Searched the CarMax website for a few weeks to find the car matching the year, make, model, color and features our family wanted. It was in Arizona however. Had it transferred to CarMax Torrance for a nominal fee and a representative had walked us through the process for purchase and kept us up-to-date as to when the vehicle would reach their location. When the car arrived, it was inspected over a few days then prepared for pick up at a certain time. There was a slight issue with the paperwork where another representative had made a typo which caused a delay in pick-up. Had to wait for a few hours for the documentation to be redone. But when all the forms had been completed and approved, we were able to drive off. Despite the hiccup during the first attempt to accept the car, the professionalism shown by the staff was exemplary. Buying a car there was one thing I worked with Patrick and he was amazing. He wasn't there the day. I finally picked up my car as it came from another location so I had somebody else and that did not go as well. But Patrick did the main part. Two major things the first thing is the tires looked bad , I brought the card to my mechanic because I had that first trial period to bring it back if anything needed to be fixed and I told him I didn't like the tires that didn't look safe and he completely agreed. Carmax told me they were at the minimum safe range and they refused to give me new used tires so I had to buy four new tires a couple months later. Secondly, my other issue is that you cannot get in touch with the repairs department- you literally just have to walk in there. Then an oil change I thought was very cost-effective through them, but even with an appointment, it takes three or four hours so I've decided to go back to oil stop where they check everything. They specialize in changing oil and it may be more expensive but at least I'm in and out in a reasonable amount of time and I don't have to get an Uber from Carmax or sit there for four hours. The last time I got my oil change I mentioned that my trunk was getting stuck. It's electric and it was getting stuck close and stuck open so they said they checked and everything was fine but that night and the next day my car wouldn't start. The battery was not catching when I would try to start it. And finally two days later of this and not be able to start my car at one point I ended up having to call AAA and my battery was dead and I had to get a new battery. It looked like it was the original battery that was in the car. My car is a 2021. Initially, I made sure that all the connections were good because it just started after I had them change the oil and check the electric trunk.-I brought it to the garage so they could check all the connections cause it was acting like something was loose. So I don't really know what they did to check the trunk or if they check electronics or if they do anything with the battery but it just seem coincidental. But again moving forward, I won't bring it back there for an oil change and I would recommend that you make sure you get somebody who actually cares about you and answers your questions and like I said Patrick he's young, but he's so knowledgeable and he was so good. He just wanted to try to get me a car. He never pushed me and I didn't feel like I was working with a sleazy car salesman. read more

Price they offered was fair and the process was seamless. They require the title and vehicle registration to complete the sale. If you have only 1 key they will adjust the price down. Luckily we had both so not sure what the adjustment would be. If 2 owners are on the title with an "or", then just 1 person needs to sign off. Car Max will handle all the DMV paperwork. I went there twice to get their estimate on my cars, it's as straight forward and easy as you'd expect from what they're known for. Most used car dealers ask their potential selling customers to get a Carmax estimate before they make offers, I see why now. Because CarMax gave low end offers. The first car they offered $40,000, I sold it two weeks later at $50,000 with three committed buyers, I took the one came with cashier's checks from the same bank I use, and rest in cash, willing to meet at my bank to verify and deposit them before I sign off the pink slip. The second car they offered $11,000, I sold it the next day at $17,500 with two committed buyers, I took the one came with cash in his wife's purse and willing to meet at my bank to use the bank's machine to count bills. I fully understand most people are unwilling to go through the process to sell their own cars, as some people think the lines at Costco gas station is too long for them to save $0.90~$1.00 a gallon. If I could give it a zero, I would!!! We purchased a car back in March. When you buy a car from CarMax, you get 10 days to decide if you want to keep the car. We got the car on Friday and took it to our mechanic for an inspection first thing Saturday morning. As we were driving home from picking up our daughter, we noticed a burning smell. Now, CarMax promises a 125-point inspection of your vehicle. We had the car delivered from Victorville so it was supposed to have been inspected in Victorville and again when it arrived at Torrance. During the inspection, my mechanic called me into the bay to show me an issue. The car had a major oil leak in the crankshaft and one other part. The burning smell was the oil heating up under the car as we drove . The amount of oil on the crankshaft cover revealed that there was no way this car had been inspected or if they did inspect it, nothing was done about it which is worse. This issue would have been impossible to miss in any inspection. I, immediately, took the car straight to the CarMax service center but it was closed on the weekend. The leak was so problematic that our mechanic recommended not driving the car. So, the car sat in my driveway all day Saturday and Sunday. I called the service center first thing Monday morning and the first day they could get me in was Wednesday. So, the car sat in the driveway for another three days. Finally, I went in on Wednesday to take the car in. At that point, the car was not going to be ready until Friday. This would mean that I would not be able to drive the car 7 out of the 10 day try out, at minimum. BTW, the car was not ready on Friday. So, my wife and I simply asked for an extension of the 10 trial period. The issue was obviously not our fault because it was either missed or ignored during the inspection. This does not seem like an unreasonable ask. At first, we were told no problem. Then, they changed it to a 3 day trial. Eventually, they decided not to extend the 10-day trial at all. It was a horrible experience accompanied with flat out lies from CarMax. I would recommend avoiding them like the plague. Side note: There was a woman in the service center experiencing a problem with her car's transmission going out. She had only had the car for a few days. read more

I purchased a vehicle from CarMax in Torrance in June 2024 and brought it back shortly after because the brakes felt unsafe and made loud, concerning noises. I told the service staff I didn't feel safe driving the car, but they dismissed me and claimed the noise was "normal" for recently replaced brakes. I was ignored, talked over, and completely disrespected. I took the car to a certified brake technician who told me the condition was extremely dangerous and I should not have been driving it at all. I ended up having to pay out of pocket to replace the brakes and rotors myself. CarMax not only sold me a defective car, but when I came back to report the issue, they failed to take any responsibility and ignored a clear safety concern. I felt taken advantage of, disrespected, and unsafe. I would never recommend buying a car from this location, and I'm currently pursuing legal action because of how poorly this situation was handled. I saw a vehicle at the carmax website in Torrance on Saturday October 4. I filled out the pre qualification. All looked good. I reserved an appointment to go look at it the next afternoon as Saturday was too late since I would have been coming from Corona. At 7 pm I got a call that the vehicle was not available. Somebody else got it. I was disappointed. This would've been my second time coming to a carmax as the first turned out to be faulty so they did a buyback. Fast forward to Tuesday October 7. The car was reserved for me to look at. I looked at this on my account. I had made an appointment to go see another vehicle after I had put in the request to see this second vehicle from Palmdale to Ontario. Turned out they sold it and didn't tell me until I got to my appointment. Communication is horrible at all carmaxs. I highly recommend you take your money elsewhere. My time and money was wasted this time and the last 17 months dealing with a faulty vehicle from the Irvine carmax. I'm happy I went elsewhere and bought another beautiful vehicle. My family has repeatedly sold autos at Carmax and they really have the process fine tuned- it's amazing how easy it is to work with them. Twice, we have worked with Alma as the person who handles the paperwork, and she's SOOO easy to work with and talented. You should try to know the value of your car, the amount you want, and realize that you will receive a lower amount than if you were to sell it directly to an individual, but you are saving yourself the hassle factor. If you trade your auto in when you purchase another auto, the dealer will usually lowball you, so it is a good idea to have an offer from Carmax in your pocket if you want to try to trade your vehicle in. Or just deal with Carmax and give them the car rather than haggling with the dealer, which simplifies things. It's best to have them physically inspect the vehicle before you trust that your offer is good. If they find a condition that you don't know about or didn't reveal, the offer can change. Don't get mad if this happens, this is the reality of the auto selling world, nothing personal!! For instance, they have flagged frame damage where there was no known damage, or paint work where there was no paint work, but we don't always know what has happened to our vehicles even prior to them being sold as new to us. They see what they see and base their offer on their assessments, take it or leave it. Once you have a price from them, you can check them against competitors. There are a handful, try one or two so that you can validate that their offer is good. The majority of the time, their offer has been the best, however, there can be exceptions, so it is good to take a look at other options. The competitors may like the car more because they work with different types of buyers, and some value the condition of the auto more than the mileage, or vice versa, or are looking for certain vehicles. The process of turning in your car takes less than an hour. They even gave me a Lyft home. Talk about easy! Easy and pleasant. read more

Purchased a car that is going back for the 3rd time to correct a problem their service department is struggling to repair. We Rented a car while it was again being serviced for an extended period and we now find that Car Max will NOT reimburse us the rental fee because they say they offer a loaner. However, the Service Manager never OFFERED but the . Sales Manager Luis said "customers are to ask for a loaner". So, in a customer service business they don't know how to be proactive and ask their customer if they need a loaner. Buyers should be sure to ask all relevant questions about their purchase because this current sales team and its manager do not disclose all available options unless a customer inquires. CarMax Is an Absolute Nightmare - Stay FAR Away! If you're thinking about buying a car from CarMax, RUN in the opposite direction. This has been, hands down, the worst car-buying experience imaginable, filled with deception, incompetence, and a total lack of accountability. We purchased a vehicle from CarMax on Friday evening, 3/7, expecting a reliable car that had supposedly gone through their 125-point inspection--not once, but twice. First at the Victorville CarMax dealership, and then again at the Torrance location, where the car was transferred. That turned out to be a complete joke because our trusted mechanic immediately deemed the car undriveable due to major repair issues, including: -Severe oil leaks from the timing cover and front crankshaft seal -A failing drive belt and tensioner -Bad spark plugs -A dirty, clogged air filter -Total estimated repair cost: $2,000 The Nightmare Begins: -We purchased the car on Friday evening, 3/7, thinking we were buying a well-inspected, road-ready vehicle. -On Saturday morning, 3/8, we took the car to our trusted mechanic, who immediately told us the car was undriveable and needed major repairs. -My husband drove the car straight back to CarMax that same morning, only to be told he could not return the car for repairs because their repair shop was closed on weekends. So, the undriveable car sat in our driveway all weekend. -We were told to call first thing Monday morning. My husband called as soon as they opened on Monday, 3/10, and was then told there were no available appointments until Wednesday, 3/12--meaning we were forced to wait even longer for repairs for an undriveable car. -We brought the car in on Wednesday, 3/12 for repairs, with a promise that it would be fixed by Friday, 3/14--that didn't happen. -After chasing them down (because they certainly weren't updating us), we were told it wouldn't be ready until Monday, 3/17, then on Monday we were told it would be ready by the end of the day Tuesday, 3/18, and then suddenly on Tuesday, they needed yet another part that wouldn't even arrive until the next day. Returning the Car & The Customer Service Disaster: Fed up with their endless incompetence, we ended up returning the car on Tuesday, 3/18, when the 10-day money-back guarantee expired--because even after all this time, the car STILL wasn't repaired. On top of that, I traded in my old car to CarMax, leaving me without a vehicle in the meantime. But it gets worse. After filing a formal complaint with CarMax Customer Relations on Friday, 3/21, I was contacted by an assessor named Maria on Monday, 3/23. She told me she would look into the case and get back to me within 24 hours. Did she? No. By Wednesday, 3/25, after hearing nothing, I reached out via phone and email--no response. I tried again on Friday morning, 3/27. That afternoon, I finally received an email (not even a phone call) from Maria saying she had supposedly "tried calling me twice" (I had no missed calls, no messages) and then I was told CarMax would do nothing to correct their mistakes. When we first contacted CarMax about our situation, salesman Henry promised us that the senior manager, Sonia, had agreed to provide us with a new 10-day money-back guarantee for the car. After everything that had gone wrong, we were still willing to work with them and even agreed to this offer. But in the end, they refused to follow through with it. Originally, I was still willing to work with them. I even offered to: -Keep the same car if they gave me a new 10-day trial period. (They refused.) -Return and repurchase the car if they lowered the price so I could buy an extended warranty. (They refused.) -Buy a similar car for the same price as the one they sold me in horrible condition. (They refused.) Despite everything being entirely their fault, they offered me ZERO compensation, ZERO solutions--yet still had the nerve to ask if I wanted to buy another car from them. My husband and I are simple, hardworking people who were willing to be patient and understanding throughout this entire ordeal, but we were treated terribly. Shame on salesman Henry, sales manager Jesus, service repair manager Anthony, senior manager Sonia, and customer relations assessor Maria--none of whom did anything to make this right. Every person I spoke to in the chain of events apologized, admitted fault, some even made false promises....but ultimately nothing was done to correct the wrong. CarMax does not stand behind their vehicles and does not value their customers. Their customer service is a joke. They will waste your time, give you the runaround, and leave you with nothing but frustration. Do yourself a favor--go somewhere else. I truly wish I could give less than one star. read more
