I am getting married in March and I dreamed about feeling confident in my smile for our wedding day. So I finally started looking into getting it replaced. I wanted to have it done, but was very anxious about the experience secondary to my generalized anxiety about going to any dentist. My first attempt was in March (2019) with a different dentist and it went TERRIBLY. Luckily, I managed to escape with my smile untouched, but I was certain that I was doomed and I would never feel good about my teeth. I also felt even more anxious about it, and questioned if I could try again. Luckily, I stumbled upon Dr. Kofford and decided to give it one more try. Throughout the entire experience his humor and kind spirit gave me comfort and confidence in him. By the time the surgery date came around I found that I was not the least bit anxious, but actually felt excited about the transition. My March appointment itself went smoothly, but the interaction at checkout was alarming. Historically, the office billed my insurance first and then contacted me to pay any remaining balance immediately once insurance processed. When I was told I owed an amount that day, I explained this had never been their practice and asked if they could bill insurance as they always had. The receptionist, Kris, responded in a manner that was unexpectedly hostile. She stated, "We aren't doing that anymore, you have to pay today," and when I asked if they could bill insurance for this visit, she replied, "No, I want the money today." She then added that she was "tired of hunting people down for payment," despite the fact that I have always paid promptly and have never required follow up. When I asked for her name, she refused, saying, "You don't need to know my name." She then made an inappropriate and inaccurate remark: "It's not my fault you can't afford the treatment... you need to pay now." At no point did I indicate an inability to pay; I simply did not have my card with me because their longstanding billing process had never required me same day payment. I left the office in tears. Shortly afterward, Dr. Singeltary called me personally. He apologized for the interaction, acknowledged that Kris could come across "gruff," and assured me he would address the matter with staff the next morning. He also told me that my next cleaning would be complimentary as a gesture of goodwill and asked me not to leave a review. Based on his assurances and the fact that I had previously been satisfied with his care, I chose not to post anything at that time. Four months later, I drove 45 minutes to my scheduled appointment, an appointment that had been made by my hygienist before I left the office in March. I had not received a reminder, which concerned me, but I still arrived on time. When I checked in, Kris asked my name, looked at her screen, and said "oh," then whispered something to her co-worker. She informed me I was not on the schedule. When I explained the appointment had been made months earlier, she responded, "Yeah, but you and I had an issue." I informed her that Dr. Singeltary had called me after the incident, apologized on her behalf, and had asked that I keep my appointment. She responded, "I wish he had told me that," and reiterated that I had not been placed on the schedule. At that point, it was clear that the issue had not been addressed, the promised follow up had not occurred, and the same staff member who caused the initial problem was still permitted to treat patients in this manner. This reflects a significant breakdown in professionalism, communication, and patient care. I'm blessed that my primary dentist referred me to Foley Orthodontics for much needed braces. From the moment I met Dr Foley and his office manager, Nancy, I knew I was in good hands. It was very clear to me that Dr Foley genuinely cared about making sure we had the best outcome possible. Over the past year, I went every 4-6 weeks and not once did I have a bad experience. The overall environment is a breath of fresh air. From checking in with the front desk to leaving, I noticed staff acknowledge every patient that went in and out with a warm smile. In addition, Dr Foley never failed to make sure he checked in with you to make sure you were okay and if you needed anything. At every visit, they make you feel as though you're the most important patient. I never felt as though they were "too busy" and rushed my care. Additionally, over the past year was challenging for me and struggled with getting to my appointments on time as I was a full time caregiver for my mom. I recall an occasion when I was running so behind I just knew they were going to cancel my appointment since I wouldn't arrive until closing. Instead, Nancy consulted with Dr Foley who had plans to leave at a certain time. After a very brief hold, Nancy told me to drive safe and Dr Foley would make the time to wait for me which was well after five. Again, when I arrived way past my appointment time, I was greeted with a smile and not for a second felt as though I'd inconvenienced him or his staff that stayed to accommodate me. I went to Dr. Jelic because he definitely has experience and expertise with surgical procedures. What I didn't know was that he has a strong stance against vaccines. There's a lot to unpack there but that's not the crux of what happened or why I'm upset. Due to his vaccination status, he isn't authorized to work in a hospital and cannot perform double jaw surgery. However- he does not tell you this until as late into the process as possible. This is after you have already invested thousands on the surgical pre-planning. For me, it was also after I had already been in braces for months. His lobby (which, honestly, is very nice and cozy) has jaw surgery pamphlets and his website as of today still features it as an option. They're able to collect quite a bit of money upfront with no intention of actually performing the surgery, then leave you hanging. I do not believe it is an honest way to conduct a business. At the time, I was told instead we can do one jaw at a time (several weeks in between) in his office. We decided to go forwards with this and scheduled to meet in 3 months. On the morning of my scheduled follow up, I got a call saying they would need to do both jaws at the same time and they can't treat me. I asked if there was anyone they could refer me to but they offered no help or sympathy. They did not respond to any emails or calls from me afterwards. I wanted to thank Siri because her review gave me the courage to say something when the rest of their reviews are so positive. I finally finished my braces journey and found out from my orthodontist that I'm not the first person this happened to. He was not aware of Dr. Jelic's inability to operate in a hospital until recently, with the other patient. This is someone he works with and he intentionally kept this information from. The first patient had gone through the entire process required to prepare for jaw surgery, only to be dropped last minute as well. I lost time, money, and peace of mind for months, not being able to get clear answers from his office. I ended up needing to change and redo my entire braces plan.I feel like the situation was extremely unethical and I wanted to put it out there, and hopefully help even at least one person out there who is looking into their options. They simply repeated that the full amount was required. I called multiple oral surgeons in Cary/Raleigh afterward, and every single one quoted around $130 for the entire consultation, including X‑rays. I think this place is Overpriced, and charge way too much and no transparency in pricing. I think their charging/billing practices should be reviewed. This office's pricing is far outside the local norm, and the lack of transparency is unacceptable. I would strongly recommend asking for a full cost breakdown before agreeing to anything here.
