I went to carmax to purchase a new used vehicle that i found online. Long story short I got the vehicle that I wanted and I'm going to keep it. However, I am rating Carmax low because the verification process, contrary to the lies they tell on their website, they tank your credit score. In 2020, during the pandemic, my credit plunged into the toilet for numerous reasons. Over the past two and a half years I've worked very hard to repair my score. Well, the salesman, Rey, told me that Carmax requires a soft credit pull. I approved it and was approved for financing. Well, he then told me that a hard pull was needed... I know what hard pulls can do so I rejected at first. Rey told me he couldn't proceed without a hard pull. I relented and allowed it. The hard pull dropped my score 30 points, literally. It was on my credit seconds later. All the work I had done for two years was for nothing. It went from good back to fair... So **** carmax for that and I will never go back to them for another vehicle, ever. read more

They completely forgot about me for more than 30 minutes. I was the only one in the waiting area, and there were many sales members walking around the floor and hanging out with each other. No one came to check on me. When I finally said something, the management would not allow me to drive the car because I did not have a declaration form. The website only mentions a selfie, insurance card, and drivers license. Because I am not the policy holder, my insurance company could not give me a declaration. All in all, I highly recommend carmax to update their website for a clearer customer journey and also be watchful of guests. Also as a test driver, come in prepared with the declaration form. I bought my car on 11/22 in Kennesaw, Ga while visiting my sister. I took it in twice while I was there because when I backed up there was a squeak. The squeak subsided for a while due to the work they had done but when I got back to Texas the squeak had turned to a grind. I took my car in. I took my car to the service department and expected the standard 'mechanic' service. I was confused for a second. I thought I was at the concierge desk of the Waldorf Astoria. The new guy, Earl, treated me like I was driving a Bentley. I don't know where he got his customer service training but it is 'old school.' I felt like he should be wearing white gloves. I spoke to Tammy and got similar service. Earl said "I will call you tomorrow with a follow up, to confirm that your part is ordered and again when it arrives." Guess what happened... Exactly what Earl said would happen, like clockwork. He also called me the day after the work was done to make sure I was happy. That has NEVER happened at any other service department or auto shop. One of my friends is in the car biz and told me to go ahead and get my car outside evaluated first before getting the dealership prices for a trade in to see what the variations are. I first used Kelly Blue Book to get an estimate. I had seen carmax commercials plenty of times but never really knew what they were all about. I called in ahead of time and spoke to Ben. He answered a few basic questions and I was headed there to meet him in person. He was very helpful by getting my car apprasied and walking me through what carmax was all about. I must say the car buying experience has changed drastically. It's not high tough sales but more honest talking through. The only thing I was unhappy about was their price they offered. It was quite below what others were offering but they say it's due to the local market. Their quote is good for 7 days and they ONLY have USED cars, I didn't know that before today. read more

I was getting my car appraised and was expecting maybe the lowest Kelly Bluebook value (meaning in fair condition, not great or perfect), however Carmax wanted $2000 less than that. I could easily sell it myself for $3000 more for what they offered. If I do a search for my car on craiglists or private dealers, they are selling at least $5000 more than what Carmax offered. Talk about major profit for Carmax! Other than that, the staff is not too bad and they aren't too persistant. The appraisal process took about 35-40 minutes. We purchased a 2020 BMW X3 from them and had it shipped in from Reno Nevada. It was advertised with the Executive package. After trips to the local bmw dealership, it was determined this vehicle was missing $7,000 in packages including the Executive Package. They did accept the return but would not reimburse me for the costs of taking it to my mechanic and the bmw dealership to verify the package was not built into the vehicle. If I had not noticed this, I would have paid $7,000 too much. The cost they sold it at was $39,000. The vin is 5UXTY5C03L9B57523. Do not purchase this car unless it is being sold for 33k or less. They lost a lot of money paying the previous owner more than it was worth and they may now try to still recoup their losses. I got my car back from CarMax. They sent it to 2 Lexus dealerships because it is a hybrid that has not been getting the fuel efficiency it should get. CarMax is not equipped to deal with such problems. Which is fine; I like that they did not even try; I like that it was sent to Lexus, the experts for my particular car. When I left my car, I had decided I hated it; it was a lemon; it was a 7 year old car and not performing like it should; it was not even my style; what was I thinking!? I wanted a different car. Since having my car returned to me, things have changed. My serviceman at CarMax, Terry, is the reason! When I spoke with him and told him how disenchanted I was with my car (a 2012 Lexus CT 200h). He told me loves my car; he said he drove it himself to the Lexus dealership and really enjoyed it. He made me feel like I was nuts for not loving it too! At the same time, he could understand my concerns regarding fuel efficiency. He completely embodies the ideal serviceman! CarMax should hold on to him! When I picked up my car, I thanked Terry and told him service like he provides is rare these days and I really appreciate him. He was so professional and kind and he took care of the problem! The other car I own is a 2016 Ford Mustang I bought new from Gullo Ford in Conroe. When I bought the car, I also bought a maintenance plan and extended warranty, their top of the line products. When the clutch was burned out (my husband downshifts rather than using neutral to preserve function), I sent it to Gullo. They told me the clutch would not be covered. I argued and told them it would be. I also made sure they knew I was in no hurry to get the car back (they bank on this!) because my son, away for Marine training, had a car I could use. Anyway, for a month they argued...finally, I called the people who managed the warranties and service products I purchased. I asked why my claim was denied. They told me there had been no claim submitted. I asked how to submit the claim. They told me I could not; it had to be submitted by the car dealership. I was so mad! Gullo has not even tried! They MISSPOKE on behalf of the warranty/service providers when they said the clutch was not covered; they submitted the claim and guess what!? It was covered and paid in full! So, when I tell you I value my Car Max experience, trust me(!), it is service you will not get other places (AFTER your purchase). I will never buy brand new again and I will never go anywhere except CarMax. I know I paid more than I should have, but it is worth it to not have to deal with the bull$hit of others'. If I could give zero stars to this business, I wouldn't do it. I'd still be looking for negative stars. To start, when my wife and I arrived at the dealership, the salesman who asked to help us, was dressed in shorts and carried himself very unprofessional. I should have taken this into account and asked for someone else, but I figured Ii'd see how things play out. Red flag number 2 was how the salesman sat in his chair like it was a recliner. I figured he must be very comfortable with us as customers, so once again, I ignored the signs. It was all down hill from there. I test drive a car that I had shipped to Houston. I explained what my concerns were before I purchased the car and the salesman agreed to address the issues. Days went by and I never heard back from him. When I did follow up, he lied about resolving the issue. He then proceeded to get me to move forward with buying the car without my wife. A day later, someone from sales called me again and agreed to resolve the issues before I bought the car. Nope, they didn't follow up and a day later, the car was sold. I never heard back from either of the people who I dealt with at the dealership. As such, I ended up buying a much better car at a more professional dealership for BMW. I'm glad the salesman at Carmax was terrible as I ended up with a better deal. I will never set foot in this Carmax ever again. I strongly suggest that management reconsider who they are willing to hire. I have lots of clients and I'll be sure to share this experience every time I get the opportunity to do so. I am very disappointed with the service and the quality of the automobile that I purchased from Scott at this CarMax location. We bought three vehicles cash at $17,000 a piece and one of them was a Dodge ProMaster van which the engine started smoking and was very damaged when we purchased it. We were unable to detect this at first because they had filled it up with coolant so that it did not come to our attention until after we had dropped the car off to have a $3,000 wrap put on it and when we picked up the automobile then we detected the engine problems. I went last night to look at a Hyndai Equus. First off they use autochek instead of Carfax. It's a cheaper version of carfax and doesn't have hardly any details. We walked in and you have to go through the large atrium. There is no walking the lot beforehand. We were greeted and told to sit down and they would see if the car is still available. I was pretty sure it was since it's been for sale since November 2019. The salesperson looked it up and said they still had it and that it had been wrecked previously. My wife immediately said no. I was always under the impression that the big selling point with Carmax is we don't sell wrecked vehicles. I was told this applies to frame damage only. Anyway walked out to the lot and looked at the car. Not the best I have seen but not the worst. Had three different brands of tires on it and no kind of service history. Looking at the sticker I was shocked to see interest rates at 20% for "challenged credit" they obviously cater to a different clientele as I pay 1.99% through my credit union. I bought a car from this carmax about 4 months ago - they showed me a "report" saying the car has been in no accidents, my personal mechanic has told me it has definitely been wrecked due to a bent control arm and work on the engine. Also after about 2 weeks of driving the car I noticed the breaks making noise and the gears were shifting weird - I set up an appointment to bring it to the dealership, they said there's nothing wrong with the transmission - and the "front brakes are new so they might have a glaze build up" mind you I had to drive an hour to the dealership, wait around for 4 hours to hear they weren't fixing anything, so essentially wasted an entire day. I took the car to my mechanic to get my oil changed and he said the BACK brakes were almost done for and there was a small oil leak (causing my gears to shift weird) I had to pay out of pocket for the repairs because of carmax's negligence. I've purchased 2 cars here over the course of the last 7 years. The service was good, as long as you already have your own financing. The only reason I say that is just to tell people that maybe don't know, that you should obtain approval with a bank or credit union so you don't get crazy interest rates, or feel pressure to commit to a vehicle you don't love. Both cars from there served me well. Another piece of advice: try to sell your own car privately first, because I traded in my first car I bought from them for $1700 and I payed 10k for it. It wasn't in the best repair, and it was a cheap car to start with, but that's just more advice if you're struggling with buying a new car. I've bought two cars here in the past... it's been 10+ years though. The inside of the showroom has been remodeled into a giant sea of desks with no cars on display. It looks very cheap and not inviting. I asked to see a car that I saw online and then was shown the actual car outside and I was shocked at how filthy the car was inside and outside. Really bad. The sales person said they had it since January so they've had time to clean it up (me excuse). I decided to leave and look elsewhere since this just seemed like their management had lowered expectations and I sure don't want to buy a car from a place that clearly has declined and have any issues. read more
