I have been going to the UNC dental school for a little over a year. When I first went, I was assigned to a dental student and the match was so bad. I was considering not going back since my experience was so abysmal. But I contacted the school and informed them of how incredibly disappointed I was in the student for so many reasons. They apologized profusely and offered to assign a different student. I was hesitant, but agreed to a new student assignment. I cannot express how completely happy I am with the new assignment. His name is Landon Guy and he is the epitome of what all current and future dentists should strive for. He is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, kind, highly-skilled, creative, not at all condescending. He explains everything he's going to do before he does it. When he makes a suggestion for treatment, he always asks for my input. And he listens to my opinion. And he has a great sense of humor, which is always a bonus! My dental appointment anxiety is just about non-existent due to Landon's expertise. When he graduates, I fully expect to continue as his patient wherever he begins to practice. read more

The billing department is completely unprofessional. I have been in contact with them for over a year. I made payments at the beginning of every month and was told in 2023 that as long as I kept in touch and made payments I would be fine. They unbundled my account and sent some to collections while taking payments from me. I'm disabled and on a fixed income and there wasn't any care taken to make sure my credit wasn't damaged. When I asked to speak to someone in charge I was told "she's in a meeting and she will call back". No care, No effort, nothing. I'm a good person with great credit until Carolina Dentistry. This is only my second bad review in 15 years. I guess I have no choice but to fight for myself. Very disappointed! If they reach out to me I would work with them. I can't get anywhere calling them. So unfortunate. They didn't have anything to lose treating me fairly. I understand that businesses have to deal with irresponsible people, but I'm not that guy. If anyone has advice for me I'm open to it. Thanks for listening. Joseph Graziano. read more

Covid protocols matter to me. When I have my teeth cleaned, I expect the hygienist to be fully up-to-date on Covid-19 vaccines. Today, after waiting months for an appointment, and being verbally screened myself by the receptionist, I turned the question around and asked whether the staff was fully vaccinated. "You'll have to ask your hygienist," the receptionist replied. I asked the hygienist before I sat down in the chair. "That's a private matter," she said. "Why would you not say, if you've been vaccinated?" I asked. "It's not required," she replied. I walked out the door. Health practitioners who fail to do everything they can to protect patient health during a pandemic have violated all codes of health ethics that I've ever read. Asking the vaccine status of a health practitioner is not a "private matter." Nothing that happens in a dental chair is private. It is useless to wipe down waiting room chairs when "health practitioners" working three inches away from patients' faces are spewing germs directly on them. Any health-care concern that puts politics above patient safety doesn't care about its patients. I am 70 years old and have patronized the UNC School of Dentistry Dental Faculty Practice for more than 20 years. As of this minute, I am looking for a new dental practice. read more

Dr. Eric Rivera... remember that name. He is a phenomenon! He was my second doc at the Faculty Practice, and resolved some issues that hadn't been addressed before. He IS the reason for this five-star review. I needed a root canal. Nuf said? Dr. Rivera's schedule was booked for months. I was getting ready to leave town for months... he created a slot for me, early on a Monday morning. He started WITHOUT anesthetic, and promised he would stop if I raised my left hand. I only raised a finger or two twice, and he stopped for a check-in immediately. He finished the entire procedure without giving me a shot. He got me ready for my regular dentist to do the foundation and the crown. Did I mention that he dd this WITHOUT GIVING ME A SHOT?!? Talk about a wonderful technique. Dr. Rivera is truly gifted and caring. FIVE STARS. PS: The desk staff were also wonderful - check in took fewer than 15 seconds! read more

Been a UNC dental school patient for over a decade, all I know is my teeth looks worse than ever and got repeated infections in areas that student handled deep within the gum beneath tooth bone so got to be from dirty instruments . Also I currently have assigned dental student from hell who is unreachable and do not do any administrative work, computer entry, patient required signature etc when I brought it to his attention he accused me of being rude and made him uncomfortable. My first attraction to use them for my dental work was pricing, it's no longer the case, they do not apply any insurance you give them and they take for ever to treat patients, lucky if you get an appointment once or twice a year. Currently they noticed a tooth infection, they stoped implant work and sent me home, still waiting to hear from them. I regret using them just want them to finish current work and take my business elsewhere . The director of patient relation is bias, don't give you the benefit of the doubt and act like you need them more than they need you. read more

I have had nothing but terrible experiences with this practice. In my final visit, the dentist seemed out of it and ended up cutting my lip and face with a tool he was using to grind down a filling. I couldn't feel it because of the Novocain, but the dental assistant finally stopped him with a whisper of, "She's bleeding..." I now have a permanent facial scar to remind me how awful this place is. Even years later, the service is terrible -- I've been trying for months, via multiple emails and phone calls, to get some old X-rays transferred to my new (wonderful!) dentist. The staff are unhelpful at best and outright rude at worst. read more

UNC Dentistry practice, particularly the student dentistry practice, should be recognized for their outstanding service and compassionate care. I have received care from Cameran Gray at UNC Dental School Clinic over the past several months and I can't speak more positively about my experience. Dr. Rivera is an outstanding endodontist. I have always had horrible experiences with dentists and have been scarred by some to the point where the thought of going to one is anxiety producing. Normally I have severe pain and they don't numb me properly and often require multiple injections that leave my mouth so sore and numb for hours that it makes it difficult to talk or eat for hours following any procedure. This was not at all the case with Dr. Rivera. He numbed me using small syringes instead of the huge ones I'm used to and got me numb so quick and in the least painless manner I have ever had in my life. I had a tooth that was bothering me and causing severe pain and hypersensitivity. He was kind enough to fit me in today and he did a partial pulpectomy to fix the pain. Tonight I'm pain free because of him. If you need to have any kind of root canal or any other endodontic procedure done, I highly recommend Dr. Rivera. He has the best technique I have ever experienced and is also very nice and gentle with patients. As someone who has lived in many different cities and seen many dentists through the years, Dr. Rivera is the best experience with dentistry I ever had! I just wish UNC wasn't out of network for my dental insurance but sometimes you have to pay out of pocket to get wonderful care I guess. read more

I've been going to the Dental Faculty Practice for my dental needs (and there are many) for nearly a year. The practice is comprised of professors from the UNC School of Dentistry (not dental students, as a lot of people seem to think), so you can rest assured that they know what they're doing. Their services are priced fairly well and will probably cost you less in the long run than at a private practice. Of course, there are a few trade-offs, as you may have to wait a little longer for an appointment since the resident dentists are also busy teaching classes and holding office hours. Parking is in the Dogwood Deck of UNC Hospitals, which means you do have to pay to park. It's about $1 per hour, so you shouldn't have to pay more than $2 for a typical appointment. Another drawback is that the reception does not file your insurance for you - you have to pay in full, file your own claim, and then wait for reimbursement from your insurance company. It's a bit of a nuisance, but I usually find when I receive my insurance check that my services are cheaper than if I had paid a co-pay or just my designated percentage. Case in point: my last cleaning cost me just $4! read more

I've been going to the Dental Faculty Practice for over 2 years now. My teeth have been awesome. Joanne is a great hygenist. She's so friendly and good with the pick. She always emphasizes how I need to floss more, but does it in a nice way. The first time I went the appointment went really long. The dentist explained everything really well like a professor would and wanted to make sure I understood the reason for each thing. It was kinda cool. Dogwood parking is pretty convenient andd there are a couple different bus routes to get dropped off in front of the hospital. Hey it's not dental school students either, so they don't take 4 hours to do a cleaning. read more

Have been trying to make an appt for my daughter for 3 weeks; no one ever answers the phone. You listen to a very long message and leave a voicemail. Someone may/may not call you back. If they do, it is usually 2-3 minutes before the end of office hours. Whole thing seems designed to minimize work for the staff and providers. I am happy to report that my daughter will be switching to another practice. Will be glad to leave the archaic tools and processes in the last millennium where they belong. read more

So, I had a cavity recently (cue the Cavity Creeps! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8Y_vEKbZhU ). Needing to get that bad boy drilled and filled, I went to Dr. Tiffee at the UNC Dental Faculty Practice. In terms of service and time, the Dental Faculty was great. I was in on time, and Dr. Tiffee and his assistant did the drilling and filling with no pain on my end (good ol' Novocaine!). It's also relatively convenient from the D or J Bus (I've only taken those over in that area, but I would only assume that there are others too). One downside: As Adrienne mentioned, they don't file the insurance for you, which means you'll be doing all of your filing yourself. It's a hassle, but it's not terrible. read more

Their lab analyzed something my idiot dentist (Dr. Holman) removed from my mouth. While it turned out to be nothing, I was billed for months after having been told it was taken care of, I didn't owe anything. They finally stopped sending me bills after telling me I didn't owe anything. But it turned out they only stopped sending me bills because when the named changed to Adams School, the software changeover screwed things up and it bumped a digit off my address. So they were still sending me bills, but to an address that doesn't exist. Because of this, they sent many people to collections for money they didn't actually owe, and they never heard about it. I was included in this group. However, I didn't find out about it for a year, because their threatening letters didn't come through to me. I only found out because my credit took about a 55 point hit, and after 6 months of investigation (mostly because UNC billing literally NEVER CALLS YOU BACK), I finally found out what was going on. UNC refused to do anything about it. The credit services (Experian, etc) also would not help me. They just threw me under the bus, even though they knew about the system error. Believe it or not, it was my 4-page appeal that I mailed to the collections agency that actually was what saved my ass. They actually agreed with me and sent the case back to UNC, saying they weren't going to pursue this debt because it was unjust, and they had the credit monitoring agencies return my score to what it was and should have been. So all I can say is that unless you want to put your finances at risk by dealing with these heartless morons, I would stay far far away. Also, don't go to Shana Holman -- you can see my review on her for more details and for putting me in this mess in the first place. read more

Pros: Top notch care from very well-trained, trustworthy dentists. I saw Dr. Fouad here for a root canal. Dr. Fouad is amazing... very calm and gentle, explains what he is going to do, etc. Cons: The front desk is disorganized and slow. For example, they lost the referral from my general dentist. You can stand at the desk and wait 10 minutes to check in for your appointment. You might have to call 3 or more times before you get through to anyone and are able to make an appointment. Parking is an enormous pain and will cost you extra. They will not bill your insurance and are out of network with all insurance carriers. Given the pros and cons, it might be worth it to come here for a special procedure but not for regular preventive care. I came here for a second opinion when I was told I needed a root canal, and I ended choosing Dr. Fouad because he has such a good bedside manner. But I won't be going back for any other procedures. read more

The dentists here barely look at your teeth. I think the longest they ever spent with me after a cleaning was about 30 seconds. Seeing patients is not their priority. When I went to a new dentist after 6 years of care at the UNC Dental Faculty practice she found all kinds of issues with my teeth that had been overlooked. read more

Dr. Lim is one of the best doctors I have ever had, but the front office is an absolute nightmare. I have been waiting for over a month 1/2 for a printout to to file with my insurance, with multiple calls made and noone following through. You can never get anyone to answer the phone, and last time I went, I waited for 45 minutes to get checked in, and 1 1/2 hours to get checked out. This is ridiculous. How can such a wonderful dentist work with such an incompetent staff?? Steer clear if you don't want to have your blood pressure reach sky-high limits having to deal with this office. read more

I have been going here for about 3 years, and really love the staff & quality of care. Every little thing I might bring up is diligently attended to. They have never found a cavity(!) but did do a great job on a night guard and also on redoing a filling that fell out. The only issue is that the practice is located in the UNC hospital area, so plan on parking and walking a ways. read more

What excellent, expert care I received from Dr. Luiz Pimenta and his dental assistant Rocio! I have been searching for a dentist for years who was both compassionate and super knowledgeable about the unique dental problems I have had since birth, and Dr. Pimenta is fantastic. He listened carefully during my first visit and added extra steps to the procedure he performed later which led to such a positive, non-traumatic experience for me. His vast knowledge base of my problems led to an excellent outcome that I've never had with other dentists, ever. As a result, I received a beautiful smile and a partial denture (at my request, rather than implants) that fits so well I forget it's there. My prior problems with very sore teeth, facial pain, and difficulty playing my musical instrument have all gone away - 100%! I cannot thank him and all his staff enough for their help, and look forward to returning knowing I will be well cared for. I would highly recommend him, and the UNC Dental Faculty Practice! read more

I just moved to the area and this facility was recommended in the Chapel Hill 2012 Visitor and Relocation Guide. I have an expectant wife (due today) and needed some immediate attention to what I suspect is a previously treated root-canal that has become infected. The receptionist was completely unhelpful and finally referred me to the emergency unit who were even more unpleasant and unhelpful. Their offer of 'help' was to pull the tooth for $200. The fact that I have insurance seemed to be irrelevant. I'm searching elsewhere. read more

Got up at 5:30am to drive my son from Charlotte, NC for a consultation here, because he had a Charlotte dental treatment plan for getting 8 cavities filled which had me concerned, and I wanted a trustworthy consultation. My GP told me that this is one of the best dental schools in the nation. Dr. Lee found some areas to watch, but she didn't find anything that needed filling. She did find two additional concerns for watching, and she was pleasant, thorough, thoughtful and conservative in approach---which I liked. This visit saved us over $1,000 in treatment costs. I only wish that the medical and dental schools nationally had a standardized reporting form to help other facilities when possible deficiencies are noted. My youngest son had a bad ortho treatment experience in Charlotte, and we found that UNC's med school surgeons were helpful in that case too. Wish Charlotte had dental and medical facilities as good as UNC. Always read reviews "not currently recommended" at the bottom in light grey and post your own reviews. Dr. Pimenta is a very good doctor and teacher. He took out the time to make sure he helped me, and without him my life would be miserable. It's always nice to have a doctor or dentist that cares truly about their patients. Not only is Dr. Pimenta the best. Dr Daniels is awesome as well. They all work together to make you smile. Am a patient of Dr. Thiago Morelli for perio problems, and dental implants with bone grafting. He is meticulous, thorough, and gentle in his work. Will not go back. Their prices are no cheaper than any other office and if they know what they are doing I never found out because they never performed any work. I set up several appointments but the dentist never started any work. Wait for an hour then told no time to fix that day. Never found out when he would fix the problems or how long it would take. Never returned my phone calls and if you dare question why, you are treated like a you are a bother. Absolutely do not care about the patient. read more

Have been going here for several years. Great facilities and staff. Very caring and dedicated group of professionals.

My two boys have been seeing Dr. Q for 7 years and she is FABULOUS! She was the only pediatric dentist in the triangle area that took the time to actually CARE about my boys' teeth, and believe me we saw MANY pediatric dentists. Both my sons suffered from dental caries and all the pediatric dentists wanted to blame us for lack of care, which was NOT the case. Dr Q. took one look at their teeth and instantly wanted to help us figure out what was going on. With her help, my youngest was diagnosed with silent reflux (the main reason his teeth were melting out of his head!) My youngest has had several teeth removed by Dr. Q in her office with the aid of nitrous. They are never fearful of going to her office, and always are eager. She treats them as people, and speaks to them and is straight with them. She gives us all the information and always gives us options for care. I trust her implicitly with the care of my boys and their teeth. read more

Drs. Taisier A. Sulaiman and Thiago Morelli have been excellent oral care providers, as well as Wendy and Amy and the ladies assisting Dr. Morelli. Dr. Sulaiman repaired a tooth and his result very pleasing. He has done many restorations and tries not to use anestesia unless one really needs it. He is so dexterous, one usually does not need this, but he and assistant always remind you to lift your hand if you feel intolerable pain. Dr. Sulaiman is such a kind person on top being a top notch professional, I am thankful for the tooth that broke and caused our paths to cross. This team listens to your concerns and tries to help. Dr. Morelli is very precise, meticulous and explains every step of what he needs to do and why he is doing it. He also is very gentle, very knowledgeable and will not prescribe antibiotic e.g unless one truly needs it. Front desk Robin has conquered me with her kindness, her charm while remaining professional, and always very courteous. These are the professionals that enable the 5 star review. The only not so good things are location, parking lots and parking. I wish the dental faculty would open satellite locations with same professionals. I am very thankful that we have this available and have recommended UNC Dental Faculty Practice to others. read more

I have been a patient of the UNC DFP for over 30 years, starting when I was a dental school employee and continuing through the years. Why? Because I have received excellent care by each dental professional that has touched my mouth! Take for example this past summer, when pesky tooth sensitivity resulted in a root canal and crown. My awesome dentist for these 3-plus decades, Dr. John Sturdevant, squeezed me into his packed schedule and patiently worked through a variety of tests to confirm which tooth was the culprit. After the initial preparation of the tooth for a crown (kindly scheduled before I went on vacation), my next stop was a root canal due to the nature of the tooth's crack. Dr. Sturdevant's referral to Dr. Peter Tawil in DFP Endodontics led to an excellent first experience with an endodontist. Dr. Tawil took pictures during the procedure and took time to show me the pictures and explain what he saw/what he did. Returning to DFP for my crown was unbelievably smooth, as Dr. Sturdevant had been meticulous in taking good impressions during tooth preparation--the crown fit with no further work needed. I returned to DFP yet again for my semi-annual tooth cleaning with Janet Crutchfield, who consistently leaves my pearly whites truly pearly and white! Terry Brown has served as my amazing go-to whenever I've had questions about scheduling, payments, etc. Looking for quality dental care by personable professionals? I highly recommend seeking that dental care at UNC DFP! read more

Terrible Customer Service, got reccomended by my dentist for my TMD problem to UNC Dental, i made an appointment with them looking forward, I missed a couple calls from them and when I called back the receptionist was absolutely rude and terrible, asked for my name and when she could not find it, had an attitude about not finding it and she did not even ask for spelling she just straight up had an attitude about me not being a patient, then when i give her my exact spelling she dosent even apologize, acted like it was my fault. So before i hang up I ask her a simple question if possible to file my insurance before I come in to have my appointment, (I honestly did not know since it was my first time!!!!) Her response to that was a very rude and talked to me like I was stupid... It was a simple question !!! So i ask why she is being rude and I cancel my appointment...
