Nice little hispanic market with selection of Mexican food and sauces. The lamb stew (Birria) is pretty good and it's offered on weekends only. Note that the Birria doesn't come with tortillas. Good alternative to other expensive restaurants.

Ceviche & pork tamales

We were in the area and read that they have the best tamales. So we had to pick up 5 mild spicy pork because the really spicy ones were sold out. We also picked up a tub of the ceviche. The reviews did not lie about the tamales. They're legit! Definitely willing be back for additional flavors. The ceviche was packed with shrimp. It's a little sweeter than we like, but additional hot sauce and limes would make it perfect.

Best tamales I've had besides my Mexican grandma's tamales

Best tamales in I've had besides my hispanic grandma. I'm so happy to find a tamale place with a good variety. We tried their pork, chicken, and jalapeño with cheese. It was also very cheap. I believe the tamales were no more than $2/each. They also sell great cuts of meat for grilling as well. I'll definitely be coming back here for my tamale fix and to try out other things.

Authentic Mexican meat market.. plenty of options to be had.. the carne asada was put in marinade right in front if you, so good! The staff was more than helpful and very pleasant! Two things.. the store front is hard to distinguish and it's not in a great neck of the woods.. perhaps during the day light while visiting..

Small hole in the wall grocery store located in White Center. I was in search of some authentic tamales and I came upon this place on yelp. After reading the reviews, I had to try it out. PROS: Service: Excellent customer service. I called a day before to place my order since after reading the reviews they usually run out of tamales at the end of the day. The gal who answered the phone was very sweet and helpful. You can call ahead to pick up as little as one tamale! Price: Very affordable! $1 per tamale or $11 for a dozen! Food variety: They offer a variety of butchered meats, jerky, candies, spices, pastries, etc. They also sell homemade fresh salsas! I ordered salsa verde, salsa roja and pico de gallo. All very fresh and VERY spicy. CONS: Tamales: I ordered the chicken, pork, cheese/jalapeno and spicy pork (my favorite). They were very fresh and the meat were well seasoned. The only thing was that there wasn't enough filling and too much masa. I felt like they could have added more meat to the center so it wouldn't be mostly dough. TIP: Call ahead if you plan on buying tamales towards the evening.

Log Wood: snack, candy, toy, or spice?

Cookware that I can hide inside of is a good thing. I can't say if there is an actual correlation, but it seems to me that the bigger the pot that the tamales come out of, the better they are. My loose reasoning being that who in their right mind would buy a giant steamer pot big enough to hide Jimmy Hoffa unless they meant business? Today they had both chicken and pork tamales in roja sauce. You remember those water snakes you had as a kid? The weird squishy water-filled plastic tube toy that would slide of your hand while you held it? Most tamales feel like that to me--except maybe a little flatter. And I swear that [these] were just as heavy. Really solid. Like how dense you imagined Hobbit bread would be like in Lord of the Rings. I've had bland tamales but these are seasoned expertly. A definite cut above the rest. Most days, I'm picking up meat here (it's not called a Tamal-ceria, after all!) My husband is particularly fond of their carne asada. Pounded thin, and seasoned heavily. I had only one tasteless prep of chicken that I can't remember the name but I'll tell you the Pollo Adobado was really flavorful! We threw the pounded flat, bone-in chicken onto the grill and it was explosive in flavor without being salty. They even had game hen Adobado! You can also get plain butchered chicken for $1.69lb. That gives major grocers a run for their money. And their HOMEMADE SALSA made my tongue sing. Spicy with large chunks of jalapenos (or serranos?) Our dinner guests and I fought over the last of the 16oz container we had. FOOLISH. I'm buying two next time. Meats, canned goods, and...Palo del Brasil. Packed in a 'SnackMex' baggie, that advertises it could contain a snack, candy, toys or spices....Palo del Brasil is Log Wood. Pieces.of.wood.in.a.baggie. Not sure what it's for, but if I got a SnackMex bag in my stocking at Christmas with wood in it, I'd be p-ticked.

I usually avoid White Center, but the reviews made this place so tempting that we had to go on an adventure. The little grocery is a really cute hole in the wall and you will always know a place is good if natives shop and eat there! The tamales here are amazing, huge and only $1 (12 for $11!). Two of them will fill you up, three will induce you into a food coma. There are tons of types of meats, salsas and desserts to shop for but on our first trip we went straight to the tamales. I will definitely go back soon.

First guy I talked to either came from Dallas or knows Dallas inside and out. He has family there, has lived in Seattle a long time, and told me his grandfather used to bring him here as a kid. He's been eating here basically his whole life. Second guy had lived here for 40 years and said this was somehow his first time ever trying it, even though he'd walked past it forever and always meant to stop in. We stood there talking for a while. Really good guy. The woman behind the counter did not speak English, so I got to tell her in my very limited Spanish, "Thank you very much for your work. It looks beautiful. I really appreciate it." She answered me in Spanish, and then I had to admit, also in Spanish, that I was very sorry but I did not understand Spanish, I only barely know how to speak it. She laughed. I laughed. It was great. Then I got back home, opened the box they split for me and my mom, and this was half of it: best Reuben I have ever had in my life. Just one of those unexpectedly great little trip moments. Good food, good people, good conversation, and one of those places that feels like it's been holding onto a piece of the city for a long time.

We recently started going to one of their locations outside of Seattle whenever we were in the area. The service remains flawless. It's one of the few butcher shops that consistently deserves a tip but they are always a bit extra! This week, we did a perfect surf & turf : wagyu steak and Chilean sea bass - complete with accompaniments. The fish was flaky and the steak was perfectly seasoned, seared and medium rare. As I was setting up drinks, I was the last one at the table. The steaks were sitting there and everyone had stopped eating. When I asked how it was, I was told "Try it, tell us what you think". I sliced into the steak. It looked amazing. I bit in. BUT afte a chew, I stopped eating it. The beef was definitely 'off' andd spoiled - which explained why no one was eating it. Fortunately, it was surf & turf night so we still had enough to eat. But after paying wagyu prices and lovingly cooking the steak, the disappointment was beyond words. Obviously I will call the store as I want to make sure they pull the remaining inventory from theirr display. At this point, my husband is worried as he had three bites as he presumed the aftertaste was from the truffle sauce I had drizzled. Now, he's worried that he will get sick. I guess time will tell. So FYI --- make sure you check the original dates of the meat before they cut/vaccum seal. Long story short - I hope they read this and review their QA processs to ensure all meats are dated/rotated/stored.
