This venue is more of a tavern that serves wine, a little rough around the edges. Kids serving don't know anything about the wine and are drinking it too! One was very buzzed by end of evening. I've been to a lot of classy establishments and this is not one of them. The wine itself is higher in alcohol than typical and tastes like sugar was added (yes this actually happens with some wine). Again, I'm a savvy wine drinker, I recommend skipping this place and going to Soltera or any nice restaurant for good wine and real food (Carruth only has prepacked snacks). read more

Carruth is an absolutely amazing place to have wine and hang out. My husband and I have been members for over a year now, and visiting longer than that, and love all the locations and staff, but Solana Beach in particular. The wine is always fantastic, so many great reds on rotation. Rob is awesome, so friendly and knowledgeable. There are live music nights and food truck nights. Truly something for everyone. There are actually two Yelp listings for this business so I suppose I'll post a second five star review as it is that worthy. I've had the pleasure of being a member at this winery for several years. Things have changed a bit since here Covid and in my opinion they've actually improved. What was once a parking lot it's now a cool seating area with lots of greenery. It was once necessary to stand and now there are many seating areas. My highest recommendations are the BDX and the Unicorn. The vegan cheese dip with French bread works nicely with this. As always the staff here is wonderful it's still dog friendly. Wine, cheese and doggers - some of the best parts of life and they're right here! read more

Fun atmosphere on Cedros Ave. Abby was so helpful in recommending wines. My husband chose the Kings Blend and I the Claret. The Kings Blend had dark fruit on the nose, notes of dark cherry and cocoa on the mid-palate and a long,lightly tannic finish. The Claret had a more refined,albeit similar nose, a pleasantly fruit forward mid-palate and soft finish. Relaxed listening to jazz and sipping wine surrounded by barrels of wine. We had just finished a spectacular dinner of grilled fish tacos and decided to head to my happy place, Carruth Cellars. Our hostess poured us a delicious Cabernet, which had notes of boysenberry and chocolate. We enjoyed ourselves immensely on the outdoor patio. All in all, a wonderful experience. read more

This is an excellent urban winery. My wife and I are members and mostly go to the Solana Beach location - which doesn't have the same ambiance and facilities as their other locations, but I'd still give it top marks for the good wine, great staff, and laid back atmosphere. The often have food trucks, and live music (but not always - check ahead), and occasionally other events (comedy, painting classes, etc.). read more

While my boyfriend's mom was in town, we decided to visit Carruth for a wine tasting. We walked in to find an empty room on a Friday afternoon but were soon joined by a couple of other groups. They offer a choice of an all red or mixed red and white tasting of six wines but they offered to double up on the whites for me as I'm not a big fan of reds. I may only have been able to try three wines but they were all so good that I was more than happy to have a second round. It was hard to pick a favorite between the chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and pinot noir rose but I slightly favored the rose and sauvignon blanc as they were a bit lighter. My boyfriend really liked the pinot noir. Our only issue with the wine bar is the lack of seating. There is not a single seat to be found. We all commented on how it would be nice to sit back and enjoy our wine. We even thought we would have ordered a glass of our favorite after the wine tasting but we were tired of standing. read more

Decided to do beach day and grab some wine while we were in Solana on an abnormally hot day in December. Man it was amazing! We actually bought a bottle of wine to take home with us too. Super cute and spacious winery. Keep in mind there is no AC however it was still nice and cool outside. We also decided to do 2 flights. My husband did a surprise me flight (they pick for u based on what you typically like) and I went with the red. Wine was really good! They use grapes from the best of the best in the area. It was for sure amazing and you do get what you pay for. Prices can be a bit steep but it is Solana Beach and how many wineries can you think of Solana? We had a 50% off coupon which was more then worth it which is why we decided to buy a bottle. We also got bread, cheese, and spread. Man that spread was amazing they also get all their food locally which is amazing. This place for sure wont' disappoint! read more

My fiance and I make a point to come to Carruth everytime we are in Solana Beach. We love them so much that I hosted a private wine tour with Carruth for my bachelorette party. Hayley and the team worked with me to make the tour exactly what I wanted. We were able to start in the Solana Beach tasting room and then drive along the coast to the Carlsbad tasting room. The wine was incredible, Hayley was so knowledgeable, and everyone had an amazing time! I could not recommend the wine tour more! read more

It's ladies night, oh what a night.. Prior to heading out to a Yelp all ladies event, a few of the girls joined up at Carruth Cellars to enjoy a glass of wine pre-event. It was a first for us, due to the new location along Cedros Avenue. The new winery location is what feels like an open warehouse and sits right across the street from Culture Brewing (one of my favorite local breweries)! I'm generally a red wine drinker, but on a hot spring (almost summer) evening, the Pinot Noir Rose' is what I chose and it was perfect choice. It was fresh and bright at $9 per glass. The environment was livened up by local flavor...Solana Beach info at the bar, sunflowers on the tables, and great conversations with fellow Yelpers! This is a great place to spend some time, prior to any outing in Solana Beach. Note that service is laid back and bit on the slow side. I found a Groupon deal for this winery where you can participate in their annual grape crushing! I've always wanted to stomp on grapes with my feet, but when I made the reservations (after several attempts), they told me that I will just be using my hands instead- boo!! We arrived about 20 minutes early, but were given a couple of tastings while we waited for our tour guide. This urban winery is very small, but they plan to move to a bigger place down the block very soon, which I believe is the same area where they produce their own wines. After trying the Sauvignon Blanc, we walked over to the wine making facility and got a tour while learning about the creation of wine. All of their handcrafted wines are created onsite, using grapes from Northern and Central California. Then we got to crush grapes using this giant metal thing and tasted the unfermented wine afterwards. If you want to touch the grapes, you need to sterilize your hands first. I was told that crushing needs to be done several times a day. The wine that was scooped out from all that crushing we did was very sweet and tastes like juice! We were able to see how the bottled version tastes like to compare, but it was too dry for me. It was time to go back to the tasting room where we were offered a few more sips of our wine of choice. It was pretty fun learning more about wine, but too bad they don't have any sweet wines like Moscato or Riesling. The staff was friendly and very personable during my visit here. They also have a wine club and movie nights here on certain nights, which seems like a neat idea if you live in the area. read more

Carruth Cellars is a fun, casual winery located on South Cedros in beautiful Solana Beach! They produce a variety of wines, with reds being the emphasis. All are pretty good, with some a lot better than others. We recently visited Carruth Cellars on a slower Saturday evening at about 7:30. Carruth closes at 9:00, so there was plenty of time to try various tastings, all of which were provided by the friendly and knowledgeable staff as part of an Urban Winery Tasting Package we had purchased a month earlier at a Yelp Event in San Diego. This allows us to visit all 11 member wineries in San Diego County. Carruth was the first one for us. The first offering was a Sauvingion Blanc from Lake County. This was smooth and crisp, but not being a white wine fancier, I can't really pass judgement. My lovely companion Mel really liked it, however. Next came a nice Rosè, which was a zinfandel from Dry Creek Valley. This was very good, in my opinion. But then the reds - we were offered four different selections; a Cabernet Sauvignon from Dry Creek Valley, a Grenache from Paso Robles, a Tempranillo from Capay Valley, and a Barbera from the North Coast. I really liked the Barbera, and the Cab was also excellent, in my opinion. The others didn't work as well for me, but that is all about the taste buds, eh? I applaud Carruth Cellars for using exclusively northern California grapes and for producing some very nice wines. The winery experience was very casual, as I mentioned, which works well for me. Disappointing when you compare to the wonderful wines we have in California. Adam stopped me on the street and pitched his sale. Originally a brewer he started wine making as a hobby. He's pretty good at it. At least, that's what I thought. Ashley, a graduate of SLO poured a very crowded tasting room. She kept up but could have used another body to work the room. All wine made here with grapes from up North. Whites better than red which are too rich and fruity for me. Allot of jam. Too many blends. Four of us popped in from Santa Barbara. We are avid wine drinkers belonging to a variety of wine clubs with frequent trips into wine country for tastings and events. I'm sorry to say that Carruth is not close to the caliber of other small and larger wineries. The best wine in the wold is the one you like. The second best is the one that's cheap. These are neither but that said, I'm not you. Try Carruth Cellars, you may like it. I give Adam and his team a hand for trying because someone is buying. read more

After volunteering at the San Diego Country Fair with my friend, we were quite tired, sun-kissed and thirsty, so we decided to visit one of her favorite local wineries in Solana Beach - Carruth Cellars for a complimentary tasting flight before heading home. The winery was packed with laid back patrons kicking back on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, but despite the crowd, the "wine-istas" were helpful and quick to attend to all the guests. During our visit, my friend introduced me to Carruth's: - Rose of Grenache: sourced from Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County. Tastes of rose petals with fresh peaches and strawberries on the palate. - Unicorn Blend: Made with grapes sourced from North Coast. Red wine with more of a smoky and earthy flavor. My favorite was the subtle sweetness of the rose. We had a great time relaxing here at Carruth's, people watching and chatting away.It is also a dog-friendly business, so feel free to bring your furry friends! Definitely recommend for wine-lovers who are looking for a down-to-earth winery to hang out with friends. read more

This is by far my favorite carruth location. As a member I like to try to try the different locations and this is the best value for sure. Since it's covid, you have to order food with your wine, but this location doesn't give you a crazy food minimum. Carruth Cellars is such an incredible winery. From the staff, to the atmosphere to the delicious award winning wines. It is is the ultimate experience while walking down Cedros after a day of shopping. After our first visit we were hooked and immediately signed up for membership. As a member you get to take advantage of so many perks (free wine tasting, barrel tastings, private events, discounts, being a part of crush, etc.) I definitely recommend becoming a wine club member if you aren't one already!! Being local it is so nice to belong to a winery and to be able to wine taste any day of the week that we want. The best part is that you can always bring a guest. It is a great place to bring friends or guests visiting from out of town. Everyone is so friendly and we always have an amazing experience. If you are hungry you can always bring your own snacks or purchase some of their delicious cheese and bread options. One of our favorite things to do is to visit the Farmers Market on Sundays and bring our food (Red Oven Pizza) back to the winery to enjoy...there's nothing better than a glass of wine and the perfect pizza!! If you haven't been to Carruth yet you are really missing out. It is one of the best local wineries around.
