I want to start by saying I have no doubt that Dr. Jelic is a great surgeon. However, please do not start a consultation or treatment here with him if you're needing orthognathic/jaw surgery. My grammar isn't the best and I know I'm wordy, but here is my story. I went to Dr. Jelic because he definitely has experience and expertise with surgical procedures. What I didn't know was that he has a strong stance against vaccines. There's a lot to unpack there but that's not the crux of what happened or why I'm upset. Due to his vaccination status, he isn't authorized to work in a hospital and cannot perform double jaw surgery. However- he does not tell you this until as late into the process as possible. This is after you have already invested thousands on the surgical pre-planning. For me, it was also after I had already been in braces for months. His lobby (which, honestly, is very nice and cozy) has jaw surgery pamphlets and his website as of today still features it as an option. They're able to collect quite a bit of money upfront with no intention of actually performing the surgery, then leave you hanging. I do not believe it is an honest way to conduct a business. At the time, I was told instead we can do one jaw at a time (several weeks in between) in his office. We decided to go forwards with this and scheduled to meet in 3 months. On the morning of my scheduled follow up, I got a call saying they would need to do both jaws at the same time and they can't treat me. I asked if there was anyone they could refer me to but they offered no help or sympathy. They did not respond to any emails or calls from me afterwards. I wanted to thank Siri because her review gave me the courage to say something when the rest of their reviews are so positive. I finally finished my braces journey and found out from my orthodontist that I'm not the first person this happened to. He was not aware of Dr. Jelic's inability to operate in a hospital until recently, with the other patient. This is someone he works with and he intentionally kept this information from. The first patient had gone through the entire process required to prepare for jaw surgery, only to be dropped last minute as well. I lost time, money, and peace of mind for months, not being able to get clear answers from his office. I ended up needing to change and redo my entire braces plan.I feel like the situation was extremely unethical and I wanted to put it out there, and hopefully help even at least one person out there who is looking into their options. This review shouldn't impact you much if you're looking to get a more routine procedure, like an extraction. Jaw surgery and the preparation required is a hard enough process on its own, place your trust and resources with an honest doctor. read more

The duress caused by Dr. Jelic's office administration throughout my 17-month journey toward BSSO and chin advancement surgery has negatively affected my life. This may not be because of Dr. Jelic himself, as my appointments with him were all timely and straightforward. I have been fortunate to encounter many positive experiences in the realm of medicine. I was fully prepared for this experience to have joined those ranks. This surgery was for the healing of my physical pain. The experience with my orthodontist on this case has been outstanding. I have been wearing metal bracket braces for 21 months as a 44-year-old mother of three young children. Because of the way Dr. Jelic's administration has handled my case, I have now been in braces for several additional and unneeded months, each with their usual cost of $275/month. After roughly 16 months as a patient of Dr. Jelic's office, a process that included imaging, surgical planning, and bi-monthly appointments, a nurse at my last appointment directed me to request two itemized listings for the two upcoming surgeries at check-out so I could understand the cost differences if I opted to separate the procedures. The office administrator dismissed the nurse's request for separate pricing and seemed unconcerned about our questions that resulted from another all-encompassing listing that I did receive. The listing sent to us exceeded the cost range of the surgeries given to us at the start of my treatment. The administrator even misspelled their own name in their last email sent to me, causing me to wonder if my case was being taken seriously at all. Weeks later after I submitted another email asking whether or not a BSSO involves any short-term or long-term pressure applied to the turbinates--while this question never received a response, my husband did open a Dear John letter stating that because I had expressed dissatisfaction from not being able to acquire answers to the questions raised by my nurse, that I was free to pursue a BSSO elsewhere. It was also cited that I could pursue surgery elsewhere because I had been emailed as a follow-up to *my own question asked to the administrator during the phone call*. but that I had not responded promptly. The letter stated that because I did not reply promptly to this email, that this was interrupted as a lack of teamwork. I initiated treatment for my facial pain. I had paid the bills, gone through with large braces and experienced 17 months of responsiveness, during which time the administrator contacted me through text messages and phone calls. The point of the response I received pertained to my own request to speak directly with the doctor-- wouldn't it require a viewpoint of teamwork from Dr. Jelic's office to perform the due diligence of "This patient has never not responded before. There are multiple ways to follow-up with her via text or phone call as I have in the past?" Instead, it was determined that the best next step for the patient is restart their BSSO journey, in spite of their current pain level, in spite of the last 16 months they have already spent in braces. I had recently had a medical problem that prohibited me from taking penicillin. Dr. Jelic due to his medical background knew exactly what to do with an IV drip of special medication. Dr. Jelic and his staff are amazing and I would 100% recommend this place to anyone! I had a dental abscess and had to get my tooth extracted, which ultimately meant that I had to a get a dental implant. My case was complicated because I had to get a sinus lift and bone graft prior to the dental implant. Dr. Jelic explained the entire procedure to me and took the time to answer all of my questions, and he even called me after the surgery to see how I was doing. As a grad student, I was financially strapped, but Dr. Jelic and his team were incredibly accommodating and worked with me to find a financially feasible solution without compromising quality of care. From the initial contact to schedule my appointment (which by the way, their office initiated), to the actual evaluation, the staff was not only professional, but friendly and comforting. Dr. Jeffrey Jelic was the second oral and maxillofacial surgeon I visited in Durham, and I am so glad I went. The first one I visited charged me $375 for a consultation during which he told me nothing, except "I don't know why you have TMJ," and that I needed an MRI (which comes with a $150 copay and, let's face it, I'm not what you'd call wealthy), which he insisted I have done at one radiology clinic in particular. Un petit shady, non? Having suffered progressive TMJ and bruxism for nearly six years, that has resulted in constant pain and soreness, as well as malocclusion of my otherwise beautiful teeth, I was downtrodden after my visit to that first guy. But my dentist, Dr. Velma Cooper, referred me to Dr. Jelic. Interestingly enough, both attended the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and, even more impressively, Dr. Jelic also went on to earn his MD from the Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine. Homeboy is a DMD / MD, so you know he knows his stuff. In our consultation---only $90, thankyouverymuch---Dr. Jelic explained very clearly what our options were, as well as his preferences for the order in which we should try such interventions. Although he is a surgeon, he certainly didn't push surgery on me; in fact, it was presented as the very last and most radical tactic. The first was fitting me with an occlusal guard, which I have been wearing day and night to MUCH relief. Of course, this dental appliance isn't a cure but, at $1200 out of pocket---because dental insurance is a racket and doesn't cover TMJ, jerks---it is a comparatively affordable and certainly less invasive alternative to surgery. I opted for the appliance at my consultation, and our next appointment was set up for just a few days later, where they took molds of my teeth, which were sent off to be made into a mouth guard. The turnaround is about two weeks, and then there are several weekly appointments following for fittings---these are included in the $1200 paid for the guard---where Dr. Jelic whittles down and polishes away the appliance until it is subtle enough to be worn without much distraction or impediment to speech. I've been wearing mine day and night for a few months now, and am thrilled that I no longer have to deal with headaches caused by teeth clenching. The wearing down of the enamel on my molars has ceased, too, thank goodness. Georgia is the practice manager, and she runs a tight ship. Terri was great working with me on the cost, and I appreciated her kindness and forthrightness. Amanda, Kelly, and Sue round out the qualified team of medical professionals, and have all be a pleasure to work with. For now, the guard is working really well for me but, should I decide to try surgery at some point in the future, Dr. Jelic will absolutely be the surgeon I seek out. read more

I needed a good oral surgeon to create a dental solution for my lower jaw. Dr. Jelic was recommended by my peridontist and the results are FANTASTIC! I could not be happier with EVERY step of this process. I am a bruxer. There, I've said it. I grind my teeth at night, hard. Because of this activity, I have lost all my lower teeth, and have been wearing dentures for many years. I HATE denture paste, denture glue, denture powder - whatever you want to call it. So, I had 4 mini-implants (one piece metal rods) inserted into my lower jaw so that my denture would not need that stuff and the implants would support my denture. That worked fine for a while, but going into my fourth year, my implants were loose - I ground all four implants out of my jaw as well as doing damage to the back side of my five remaining upper teeth. I needed a new plan. I went back to the peridontist who put in my first set of implants and he referred me to someone with more experience dealing with jaw nerves (I have one exactly where they want to have an implant.) That is where Dr. Jelic at the Center for Functional and Aesthetic Facial Surgery fits in. It is important to understand, at this point, that my oral surgeon and my prosthodontist worked hand in hand regarding the location of the implants, how the implants would be supported so that I wouldn't repeat my damage a second time, and also solve the gooey, gluey issue and stop the jaw bone regression that already occurring. The decision: a permanent, reinforced denture for my lower jaw. The implants they chose were conventional, two piece implants. The base is surgically inserted below the gum line and caped. The gum tissue is allowed to grow over the top of the implant, giving time for the bone and the implant to fuse together for maximum strength. Then the base is uncovered and the top piece is screwed in, with whatever attachment the prosthodontist decides is the best adaptation for the denture; in my case, screws. The whole idea of using a reinforced denture was all Dr. Jelic's idea. He explained that implants are very strong when pressure is applied to the top of the implant, and minimal damage is done in that situation. The reason why my first set of implants came out is because the pressure I was applying was not only from the top, but also causing them to move from side to side (due to the fact that I actually chew in my sleep) and that is what wore away the supporting bone. With a wire band included as part of the support, there would be no side to side or front to back movement, thus avoiding a repeat of implant set number one. Brilliant. Before anything could take place, the crucial issue of where to place the problem implant without hitting that darn nerve. It was absolutely imperative to have both doctors involved in making that decision. But, it was Dr. Cunningham who built the template for Dr. Jelic to use for implant placement, that made all the difference in this entire process. In the end, it was Dr. Cunningham who drove this entire proceedure from beginning to end. Like I said, first the consensus on where to put the implants, and what kind of implants. Also, the doctors decided that to help give support to the implants, there would be a band of flat wire inside the denture that would "cradle" the implants, just in front of and just behind the implants, to stop the horizontal movement that is part of the grinding motion. The denture would then be screwed into the top of the implants so that nothing would move. The surgery took place in Dr. Jelic's office. But, unlike some of my previous oral surgeries, Dr. Jelic's office is equiped as a full-on surgical facility with a clean room and the like. Everybody was in scrubs and sanitation was kept at the highest level and I felt like I was in something more like a hospital operating room rather than a "dentist" level office. They had me "wrapped" so tightly and I got so warm, that I started to hyperventilate before the surgery started. Easy fix, no problems. And Dr. Cunningham was there during the surgery as well. After the operation was complete, the surgical staff joked with me about how funny it was that I was having a "conversation" with Dr. Cunningham toward the end. The entire surgery was a smooth direct process with no complications. That is a good surgeon! Dr. Jelic and his staff kept up with me during my healing time. He actually called me the evening of the surgery and a day or two later. From then on, regular appointments spaced every month or so to make certain that everything was going as planned. Even a couple of extra x-rays were included just to make sure that I'm not doing something I shouldn't to those all important implants and that the bone iand the implant are becoming a "single unit."
