I am a property owner that has Leiter (supposedly) managing my property. Despite being a paying client for more than ten years, I can no longer get any kind of response from them on even the simplest request. For the past several years, they have had continuous problems with billing where I don't get invoices for the better part of a year and then I suddenly get a threatening email. For several months now I have been trying to get them to confirm that they have the right contact information on my account and they can't even manage to do that. I'm out of state and I have no idea what the status of my renters is or even if they still have keys to my apartment. I've spoken to people in the office, emailed people in the Leiter family...nothing seems to work in reaching these people or getting any sort of response. They also manage my building for the condo association and I plan on advocating for having them replaced. Such incredible incompetence. read more

Lived in an apartment on Grand Street under Leiter for five years, and they never skipped a beat in helping me and my rotating roommates out. If something was wrong they would be fixing it up as soon as possible, and I had roommates switch in and out of the place over the years that they were kind enough to accommodate. I am an owner of a Leiter managed building where the board had decided to engage with Leiter as part of a transition from a self managed building to that taken care of a management company. After a disappointing and dissatisfied year we decided to terminate the agreement. Below are some of the reasons why: - Unfortunately the service is not anywhere near like it's advertised. Response times are mediocre at best. Issues aren't taken care of on time. - We also have been charged for items where costs weren't included in the management agreement or disclosed to us (e.g. If a utility company needed to get access to the building etc). We had to go through a long drawn process to rectify them. - We had to follow up on every single item that needed to get done and never felt like the building was ever "managed". Emails weren't responded to and phone calls not returned. - After a year we weren't able to take care of any projects. - Our accounts was overdrawn several times due to the mismanagement of the accounting department. - It took months to establish a working cleaning service, one of the basic elements of the management agreement. read more

I called Leiter Realty on a whim after passing their sign outside of what looked to be a very nice building in Williamsburg. The broker that answered, Sam Combs, was friendly and asked all the right questions about what type of apartment I was looking for. He said that he would call back in an hour, which he did (highly unusual in the apartment search!), and immediately took to me see an amazing apartment in Greenpoint at a great price. I ended up not being able to take the apartment because I was offered a job with free rent as a perk, but my former potential room mate ended up taking the apartment himself. Throughout the whole process, Sam was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, accommodating, flexible, and understanding. Apartment hunting in New York is a hellish process, and Sam and Leiter Realty were truly a breath of fresh air. He is definitely who I will call first when I'm on the hunt again! read more

I had a wonderful experience with Leiter Realty! I worked directly with Sam Combs and he found the perfect place for me. Before showing me anything, he asked pertinent questions relevant to NYC living..."give me your dream apartment" and "give me what you're willing to compromise on." There was no skirting any issues, no empty promises. He was very up front about the reality of apartment hunting and what is available. Well, I ended up getting it all! For small to medium size buildings they are pretty much the only game in town and so we are stuck They have been our building management company for about four years and I can not recommend them as our experience has been beyond horrible. Don't expect the property manager to return your call or email. Have yet to get them on the phone when calling. I even reached out to David Leiter to see if we could fix the communication gap only to have him pun me to his Director of Operations who at best was simply defensive - when I tracked down to the office to talk with her since she never called. Very slow to fix issues. We had a broken elevator in our building for over 3 weeks and they blamed the maintenance company but didn't even notify the maintenance company of the issues as the property manager was busy on vacation. If you can avoid them do yourself a favor and find some one else. UPDATE: After I left this review as well as a length note on our building list serve, David Leiter contacted me and has worked very hard on trying to resolve the issues that I had. DAVID spend his whole weekend trying to figure out how to resolve the situation we were in and followed up with employees to make sure that next time the results are different. At this time we are def on the right track. As much as I am appreciate and am thankful for David's help I also wish he would have stepped in sooner when I had originally contacted him. This situation would have probably never reached the point it had and therefore I think the rating is closer to 3.5. read more

We used them for several years. They started out great, but we went through at least four different property managers. They overload their people with too many buildings, so they can't do a good job. Emails aren't returned. Phone calls aren't returned. They have high employee turnover. The only plus is they have a really good finance guy, Paul. Their fee isn't terrible, but they add a lot of extra costs to vendor fees and other fees you don't realize. If you're a smaller building, and/or you have urgent issues, I definitely wouldn't recommend them. The property management service is not good. read more

I am the treasurer of my condominium. I requested a quote from Leiter for managing my property. After a few days Maria began corresponding with me via email and we spoke via telephone once. I was very honest about the financial condition of my condominium and Maria told me she would send a quote and email me links to review how they manage properties. I never received anything. Maria told me to feel free to contact her and I did twice inquiring about the quotes and website links. That was almost 1 month ago and to date I still haven't heard from her or the company. Avoid! Terrible service to buyers; the reason their apartments take so long to sell is because the staff are rude / unhelpful! These people need a major lesson in customer service, if not basic politeness. I was a cash buyer, made an appointment to view properties, and not only did the agent (Ian Katz) forget about the appointment, he decided he then couldn't be bothered to go all the way to the Upper West Side to show the apartment he had said we would view. And when I asked about rentals, he said, "oh, you'll have to check our website". read more

Let me preface by saying this happened close to a year ago, but I held back from posting anything about it because I thought it might hurt my chances of getting any of my money back, now, close to a year later, I know the $4,200 my roommate and I put down on the apt is gone for good, so here goes. Long story short - we signed on a lease which started December 1st. When signing the lease, we were given a sheet by the broker guaranteeing "no record of bed bug infestations in the past year." When we began moving in (on November 30th) we found two bed bugs within 2 hours of moving in. My understanding is that though the laws on bed bugs are new, it is illegal to rent out apartments with bed bug infestations. We reported it to our landlord and left the apartment immediately. We never stayed a night in the apartment which our landlord still has our first month's rent and security deposit for ($1,400 each) and resorted to crashing on friend's couches and subletting in another place to have a healthy place to live. The landlord sent the incorrect kind of exterminator twice (more or less a roach exterminator) and the issue was never approached correctly or taken care of. We have been told various laws: that the landlord has a week to a month to take care of the issue, it wasn't. Because our landlord was a hot head who denied there was an issue, and refused to give any of our money back, our broker made a verbal agreement with the landlord to get us out of the lease. The agreement was that if he re-rented the apartment by January 1st we would get our security deposit back and get out of the lease but lose the first month's rent. This of course, seemed insanely immoral and illegal, but with no money for a lawyer and no free representation from the BAR Association (from being above the poverty line) we felt we had no choice. We had to at least try to get some of our money back and do whatever we could to get out of this horrible situation. After a month and a half of angry threatening phone calls and sleeping on our friend's floors, the apartment was eventually rented out to another two guys, but we never got any of our money back as promised. We found out through our neighbor from the building we had stayed in touch with after moving out (they also had a tremendous amount of issues with the landlord both bed bug and non-bed bug related. The two new tenants apparently moved out within 3 days as well, and were planning to take the landlord to court. We also sent multiple letters threatening lawsuits against our landlord, both from us and lawyers we met with, but he never responded. Eventually when it came apparent that our land lord was not going to give us any of our money back and that it would probably cost just as much or more to go to court, we backed off, happy to at least be out of the lease. We then asked Leiter Realty for our broker fee back. Our broker told us "I can't give it back, I can only apply it to other apartment rentals". After going back and forth quite a bit, we eventually threatened a lawsuit on our Leiter broker as well, he went back and forth for a while with our lawyer and he eventually agreed to give $900 back out of $1,400. Our lawyer took $200 of it, so long story short out of $2,100 we each originally put down, my roommate and I both got $350 back from the apartment we never stayed a night in - not the mention that massive amount of other costs that come along with a nightmare like this. After putting all of my savings down on this apartment, I was forced to leave the city, and my roommate has still not found a permanent place to stay. There are a million details I have skipped over, but let's just sum it up as the worst moving experience of my life. It gets me angry just thinking about it and writing this up, so I'm going to end it here. So, would I say look elsewhere for apartment? Yes, that would probably be a good idea, unless you want months of sleepless nights, aggressive phone calls, lawsuits and crashing on your friend's floors GO ELSEWHERE. read more

Leiter has been a huge disappointment for our building. They make big promises about responsiveness and communication and yet their responsiveness has been the worst I've seen. On several occasions I have had to follow up multiple times to get any kind of service. Emails go unanswered, calls go on unaddressed and small issues take months to get resolved. They have had a lot of turnover which means several different property managers, none of which are well versed on the challenges of your building. Their use of Basecamp is annoying and disruptive & has resulted is tenant arguments and confusion as to how to get anything done. If you are in the market for a new management company, keep looking. Leiter will only disappoint and frustrate you. read more

I have a restaurant on the south side of Williamsburg in a building that is managed by Lieter Management. Recently there was a gas leak due to some work being done on the roof. Lieter had the gas company, a plumber and inspector on site immediately. They resolved the issue saving my business from having to close over the weekend. Most importantly Zach and Adam were in constant communication with me so I could update my staff as to what was going on so they could plan accordingly. I have had experience with many management companies and Lieter is by far the most hands on. read more

I am also a real estate broker and have done deals in their buildings and was always happy with their service as a broker. When I took them on, David Leiter, who owns the company personally came to my building and they gave us a very competitive rate, working with them and a super they provided us. Leiter is super responsive, which is the way I run my own business. They get things done immediately too and provide great service along with excellent referrals when a professional is needed. In response to Rohit B.'s comment, I argue, in fact, the company is not as he assumed. My case? Firstly, as an actual tenet of David Leiter's management company, never in the past 8 years of NYC apartments have I received even an ounce of the attention and kindness this company deploys in their dealings of operations. They have always made me feel as if I were home and resolve my issues expediently. Not only this, but David himself contacted me, shooting advice and tips via email, while I underwent an atrocious roommate situation. Secondly, Rohit was an applicant attempting a takeover of my lease and he claims I made the place seem like it was already his but he had never placed a deposit or finished/submitted an application. Anyone in NYC knows this is not how apartments work. Also after this, he then goes into the management office, after I have made him aware he is no longer the person I want taking over my lease, decides to threaten David and others with a nasty review. Thus, I conclude that the only thing nasty, lazy, and rude is, in fact, the way in which people use Yelp as a tool to threaten companies when they themselves are truly the ones we should 'Stay away" from. read more
