STILL CAN'T BELIEVE IT! The car dealer would not buy back my 2014 iQ (Toyota Scion brand) saying it was too old. But CARMAX didn't flinch when providing an online offer so I took it in, expecting they would lowball it, which they did: by 1/3. However, some inconsistencies were reported by the agency, reflecting odometer tampering, battery & tires purchase dates, that were bringing down the price. Jose, at the Independence store gave me a number to call and see if the agency could match the information could explain so it could be updated before COB. Agency said it would take 3 hours, already 2:30, so it would be close. Long story short, the agency came through (I didn't have to spend the night in the store, as I had decided to stay until the items were updated). The final check was just what I was quoted on the CARMAX site. I knew what my car's value was. It was PERFECT and the store could set it out on the lot without touching up anything! EVERYONE, whether selling outright, or trading, should read carefully the details on the printed estimate that can bring a car's price down several thousand dollars. I ended up walking out with a check a few hundred less than the original online offer. My small family has purchased several cars from CarMax over the years, though it has been some time and at a different store. We had good experiences in the past, so when it was time to buy again it was easy to choose CarMax. We chose this branch because it's a moderately more pleasant drive than fighting with the Johnson County throng...a mistake, we should have simply powered through and went to the other location. Our experience was pockmarked by issues large and small. While our salesperson was helpful and responsive she was totally unsupported by the other parts of the experience - especially the shop and the business folks. It was roughly 6 weeks from start to finish, largely due to supply chain issues. I don't expect a perfect experience, but do expect that when issues arise that the people I do business with will be communicative - this is where the shop, business office, and store management fell utterly short - but we persevered...a mistake, we should have fought the traffic on 35 and gone to the other location. While we ultimately got things sorted, the car we were sold (after their in-house mechanics supposedly put it through the inspection ringer that CarMax is known for) began having issues as soon as we passed the 1000 mile/3 month milestone. Roughly $4,600 dollars worth of repair and on issues that any mechanic (we saw two and spoke with another via telephone) should have immediately seen in a competent inspection. Our numerous phone calls and emails (with case numbers, and unfulfilled promised to be back in touch with us) to the went unacknowledged by the repair shop and business office - but we persevered...the right choice, we contacted their corporate office. Once they got involved the whole thing was sorted in a few days. I feel badly for the many other customers that have used this branch of CarMax and had a similarly bad experience. It is damaging and damning to a company when a single location is so poorly run. All in all, two stars - one because I can't give zero, and one because the issue was finally resolved, but only after persistence on our part. I will use CarMax again (and will be doing so almost immediately), but will never darken the door of this branch. They do not meet the standards that CarMax set in the past. If the other Metro KC location doesn't meet the standard, I'll never use the company again - and will look forward to the company's closure. read more

There's something to be said about CarMax and their so called "Maxcare warranty"... They sell you on their policy (which is outsourced to 3rd party administrators so they take ZERO RESPONSIBILITY for when they deny your warranty claims!) touting this amazing coverage that states they'll cover any damages beyond regular maintenance/ ware /tare as covered, and all you'll have to pay is the deductible. Recently, i was driving on the highway and the check engine light came on. Alarmed, as anyone would be, i immediately pulled over and called for a ride while i arranged for an appointment at a Carmax care approved auto shop (which is required). Upon later diagnostics, they found the engine head gaskets needed to be replaced along with some of the spark plugs. The car shop provided an estimate, to which the Maxcare warranty company ASSURANT, sent out an adjustor to check in on. It was then DECIDED that they would not fully cover the repairs to my car based on the ASSUMPTION that the damages were incurred because "i didn't pull over right away" once it started to overheat. I tried calling their team multiple times to clarify that I DID PULL OVER as soon as i safely could, but they couldnt care less! No supervisors or decision-makers would even speak to me about so i could clarify. They had already made their decision on the claim, closed it out and wouldnt even give me the time of day because "the decision had already been made." And Carmax is backing it. TL;DR - they sell you on a bogus warranty and then find any reason to deny coverage and completely advertise their "amazing coverage" to be otherwise. It's false advertising! Not only will they find whatever reason they can to screw owners out of paying, but they wont even give you the time of day or let you speak with any supervisors or anyone making the decisions about it. My first experience using CarMax was last February in 2019. At that time, I found a particular vehicle in a particular color that I really fell in love with and actually flew out to Missouri to pick it up. First of all, the staff at the dealership were all extremely courteous, they communicated very well and they were easy to work with. The process of picking up the car, completing the paperwork and getting on my way was quick and hassle-free. The condition of the vehicle was also superb. It was well-detailed, clean and fully fueled. Absolutely no complaints there. However the reason I give CarMax only two stars is because of the rest of the experience. 1) They lied about the financing options. I specifically asked them if I could make bi-weekly or bi-monthly payments, which could be automatically deducted from my bank account. They answered: "no." Then, several months later, I was speaking with a customer service representative on the phone, and they said that CarMax did in-fact offer that option. 2) They would not pick me up from the airport in Kansas City to pick up the vehicle. I ended up riding the city bus (which wasn't a bad experience BTW) and was prepared to walk from the closest bus stop, before a kind stranger gave me a ride. If a customer is flying all the way from California to purchase a car, at the very least, offer to give them a ride to your dealership... 3) The COVID pandemic occurred, causing my wife and I to fall behind on a few bills. California is a state, where banks and finance companies were asked to halt collection efforts and stop late fees at this time. Apparently CarMax Finance didn't get the memo, as they called several times per day to hound me for payment, continued to charge late fees and threatened to repossess the vehicle. They even tried being sneaky about it by rotating their incoming phone numbers to make it difficult to identify them. Seriously? 4) If you fall behind on payments (in my case, due to the COVID pandemic,) they won't allow you to simply go online to make one. They cut that option off if you're more than 45 days late. You would think they would want to make it EASIER, not harder for their customers to pay their bills. 5) I found out later, that despite the clean CarFax report on my vehicle, that it had in-fact been in some kind of accident and repaired. My vehicle was also delivered to me with an unresolved recall, which I had to take care of when I got it home. A professional dealer like this, which does charge a premium for their vehicles and service, should've taken care of the errant CarFax report and the recall before I took possession of the car. 6) When you do make a payment, you'd think this would cause them to stop harassing you by phone for another month. Nope! After I make a payment by phone, a couple days later, they start calling me relentlessly several times a day again. Today, they've called 3 times... So as with any used car dealership, caveat emptor should be practiced with CarMax as well... read more

Not helpful, business section group of people seemed annoyed to have to even do work. They messed up reservations. I recommend trying the location in Merriam Kansas before this one. I bought my Land Rover a little over a year ago. I understand that used cars are what they are. This car was clearly used to transport drugs. Screws have been removed from the cup holders, the front grill was loose, and various panels have clearly been removed and shoddily replaced. The grill on the car flew off, the back inside panel in the trunk space just fell off. It's all minor body damage that Carmax has agreed to replace but they've never followed through. Weeks pass without a response and one time they cancelled my appointment bc their system was down. They said they'd call to reschedule , never did. How am I reading these POSITIVE reviews for this CarMax? My encounter was horrible!!! Speaking to the salesman here was like going to McDonald's! The salesman all the way up to the managers are very unprofessional to you over the phone, so imagine if you went in person! Specifically, I spoke with the sales manager Jessica, and you can tell she hates her job! I always feel sorry for these individuals because it reflects poorly on the company, but them putting her in a manager position, maybe that's the impression CarMax, Inc. wants you to have? There was NO pressure from her and she ensured we felt comfortable with every aspect of the process before we moved forward. Went on Monday when service opened to be told no loaners, I drove up there and they miraculously found a loaner. No over a week later and I have called several times to check on as car is still sitting in same place he parked it last Monday. Steer clear of carmax if you want your vehicle serviced in a timely manner. Went today after work to check on and was told technician had to leave early today. I received my full refund of the transfer fee and my vehicle was transferred for free. The customer service at Carmax of Independence is exceptional. I don't normally write reviews but I decided I couldn't keep quiet about what happened to me yesterday at the Carmax in Independence. I would not give any stars if that was an option. I took a perfectly good 2010 BMW to get an appraisal. The appraisal I got was low (can't fault people from trying to make money), but that wasn't my issue and I declined the offer. When I went to drive my car, I found out my tires were turned all the way (meaning it had been driven and returned), but I couldn't drive the car. I had no power to my wheel and my car had a charging malfunction showing. After talking to the Associate a couple of times to try to find who did the appraisal, a gentleman came to tell me that he had a hard time driving it as well, so he didn't drive it. That's odd, why would you then put on the appraisal that everything on my car was in good condition. By this time I'm so frustrated that I can't move, so now I would have to leave the car to be fixed by them and charged (mind you, my car had no problems when I drove it there) and they tell me they might not get to it until 2 days later. My husband picked me up and when we called our mechanic and dealer friends, they advised us to get the keys and they would come there and look at the car themselves (they wanted to assess the situation because they were baffled as well). When I returned to get my keys, I was told they couldn't locate them. Several minutes later they located it and the gentleman who found it threw it at the lady with whom I was dealing and my key fob fell. I asked him whether that was my key fob and he lied and said it was another key fob, when this happened right in front of me. The worst part is when my Mechanic and Dealer friend got there and popped the hood! They found that someone had unscrewed the power steering fluid cap, the liquid had squirted out and they had replaced the cap tightly. In addition to that someone unscrewed the oil filter thinking it was the oil cap and there had been oil that leaked unto the belt and it came off. Needless to say they were both livid! They decided they would fix the car themselves because they didn't trust Carmax at this point. The carfax app and customer service especially the finance department is not able to help you at all. They keep telling you to go to the website and change things that way and when you try you get an error. In person they can't even help you with your payments. We spent months trying to change our payment method and got absolutely nowhere. So I would say that if you are looking into getting a car at carfax definitely do not finance with them because they absolutely can't help you. But you will find the buying process through carfax is great and the coverage they offer is great and seamless. read more

My car has been in the shop 5 times, with the first time being WITHIN the first 30 days of owning it. Now after owning the vehicle for 8 months, the vehicle is in the shop AGAIN and I just received a call from their corp office stating the vehicle isn't registered with the state of Kansas. My family has purchased 5 vehicles in the past few years from Carmax Independence. they were wonderful in the past but the most recent purchase there (by my daughter and son-in-law, unfortunately on my recommendation) has been a horrible experience and I couldn't possibly recomend them to anyone now. The vehicle had brake and headlight problems within 2 days of purchase (32 point check?) and altho it was stipulated that the car be cleaned inside and stains removed from drivers seat before purchase, they never did it. Had to return in within a week to have repairs done and they did finally remove stains but car was still not cleaned. My daughter drove approx 5 miles and the brakes started grinding just like before. shouldn't be selling vehicles that aren't road ready and SAFE or making promises they won't keep just to sell a car. I bought a car from here a couple years ago. I took it to reputable mechanic to have it checked over before I decided if I was going to keep the car. The mechanic told me that the valve cover gasket was leaking so I took it back to Carmax for them to fix it. Apparently they just bandaid it since 7 months later it was leaking again. At this point my only option is to use my extended warranty with a $300 deductible since repairs by carmax are only warrantied for 6 months. If it was fixed right in the first place, I wouldn't have to be spending $300. Be weary when buying from them and be sure to follow up on all "repairs" they do. I must admit that it saddens me to write this review, as I have been a huge fan of CarMax Independence for many years; however, my last experience with CarMax Independence resulted in a world of headache and has made me lose my hope and confidence in CarMax. Please be mindful that the purchase experience was amazing due to Art Maison and Sig Bigleau who are REMARKABLE Sales Reps with the utmost professionalism and customer service skills. However, the issue that I have is not with the Sales Department, but with the Business Center. Long story short, the lack of communication with the Business Center resulted in me being forced to Return and Resale my recently purchased Range Rover in Rhode Island, just so that I could get it registered (which was a business transaction that was supposed to be completed by the CarMax Independence Business Center). Typically, I would take of registering the vehicle myself; however, due to the fact that I purchased my vehicle two days after I returned from my tour in Spain and the day before I had to drive half-way cross country to report to my next duty station in Rhode Island, the CarMax Independence Business Center stated that they would take care of my title, registration and tags. The issue is that it was not addressed until 2 days before my temporary tags expired that my vehicle was never registered and that the tags were never ordered, which placed me in a horrible bind. With that being said, I lost countless hours, a slight change in my excellent credit score (due to constant pulls of my credit score) and hours of driving across Rhode Island and to the Massachussetts Office just to get my vehicle returned, repurchased and registered in the state of Rhode Island, when the CarMax Independence office was supposed to take care of it. As a result, I am extremely disappointed with my experience with the CarMax Independence Business Office and would not recommend anyone to them for future business opportunities. read more
