    Guac and Chips
    John J.

Tried out this place on the Junction strip on north side. Heard good things about it from others. Mexican/Salvadorian mix of food. Food (3.25/5) - Guacamole and Chips (3.75/5) - tasty guac mix with good balance and flavour. Chips were kinda average overall. Good but not Playa Cabana level. - Plato Mixto (3/5) - sounded good but was kinda average. Steak was a bit too fatty, chicken was average moist and shrimp ok. Just overall lacked taste for seasoning too. - Grilled Steak, Carnitas Tacos (3/5) - once again a bit on the bland side and the shells were like pupusas so on the dry side. Service (4.5/5) - very friendly, attentive and cheerful. Checked in multiple times on drinks, water, satisfaction. Atmosphere (3.5/5) - it's got this authentic salvadorian diner feel to it... spartan with charm. Average cleanliness feel to it. Overall (3.75/5) - I was excited to try it out and wanted it to be higher based on the service but found the food pretty average, even if cheaper than Playa.

FOOD: I've been craving quesa-birria tacos for a while and I finally had the opportunity to try them at Carmelitas. They not only met but exceeded my expectations. The tacos were delicious and the birria dip was tasty and flavourful. My only complaint is pulled beef - something I'm not a fan of. I would have preferred beef strips or chicken. SERVICE: Fantastic service. No complaints whatsoever. The ladies working there are courteous and friendly. If you like their service, please consider leaving a tip. AMBIANCE: This place is in need of a reno, I'll be honest. The interior looks extremely dated. I get it, the restaurant business is a low-margin business and after all the overhead expenses, there isn't much left for a reno. Let's put it this way, this place is great for a quick bite, but not ideal for a date.

Our group of 5 wanted brunch, but it was hard to find a table on Sunday at noon. Carmelita's had space and we decided a Mexi-brunch would suit us fine. The restaurant offers both Mexican and Salvaorean favorites (tacos, burritos, chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, tamales, pupusas, etc.). I went with the pupusas - one pork and cheese, and one pork and beans. They were great - not as greasy as some I've had. The corn flavour was on point and there was a generous amount of filling. The pupusas came with the usual coleslaw and tomato sauce, plus a slightly spicier sauce. I needed more coleslaw and we were given some extra. Prices are great for pupusas, between $3.75 and $4.75 each, depending on how many fillings. Others tried the chilaquiles, huevos rancheros, and tacos (plates were around $12-$15 each). Everyone enjoyed their meal. While we waited for breakfast, we ordered one Canadian Coke and one Mexican Coke for the table, got several glasses and did a blind taste test (Mexican Coke is sweetened with cane sugar - it's worth trying to detect the difference). It was fun - I recommend it. There are Mexican beers available, Mexican Coke, Jarritos pops and other drinks, plus coffee. The interior is relaxed, cheerful, low-key, and so are the staff. Recommend this place!

Absolutely Delicious + very authentic feel (and taste!) After a long day of photo shoots (who knew they'd make you so hungry!) we stopped in here for an early dinner. Everything looked amazing and a huge bonus for most of the options available with corn tortillas. The service was amazing .. attentive, pleasant and overall a great experience. The ceviche was fresh (we had the mix of fish and shrimp), the guacamole was SO good and we were also as impressed with the quesadillas and tacos. We will definitely revisit this spot and wouldn't hesitate to recommend!!

Delicious!!! Pozole soup with homemade tortillas, chorizo tacos, guacamole, pupusas with bean & cheese. Gracias Carmelitas

Got skip the dishes and I always want leftovers, so I got my favs. Pozole soup with homemade tortillas, side guac, pupusas with cheese and bean, and chorizo tacos. So amazing and can't wait to reorder. Support small business!

I tried Carmelita's for the first time today, I was really excited but left really disappointed. They have chips and guacamole on the menu but I don't like guacamole so I asked to switch it to salsa and the lady said of course. I was a little surprised because it was a tiny amount of salsa but the price did not change at all. I confirmed with her as I was leaving that it was just salsa and she said yes, but when I got to work I realized I was given salsa AND guacamole, which is nice I guess but not what I wanted and not really fair for the price since I'm not going to touch that guac. the bag of chips was good but almost empty when I got it. I was charged almost $16. I will add the pic if I can but I'm not sure how (I added the pic, that is literally how empty it was when I got it.) The salsa was kinda odd too... I spent 2x what I would have at the Junction Grill and am still hungry. :( It would have been one star if not for the nice staff, crazy price for a very small amount of food. I won't be going there again.

Soup, looking plain as day, minus the added toppings of avocado and cilantro.

What a wonderful surprise!…read more Being an unclaimed business with only one review, there were questions about whether or not this would be successful or worthwhile. The process of ordering felt strange. I thank the previous reviewer who recommended going to the Facebook page for more information. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063964563481&mibextid=ZbWKwL I reached out via WhatsApp and asked what was available to order & how this process works. Roberto was SUPER nice, talking me through the process of ordering, payment (via Zelle, Venmo, or CashApp), and pickup. My options for yesterday were seven different pupusas: Chicharrón y queso (pork and cheese), Revueltas (mix: pork, beans, cheese), Frijol y queso (beans and cheese), Solo de queso (only cheese), Camarón y queso (shrimp and cheese), Loroco y queso (Loroco and cheese), and Jalapeño y queso (Jalapeño and cheese). My friend doesn't like shrimp, but I ordered 2 of each anyway LOL We shared the rest and ate our fill - with leftovers to spare! I wasn't sure what Loroco was, so I even learned something new... According to preparedcooks.com, Loroco is a green unopened flower bud. It is quite popular for its use in sauces, stews, and soups. The flower comes from a herbaceous vine known as Fernaldia pandurata, and you can find between 8 and 18 flowers on each plant. Loroco has a very distinctive taste. It tastes like most greens but combined with overtones of nuts. It has an earthy-artichoke flavor to accompany the overtones of nuts. The taste of loroco is best described as a cross between squash and mild broccoli. My friend & I were both pleasantly surprised by the light flavor. We were given a fresh & delicious side to top our pupusas with called curtido. According to TastesBetterFromScratch.com, Curtido is a Salvadoran cabbage slaw or relish made with finely shredded cabbage, red onion, carrot, oregano, and vinegar. House of Pupusas makes their curtido with pickled jalapeños instead of onion - delightful! We also were treated to salsa roja, made with tomatoes, onion, jalapeño, and garlic. The salsa roja was thinner than I expected - more like gazpacho than a traditional salsa - but super tasty just the same. I've only got one photo to show you, because we were so busy "oohing", "aahing", and shoveling all the food into our faces - after deciding which pupusa to try first. While this is my first try of pupusas, I recently also tried an arepa for the first time. Arepas are thick pockets of masa and MUCH heavier than a pupusa. I think I prefer a pupusa because you have a more even distribution of filling to "pocket". The only caveat to this amazing place is that there's no eat-in option. They offer takeaway or delivery. I chose to pick up my order so we could enjoy our meal by the Outer Harbor. Other than loud seagulls and a bit of a breeze, we had the BEST food and a wonderful time catching up. I'm excited to see House of Pupusas grow and flourish. Perhaps they'll open a food truck in the near future. If they do, I'll be first in line ready to tackle another order of EVERYTHING.

Since I had never been before I wanted to get the combination plate. I opted for a pupusa, 2 tacos, and an enchilada. For each, I just asked for whichever filling/meat was most popular and what the restaurant would recommend which was the pork. The tacos have two options for topping and I went for #1 which was lettuce, pico de gallo, cilantro, sour cream, and avocado (a thin guacamole rather than pieces). The tacos were good. They looked even better. They came with 2 tortillas each so it was sturdy enough to hold the fillings. The pupusa was nice but not my favourite. I ended up dipping it in the hot salsa and it was nicer. My absolute favourite was the enchilada. It was not what you would expect of a Mexican enchilada, but is instead a Salvadoran enchilada which is very similar to a tostada. That was great! Overall, the food was good. I'd love to return to dine in person because I think it would be amazing in person. Usually takeout is never the same. Hopefully once the lockdown ends I can return and have an even better experience!

We put in an order for Chicharon appetizer, bean and pork cheese pupusas. There is a side of garnishes, mild and hot sauce which we were recommended to try both. The pupusas were good, with the pork one standing out just a bit more in taste, but I wouldn't recommend the bean one (and neither do the locals). The Chicharon fried pork belly with nachos were great and a must have as a shareable appetizer with friends.

Both the food and the beverages were loka! Would be a regular if I lived closer. Pupusa - Beans with cheese - The pupusas are served with a coleslaw of sorts (yellowish, not creamy), a tomato based sauce and a hot sauce. Each of these sauces come very flavourful but together mix well to bring out the flavours of the pupusas. Ultimately, will have to play around to figure out which ratio works best for you. The beans and cheese pupusa was tasty, the two textures blended well and was augmented by the salsas. I only wished the pupusa exterior was crispier. Pupusa - Pork with cheese - In contrast to the beans and cheese pupusa, these were more crispy. Probably because the oils released from the pork made it crisp up a bit more. Unfortunately, I didn't like this one as much because it lacked the creaminess that came from the beans. Might have to try the supreme flavour to get the three fillings. Platano con crema - Perfectly caramelized plantains! I am not a sour cream person, so I skipped the cream, but the plantains by themselves were soft and delicious. Yuca con chicharron - Yuca fries are my favourite form of fries; slightly sweet, fluffy inside and crispy outside. These yuca fries had all these characteristics! Unfortunately, the chicharron was over fried, resulting in chewy, dry pieces of pork. Tamarindo - Lots of tangy tamarind flavour and served in a huge cup. Works well to cut the more fatty and oily foods like fries or the pork Pupusas. Horchata - Milky roasted rice drink was delicious as well. It had lots of roasted rice flavour, but it was also a bit too sweet for myself. Would still recommend to try.
