In December of 2025, I finally faced the fact that it was time either to intervene in the slow-and-steady decline of my teeth, or throw in the towel and get dentures. Dr. Arash Khani listened closely to my story, taking into careful consideration all the issues and concerns I expressed, including my general aversion to dental work, my lack of confidence in myself to maintain healthy teeth and gums, and my budget--I do not have the luxury of dental insurance. He subsequently presented me with likely scenarios if I were to choose either to continue ignoring the problem or to give up and replace all my natural teeth. He contrasted those options with a detailed treatment plan that could restore my smile. Thank goodness I chose to put my trust in him and his recommendations! What initially drew me to this particular practice was its proximity to my home; it's located across Banks Street from Tymberline Shopping Center, three short blocks from my front door. But my happiness with the convenient location was quickly supplanted by my delight with the people who comprise the staff. It is they who have left the strongest impression, and I'd like to tell you a little about each of those who've worked with me. First, there's Joanna at the front desk. I can say without reservation I've never met a person who's more kind and caring, warm and friendly, skilled and knowledgeable. Each and every time I walk through the front door she puts me at ease, and it's clear I'm the most important person in the room. Whenever I have any question about the schedule, or my treatment plan, or my bill, she's immediately on top of the matter and either answers straightaway, or gets me the answer after consulting others in the practice. Joanna is a gem! Saylor is my Dental Hygienist. So far, only two of my visits have been with her, and--given the state of my gums--she's had her work cut out for her! This has resulted in my having had less personal interaction with her compared to the others, but nonetheless it's clear she's exceptionally good at her job and as pleasant company as possible when one's patient's oral cavity is also a construction zone. Cheryl is one of Dr. Khani's Dental Assistants, and she is a truly extraordinary person. Over the course of 16 visits to restore my smile, we got to know each other far better than I can remember having known anyone in a similar role. At each new step in this long dental process--from a few minor extractions, to caps, to crowns, to implants, to a final whitening--I never ceased to be amazed at the depth and breadth of her knowledge of procedures, and her astonishing ability to balance the needs of the doctor getting things accomplished, with my need as a patient to be treated with compassionate kindness and, in my case, delicacy. She always seems to know, with pitch-perfect accuracy, when to squeeze my hand, offering a gentle word, when to suddenly distract my attention, and when the best remedy in the moment is to tell some wretchedly corny dad joke! I feel truly blessed to have her in my life. It sounds odd when I hear myself say it but, because of Cheryl, "I'm looking forward to my next trip to the dentist's office!" This leaves Dr. Arash Khani, himself. While demure and unassuming in manner, this gentleman's life story is an inspiration. I suspect his humble origins and the difficulties he surmounted in reaching his present position play a major part in making him the easy-going and approachable person he is. As a professional, I'm unable to imagine how anyone could be more adept and well-rounded. He is a wizard at pain blocking--very high on my list! He has equipped his practice with the most modern and efficient devices available. It's easy to see how he has taken the practice he inherited from Dr. Keith Taylor and turned it into the magnificent caring environment it is today. Oh! I almost forgot: like Cheryl, he has a fantastic sense of humor!

The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive without being rushed, and they immediately make you feel at ease. You're offered drinks, and the warm towels for your face are such a small touch that somehow makes a huge difference. The technology here is next level. They use state-of-the-art equipment, including new cleaning machines that basically power-wash your teeth (in the best way possible). It's efficient, comfortable, and honestly impressive. You can tell they invest heavily in keeping the practice modern and patient-focused. What really sets this office apart, though, is the care. Everything is explained clearly and transparently, no pressure, no upselling, just honest recommendations and extremely skilled work. The owner truly goes above and beyond, and you can feel how much pride she takes in her practice and her patients' experience. If you're someone who normally dreads dental visits, this place will completely change your expectations. I actually look forward to coming back, which is something I never thought I'd say about the dentist. Highly, highly recommend.

Beware of incompetent, unprofessional staff and billing errors…read more I went to this office for a cleaning in October 2025 and scheduled a crown for November. Per their policy, I paid a $500 deposit upfront and the remaining balance on the day of the procedure. A few days before Christmas, they began repeatedly calling, emailing, and texting me about a supposed $584 "past due" balance, asking if I had other insurance. Before I even had a chance to respond, they sent a bill. I was then told by their office to call MetLife and ask them to reprocess the claim--something that should never be the patient's responsibility. I did anyway. MetLife confirmed the issue: the dental office had checked the wrong box on the claim, making it appear I had other coverage, which triggered a reversal. I had to explain their own error back to them after being harassed about a balance that was never mine. At no point did the practice acknowledge the mistake or apologize. Instead, the practice manager said she was "frustrated" that I had contacted MetLife--despite their staff directing me to do exactly that--and even claimed MetLife was being dishonest. The incorrect balance still sits on my account with a prompt to pay. They claim they are not actively collecting, but the system will gladly take my money if I choose to pay it. That is unacceptable. Even worse, if this is not resolved, MetLife may deduct this amount from my 2026 benefits--meaning I could lose coverage for care I actually need. I am now overdue for a cleaning and additional dental work, and I no longer feel comfortable returning. The office is aware of this, yet their response has been dismissive at best and hostile at worst. For a practice that advertises itself as the "number one" dentist in Chapel Hill, this experience has been the opposite. Competence, accountability, and basic professionalism matter far more than marketing claims.

I want to start by saying that I genuinely really liked the dentist and was happy with the care I…read morereceived. My negative experience has nothing to do with the dentist personally or the quality of the dental work. My issue is entirely with how the estimate, insurance timing, and billing were handled. I had never needed a root canal or crown before, so I was relying on the office to help me understand the process and what I could expect financially. I had already paid almost $2,000 toward my dental care based on the information and estimates I was given. I was then left with an unexpected balance of nearly $700. What makes this especially frustrating is that this treatment was done less than two weeks before my dental insurance plan reset. Had I understood how the billing and insurance processing would affect my out-of-pocket cost, I could have waited less than two weeks and potentially paid significantly less. I would have appreciated someone explaining that to me and giving me the option to decide whether to proceed immediately or wait until my benefits reset. I completely understand that insurance estimates are not guarantees and that offices cannot always know exactly what insurance will pay. But that is exactly why communication and giving patients options are so important. When someone has never been through this type of treatment before, they don't necessarily know what questions they should be asking. What disappointed me most was how the remaining balance was handled afterward. Within just a couple of months of having the crown completed, the nearly $700 balance was sent to collections. After already paying almost $2,000 and receiving a substantially different final cost than I expected, I would have appreciated some understanding and an opportunity to discuss the discrepancy and payment options before having the account turned over to a debt collector. I really did like the dentist, which is why this experience is so disappointing. I don't expect a dental office to predict exactly what an insurance company will do, but I do expect transparency, communication, and the opportunity to make an informed decision about my care. Had I simply been given more information about my benefits resetting in less than two weeks, I could have made a different financial decision and potentially avoided this entire situation--including being sent to collections. I hope the practice considers improving how it communicates estimates, insurance benefit timing, unexpected balances, and collection procedures. Patients should be given the information and options they need to make informed decisions about both their dental care and their finances.
