I was in the market for a new car and was skeptical after having some issues with other dealerships in town. I decided to try Carmax because they were new in town. When I walked in I was greeted with a smile and Tyler was more than willing to listen to what I wanted and help me to achieve my goals. He worked diligently to make sure that I had exactly what I wanted and even though it was a lengthy process he made sure that I drove off that lot with a car I love!! We even went back four months later and bought a truck. Our family will never buy anywhere else! No stress, no drama. 100% quality and upstanding customer care. This was a review I had hoped I would never have to edit but I am. I needed to take my car in to be serviced. The first time I let the pawn off slide because it was brand new and I wanted the issue taken care of by the manufacturer if it could be. The second time I was having issues with the dash cluster lighting up. I brought it to Carmax with my four wheel drive engaged and parked the car. The next morning I brought in the keys because there weren't any after hour slips. I talked to Paul and told and showed him what was happening to my car. He proceeded to pull my car warranty up and tell me to take it to Hyundai because they would cover it under the manufacturer warranty and I wouldn't have to use my Maxcare (yes I have Carmax warranty). So I drove my car to Hyundai in four wheel drive, in the middle of summer, because Paul said it would be covered. Much to my dismay when I got to Hyundai I was informed that the warranty only covered the original owner and that I was out of warranty for second owners and that my Maxcare coverage would not cover my repair or my rental! Cheers to Carmax getting off free and clear on my repair again. Sadly I have to change my rating because of this. I cannot give five stars to a company who allows departments to treat their customers with this amount of disregard. I left it with three stars because I also never have poor experiences with the business center. When I come in every month to pay my bill they are nothing but the most helpful and friendly! read more

We walked into CarMax at the scheduled time, had our old vehicle appraised, test drove the new vehicle, did all the required paperwork to sell them our vehicle and by the new one and were driving off the lot in our new vehicle one hour and thirty-two minutes later. I had a decent auto buying experience. I liked the fact that there was a lot to choose from and the salesman takes you on a golf cart to look at the cars you're interested in. Positives: A lot to choose from Golf cart experience Clean bathroom Nice staff Knowledgeable manager Decent financing Negatives: -Most of the inventory is from fleet companies such as enterprise etc. -Dirty chairs in wait area-looked like they were stained with food or drink -Pressure to purchase maxcare was not ok with me -Oil in the car I purchased was due for an oil change about 100 miles after the change date-according to the CarMax sticker on the windshield ! (Really? You guys couldn't have changed it before you sold it?) Overall it was an ok experience. I have sold and bought from CARMAX the last 4-5 times I have purchased a car - and will continue to deal with them! This was my first time with the Reno store, and also my first time having a car transferred from a different CARMAX location (Missouri). I continue to be impressed by their honesty, fair deals, and professionalism. Our sales rep. was Leah Rago, who aided us very professionally through in the entire process. We had one "bump" due to my expectations dealing with the new vehicle transfer (it sometimes takes longer than one might expect - it was 23 days - but that is due to the transportation co., not CARMAX). They offer a fair deal, low pressure, and I leave knowing that I got the same deal, a fair one, that EVERYONE ELSE got. It is a shame all car dealers don't work thus way! read more

Probably will never ever do business at carmax again. Sad cause the sale was so easy. A week after buying my car the brakes were making nose. They replaced or said they replaced them because it was within the 30 days of purchase and they had to. Moving on, 6 months later my car started jerking I was pissed. Took it back they replaced the rotors and pads or so they said they did. They claimed the rotors were warped. Now that was 6 months ago. You guessed it, my car started jerking again. This time carmax said they would not replace them again. Now mind you I was told they warranted their parts for at least a year and reassured me it would not happen again, and it had only been 6 months. The guy was super rude and told me to take it to another shop and see why it did that. Today i took it to another shop. They said if they didn't do the calipers, it might be that. They checked them and they were ok. They called back and told me that once the brakes and rotors were off that it is very obvious that they had NEVER been changed at all. The parts were still the original parts from GMC. You could see obvious signs that they had been resurfaced, and when placed back on, there was no lubricant used and not installed, correct causing them to just wear down worse. He only told me this because he felt I needed to be informed that there was no way those were only 6 month old brakes and rotors. So not only is the service department at carmax rude, they are apparently cheap and lie! read more

We've bought two premium cars and the experience has always been the best. I can't imagine why anyone would go to a traditional car dealer!

They represented (and priced accordingly) that the car had Heads Up Display and GPS. They also represented that it had gone through a 120 point inspection and was in good condition. With under 50k miles, I believed I was getting a fair deal. Guess what? No Heads Up Display. GPS is going to cost $685 to get functional. Took to another dealer for recall work (Yeah, CarMax doesn't bother with recalls). Less than 5k miles later, all brakes, rotors and tires need replacing - mind you, this is a spare vehicle that does not go off road. Call customer service and they are happy to tell you they've got the best warranty but sorry, NOT FOR YOU. Buyer beware and steer clear. Not a fair deal. Should have taken my cash elsewhere. Believe the low stars and bad reviews. They are real. read more

I was surprised at how quick the process was, I did a trade-in and purchased a vehicle all in less than 1 hour and 30 min. Usually dealers take 3-4 hours. In Feb 2017, I ended up returning the car I purchased back in Aug. and purchased a new vehicle. Again, they made the process very easily and seamless. I would recommend this experience to anyone. CarMax has reinvented the car buying experience. Our salesman, Ty, was exceptional. I love the no pressure feel. Every vehicle is unlocked so you are set free on your own to look around. He checks in on you and is the perfect mix of laying off but answering questions. I contacted Carmax in late May over the phone about purchasing a low mileage, newer sedan. I knew exactly what make and model I wanted and had a huge down payment. I estimated that I would purchase a vehicle that would cost anywhere from $22K to $26K. The local store didn't have one in stock but we found one in a nearby state. The salesman contacted them to verify the condition of the car. The cars previous owner was a smoker. On to the next car. Found one in northern CA. Waited almost 2 weeks for the vehicle to be transported to Reno. I was called when it arrived and informed that the passenger locks were jammed. The car had to be taken to the dealer, who ordered a part. Due to Corona virus nobody knew how long the delay would be. Possible electrical problems? I chose another car. This car was located in southern CA. Again another 2 week wait. And I was charged $99 for transport. I recieved the call. The car was here. First thing I was told was due to all the prior problems the Manager refunded the $99 fee. Then I'm informed that there is not a paper title on this car therefore they cannot sell it. I was so upset that told the salesman I would call back. Immediately I recieved a text informing me that they would let me know when the title arrived and that that I would be working with the Manager from this point on. I called the Manager who told me that a title will be mailed to Carmax Reno from a Southern CA Carmax. However they don't overnight it. They will send it when they sweep their mail and have enough to send?!? The next day I went to Nissan Carson City and purchased a brand new car with 3 miles on it. read more

I've been looking for a new used car, undecided between three different makes. I'd been to several dealers and stumbled on Carmax so I decided to check it out. Nice clean facility and high tech search through its car inventory on lot and elsewhere. Found one of the cars that I was interested in and took it for a short test drive. I decided it wasn't what I wanted and was too expensive so left it at that. Salesman was pleasant and helpful and explained they could get a car from another of their locations with a specific shipping fee as listed in their listing. I found a car elsewhere and took my old car to Carmax to see what they'd pay for it. They gave me a very fair KBB price which was a bit more than a local dealer offered for a trade-in. The Carmax process is simple and stress free as there is "no haggle".. Just do your homework on-line for KBB, Edmunds, and NADA evaluations to find out what the car you're dealing for is worth to see if Carmax' prices are reasonable. I'd also take a car you wish to purchase to a trusted mechanic to have it checked out because I have no way of knowing how good their inspections are and their warranty is only 30 days. That means you are limited to onsite cars as you have to pay the transport fee to have a car brought from one of Carmax' other sites (unless Carmax would agree to refund the charge if your private inspection doesn't pan out). read more

Extremely upset. Purchased a vehicle almost three weeks ago. During the evening of my purchase I returned from a test drive and told my sales gal that I didn't want to be here to long that if it was gonna take hours that I'll come back the next day. To which she responded that no it shouldn't. The vehicle already had a full tank of gas, detail just needed to give it a quick wash and vacuum which should take no longer than 20-30 mins and paperwork shouldn't take long either since i already started the process prior. 45 minutes later we're done with the paperwork and the vehicle is officially mine. The sales gal went to check if the car was back from detail because it was supposed to be and it was not. Another 30 minutes go by and no car then a total of 2 hours go by and no vehicle so the sales gal had to go walk down to the detail shop to check on it. 15 minutes later she comes back in the vehicle with two detail guys in it as well. One guy comes around and says to me "wow that was awesome and fun I need to look into getting a manual Golf R" to which I thought was an odd thing to say. I then get into the vehicle and the car say it has been running for over an hour, the tank is no longer full and says since start 53 miles were put on the vehicle since refuel. which I filled it at the shell just a couple blocks down the road on my test drive on my way back. which means they were joy riding MY vehicle that whole time. Doing who knows what to the vehicle, potentially damaging it and wasting my gas and time. I called the following day to talk to management about, they told me someone hirer up would call me. Several days later no call. Called the customer service line and was told the same thing that someone would call me. A week later and no call. Called the other day AGAIN and was told the GM of the store would call me and still no response. Extremely upset at the lack of acknowledgment. read more

I have bought 3 cars from Carmax in Reno in the last two years. The sales experience has been great. Thats where it ends! This is the first time I have had to use their service department. My car needed some body work done so I scheduled an appointment that was about two weeks out. The day I drove my car off the lot the check engine light came on. I called my salesman and he said bring it in immediately. The service person took my car to the service bay and came back about thirty minutes later and said he reset the codes and it appeared that the check engine light came on due to the battery going dead as the car may have sat for awahile. The next day the check engine light came on again. I called and was told it will be two weeks until I could get it looked at. I told the service rep maybe they could just do it when I had my body work appointment. They agreed! I brought the car in and told the service folks I needed to have it back in three days as we had a trip planned. I said if you can get the body work done in that time fine but if not do the check engine light. My appointment was like at 230 at 830 that night, I got a call and text from a lot person at carmax asking me why my car was sitting in the service drive through and asking me to come get my personal stuff out of it if I was returning the car. Really they dont talk to each other ---returning the car! I was expecting that my car was already taken to the shop to look at codes for the check engine light. I texted my salesman and said wtf. He said he would straighten it out. Two days later I called and asked if my car was done and the service manager said no that they had just taken it to the body shop and it would take a week and a half. I told her I said I needed the car now as we had a trip planned as I told her. She basically called me a lair and said I never told her that --my brother was with me and heard the whole conversation - I said since you had the car for a couple days I hope that you at least fixed the check engine light she said no they hadnt had a chance to get to it. I told her I will just go get my car and she threatened me and said they would not cover the things needed to be fixed and would even cancel my extended warrantee I purchased. I asked her to have the General Manager call me which never occured. I then asked my salesman to have the General Manager call me he said he would.. No call still from the General Manager. I called this morning to check on my car and the service person said they would have to have someone call me back as they were at lunch. It was 1030. I never received a call back so I called back this afternoon and finally reached someone in service and they said it will be at least another week until the body work is finished and then they will get to the check engine light. I reminded them that they said I would have my car back in a week and a half. They said sorry! In my opinion Carmax needs to replace the entire leadership as this dealership. The General Manager is like the man behind the curtain and you can never talk to him and the service manager is rude and not honest! read more

We bought a car from their dealer auction in California and have been waiting nearly 4 months for a title. The customer service has been atrocious and we have been hung up on, lied to, and simply ignored by almost every single representative in the 2 carmax locations we have tried to deal with. It seems even though they owed us a title within 30 days no one at carmax seems to follow up or work on our case to resolve it unless we call. They have failed to get a title or getvthe appropriate paperwork to legally sell the vehicle. We have called weekly and sometimes daily and they just keep pushing the delivery date of the title back farther and farther. I have asked repeatedly at the Reno carmax location to speak with the general manager and have been given several excuses why he can't speak or even that he won't speak with me to resolve the issues. I was told he was in a meeting then when I said I would wait he suddenly left the building for the day. Then I called back the next day and he was gone for a dentist appointment. Today he wasn't in his office so I called back later in the day and was told he just didn't want to speak with me on the matter. I have also asked for copies of the paper work they do have and on several occasions had to point out the paperwork or signatures they were missing. I have asked for copies of the papers they sayvthey have and been told on at least 3 occasions they have it but still to this day haven't recieved copies that they even ha e the authority to sell the vehicle. I have tries to get satisfaction through the local office in Reno who took the car in but have had no success after 4 months. My only option at this point is to write reviews and complaints on all websites I can find to get someone high enough up at the company to actually do something. If carmax is reading this, all I want is to be dealt with honestly and a title for the car purchased 4 months ago. read more

I had not kept insurance etc on it of course we sold it. So they send me the papers I have to go find a Notary (during COVID) and send the papers back. Sold this business a 2014 paid off Subaru with 0 miles for little of nothing and bought a Volvo S40 2006 for $12,000 and the Volvo is a pile of crap and they will not help out one bit. I've driven the Volvo less than 10000 miles and I'm already $3,000 in maintenance and it is currently at the shop broken down with a potential bad cylinder. CarMax will not help out whatsoever.
