We recently needed an apartment with a tight turnaround. Through an app which I also recommend Alpacca, I was connected to Daniel Riveria who was able to show me 5 different layouts of an amazing apartment. He was friendly and really let us ask as many questions and also gave us his personal cell as we made our decision. We selected our first apartment and went through the entire process from our cellphone. Dan was also very responsive and even let us know after hours that we could stop stressing because we had been approved for the apartment of our first choice! We are already discussing how when a two bedroom is available in this apartment we will work with Dan to move into it! I am late a day for rent and I have to pay an exorbitant late fee however they withhold my security deposit for a full month after I have moved out. We are in the middle of a pandemic and they are withholding funds of over $2000 dollars from me. When thinking of bottom of the barrel slum lords think Carnegie management! I lived here for 2 years and my living experience was good. Nice building and such and the super was great as well. Whenever we had an issue the super would address it on a timely manner. The amenities, the process to apply for an application and sign the lease was easy/no issue as the representative in charge of leasing was very prompt and responsive via email. HOWEVER, I am giving this management a low rating due to how they handled returning security deposits. My roommates and I cleaned out our unit thoroughly and returned the keys on time. However, it took them OVER 1 MONTH before they returned our deposit! It was absolutely ridiculous why it took them that long to return our deposit. We kept emailing them and calling their office (at times they purposely wouldn't answer) about an update when we'd get our deposit back. NY state law states security deposits are supposed to be returned to tenants within 14 days. This WAS NOT the case. I can see from previous reviews that mine and my roommates' experience are the same. It definitely says something negative about this management. In addition, when we were signing the lease, they did not provide any documentation of an inspection of the place before we were to sign it. Essentially in their contract, when you move out, the contract says that the place has to look as it did before you signed the lease, otherwise they can charge you and remove money from your deposit for any damages they may find in the unit. We were never provided a status/inspection of the condition of our unit before signing the lease. Thankfully, we got our full deposit back without any deductions. But definitely for future reference, ask them for a inspection/updated of the condition of the unit before signing a lease so that way by the time you move out, you have evidence of how the place was before you moved in so they can't charge you for any possible damages that may have occurred before you moved in. Overall, I loved living there but hated how management handled returning our security deposit. read more

I would not recommend renting from this management company. My husband and I paid out last months rent in full, even though we moved out 13 days early. We turned in our keys and cleaned the apartment. We were always respectful tenants who paid rent on time, and management is giving us the run around as to why they have not returned our security deposit of over $3,000! It is now October 12th and we moved out August 18th!! NY state law says that the landlord is required to return the security deposit within 14 days of move-out. I am very disappointed in this management company and am hoping they return our security deposit, however, 55 days after move-out I'm still waiting for our security deposit to be returned to us. WORST MANAGEMENT COMPANY IN NYC. Sent out security deposit over 50 days late after we begged for updates (with no response). Received the check to find out Carnegie deducted over $500 for "trash removal." When asked, they sent us a photo of someone else's trash. Alex Rosenstock is incredibly unprofessional, unresponsive, and unfair. This management company will cheat you during a global pandemic and tell you to take them to court to solve it. Unfortunately, I need to update my review based on my experience with the management of this property. My lease was up on September 30. I moved out well before my final day. I cleaned, paid to have the holes in the wall (from photo frames) repaired and turned in all keys to the building Super. The place was inspected by the new manager and a new tenant moved in...all before 9/30. It is now October 24 and I still have not received my security deposit back after multiple emails. I assume I will, but NY law says 14 days and they have well exceeded that. Poor business practice and poor communication. read more

Overall, I would give them 3.5/5 stars. For about six years, I lived in an East Williamsburg building managed by Carnegie off the Grand St. L stop. This was my first NYC apartment and I was very fortunate, as it was a newly renovated penthouse with several amenities that I took for granted at the time. I have fond memories of this apartment and Carnegie, for the most part, was a reliable management company with some perks. For example, a simple perk I now miss is that you could pay rent online. That's huge! Our building was pretty clean and they made improvements over the years I was there. However, there were some moments in which I was not happy at all with the "luxury" service I was supposed to be getting from Carnegie. Sometimes the super, who was clearly overworked, was not responsive. There was a situation in which our heat was broken during the winter and it wasn't fixed for several weeks. After repeated phone calls and emails to both the super and Carnegie, it was finally fixed. Yet I wouldn't call that luxury service. There was another time in which our hot water wasn't working for several weeks. Both of these situations should have been treated as emergencies and they weren't. Carnegie will also attempt to increase your rent every year. Sure this is pretty standard in NYC, but their rent increase proposals were always ridiculously high. Fight back, create a list of times Carnegie did not deliver/problems with the apartment, and they will eventually settle for a significantly lower increase. This is part of the game between renters and landlords. Additionally, as some have already noted, Carnegie is a Hassidic Jewish company and that does present some communication problems at times, especially during Jewish holidays. Some of the female employees are not the warmest people--but do not take it personally, as it is a cultural/religious reason that they are not outwardly personable. Take the time to learn more about their culture, be a good tenant, and you'll gain respect. But it wasn't until I moved out when I realized how good I had it with Carnegie. The management company who looks after my current apartment is a lot, lot worse. So when I look back, I have to say that Carnegie did their fair share to help us with problems--just don't expect them to go the extra mile. read more

I Lived at 248 McKIbbin (Brooklyn) for 4 years. The place was always well managed and maintained, thanks to Jose the super / handyman and Jack. Loft living but in responsible, clean kind of way. New elevator is legit and clutch during my move. Never any issues with bugs or rodents - they offer a free monthly pest exterminator visit if you so choose. Anytime there was an issue they (usually Debbie) were quick to respond via email or telephone. The roof at 248 is incredible. Some great years in that building thank you. read more

Searching for and finding housing in the Five Boroughs of New York is a dicey business under the best of circumstances. I've made four such searches in 18 years with what I had considered good luck. I needed an apartment fast, and began with Zillow. There I had the good fortune--my best luck yet, really, in dealing with apartments in New York--to encounter Daniel Rivera, an extremely competent, conscientious, and hardworking broker. After an exchange of a couple of dozen texts (on the weekend, incidentally), he had helped me to narrow in on a building in a neighborhood that offered what I sought. Two days after that I was in New York, saw three apartments with Daniel, chose one, and made a good faith deposit. Two days after that, I signed a lease. Daniel was unstintingly generous with his time, wise in his advice, and kind in helping me overcome my ignorance (and yes, fear) of electronic payment methods. If you are looking for an apartment in New York, I cannot recommend Daniel Rivera highly enough. And as long as I'm at it, Carnegie Management, with which Daniel is associated, appears to be an organization similarly equipped with an ethic of competence and engagement with clients. 300 E Washington St. is a very nice place to live. Management really cares about the building and its residents. Maintenance requests get resolved usually by next business day. The property manager is very responsive and helpful. The security guards are so sweet and truly make you feel protected in this building. The underground parking is a plus. read more

I have nothing but great things to say about my experience with Carnegie Management..We previously lived in Manhattan for 6 years, moved back to LA for a year, and missed the City so much that we decided to move back; wanted to try a new location, so moved to Williamsburg. While still living in LA, we found the ad for the 2 BR 2 BA apartment and since we were still in California, worked with the property manager who took pictures of the apartment for us, answered questions, and sent a VISIO layout of the apartment. Was very easy and had the deposit the next few days. Once we made it to NYC, we met the super, Jose, who gave us the keys, garage clicker, etc. We walked and inspected the entire apartment and everything was as advertised and more. Brand new refrigerator, brand new oven. hardwood floors polished, fresh paint, etc.. The super, Jose, manages several other properties and responds to texts and if for examples a lightbulb is out or water filter needs changing or any other issue, he's 100% responsive as is Jack, the manager of property. Both are great and friendly guys to work with should you have an issues which are rare if any. In addition, they keep a camera in the lobby and created a package room a month ago so that we as tenants feel safe. Plus, they hired an onsite porter that comes three days a week to keep the place spotless, hosing the sidewalks, etc. I cant say enough about our experience with Carnegie Management..Even with the L train shutting down next year, we're 100% re-signing with them at the end of the year. I've worked with property managers all over Southern California, Manhattan, and now Brooklyn and I can honestly tell you, none of them come close to the 1st rate service my wife and I have experienced with Carnegie Management. read more

I saw the pretty dismal yelp reviews of Carnegie when I was moving into my first NYC apartment but I thought, "How bad could it be?!" BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD. Yes, Carnegie was pretty responsive when the front door lock was busted and when we had a leak in our ceiling. But when we were moving out? Rather than show the apartment themselves to interested renters they gave away my roommates phone number to random brokers or literally just sent random people to knock at our door and asked to be shown the place. All while we were still living there with MONTHS to go before the end of our lease. We had no idea who these people were but they just sent them to our door for us to do there work for them and try to talk up the place to potential renters (not that there was so so much to talk up.) My roommate was still getting calls/texts from random renters even after we moved out. Not to mention that Carnegie never returned the interest that accumulated on our deposits, as is our legal right. I tried working with Frimmy to get it sorted out and she eventually just stopped answering my calls and emails. My roommates and I never did receive our interest and I can't help but wonder what would have happened if WE had shorted Carnegie $50 while we were there... Oh and did I mention we had cats living in the walls? I couldn't make that up. Stray cats. In the walls of the building. Seriously, don't deal with them if you don't have to. Their apartments are cheap for a reason and they are poorly reviewed for a reason. read more

I have had lived in a loft in Brooklyn managed by Carnegie for the past four years. I have seen them grow into a really respectable management company. Whenever there are problems with the building, Carnegie has responded promptly and with compassion. Our building has a live-in Super who is responsible and hard working. We have a monthly visit by pest control. If something is broken or there is an issue that the Super can't fix, you send an email to Carnegie and their communication and resolution is quick. You can also pay your rent online - which is really convenient. Yes, it is expensive to live in NYC and Carnegie is a business, so your rent will increase every year. It is true they charge $50/month for water. Yes, they are Orthodox Jews, so they will not respond Friday nights/all day Saturdays or on Jewish holidays and they won't shake your hand if you're a woman. If these are the worst problems though, good luck finding better in NYC. When it comes to the important things such as safety and honest business practices, they are top notch. read more
