TLDR: Misleading photos of car, negative initial experience after ordering a car to be shipped,…read moreattempted to reduce initial bid for my trade by $2000, misinformation on transferring personalized plates. GREAT sales associate - awesome guy. Follow-up call the next day fixing the plate issue. I would shop around, don't make Carmax your first choice.
Hi! Thanks for sticking around to read the whole story. This is going to be my experience with Carmax as a company, the finalizing of the sale at the Independence location, and my overall impression. I started this journey over 2 months ago as gas prices started to hit $4 a gallon. I had a paid off 2019 4x4 truck, very nice, MSRP when new was $48,600 before covid. I've always kept it washed, waxed, and well maintained. It had 89,200 mostly highway miles on it, and needed nothing. No rust on any body panels, nothing underneath as far as the body, well cared for, and very minimal parking lot dings, extremely minimal.
I answered all of the Carmax questions, twice, about 2 months apart, very honestly. I reported my 2 fender benders, one of which was a tree falling in my driveway. I found out later that it didn't even count per Carmax's standards. Good to know. Both were repaired at a very great body shop, parts replaced and painted to match perfectly. The original quote of $18,400 was about $2000 more than Carmax's largest competitor. When I got to Carmax however they tried to reduce the bid by $2000 for 'undercarriage rust'. In Missouri? After 7 Missouri winters? You don't say! Apparently, Carmax's competitor had already accounted for that. Thankfully our awesome sales associate had our back, and helped us get our original bid back.
Now to the car we ordered. I found a very nice Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD in Tennessee. It was a 2025, one owner, 22,000 miles. In the original photos they displayed 2 blemishes, a small rock chip that had been fixed with touch-up paint on the hood and some discoloration over the driver's door from going through a carwash. BTW, if you're reading this and drive a Tesla don't go through automatic car washes. Please, just don't. However, after getting the car we found some fairly substantial blemishes that were not photographed. There is a very large scratch in one of the doors, some scratches on the interior seat, the driver's headrest is delaminating and will need replaced, and thanks to the Carmax logo I now have permanent Carmax ghosting on my paint. Why do companies insist on placing dealer logos on paint? I bought a Tesla, not a Carmax. I removed the logo and used some adhesive remover from 3M that is safe for paint, purchased from Auto Body Color. (Nasty stuff, btw, so if you get some BE SURE you follow the label. You MUST wear a respirator to use. It's highly toxic.). I will say the car is comfortable, drives nice, has a great battery, and was only $40,998. I originally went with Carmax because they appeared to have nicer cars. Their competitors cars had more blemishes, but now it seems that their competitor may just be more honest.
Also, Carmax is going to do what every dealer does and try to push you into one of their extended maintenance plans. If you are worried about future repairs you can pay a lot for peace of mind. I chose not to, as I bought a 2025 Tesla with 22,000 miles. I commute nearly 120 miles a day round-trip, and so when my warranty is up I'll be getting the maintenance plan directly from Tesla. As far as I'm concerned my relationship with Carmax ended when I drove off their lot.
I will repeat, our sales guy was awesome. I'm withholding his name because I am only giving 3 stars. If this review was for him alone it would definitely be a 5 star review.
I'm sure by now you want to know about the personalized license plate issue. Last year I got personalized plates for my truck. In Missouri personalized plates belong to the driver and are assigned to the vehicle. They can be transferred to any vehicle you own, car, truck, or suv. When I got to the person that handles the plates, sales tax, and signing all those forms I was rudely told that I could not transfer my plates from my truck to my Model Y because it had to be licensed as a car. He would not listen to me, cut me off while I was talking, talked down to me, and treated me terribly. I could feel the hatred from him, as he talked to this stupid, pathetic old man with the gray beard. It's a good thing someone as pathetic and stupid as myself had his superior intellect to show me how utterly stupid I was because I would have been lost without him. After signing all the papers they had my car all decorated with a giant bow. I didn't care. All I wanted was to get out of there.
The next day a very nice lady called, had fixed the issue, and I'm getting to keep my plates. I'm out of room - that's my story, good luck! Thanks for reading.
