is completely understandable. The issue was the hostile, reactive way it was handled after we had already settled in -- especially when there were multiple opportunities earlier to simply communicate expectations politely and proactively. What felt especially shortsighted is that while many trivia attendees there may already be established wine club members, our group represented a completely different type of long-term customer opportunity. We are regular trivia goers who rotate between locations weekly, and businesses that create a welcoming atmosphere naturally earn repeat food and beverage purchases from us over time. Instead, rather than making new customers feel welcome and encouraging future spending organically, the interaction immediately made us feel scrutinized and unwelcome. Had the experience been warm and inviting instead of confrontational, there is a very good chance Carruth Cellars would have gained a recurring trivia group willing to spend money there week after week. One of our teammates later tried to respectfully explain that it was our first visit and that none of these expectations had been communicated upfront. The disgruntled employee responded that it was "implied" people should purchase something. Good hospitality does not rely on guests guessing unstated rules. We walked away feeling like the business was more focused on policing potential customers than creating an environment that actually encourages people to return and spend money voluntarily. The woman working on the evening of May 19th was not a positive representation of your winery, and if this is how guests are treated, it raises serious concerns about how new customers are being welcomed. read more

We had one of our small events here for our chapter alumni group, and the team that helped us was amazing. It was Tom and another girl. It was a casual meet up so we had some wine and appetizers. We didn't realize that this location didn't have a kitchen, but the person in the back helped us put a small charcuterie board together, which we definitely appreciated. The open space and laid-back vibes was a perfect spot for our event. I can't forget to mention that they had the best wine selection. read more

oh Carruth how i love you. thank you for giving me a place to be a regular at. weekly wine tasting friendly staff fabulous pizza pop ups fun acoustic jams trivia night (although I never officially play since i arrive after it's started). family & pup friendly here...MOST (not all) parents are pretty amazing at supervising their 2 & 4 legged kids. Hopefully that's consistent because it's nice having a family environment. my kids are grown so it's not for my benefit and I rarely bring my dogs. Love coming to Carruth on Wednesdays for their pizza and live music events. There are regular pizza vendors that are on rotation on Wednesdays and Fridays as well. The winery is very family and pet friendly. There is no kitchen so customers are welcome to bring their own food or order at the pop up tents. Bottle of the week if normally only offered during HH which is from 4-6 only from M-Thur and its pretty good deal compared to the rest of the bottle prices on the menu. read more

Super cute indoor and outdoor space for wine. I went with my friends on a Wednesday night and the live music was so good! There was also a pizza vendor which was delicious and quick. You can check the website to see if there will be a food vendor. The wine selection was expansive and quick service. I got a glass for $18. I do wish they had a sweet white wine (moscato or Riesling) or prosecco on the menu. I got the rosé and would get this again if I were back. read more

What a way to end a perfect hike in Solana Beach, sitting outside, sipping our flights of wine and enjoying our prepackaged charcuterie at Carruth Cellars. We were a party of 4 on a Monday. We arrived right at 1:00 PM when they opened. The winery is fairly big, it has indoor and patio seating. The young lady that was manning the counters and the pours was very helpful and very nice. We each ordered the $25 "Let it Flow" wine flights, plus a few prepackaged meats, cheeses, nuts and a baguette. We were able to sit and relax for as long as we wanted. The timing and day was perfect, not busy at all. I would definitely be back when in the area. Atmosphere: a relaxing vibe with both indoor and patio seating. Service: excellent. If you would like to visit an urban winery, this is the place to go. They have a good selection of primarily red wines, but there are a few other options for white and sparkles. There is outdoor seating and inside the winery are huge barrels and a very large concrete area that could be set up with chairs or tables for an event. There is no food service, but there are nearby restaurants. Parking is a little tricky, especially over the weekend. read more

Carruth is an 'urban winery'. They source their grapes from all over California and make the wine in San Diego. They make a few whites and a large selection of red wines. The wines are also grouped into a number of interesting 'flights'. I visited the Solana Beach location on Cedros Ave. Served from a bar with indoor and outdoor seating section the outdoor section looks inviting for a sunny day, but I love the smell of wine barrels, and we sat indoors. The wines were quite good! Had two reds, a GSM and a pinot noir. read more

This is my go-to place for live music and wine. They have multiple locations so I decided to meet my friend who lives in North County at the Solana Beach location. They don't have a lot of food at the location but there's plenty of restaurants surrounding it, so just be prepared if you're looking for drinks and food here. Every Wednesday they have live music, which creates such an intimate and vibrant ambience. I ordered the let it flow flight and my friend got a glass of one of there new wines, tattoo wine. From service to entertainment to Ambiance this place has a special place in my heart. Just an fyi, there's also plenty of parking around the corner, limited parking right in front. read more

What a nice spot! This place is a lot bigger inside than I expected. It's got good long tables for seating larger groups and high ceilings. The staff is incredibly friendly. There was a brunette woman working the bar who was extremely rude and just didn't know how to handle speaking with us. There's ways to speak to people. We have been visiting Carruth a number of times both during regular business hours and also for private events. They are located in the beautiful Cedros District which is just a short walk from the beach. Their wine is great and service is wonderful and efficient. There is no food onsite other than some charcuterie options but they allow you to bring your own food in. Plus they also have the occasional food truck and pizza Wednesday (my favorite!). They also have music on certain nights. Kids and dogs are allowed. read more

Hidden gem! We came in on a Friday evening and had a lovely evening. Carruth is tucked away on Cedros so it's a little hidden. There is street parking nearby. Finally something other than a brewery! Wow - how can I say this... their signature Cab is a 10/10. While I did NOT realize it was SO pricey for a glass when I tasted a sample, I can honestly say "no regrets" for treating myself to this amazing wine! Also plenty of other more average priced wines on their menu that were also great. Bread, cheese, and other nibbles available - though our cheese came vacuumed sealed it did end up sticking together like a giant chunk - not the most glamorous look to try and break it apart with your fingernails. It's a cute urban winery with great service I just didn't love the wine and it was pretty pricey. They have indoor and outdoor seating options and all orders have to include food but they have a good spread of food options that aren't too pricey. I decided to do a tasting since I had never tried the wines before. We got both of the standard tastings ($20 for 5). The first one had white, rose and reds. The second one only had reds. On Thursdays they also have a special reserve tasting ($35 for 5). We also got the potters crackers and fig jam. I usually love reds and unfortunately I didn't love any of the ones here. They all seemed a little too light in flavor and/or a little tart and dry. Also the tasting pours are tiny. I think all five tastings combined barely make a glass. I saw some other tables around me get glasses of wine and they seemed like very good pours so I'd probably do by the glass if I came back. read more

Had and excellent experience here during a late weekday afternoon. The service was great and the wines were fine. We didn't like every wine we tried but there were several we really enjoyed. We ended up purchasing six bottles of wine from here to take home and drank one on premise. The wine maker has a variety of wines which someone should be able to find at least a couple they really like.
