    Beef pot roast dinner special

Carol's is one of my favorite mom and pop restaurants. Love all the home cooked food. They are always very clean and put together. Our server was very nice and fast. We will be back. We also enjoy their chicken dinner special.

I had heard many great things about Carol's in Blaine and it didn't disappoint. It's a classic American restaurant known for its bakery and breakfast/ brunch. Walking in you see slices of fresh baked pies and bars, I loved it because they really looked housemade and not fancy elegant. Made me feel like I need to try everything. While I didn't get a chance to I'll be back for that. We were seated right away. There are plenty of tables and seating. The staff was quick and knew what they were doing. We had the buttermilk pancakes, came with butter, syrup and a fruit sauce. Those pancakes were delicious. Reminded me of the pancakes at the State Fair Hamline church breakfast. Also had a side of hashbrowns. I added cheddar and onions. There was an option for pepper jack as well. They were very good. Oily, flavorful and super cheesy! The Corn beef hash was very good as well. The orange juice came in a cute glass with an orange slice. It said fresh somewhere on the menu, but it wasn't that. The usual. Prices were low. Food was good. And looks like it attracts many families with senior citizens. There are even senior specials on the menu. It's a stand alone building with plenty of parking and an attached gift shop.

I've been to Carol's many times and if you are looking for great comfort food this is the place! The restaurant is kind of tucked away but easy enough to find. It's a nice sized restaurant with plenty of tables and booths but it gets BUSY! Thankfully they have a decent waiting area and offer plenty of seating while you wait (Thank you Carol's!!). There is also a gift shop attached which has some really lovely things and a fun thing to do while waiting for a table or after your mea. While waiting, also check out the dessert cases! You just don't see desserts like this very often and I would highly recommend leaving room for one (or taking something home)! The food is Diner comfort food and always tasty! I am addicted to their Turkey dinner and have had that the last 4 times I've been there, but have also been impressed with their breakfasts and LOVE their Signature salad!! The Turkey dinner comes with a salad or soup (you can upgrade to that Signature salad) and the meal has a pile of delicious turkey, homemade stuffing, real mashed potatoes, the most yummy Sweet potato casserole, and steamed veggies of some sort. All delicious!! My mom this time had the Pot Roast dinner which was a special that day and came with the same sides. The beef gravy on that was SO good and the meat was tender. Honestly everything is yummy! Make sure you try their Nova Scotia rolls! They are so good!!

UPDATE: My husband came with me this time and raved about the country fried chicken special. I had the same sammich because DANG it was good! I took home a slice of coconut cake that ended up in Bemidji with us. My sister-in-law, her hubby, and I all munched on it through the evening. Unbelievably moist with a delicate flavor that was decadent and rich.

The food at Carol's seems to primarily be comfort food with some alternative options thrown in to broaden the horizons. I got fish and chips and enjoyed it but I felt like I could've used more fish and less fries. The restaurant is homey, I enjoyed the stained glass Tiffany style lamp shades on the hanging lamps, and there was live music, an older man with a nice voice singing some classics. Service was quick and welcoming.

They all appear polished and professional. I ordered the Oliver Burger, the Shrimp and Cheesy Grits, the Spinach Artichoke Dip, and a Stuffed Nutella Cookie. The server recommended I warm the cookie slightly in the microwave and enjoy it with coffee. The food today: spinach artichoke dip is served with grilled bread.... this was delicious right off the bat when the bread is still hot and slightly crispy. However, after the bread sat in the container steaming, the experience wasn't as good. I would recommend thinner pieces of bread with a bit more char on them (like grill marks) and a couple more pieces of bread. I mean, 4 pieces of bread? C'mon man! An okay appetizer dish. Was it worth $15.99? Absolutely not. Shrimp and Cheesy Grits with creamed greens: shrimp were seasoned beautifully but unfortunately were overcooked and rubbery, and the creamed greens were not cooked nearly long enough, they were fibrous and hard to chew, so I was unable to eat them at all, so a waste altogether. The stars of this dish were the charred lemon (like the bread should have been;) ) and the cheesy grits. The grits were divine and I wish there was more of it on the dish and less of the nasty greens. Seriously, switch those ratios around and it would be better. Next , the Oliver Burger: decent, cooked medium, no notes really. The waitress was right about the cookie, it was very tasty with a little warm up and my coffee .

They are very busy and seem to be a local favorite. We had a party of 4, and had both breakfast and lunch food served at our table. The waitress was amazing. Very attentive and worked hard to be sure we felt seen throughout our visit - keeping drinks filled and checking in regularly to be sure we were satisfied. Based on the business of the restaurant, the food arrived within a reasonable time and was hot when it arrived. The quality of the food was meh. Nothing special. Portion sizes were large but lots of blah food is still blah. The hashbrowns were underdone and greasy. The chicken fried steak was a premade item and not something made onsite. The gravy was scant and extra needed to be requested. No mustard was on the burger or the table so it had to be requested. Toast was under toasted. Again, it was just blah. Not bad, not good, not memorable. The very best thing was the service. Again, the wait staff was amazing, It was the one thing that made us give them a second chance and should we try them again - is the only reason. You sit at a table and order off your phone, and servers will bring your food and drinks out to you. Had no problem with that, it was a fairly easy process. Our servers were kind and I believe we talked to the owner for a bit who was attentive to all the tables! The food is the disappointing piece. I had the chicken rojo avocado tacos and they really lacked flavor. There was plenty of chicken in such a small tortilla, which made the taco fall apart as you ate. My sister ordered the pesto Mac and cheese with chicken and it was okay, but the chicken was not good. I didn't try the tenderloin bowl, but it seemed to have better reviews than my meal or my sisters from my family. The restaurant was understaffed - the bartender was not only running the bar but also serving the entire dining area. We sat at the bar and waited about 10 minutes before being greeted. We also overheard a nearby table voice frustration about the slow service. We're pretty patient, so it wasn't the end of the world, but it was noticeably slow. That said, once we were helped, our server was friendly and attentive. I ordered a Spicy Margarita and my husband went with an Old Fashioned. My margarita was on the weaker side; not bad, just forgettable. My husband enjoyed his Old Fashioned. For food, we tried the Bang Bang Shrimp, Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps, and the Crab-Stuffed Portabella. The standout was definitely the Bang Bang Shrimp; we both really liked it. The lettuce wraps and stuffed mushroom were fine, just not dishes we'd return specifically for. The overall vibe was calm and low-key, and the staff was kind despite being stretched thin.
