I had never given Carmax a try mostly because I had preferred to purchase cars from larger dealership that carried the car maker's namesake. I finally gave Carmax a try because of the large database without having to jump lots. After my experience, I would NEVER recommend anyone waste his/her time at this location unless expectations are low and other options do not exist. I'm not the most fond of the Franchise overall but I will only relate my review to this location. There were lies and deceit. I first asked the same and to bring in a car from another location, and he refused because he thought he knew what I needed rather than what I wanted. He was aggressive at times and very Intrusive. The lies of how many times he ran my credit was the first be frustration that i confronted the manager about. The managers seemed to have no authority or were lazy because each sent me to another until I finally attempted to call the corporate office and got a customer relation rep. The tires on the car were not satisfactory, especially after being told that they were newer. I lost respect for the service department of this franchise over all. I'd suggest going to a specialist. Any small print is used to get over on the customer rather than appreciating the business. I have a 813 credit score and was offered an 8.45% apr from Carmax financial. What a disgrace. I got it changed to someone else for 3.75 percent. I was told that there were no recalls or issues. That was a lie. Lexus gave me paperwork that showed details on the exact car. They also showed me where Carmax push the bumper to make it seem aligned but everything was off. Fear not, I got everything taken care of and will not go back ever again. They give you the run ar Update 2: I called back today because my temporary tags are expired after buying the car over 2 months ago. I was told that moment that they had to resend my info bc the tax office found an error. Therefore, it may be another 6-8 weeks. I believe they dropped the ball and never sent it in. Carmax got the car to the Southwest location and I have the car I wanted at a fair price. There were a few hiccups along the way, however, Carmax made them right. It was nice to work with G. I am super disappointed with my overall experience with Car max. Waqar was the person who sold me my car. I purchased a convertible but was not shown how to work the drop top. They didn't offer to turn in my dealer plates. I was not given the best customer service. If you want an attentive sales rep keep looking. My next complaint is on the product I received. I took my car for oil change after 2 months and found out I had been given a worn tire and a plugged tire. My service engine light was in as well and I spoke to Andy Garcia (service manager) who with a lack of empathy and no concern took no responsibility for the car and told me to he could do nothing about my tires cause it was out of the 30 day window and told me to take car to warranty for work that needed to be done... DO NOT purchase a car from this location (Southwest freeway) because they don't care about their customers and don't care about making things right .I will be filing a formal complaint. I just spent 400 bucks on new tires for my car on a car I bought 2 months ago. Lauren the business manager was nice and tried to help me but Andy shut everything down and offered no help. Lady came out with singing paper work ready to buy the car and another lady told her that car max upper management decided to not do business with your type of people. Well holy shit, wouldn't you think it would save the both of us time, effort and energy if we knew from the beginning that you didn't want to buy our vehicle? But nooo they want to drag out this process longer than it needs to. First look and offer letter done to the car was on Saturday. Brought car back on Monday because they are close on Sunday. On Monday they said they need to re do the appraisal letter for some stupid reason. Okay fine waste more time. It's cool but if he original letter from Saturday is still valid for 7 days. Okay clearly can't read or lack of communication. Possibly both. Monday, got a new (2nd appraisal) done on vehicle. Came back $500 more than original offer. Cool making the customer happy for all time and trouble wasted. Closing table, all paper work ready to sign and last min the lady comes in and say oh unfortunately management decided that we can not do business with you... we are not buying your car... well shit non of this makes any logical sense to me. Why did you waste me and my moms time. Going back and forth to this incompetent dealership for the past 3 days. 2 offer letter later, and then decide not to buy the car. To dumb things down more. Came to this location to get my vehicle appraised. Called ahead to make an appointment. By the time I drove and got there.. When I walked inside there were like 20 sales associates standing there yet no one said anything. One lady approached me and she was nice asking me what I needed. By the way, that's intimidating when you have that many people standing at the entrance all eyes on a customer. Kind of makes you want to turn around and run Bc you feel like they are about to play tug of war with you over a car sale. Anywho.. After walking in, no one knew what I spoke about when I said an appointment for a car appraisal and they passed looks around like who was going to help me. When they assigned some dude to do it... DO NOT BUY A CAR FROM THIS TERRIBLE PLACE!!! I bought a 06 Honda Accord. Great condition everything was fine when I first bought it. Then after a month problems started to come out and their service department fixed them with no problem with their one month warranty. One of the issues was my radiator having a leak, so they replaced it. Now after 11 months, I found out that they installed a goddamn defective part and I called them thinking they will help me with this problem and maybe even just let me know where they bought the part from so I can exchange it. DO NOT BUY!!! I was sold a car that immediately needed new brakes. After two failed attempts they finally got the repair right. A month after the purchase I needed a new headlight (which I can understand) but was then told by the mechanic that my car had been in an accident before. It's interesting that it was never mentioned on the carfax they were so quick to present. Now here I am 9 months after the car purchase and the breaks are once again grinding. I called and was told they only have a 6 month/3000 mile guarantee on their repairs. They're tactic is to say whatever they can to sell you a car and have you deal with the problems later. I have sold 3 cars to Carmax in the past, and on my most recent visit I was there to get my truck appraised. My sales consultant was Gloria, and she was awesome! She was super friendly, and I really enjoyed working with her. She walked me through everything, and she made my visit a wonderful experience. I had a number in mind based up Kelly Blue Book, and Carmax offered me considerably more. I do not know why anyone would ever trade a car in at a dealership; Carmax will always offer you more money. This the second car I've sold to Carmax. I sold my MINI Cooper here last weekend. They offered me considerably more than what a local Mazda dealer was offering me for trade in. I came in late, 8ish. I left around 9:30pm, bank check in hand. They showed me the times for people how long they waited all day on that day, most were 15-20 minutes. I waited for a solid 45-60 minutes. I suppose that's typical at the end of the day, I'm not sure. They finally gave me the offer at 9:00pm. We ran to the back to make sure they could still take care of me that night -- really appreciated that. Pro tip for selling your car: get your car professionally cleaned and / or detailed. The shinier better looking you make it, the more money it will get. Make it shine. My dad used to work for Carmax, and told me paying the extra money to get the car really cleaned was worth it. Walk in with title and both keys (if it has both keys). Overall, a great experience, as usual. Just took longer than it did previously. Also the waiting room was unimpressive. I have shopped at other Carmax's before and have had great experiences, but the salesman we had here (can't remember the name unfortunately) was so terrible I wrote a complaint to the company (when prompted to give customer satisfaction survey). I was not seeking a response, just thought they should know how their employee was representing the company. Throughout our consultation and test drives, the salesman interjected his political beliefs, preached about religion and morals, and argued with us about our opinions on the car and other matters. Much of the first test-drive was spent listening to him rant about how evil Walmart and anyone who shops there is. I went another time with a friend and specifically requested to NOT have this employee, and though I didn't remember his name, when I started to describe the experience the other employees knew exactly who I was talking about. If the company is aware of this person's behavior, they should take action to make sure it does not continue instead of letting it go on. We did not end up buying a car there, and I would not shop there again. read more

Called the dealership and was told that there was a problem with the title and then a problem with them paying the correct fees. First of all, I was never told anything about the problems. After reading Yelp reviews, I was really unsure of what to expect when visiting CarMax. I can honestly say that I was pleased with my entire experience. I made an appointment on a Saturday evening to have my car appraised. Prior to the appraisal, I did a little research to get an idea of the value of my car. Of course, I also reminded myself that using CarMax was GREATLY saving me time and dealing with crazies by trying to sell my car on my own. That alone is worth getting less money for the actual vehicle. After I scheduled my appointment online, Super Dave (that's what he calls himself!) called me within an hour to confirm my appointment, explain the process, tell me what I needed to bring if I decided to sell my car, and asked if I had any questions. I arrived for my appointment and couldn't believe the size of the place. They really do have a huge inventory of vehicles if you are looking for a used car. I already had purchased a new car, so I was only looking to sell my car. After a quick appraisal of my vehicle (probably 30 minutes), they had the offer ready for my review. They offered me the exact price that I expected! The salesman reminded me again that this is based on the expect appraisal and I had seven days to decide if I wanted to accept the offer. I didn't need seven days to decide I wanted to get rid of my car, so I accepted and he swiftly walked us down the hall to another department to sign over the title, get the check draft for the vehicle and wrap-up the sale. I think that took about another 30 minutes. In about an hour, we were on our way. If I hadn't been so intent on purchasing a NEW car (I know, stupid), then I would definitely used this place for a used car. They had cars on display in the store that were 2014 models and with very few miles. While we were waiting on the appraisal, the salesman showed us some of the cars online and explained that if we were looking for something specific they didn't have onsite, they could bring it in for us (I believe at some sort of cost). The man was definitely interested in this. We found that some new 2014 models were on sale with less than 10k miles and at a pretty good discounted price in comparison to the new sticker price. I recently was forced into buying a newer car as my 2003 Toyota 4Runner had 320,000 miles on it. It was a great car that rarely gave me any issues certainly no major ones. I decided to start out at Carmax located on 59 Northbound side after u-turn at Bellaire exit. I was pleasantly greeted by my salesperson Dat Nguyen (Dustin). He was very nice and extremely helpful in every possible way. I didn't feel pressured and I do like the no haggle process they have because their cars are very fairly priced. We looked at several cars and I decided on one and then bc of my issues they ended up having to hang onto the car for almost two weeks but they did without any harassment whatsoever. I would definitely recommend Dat Nguyen and CarMax to I am writing this because I recommended CarMax to someone and they got a vehicle transferred to Tyler TX at the Carmax there. I went with them to get their vehicle and was extremely pleased to see someone else treated with the same respect and kindness as was shown to me. This is my first time selling a car, so I've got no comparison, but the experience here was really pleasant. We just got a brand new car, instead of trading-in my old Camry, we decided to keep it for a little while before I got used to the other car. It turned out alright so we wanted to sell it asap. Both of us know nothing about selling cars personally, so we figure we'll do it the easy way. Though the price might be lower, it can save us tons of trouble. I used to have a dealer friend told me if I sell it myself my 2005 120,000 miles Camry may still worth $6500-7000 since it's in really good condition, which everyone drove it agreed. And I looked it up on KBB, it said the trade-in price ranged from 4500-6000, I think I can take that. So one Monday, without appointment, I drove to Carmax for an appraisal and planned to sell it if the offer is good. The parking was a little bit confusing, since they have a huge lot, and one third of it was reserved for "service only". So I picked a random spot. Later I learnt that if you're here for appraisal, parking near the entrance will be most convenient for both you and the appraiser. The place looked nice, and the minute I walked in a sales representative greeted me. When he learnt what I was here for, he told me it'll take probably 45 mins. He found an appraiser for my car, and took me into one of those cubics to explain to me what's gonna happen next. Also he asked me if I'd like to buy any car today. I've always wanted a yellow Beetle, so he helped me browsed the inventory for a while. When we're done he told me I can wait in the lobby, fine by me. The appraisal took less than 45 mins I think, when he called my name and handed me a packet with the offer. $5000 was actually a little bit lower than my expectation, but acceptable. Without hesitation I decided to sell it. The next step is checkout. After another sales representative took care of the paperwork, I moved my car to the Service area and took all the belonging out. Suddenly a sad feeling hit me, maybe I'm just too sentimental, but selling the car is like saying goodbye to those days and memories... More paperwork followed, but I'm actually pretty happy, b/c if I'm selling the car on my own, who knows how much time it will take for me to figure out all these paperwork and stuff... The hubby-to-be stopped by during his lunch break to pick me up, and we waiter here for about 10 mins before the paperwork was finally done. We got a copy of all the paperwork and a bank statement. The whole process took about one hour, we felt so relieved and we're happy we chose Carmax. Just a small tip, browse their website before you go if you're planning to sell, you'll need some ID, title, and other stuff if it's more complicated, and the website has a list of everything you need. I'm giving Carmax 5 stars this time because the sales associate and business office associate that helped us made all the difference. Carmax is supposed to be hassle free car buying without the haggling. The price listed on the car is the final price, no haggling required or allowed. I don't know about you but I personally hate the typical car salesman. They point you out to the more expensive cars, they push you to test drive it, they make you fall in love with it and keep telling you that you can afford it and then......you sit down to do the financing and realize that you can't afford it. So you just wasted my time for nothing. This time I was prepared. I wanted them to run my finances first and tell me what price range I should be looking at with the monthly note I had in mind that I knew I could afford. Basically, is my interest rate going to be descent, good or bad. So, thank goodness for Lisset Gonzalez. She listened to my concerns and needs and she helped me figure out what price range to look at. She did all this for me online and via phone so I didn't have to waste any time driving in traffic. Once she helped me find my price range, my husband and I started our online searches. It was so easy. We even downloaded the free Carmax app. It let us plug in the price range, mileage max, year range, type of car, etc. Then it gives you all the vehicles that fit your criteria. They will even transfer them for free from other Carmax stores within 250 miles. We did most our car shopping online and narrowed our search to a handful of vehicles we wanted to look at. One of the ones we really wanted to see was at the SW Freeway Carmax where Lisset works. She showed it to us & we liked what we saw. We test drove it and loved how it drove. We already knew we could afford it so no disappointments this time. And when it came to the paperwork part, since Lisset already had all our information it was even easier and faster. She was never pushy, was always friendly and helpful. She explained everything to us. We also had the pleasure of dealing with Barna in the business office. She was also very friendly and professional. She explained all the paperwork we had to sign. She made the whole process painless. Thank you Lisset and Barna! Person getting signatures did not get all needed,,,, and it took days for them to call to say I forgot to sign. It is the responsibility of the Car Max representative to be certain all documents are signed before the customer leaves. Also, the detailing of the cars should be spot checked by managers to see what kind of work is leaving the lot. Interior was not well done. I had to take home and clean myself. read more

They also fixed all that was needed on the vehicle prior to ensure that they were selling me quality. This is my third time shopping with them and they have always pleased. I had a fairly good experience here. With Carmax, since there is no haggle - find the person with the BEST service. Our family has bought 3-4 cars and traded in likewise - Roy Turner has never failed to miss a phone call in the many years we have worked with him. I also was not satisfied with my car and used the 5 day return policy to find a different cat in the lot. Overall a good experience, - but beware of the fact that the cars MOVE FAST. You will be looking at a car and it will be sold while you are deliberating, be sure to have them hold it for a while if you are serious about buying. read more

I went in for an appraisal and while I tried to seek out one recommendation from a previous yelper, he wasn't available so I took my chances. I was greeted/helped by Steve Carroll. I highly recommend him. He was very professional and completely fulfilled all my requests. Granted I told him I was there to get my car appraised and that was it. Either way, I was afraid to go in there and have my car completely low balled. It wasn't. I was highly surprised that my car was appraised for the value they gave me. It was way higher than any dealerships I've contacted (2 others) even with their reputation of appraising at a much lower rate than kbb or edmunds. I was outta there in less than 30 mins. Last Wednesday I went into this location and purchased my first car from a dealership. Peter helped me and was great! He spent hours with my mom and I looking over cars and letting us test drive multiple vehicles and not once did I ever feel slightly pressured into anything. I was very straight forward with him in what I wanted and what my budget was and I left there with a vehicle that I love! I was also very honest with him about the cars I didn't like. I test drove a Kia Soul that was absolutely fiiilthy inside. I told him not to let anyone else drove this until they cleaned it again because they would probably leave on the spot. I went to this Carmax three separate occasions in the course of about 2 weeks because I was totally unsure of the type of car I wanted to buy. I worked mostly with Jeffrey (with some great help from Jose and Erica when Jeffrey had to be out of town!) who was super friendly and incredibly accommodating. I brought my mom and sister along with me on separate occasions and they were made to feel at home as well. At no point did I ever feel pressured to buy into a car and Jeffrey was more than happy to answer any questions I had along the way without hesitation - he even personally ordered a car for me to be shipped from a different location which ended up being the one that I purchased in the end. Why does CarMax even bother with allowing holds of the employees hate holds and discourage you from using it? I live in CA so naturally I needed to hold the car for 5 days (max is 7) so I could get it inspected and transferred. Jeff Lincoln harassed me about it the entire time. Safe to buy but not to drive... Yesterday we looked at a Town & Country van, after searching the lot twice we found it buried behind other cars in the back lot. Beautiful van with only 35k miles priced at the very top of the retail blue book value. My problem was the tires had never been rotated and the front tires were in dire shape and needed replaced. The sales person forwarded us to the sales manager George. George checked out the tires and gave a spill about Carmax only replaces tires below 4/32s tread depth but he would take it around to the service shop to check out and reevaluate. 30 minutes later they will not replace the tires, George then asked are you going on a road trip in it?, yes we live 10 hours away, George then told us then we needed to pick another vehicle because this one would not be safe. So I asked "The van is safe to sell, but not to drive?" Once again George said yes you will need to choose another vehicle, which we did today at great dealership in the Woodlands. WHAT A JOKE! I bought my car back in November and it's a lemon! I have tried numerous times to reach them about my license plates and they stated they mailed them. NOPE! When I asked what I should do, they told me it wasn't their problem any longer and to contact my local tax office. When I purchased the car, it was TERRIBLE service- they are not worth your time. Lawrence the senior sales manager was excellent and manage to get me a great deal on a car and the entire transaction took less than 2 hours which was awesome. However my customer service experience got even better on Monday when I came back with my car because it has been vandalized over the weekend in Galveston and two of my tires have been slit . I recently purchase a vehicle from this location on 11/1/19. I must say I was extremely disappointed at the customer service displayed by two of the sales rep. I wish I would have went back to the Richmond location. They're customer service was superb and they inquired about what you the customer was looking for. Unlike the SW location the two male representatives were only interested in making a sales. I was appointed a male dominant sales rep who was from another country spoke to me in a very demeaning manor very dominant and aggressive. I request another rep and proceeded to the front desk. The rep followed me in a sorta bullying manner. The clerk gave me another male. He was ok. A little better but not much. I purchased the car. The car was not washed, the inside was not cleaned, the trunk was not cleaned. Unlike the Richmond location, they went over the features, they took a picture and most importantly it was cleaned. It has only been a month and half and the car started having engine problems. I returned the car back due the fact it was under warranty. As of this writing, I am waiting for the diagnosis. I hate car shopping but this place makes it as easy as it can probably be. I have purchased two cars from them and sold one. The appraisal and sale procedure is efficient if you are selling them your old car. I was there on President's Day and they were pretty busy, but I did not have to wait very long. I did not use their financing, so I can't review that aspect of their business. The car wash was down the day we bought the car, so they had to hand wash - it took some time, but the car was spotless. read more

My daughter just got her very first car from CarMax on Southwest Fwy at the end of March 2022. She has been having issues with it ever since. Her coolant and check engine lights came on about a month after she bought the car. I called up there and gave them a piece of my mind, because the service department told her that they couldn't get to her car for at least two weeks! So, I had to go through a lot of red tape to get to someone who could help. Finally, my daughter was able to get her car fixed (the thermostat was bad); she used a rental for a little over a week. After that, we thought all was well with the car. Yesterday, her check engine and coolant lights came on again, and her A/C is blowing hot air. Now, we have to try to get this fixed, again! I'm so disappointed and upset with this car company. My daughter's first car experience has turned into a complete nightmare! I'll never get another car from CarMax again! read more
