So I did a ton of research on what vehicle would be a good fit for my family. Entered the search on Carmax and whenever I got a notification that one fit my criteria, I checked it out online. Finally found one that looked perfect. Went in and took it for a test drive and bought it...easy peasy. 3 stars. However, as someone that has spent my professional life training sales and service. ..it was lacking from Carmax. The person I was initially supposed to meet handed me off to someone else. That sales person was clearly just going through the motions. No connection, no attempt to find out our needs and why that particular vehicle was desirable...nothing. it amounted to here it is, here are the options. If I was shopping and had not done so much research before walking in the door, I would never have bought. Further, I emailed both guys the next day with a question. 2 days after that with no response, I called to get an answer. Not good. If you are looking for a vehicle, do your homework first and know what you need and want...they won't do much to serve you...very transactional only business. read more

I have been dealing with this CarMax location for a few years I bought my Porsche 911 in 2006 and the car was immaculate and the price was very fair. They were very good at taking care of my car for the first 1 month. Then there was my 1997 Honda Prelude. I have a transmission failure and they bought it from me for more than I had expected. My parents bought a Honda oddessy from them and decided that the car was too big for them and returned it to CarMax without any problem at all. I just bought my Honda S2000 from them and the whole experience was great. The speaker had a rattle, which CarMax fixed within a couple of days. I am buying my futures cars from them from now on. read more

I went to CarMax of Fayetteville with a preapproved 40k from Capitol, once I got to the office, I was greeted by someone else other than the person that I was talking to, I gave her all the information and informed her to that I was preapproved for the vehicle (GMC Arcadia), which she brought to me and I got a chance to test drive the vehicle and said I want to get the it, this is where things went down hill, remember I am already preapprove with capitol, they ran my credit again and again and again, hard runs, then the sales person comes back and said I could not get the vehicle and said do I want to make different arrangements I said NO and she tossed me my papers, I left because I knew I was approved already. went to Rick Hendricks of Fayetteville gave them the approved loan and with in 1 hour drove away with a brand new vehicle, CarMax of Fayetteville is not the place and is defiantly not customer friendly. read more

The buying experience was pleasant but the service portion left a lot to be desired. Some of the issues I have had they can never track down and the ones they did address were corrected poorly. Also, the vehicle was damaged from transit between their locations and their "resolution" was less than ideal. read more

I went to get my routine car check up on the vehicle which I had bought from Carmax, when they brought my car back, there were several scratches on the driver door. When I pointed that to them and asked where these scratches came from, they denied and said the scratches existed before. After few hours trying to prove to the tech and management over and over, they still did not accept the responsibility and the fact that the scratches occurred on their watch. The only thing they did was to put a little matching paint on the scratches but that really did not cover it and the strip on the door must be replaced. This whole experience with Carmax service department not only took many hours of my husband's and my time (in person and on the phone), but it gave us so much stress and unpleasant experience with this company. We would not recommend them at all after this. read more

We didn't have a good experience at this Carmax and they lost our business. We wanted to buy a 2012 Yaris hatchback and found one in their inventory. Scheduled a test drive, which went well. But we test drove a 2009, and by the time we got there, they had a 2012 on the lot as well. We test drove the 2012 and decided immediately to buy it. Went inside to do the paperwork, but then the salesman said "Just a minute..." and left the office. He came back 10 minutes later and told us we had missed that car by 20 minutes. Someone else had bought it. That sounded a little fishy to us, since we had just had the car out for a test drive. But we accepted it and left. Two days later, my Carmax alert popped up with a 2012 Yaris on the Dulles Carmax lot! Amazingly, it was a 2-door silver hatchback, had 37,000 miles on it and two previous owners, JUST EXACTLY LIKE THE CAR WE TEST DROVE 2 DAYS PRIOR. So I reserved the car on Sunday afternoon for a test drive on Tuesday morning. When we arrived Tuesday morning, they were not ready for us (our sales consultant was no where to be found), and they found someone else to take us out on the lot to the car. Problem was .... we couldn't find the car! Finally, after much conferring with his manager, he came back to us to say that the car had been sold on Sunday. BUT, he said, we have plenty of other cars for you to look at! (Of course, no 2012 Yaris's). It sounded like bait and switch to us, and we left in disgust. We will not ever do business with this Carmax again! Two days later, I found a 2012 Yaris through Carfax.com at a certified Toyota used car dealer, and we bought it the next day. End of story. read more

I have purchased cars and sold cars at Carmax multiple times. I have always had a very positive experience. (Except the time I wanted to buy a Prius and none of the Priuses on the lot would start.... I bought one elsewhere. Loved that car. Sold it at Carmax.) This time, however, so many things went wrong. I was upfront about the fact that I was exporting the vehicle. (The State Dept would be handling ALL the shipping details--not Carmax.) Yet, it was only the day I arrived to test drive and write a check for the vehicle that I was told that Carmax was required to do a background check on me because I was exporting. They did try to be accommodating by asking the person who does that to do it on a weekend, since I had not been informed in advance.) But then it got worse when they found out that, due to the country I was exporting to, they had to run the sale by the Carmax legal department. Another delay that was unexpected. But, once all that was worked out, I went back to write a check and drive the car away. Except apparently in all the hullabaloo about the export, the fact that there was an outstanding recall on the car was lost until I was literally writing the check. (And as I found out the next day when I called the dealership to ask for the recall to be taken care ASAP, there are no parts available for 6 weeks. And as I had to travel to my onward assignment, I had to ship the car without that being taken care of.) BUT the worst thing of all was that, although there was no smell whatsoever when I test drove the car, the day after I drove it home there was a HORRIBLE SMELL OF CIGARETTES! At that point, the shipper was coming to pick up the car, I had to report to work in this other country, and I couldn't possibly return the car AND find another car in the short time I had before departure. SO, for several reasons, you can understand why I will not go back to Carmax 1) they sold a car that reeked of cigarette smoke, and hid it. 2) they sold a car without being sure I knew there was an unresolved recall. 3) They were not well-versed enough in the regs about export to inform me upfront about what was necessary. But that cigarette smell... UNFORGIVABLE! read more

Purchasing a vehicle here was a breeze, and the sales rep was responsive, friendly, and helpful. The Service Dept, however, was very frustrating. I took my new vehicle to my own service company for a full evaluation. Sure enough, the vehicle needed a small list of things done - including an alignment, which was surprising- but hey, I figured I'd drop it back off to CarMax, get it all taken care of, and have my repaired vehicle back within the week. I bought it for myself for Christmas and dropped it off to them on 12/18 so I was looking forward to having my vehicle back in time for my holiday vacation. Well, long story short, I did not get my vehicle back until 1/10. Not because the repairs were difficult but because they repeatedly got the wrong parts in from the dealer (they were "shipped" from Sterling to Dulles, arrived only at 3:30p each day, and the service techs didn't bother to actually drive to the dealer to ensure they were the correct parts until I recommended it around the 4th time it happened). Also, they don't work weekends and the one tech they had assigned to repair my vehicle took his own holiday vacation so they didn't let someone else work on the vehicle. Eventually I got my Christmas present a couple weeks late and the service rep was friendly, even when I started cussing around Week 3, but I feel like a lot of this delay could have been avoided by implementing some basic policies about avoiding a "shipment" of multiple wrong parts and assigning a backup tech to work the repairs if no one is going to work weekends. read more

Just had the most terrible experience! After searching online for a month, I finally found the perfect SUV at CarMax. The only issue was that it was at CarMax Richmond. I requested the free transfer online and a sales representative for CarMax Dulles immediately called me. I was impressed with the initial phone call and follow up emails. After a few days, I received an email that the car was shipped to Dulles. Then a couple of days later (Monday) I received an email and phone call that the car had arrived. We set up an appointment to go and see the vehicle on Thursday because the sales rep told us that he didn't work on Tues or Wednesday. When my husband arrived, they couldn't locate the vehicle! I had literally been on the website hours beforehand & it stated the vehicle was at CarMax Dulles. I have email records, phone records and text records that we had an appointment to test drive and see the vehicle. I wanted my husband to leave immediately but he couldn't because he was getting his own vehicle appraised. After waiting around for an hour, it was finally discovered that the vehicle we had transferred and had a hold on was put on a truck to go to North Carolina. The vehicle wasn't cheap. It was a nearly new SUV with a lot of upscale features. They just lost themselves valuable customers. If you have good to great credit and a decent income, please go to a real car dealership. I had a horrible experience when I went to sell a car. The ordeal lasted over 2 hours . The business person was rude and had a demeaning attitude, acting as if she was doing us a favor by purchasing the car. I would never go back to the Dulles Carmax either to sell or purchase a car. read more

I bought a Ford Focus from the Sterling, VA Carmax on May 25, 2012. I had already picked the car mostly because of it's low miles (25,900) the night before on the Internet. Kazi, the salesman I got when I called, was waiting for me the next afternoon when I came in after work. The car was great. All clean, shiny, brand-new looking. During the test drive it looked and felt like a new car. And Kazi was great. Pleasant, energetic, and very professional. Within one week, the brakes started squealing so loudly everytime I applied them that I felt very conspicuous in my neighborhood as the neighbors would turn to stare at me like I was a piece of white trash driving around. I brought it back to Carmax to be repaired a couple of days later. They were nice, but still it is a pain in the behind to have to drive all the way out there for an issue that shouldn't have existed since the car was "Carmax Certified." Then you have to leave it there all day long, have someone drive you back out there at night to pick it up - all a pain. The 30 day warranty took care of the cost of repair, though. Now, two weeks after getting the brakes repaired and the squeaking silenced, the brakes have completely busted. Stepping on the brakes does not make the car stop unless you simultaneously jerk up the emergency hand brake. Again, I have taken it back in for service and am waiting to hear from the service department. I did call a few minutes ago since it is now noon, for an update on the service, and the woman who answered the phone informed me that someone will have to call me back as the mechanic who was initially assigned responsibility for fixing my brakes has called in sick, and no one knows who is ultimately going to be re-assigned to my car. I think the lady might not be that aware of everything going on around her, or maybe is just too busy - but her response did not reassure me about my car. I am glad it is still on the 30 day warrant, and I really hope Carmax makes things right by honestly fixing this issue that is making my new car a deathtrap, but in a car with so few miles, that is certified by this reputable dealer, and which they sold for more than 10 thousand dollars and financed for four years, one would think the brakes would still be operable. It is kind of scary. I haven't even made my first payment yet. Doesn't the fact that they financed indicate that they are pretty sure that the car will be operable at least for the length of the contract? We will see. Again, the salesman, Kazi was great. But shouldn't being CarMax certified mean something? I was assured I was getting a great, reliable, and long-lasting car. I was presented with a list of all the car's components that passed inspection and the dealer's tough standards. Brakes was one of the items on the list. How can they break down so soon? I wonder if Carmax cares about the safety of its customers. I could seriously be killed driving this car I bought for so much money only three weeks ago. read more

this carmax has a very friendly and patient staff. karina, especially, was super nice and helpful when i bought my first car.

Bought a car in December 2013 we asked the guy that was helping us if it had been in an accident because the car was a 2010 with only 8,000 miles I don't remember his name but he said this car has not been in an accident that the carfax was clean. We thought we were getting a good deal so we took it. Went yesterday to a ford dealership because we were going to trade it in for a truck they print out the carfax that says the car was in an accident in 2010. I wish I could give this place a -5 review. Walked in to look at cars and NO ONE acknowledged us. We walked around for an hour and nothing. As we were walking out, we still didn't have anyone ask us if we had questions or needed help. NOTHING. We decided to go to another dealer and the moment we got out of the car we were greeted and helped. Purchased a car from them instead. Carmax has the WORST customer service. Came here to buy a BMW 3 series. Customer service was good, I spoke to one sales associate and I told them I liked a car at their MD location so they shipped it over to this location for free and held it for me until I could test drive. When the car arrived I came back to test drive and got passed on to another sales associate named Fil (apparently these guys move back and forth between locations so if you want to deal with the same person you have to buy on the spot...) who was excellent. He raced cars like me and had a lot of knowledge about cars and the particular car I was purchasing. I like their sales operation here, no pressure, Fil let me look over the car and did not pressure me to do anything which is the type of sales person I like. I hate when you go to a dealership and the sales person tries to press you into something you may not want. As we were closing the sale a rude customer approached Fil and demanded he help them and he kindly shewed them away indicating that he was already with a customer. Their operations here is very fast and streamlined and the price is whatever they have listed no haggle as they say so don't try to low-ball. Their prices are pretty decent compared to the other dealerships that had the same car priced higher. Another cool factor is I was able to sign all the paperwork and get my tags in less than 20 minutes. Usually when you buy a car you will sit in the dealership for hours trying to close the sale. They have a 30 day warranty on all their cars but they will try to push the extended warranty they sell. One thing about their warranty that you might want to think about is if you purchase it, you have to use their designated shop and/or technicians. This may not be what you want if you have a BMW or Mercedes. I know BMW technicians have to go through rigorous training and be certified before working their cars. Last thing you want is some tech straight out of high school working on your car. I also sold my Lexus here too which was in great shape but had an accident from the previous owner and they gave me the same price the dealership was going to give me for the car. So word of advice for those going to sell your car, you will not get blue book value for it at all you will get market value for the car minus any imperfections with the car. If you want more sell it personally. For those who like to be hand held through the sales process this is not the type of place for you and you should go to a dealership where they will lie to you and try to take your money. You come here, and what you see is what you get, no games, to the point, straight business. read more

Good experience through and through. Hint, I rarely give 5 stars so this 4 star rating speaks highly of the business. I had a car transferred in and it was immediately ready for a test drive. I checked over the car and it had been detailed extensively and appeared just like the on-line photos. While we were out on the test drive my car was in the process of being appraised. When we got back they gave me a very fair number for my trade and I purchased the car. The whole process took about 2 hours. I love how they transfered my old tags right there. No 30 day tags or a trip to DMV. Only downside, you pay a bit more for a comparable vehicle at a traditional dealer. read more

They have a large selection of cars, but the service and quality of cars is not great. I came here because, like most people, you just want to see the cars and know the price. However, they don't seem to have enough staff to care properly for customers. People were routinely waiting 15-20 minutes or more for a salesperson to help them. I had an appointment and they were still 15 minutes late until I asked again to have the salesperson show up. I recently had a car transferred from another local store (within an hour away) and took them 9 days to get it ready. I was told it was in perfect condition since it was only 2 years old. However, when it showed up,it was filthy, scratched, scraped and had been repainted (poorly) on one side. The entire experience makes me question the type of cars they are selling. Managers didn't seem to care and I'm sure they'll just sell it to someone else, but they definitely lost my trust from previous purchases. read more

Mark O. in Dulles is outstanding. He is efficient, with a pleasant personality and professional demeanor, which helps move the process along. We traded in our older luxury car for a newer luxury car, and Mark O. made the process fairly easy (we hate buying cars, in general, and do it as infrequently as possible). I would highly recommend Mark O. because he is attentive and intelligent (former engineer), and makes the trading and buying process as painless as possible. read more

I am very disappointed in the service department at the Sterling CarMax location. I bought my car there on February 28, 2014. When I initially test drove the car, I noticed a thumping noise in the rear brakes which the salesperson said would be fixed by the time I picked up the car. I took delivery at 8:45 pm, so the opportunity to drive the vehicle did not present itself. I was told that they were cleaning it while I was finishing the paperwork. After getting in the car to take it home, I realized that the vehicle interior had not been cleaned, they simply ran it through the carwash. The next day, I immediately noticed that there is a clicking noise in when the wheel is turned to make sharp turns. In addition, the brake noise was still there. I called and made arrangements to take it back to service, which I had to wait a couple of weeks to get it in. Once my appointment finally rolled around, I took it back and within a couple of hours they called me at work and told me that they were not able to reproduce the noises and if I wanted them to allocate more time to it, I would have to leave work and come drive the mechanic in the vehicle, and they close at 5 pm. I have a job that I can't walk away from the help a mechanic pick up on an obvious noise that he likely heard 100 times. They attributed the brake noise to the tires being out of balance and said that they balanced the tires and solved that problem. I picked up my car that evening from the business office, both the clicking and the thumping are still alive and well in my car. I called about two weeks ago to bring my car back for the same issues, which according to their guaranty, are covered free of charge until 6 months after the issue has been in for service. The young man on the phone told me it would take two weeks to get my car in and they would not provide a loaner, as they only give loaners in the first 30 days after purchase. He proceeded to tell me that I would have to pay $250 for these repairs. I decided not to try to argue with him on this and would deal with it when I drop the car off. I took the car to Jiffy Lube over the weekend after having only driven the car 4,000 miles since purchasing and they showed the in-cabin filter, which was completely full of dirty and leaves, it was the original filter. I called CarMax and asked if the "complete reconditioning" of the cars includes changing all filters, fluids, and oil and was assured that it does. This filter cost me $50 to have replaced. I immediately drove my vehicle to CarMax and told them what had happened at Jiffy Lube and told them that the handling of the issues that have been unresolved since purchase is unacceptable. The sales manager, John, gave me a loaner car and put my car in for service saying that someone would call me this morning to give me an assessment of my vehicle and let me know when it would be ready. I received a voicemail from Sierra this morning saying that my car would not be looked at until September 4th. Today is August 18th. They gave me a car that has seats that are covered in dog hair, smells like a dog, and the tire pressure sensor is on. I am not pleased with their handling of the situation, and I am certainly not driving this awful car for what could be WEEKS until they get around to fixing problems that existed before I ever purchased the car!! Think twice before buying a vehicle at this location. read more

I had a fantastic and easy time selling my car and buying a new one through this CarMax. When we got there we were greeted immediately and didn't have to wait long for anything all day. I went in the afternoon just to look around and ended up finding the car I'd been wanting for awhile. Donna was AMAZING and made it easy and quick to test drive that car and buy it. Some of the cars in the lot smelled terrible (like smoke or chemicals) but most were just fine to sit in and check out. My experience is hard to put in words, except disappointed. This was my second purchase from this Carmax and it did not replicate my first experience at all. I paid to have the car moved from New Port News and was not notified when it was ready to look at. After I called to inquire about the car the sales person I was working with was not available nor did he return a voice message. Another sales person jumped in to help me and agreed to meet with me, I was driving from Pittsburgh. The experience I had with this individual was even worse, the car was filthy and the sales person started on the sales pitch for the extended warranty before the door was opened, really. I felt like I was being husseled not shown a car! He was more interested in selling as many cars as possible in the shortest amount of time. I finally said enough was enough! The sales manager assigned another sales person and we completed the deal. I paid to have the car transported and it was in no condition to be shown and sales people more interested in selling as many cars as possible in the shortest amount of time. And btw no one ever tried to make any of this right! Take my advise buy from a reputable dealer instead! I am done with CarMax! read more

This was my second time at this dealership. It was a great of an experience as car buying can be. I thought I might be interested in a certain car, I was out test driving one within 10 minutes, and I had the car purchased and was driving away and hour and a half later. Do not deal with this carmax dealership....they are not honest. My husband and I put a hold on a pickup until we could get the necessary financing through our credit union. This was Tuesday evening and would pick the car up Thursday giving us enough time to get the check and sign the bank's documents. Now we are stuck with a check in hand from our credit union and no truck! Do not deal with these people. read more

I was skeptical about selling my car at this Carmax because of the mediocre reviews on yelp, but I decided to take it in to get an appraisal. After all, it couldn't hurt. I went in and was impressed by how good the customer service was. But I still didn't think that they would offer me any more than the dealership. It took about an hour for them to inspect my car and provide me with a quote, but I was so pleasantly surprised by how much they offered. It was substantially more than what the dealership offered. I wasn't even planning on sell my car that day when I went in to this Carmax, but they made me an offer I couldn't resist. I sold it right there and then. I still owed money on the car to my bank, but Carmax made it so easy. They took care of all the paperwork, and in less then half an hour, I was out the door with a check for the difference. Also, everyone at this Carmax was so friendly from start to finish. The only downside that day was that since I wasn't planning on selling my car that day, I didn't have a ride home. 3 weeks ago I purchased a 2010 Lexus 250 Hybrid. Since that time, the car has been in my driveway for 10 days, and at the CarMax and/or the Lexus dealer for 10 days. Clearly, CarMax failed miserably with its "125 Point" inspection prior to the sale as they missed something so obvious as a broken cd player. The car is now at Lexus because it needs an entire new entertainment system. Here's the kicker, CarMax gave me a piece of junk Camry as a loaner. Today, I get in the car to drive to lunch and notice that the car has a flat tire. CarMax sends a tow truck to put on the spare tire which means I had to waste another afternoon driving back to CarMax to get another piece of junk Camry to use as a loaner. The process for buying the car was not too horrible, but their service department is just awful. I purchased my 2012 Ford Flex at the beginning of August this year. I was under the impression that although I was buying a pre-owned vehicle that the car had gone through inspections and had been Carmax certified to sell. In less than 12 hours of having the vehicle I had to bring it back due to several issues. Over the last four months the vehicle has been back to Carmax for other issues. A misaligned door that is still not flush. Bad breaks that needed replaced etc. The customer service has been ok but I generally have to wait weeks for an appointment. I woke up this morning to find almost three inches of water pooling in the back seat. I can hear water rushing underneath the car. I can't trace where the water is coming from as only the floor was wet. I called Carmax and was disappointed to say the least. The service manage Craig has been helpful and very nice as well as Valerie. However I can't help but be disappointed at the quality and condition of the vehicle I purchased and the lack of assistance on weekends. The loaner they gave me has died. It only drives in first gear and doesn't work in reverse. I have to work tomorrow and have no vehicle to drive. My mechanic found problems (both rear shocks need to be replaced), so I took it to Carmax while it was still under their warranty. It took a week for them to get me in. I left the car with them for the day, and they called to say the work was done. When I went to pick it up that evening, two of the items were not addressed, with notes from service saying that there were no issues. When I spoke with Craig Fletcher, the service manager, he stood behind his tech's work and said they would not be making any repairs. My personal mechanic stands behind his diagnostic 100%. I'm not confident that Carmax didn't wipe the hydraulic fluid off the shaft, which would show no issues for the immediate time. The only upside is that the Carmax visit is covered for 6 months, so I will probably see them again to make this repair in the near future. With the length of time it takes to get an appointment, the lack of service, and the fact that I had to call sales in order to reach service/parts (they don't answer the phone in service), I am an unsatisfied customer. read more

I recently bought a Porsche Boxster from CarMax in Sterling Va and unfortunately had to return the car on the 5th day. I can honestly say that CarMax stands behind their 5 day money back guarantee because my car suffered a catastrophic electrical failure to it's ECM and rendered the car undrivable on my 5th day of ownership. I called my salesman David who facilitated a return to another CarMax dealership closer to my home where I was able to return the car - no questions asked and received a full refund of my purchase price in the mail a few days later. This was the third car I have purchased from CarMax over the years and have never had any complaints with the dealership at all - even after having to return this car! I highly recommend CarMax to anyone looking to buy a pre-owned vehicle for a fair price without the typical 'haggling" involved at other dealerships. 5 Stars!! Recommended! read more
