I found that the biscuits and gravy weren't very good for me as they had a more gelatin consistency when I prefer a creamier consistency. Usually a great place for breakfast; I ALWAYS order the eggs Benedict...so good! However, both eggs last time I was there were hard-cooked all the way through; I'm surprised they were even sent from the kitchen. No worries, I'm not a complainer, and I ate them anyway. First time visit. I had seen some positive reviews and thought we would check it out on our way home from Woodbury. In my opinion is not the type of place you would recommend and would go out of your way to visit. Everything from service the ambience to quality the food was just slightly above average. If it existed in my neighborhood, I would probably make it a regular stop. But not worth extra effort to get there. read more

What a lovely spot tucked away in St Paul! I came with a friend who had heard about it from his circle, and it was such a great choice. They told me this place has been here for 27 years!! I can definitely see why. Service was super prompt and the staff is all so friendly. They gave great recommendations and I knew I had to try the Country Style Eggs Benedict. I'm a big eggs Benny girl and I love biscuits and gravy - this combined both of those iconic dishes! I said I was going to take a picture to share here, but I swear the second it hit the table I started eating right away because it looked so good (LOL). This place wasn't bad at all. You can tell it's a neighborhood/locals Cafe since they knew most of the people coming in. The only thing bad about that is that their regulars will get the better treatment in service then you will which doesn't seem right. Like they'll get, faster service, not rushed, and bill after they have finished vs you'll get yours after you just took a bite which I've noticed. Now on to my breakfast. It was tasty I'll tell ya. Portion was average , but my steak which i was surprised was cooked perfectly to my liking, which was medium rare. Most places I've been to tend to cook it a little longer than I like so that was nice. If I had a choice to come here or not again would only be if I was in the neighborhood. Finally got around to trying this place. A perfect little spot for breakfast (and the lunch menu looked good too!). I got eggs, sausage patties, American fries, and rye toast. My son got the pancakes with eggs and bacon. Split a pot of coffee. Everything was exactly what you'd look for in a little non-chain breakfast spot. Prices seemed fair, all the food was just right, service was friendly and fast, and though we got there at opening (7am) on a Saturday, it nearly filled up soon after. Lots of regulars. It's like a comfy slipper you forgot you had. I'd never been there, but it felt cozy and familiar right away. I've always drove past this place and always wondered about this cafe. I finally decided to try out today. As soon as you walk in, you see it has a homey feel and taste. Dated and uncomfortable tables and chairs; I did not like the seating. When we walked in, we weren't greeted by any one. I saw a bunch of waiters and waitress walking back and forth, no greeting. Then a waitress made a gesture that she will seat us... didn't really say much and gave us a menu. Service was okay. We waited 15 mins or so for our food after we placed our orders. I ordered the eggs Benedict with hash browns. First impressions, there was a LOT of hollandaise sauce compared to other restaurants I've tried. In addition, the color of the sauce just didn't look right to me. The Canadian bacon cut was thick, which was okay to me. Food definitely has a homey taste, nothing bad about that. Overall my experience wasn't great, I just wasn't impressed with the food and the experience. I don't think I'll return to this location. read more

Gross, unclean, and kind of overrated! I have only been to Shar'els Cafe one time, but I won't be coming back. First of all, the location is terrible. The place has an unappealing exterior, and a "strip mall" placement. The inside looks like any mediocre diner at first, but is rather unclean. The bathrooms weren't very clean and the carpet was kind of gross. Furnishings looked aged and outdated. The food itself wasn't very good. The menu had the basic options that every diner has. The eggs were really rubbery and the pancakes tasted gross in general. Some of the members of our group were happy with the food, some were not. In my opinion, this place isn't worth your time. read more

We had a great Sunday breakfast! Blueberry pancakes and a meat lovers omelette with pepper jack. A side of hash browns and cinnamon round toast to complete our breakfast spread. At first glance the food seemed somewhat no frills, but after the first bite into the cakes, fresh delicious blueberries burst in my mouth. The meat lovers omelette was filled with perfectly browned and crunchy bacon in bite sized pieces along with ham and mini sliced sausages. All browned to perfection. Yet another place I was expecting the waitress' name tag to say "Flo" on it. I've been stopping in for lunch quite a bit lately. Absolutely nothing fancy but downright tasty. Unassuming small strip mall location. Appears to have a lot of regulars judging by the waitress knowing most people by first name. The soups are homemade. The sandwiches are fresh off the griddle and always packed with flavor. It's a perfect lunch spot if you're in a hurry or want to sit and take your time. I'm usually in a hurry and can get my meal within minutes and be in and out in 15-20 minutes. Breakfast also served and appears to have a wonderful selection. I've never tried breakfast however. This place has been here for quite some time so they have to be doing something right. Went there while visiting family in the area. I had the Sharel's everything omelet. The service was fast. Food camellia quick and the omelet was huge. Some places will get you with large portions and terrible good; this was not the case here. Omelet was packed with tons of ingredients and was delicious. We planned to stop here for breakfast while bicycling from Minneapolis to Stillwater because Shar'els is only a few blocks off the Gateway Trail. What a wonderful place with friendly service on the patio! Our server, Samantha, could not have been nicer. Their fry cook prepared everything to perfection, from delicious American fried potatoes to the steamed ,then sautéed fresh broccoli. We will definitely visit again. read more

Shar'els is a place I was told I'd love, a place I had to go to, and I was finally taken there one rainy cold morning. Lets start with the location, shared lot with a a little street parking, but, the overflow lot for them and a pizza shop (Randy's I think?) should suffice. It's tiny in there, I mean tiny. Expect a wait during normal peak breakfast hours on weekends, as we did. It's loud, and you're gonna essentially share the meal/conversation with neighbors, so be warned. Service leaves quite a bit to be desired, but, one or two waitresses for this place while it's busy, it's hard to expect anything better. I opt for the Sauteed Skillet (meat, American fries, veggies, cheese and eggs together) and a side blueberry pancake. My dad ordered his usual breakfast sammy. Food comes quick, so that is nice. That's where things pretty much stop being nice. One egg comes out over hard'ish, and the other is over easy. Not sure how one manages this, but, see the picture and draw a diagram for me. Anyway, the next situation happens to be with some potats that are done perfectly, and some that are hard like they've barely been cooked. Again, I'm not sure how one manages this feat, but, they did (and I used to line cook). There was no real flavor to this dish, which really was a let down. Too little of sausage? No seasoning? No idea what. But, resorted to ketchup to give it something. Blue berry cake was good though, and really, the only saving grace to my meal. I hate having to rate a place that was so recommended so lowly, but, they left me no choice. read more

One day last week our newborn had a rough night. And when I say rough night, I mean Rough Night. My husband and I both woke up feeling hungover. And since it is universally known that hot, greasy food cures hangovers (including both the type caused by drinking more than is good for you and the type caused by small and needy, non-sleeping children) that is what we left the house in search of. We came here for no other reason than because it wasn't far from home and we'd driven past it a few times and were curious to try something new. Service was fast and friendly, the food was hot and reasonably priced and the cook actually knew how to make eggs over-medium which is always a bonus. Because we were there during the middle of the week, most of the crowd seemed to be made up of elderly regulars, no doubt drawn in by the cheap price of comfort food and the "up north" décor that was liberally sprinkled throughout the dining room. We stuck out, walking in with a baby in an infant carrier, but luckily the little one had worn himself out the night before and slept all through breakfast so we didn't disturb any of the natives. Probably not worth a special trip if you don't live in the area, but if you live nearby and are thinking about hitting up the nearby Denny's or Perkin's for breakfast, why not try Shar'els Café instead? They're only open for breakfast and lunch so don't wait too long. Oh, and they take credit cards which isn't always the case at small, local spots. read more

My hubby found this café thru Yelp, off the beaten path such that our local friend with who we had s meeting had some difficulty finding it. But it's quite popular with the retired folks. It has a little corner with sofas and stocked book shelves, giving a homey feel to match the home style dishes. Good food, especially the malted waffles loaded with fruits. Only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is that the whole place could use a thorough cleaning, including the restrooms. I've here so many tones and am finally writing a review. Although i live nearby i would readily travel across town to have breakfast here. It's honestly that good! The owners work hereand take great pride in using very fresh ingredients. The food has great flavor without being too salty or greasy, The portions are big, yet the price is right. The staff is well trained and most have been there for years. Friendly and out going, they do there best to get your day started out on the right foot. The atmosphere gives a real homey dirty of feeling. Rather than a big room with tables, they have sectioned off an area which resembles a den or library, the only complaint i have is that in the winter it's quite cold by the side door. Ok food. I ordered the Eggs Benedict. Hollandaise sauce on it lacked the lemon juice flavor that I crave in Hollandaise sauce, tasted more buttery but not lemony. The food was decent but when it comes to Benedict I am very picky about the Hollandaise sauce. Really its just a preference thing, not a knock on the restaurant. Some might prefer it the other way.
