I purchased a 2010 Honda Civic two weeks ago, and traded in a beat-up Saturn. All is well in my auto world, and I'm happy with my CarMax experience. I had done a fair amount of research online before visiting this location. I knew which 3 cars I wanted to see. It was Saturday morning, and I did not have an appointment, but a salesman met with me within 15 minutes of my arrival. During the time I waited, I was out on the lot looking at the cars I had chosen ahead of time, and looked at a couple others that seemed to meet my requirements. The salesman assigned to me, Alan, was accommodating and helpful. We test drove a Toyota Yaris, which I didn't like at all, and the Honda I eventually purchased. I would have purchased the car that day, but I was planning to purchase it outright - no financing - and the banks close early on Saturday. I couldn't arrange the cashier's check that day. My only complaint with the whole CarMax experience is that they wouldn't hold the car for me -- with money down, of course -- until Tuesday. Fast forward to Tuesday. I called Alan and said, is the Honda still available? It was. I ended up making everything happen Tuesday afternoon with the money. CarMax handled all the paperwork. I showed up with my old car, the title, and a cashier's check. An hour later, I drove home in my new Honda. There are several things that made this experience minimally painful. No hard sell from the salesman, or any member of the sales staff. They told me what they would do, what I needed to do (title, $$, proof of insurance), and they handled all the paperwork. They gave me the registration for the Honda, they arranged for my license plate to be transferred, and they had the Honda cleaned, oiled, and gassed up. And the no negotiation/just pay this price just made my life a whole lot less stressful. I like my new car. I like that the whole sale process took an hour. I like that I could shop online. I like that there was no bullshit. The free coffee could have been of a higher quality, but hey, I'm a coffee snob. It was a good experience. I would consider using CarMax again - though, with a Honda with low mileage, I'm not planning to be in the market for a new car for a very long time! read more

I bought my first Carmax vehicle in (approx?) 2000. It was a 98 Toyota Corolla. My parents still have that car and it is running pretty well! I actually used this original car when my current car was in the shop recently and it was reliable in getting me to and from work! I had been entertaining buying a new car for about 6 months. My friend, this last Spring, bought a car from Winston in Glencoe. I went with her (fellow Yelper Sarah-jayne M.) The experience brought back all the memories as to why Carmax is different: no games, no pressure -just good customer service! When I saw the 2013 Toyota Prius that I had been wanting (black exterior with black leatherette interior), it had 13 views! I knew I had to jump on this if I wanted to score this car! I saw the same car in IN a few weeks earlier and it was sold in two days! I called right away and spoke to Carlos Avila. I was so relieved to find out that they could transfer the car to IL (it was in WI) so I could see it and drive it before fully committing to the purchase. The whole process was super easy. My phone call was Saturday and the car was ready on Monday! I "met" my car on Tuesday and it was love at first sight! (ha ha) Seriously, I really love this car and am so happy with the entire process and my purchase. I cannot say enough good things about the Glencoe Carmax -between my friend's recent purchase and mine. I had finance / documentation guy Will and he was super nice as well. Everything was explained very well and in even better detail when I asked questions. I highly recommend requesting Durand to help you, too, if you decide to use Carmax. He was very professional and kind and also made us laugh. He was patient as I made my decisions about things. We did we have to wait a while for someone to help us with the final paperwork. (It was explained that at night and in the winter they have less staff working.) 29 days after I purchased the vehicle, I was hit and the car was totaled. State Farm paid me a total loss for the market value of the car which was $1803 less than what Carmax sold it to me for. (Historically, State Farm has always overpaid me for totaled cars; they paid me more years after owning them than what I originally purchased it for.) I asked both the Glencoe location and customer service/HQ in Virginia if they'd be willing to give me any credit off on my next car that I wanted to purchase through them via Durand (he's seriously so awesome), but they were unwilling to compensate me anything. I'm sorry to see Durand lose my family's business (we've purchased 4 cars from them in 2 years) but their no haggle/rip off/no belief in customer loyalty, etc. has left me very bitter. This location has the worst service. I wanted to trade in a vehicle for a different one. I was choosing between two vehicles. They were both Jeep Patriots, one was at the Glencoe location and the other was in Ohio for $1000 more. I like the one in Ohio better but I got the payment information for the first one and the salesman told me the payments would be $240 a month which is less than I'm paying for my car now, so I thought that was great. The Jeep in Ohio had more features that I wanted so I decided to pay $100 to have it shipped, because I figured with an additional $1000 it shouldn't jump the monthly payments up much more than the other Jeep. It took a MONTH to get the Jeep from Ohio because somehow they lost the title. I had to have my vehicle appraised twice and they told me at CarMax they couldn't guarantee that the appraisal would be the same the second time, even though it was in no way my fault the car took a month to get to their location. Then, after three trips to their location, finally the car arrives just for the same salesman to tell me the monthly payment is now $460 a month, with an expected down payment of almost $3000. When I said how is it possible it changed that much when there was only a $1000 difference in the car, the salesman didn't give much of an answer. I wrote a follow up email the next day to the salesman because I just couldn't understand how this happened. I asked multiple questions, and the response I got was less than helpful. He seemed aggressive and didn't answer any of my questions. When I wrote a review on their website, I got a call from someone at the location because he wanted to talk about the review. He asked me to call on a specific day but didn't leave me an extension. I called that day, and sat on hold for 30 minutes, twice! I didn't have an extension to give so I had to try to get to their customer service line. Waited an hour and didn't get through. I bought my first car at the CarMax in Oak Lawn and they had much better service. Go there, or go to a different sales place altogether. read more

Ooookay people. I have spent the past two weeks (nearly full time) car shopping. This is the only review I will write about my car shopping experience. Here's what happened. Initially I found the car I wanted at Carmax, so I emailed about it. To be honest I had emailed about 15 other guys also, and many became pushy, fast. Eww. And then there was Keith Tennyson from Carmax. He was not at all pushy, and thats the reason I decided to make the drive from Logan to Glencoe. On the phone, Keith seemed like a good dude. Turns out homeboy's a young father of two, he's very organized, honest, and he knows his stuff. There were also two intern-types there with us whom Keith was training, throughout the process. Kinda cute. Turned out that Carmax had the exact color I wanted at a different store, so Keith (tho he would surely have loved to seal the deal on the spot) arranged the black one to be shipped out to Glencoe for no charge. As luck would have it, it was Carmax's "Trade In Value" that killed my deal--I would have loved to buy the car from Keith, but $9K for my trade? I got $1.5K more for it at another dealer (and was offered $11.5K at a third shop). But of the 10 sales guys I worked with throughout this process, Keith Tennyson at Carmax is the best by far. We had a highly enjoyable, easy, and very pleasant experience at CarMax Glencoe today. Ask for Keith Tennyson - he was very kind, fully transparent and professional. In fact, everyone we encountered was very kind. The service was also very quick yet thorough. Within two hours we test drove a new car, turned in our old car and drove a new one off the lot. We even had some scratches on the car that they tried to fix on the spot and Keith didn't like how they turned out so they set up an off-sight appointment to have the scratches fixed on CarMax. I ordered my car online on 9/8 and was told it would be ready for pickup on 9/29. I paid to have it shipped upon order. No communication from Carmax so I called on 9/21and was told the car was at the pickup location and would be ready on the 9/29. Called on 9/29 and was told I could not pick up because Carmax did not have the title. Called again the morning 10/2 and spoke to the worst customer service person ever. She told me the car just came in the day before, had no title and would not be ready until 10/5 at the earliest. I asked to speak with a manager and she became upset and said they don't connect customers to managers. She said a manger would call me at some point but not the same day. After speaking to this "customer service" person I decided to cancel the order. The experience started off great and became the worst car buying experience ever. I am reviewing this location purely on it's repair shop. I had to have several repairs to my car & although the staff was friendly it took forever for them to complete any of the work. Time and time again they would blame it on the warranty company or needing to order parts. Any other shops I've brought my car to never had any issues such as these. Also, they latterly had my car in the shop for a month, a month! and never offered up a loaner vehicle. There is no reason at all they should have taken that long for a standard repair. Also, they would claim that some of the issues I was experiencing with my vehicle were not able to be recreated by their staff and in turn a week later I would have to bring my car back yet again. If you have a CarMax warranty I highly suggest paying the extra $25 to have it repair at the shop of your choice. read more

What doesn't seem fair is when you miss the 7-day guarantee on the estimate (no condition changes to your vehicle)and they come up with false records pretending to have missed something in your prior assessment. Than after admitting to have made an honest mistake not adjusting value on assessment and stating "market change" as the reason to the decrease of 20% on your assessment. Sounds like leveraging to me. Always transact on the first visit. read more

I never thought I would have an enjoyable time buying a used car... After visiting multiple dealers and being told "You have to be willing to pay $XXX monthly to have a newer car." My hopes and dreams of getting a new ride were pretty much demolished. My fiance and I had driven 30 miles out of our way to go to a dealership that told us "you have good credit, but you have never bought a car. 13% apr. Sorry. Not." On our sulky, rainy drive back to the city, high in the sky was a big bright sign that read "Carmax". J: "Do you want to try there?" D: "No. Not really. But, yes." We pull off the highway, park easily in the lot, and are greeted by the best car salesman I have ever met, Jerry. At first glance, Jerry reminded us of Eddy Murphy, and once we started talking, could have sworn they must be related. Funny, relaxed, not pushy at all Jerry scrolled through the computer system, found us a few cars that fit our budget, and answered any and all questions we had. They had a Nissan Versa on the lot that fit our budget and size requirements. He let us test drive the car and respected our opinion when we said it was too "vanilla" for us. We went back inside and looked on the computer a little more. We then saw a car... perfect color, perfect price, perfect brand, not so perfect mileage, but it didn't have 160,000+ miles so it's new enough for us. Jerry immediately had the car ordered for a transfer for us to test drive it. We did a financing check, again, 13% APR. But Jerry offered some words of wisdom in telling us we should get a loan from our own bank. He would be more than happy to call tomorrow when the car came in so we could test drive. We went to our bank. Got our 4.39% APR loan. Got our IDEAL (Actually better than we expected) car payments. Went back the next day, signed some papers, and drove home with a new car. Plates, title, everything ready to go. Jerry never pushed us to do anything we didn't want to. He let the car sell itself since he knew that WE knew what we wanted. Of course, he showed us a few features we didn't know about and were even more excited about it. But I really appreciated his relax approach to selling us the car. He was totally honest with us, gave us options, and answered every question he could like a true pro. We left feeling as clean as we were when we had arrived. No post-salesman corner shower cries for us. It's been a month. I'm still totally satisfied with everything. And if you ever need someone to buy a car from, go to Jerry. He is the best. read more

DO NOT SHOP HERE! They WILL sell your car even if you have a purchase agreement and it is on hold. I had a car shipped to me from a Michigan location and put on hold until my credit union check came in through the mail. I called 2 days prior to going in to discuss home delivery, nobody said anything about my car being sold. Ultimately, I ended up going to the store to drop off the check. It was then that the customer service rep informed me that the car had already sold 3 DAYS PRIOR. No notice, no phone call, nothing. Meanwhile, I had already purchased insurance for this car (Carmax required this for home delivery. Still no word that my car had sold at that point) and now have to undergo my approval process with my credit union all over again for a new car. The sales manager (older bald dude with glasses) was not gracious about this at all. I received no apology or explanation except "looks like the customer service center messed up." Will not be shopping here ever, and I will discourage everyone from purchasing from Carmax. Nightmare of an experience. read more

I've bought 2 cars from CarMax in Glencoe, IL. Both times were pleasant experiences. The cars have never had a major problem. In one instance, a tire was loosing air (it had a screw in it) and Carmax service fixed it for free even though I was beyond the 30-day free warranty period. I shopped prices of the cars we bought with local car dealers, eBay and CraigsList. Carmax beat them all. The salespeople I worked with were fantastic. Genuinely nice, professional people who seemed to like thier job. I'll be back to buy another car at CarMax. read more

He goes out of his way to make sure you leave satisfied and happy. To make a long list short of how he's helped me, I'll sum up the biggest. I have never had a bad CarMax experience no matter if I have bought a car, sold a car or had an oil change. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. They called me back soon after I emailed them and made sure I was informed about my car during the auto buying process. They make everything clear and easy to understand. I was delighted with the process and very happy about the MaxCare warranty I got. I have only ever purchased one car that I did not buy at Carmax, and I regret it. I am back at CarMax again and promise never to leave them again. I have purchased four used cars from Carmax and never had a moment's trouble from any of them. I loved the shizzy out of my car while I had it. It wasn't a luxury vehicle, but it was speedy, cute, and I felt good driving it (especially with my music loud). I loved it hard, and while I maintained it pretty well, I drove it hard. The bumpers were chewed up, and at 85,000 plus miles, it was starting to show it's slip. My car was starting to look like an old disco dancer who just couldn't take her platforms off and admit it was over. It was with a heavy, but resolute, heart that I took the car to Carmax with an intent to sell. And sell I did. Through my 2 week relationship with Carmax I interacted with several friendly and competent employees. Everyone made it easy on me to do something hard. All of my phone calls and queries were met with helpful people with good attitudes. The last thing I want to hear when I call a business is an attitude on the other end of the line. A special shout out MUST be made to Calvin, Monica, and Maria in the business office for this very reason. I called and called them and each time I asked them the same question, they treated me well. My man Gar walked me through the whole process and helped the time pass with good conversation. He made the situation fun even! Went their yesterday (1-23-21) being my first time purchasing a car but I'm glad I didn't get it mostly with the sale man named Greg in this location! He was very rude! Walked in and never greeted us nor offered to see the car I was gonna buy! He right away sat us down to see if we got approve or not! And when we were approved he still didn't ask me if I wanted to see the car I was gonna purchased! Until I had to ask him to show us the car before pursuing with the purchase! And he was still being rude when my self or my brother ask him question or concern! He made us feel like we didn't know anything! Super rude!!! I'm so glad I didn't purchase it with him. I have been looking to trade up to a new vehicles for some time now so I have taken my current car to Carmax twice in the past six months to get an idea of its trade-in value. Both times I have been greeted at the door in a friendly manner. Even when they learn that all I want is to get a price on the old car (14 years old) for possible sale they still remain very friendly. The only disappointing factor is that the value on my vehicle dropped by 25% in six months. But seriously I can't really blame them for that. Purchased a vehicle there roughly a year ago for a new driver to learn on. Upon delivery of the vehicle I called out attention to the low tire tread depth. The salesman stated it was near border line but ok to sell. He did offer to replace the tires at a discounted rate after the purchase. I reached out a few times and never got a call back to have them replaced. We have put maybe 3,000 miles on in the last year, The steel belt is showing on of the front tires, The vehicle needs a new set of brake pads all the way around. Guess they don't perform a thorough inspection upon delivery as they claim to do. Very disappointed. The front set of brake pads had about an 1/8" of material left on them. First of all, Duran was a great salesman. He gets a star. No pressure, let me take my time looking at and test driving the car. The guy in the business office was very helpful as well. But their service dept is dishonest. I took it to the service center for a problem with the steering column which I purchase the car with. Carmax covered it, but a year later the problem came back. I took it to my OWN mechanic who found the steering column to be falling apart! The air bag springs were also broken, meaninf the air bags would not go off in an accidentally. My mechanic was not sure what they did when they worked on it but the car was now unsafe to drive and is costing me $1,650 to fix the original problem plus their shoddy work/parts. Very happy with experience. Some cars you can get quote on phone as it's a set fee for old ones no matter condition. We had many such value quotes before going CarMax to sell old car, so it went very fast. They gave us $100 more than rest, what we expected worth. At time were trying to get most for our Vet's shelter, Heartland on Milwaukee Ave. We took the check to our shelter and they were very happy to get more than their recommended car place quoted. No matter what worth they only give $50 to the shelter instead of you handling it. Better to do yourself. read more

This was my first experience at a CarMax and it was a great experience. Given the COVID-19 situation, everyone was wearing masks and careful to socially distance. Anthony greeted me when I arrived, confirmed I had an appointment, took my license and then brought out the car I had reserved, a 2019 Mazda CX-5 they had shipped in from Memphis. Anthony gave me directions for my test drive and I was off on a solo test drive. When I came back, Anthony greeted me again and I told him I was ready to purchase the car. He led me inside, distanced me from others and brought out, Jerry, my salesman whom I had been chatting with on the phone and via email. Jerry quickly got my paperwork together, went over the purchase order and broke down every single charge I would be paying. No haggling. No surprises. The total price they quoted online was within $60 of the price on the purchase order due to taxes/fees. Three hours later (my credit union's issues not CarMax's), I was signing my final papers and Anthony was handing me my freshly sanitized keys in a paper towel. Everyday they told me my car would be done the next day and finally my car was done 3 days later but I was still grateful because I have always had an issue with the service department. Over all they have a good selection on cars and I'm please by the extended warranty plan. A few weeks ago I purchased my third car and traded in my second car at the Glencoe Carmax location. Each time it gets easier and goes smoother. My sales rep, Keith, made everything as easy, as comfortable, and as quick (we had our 5 day old with us) as possible. There was zero pressure in the process. We looked at cars on our own with nobody over our shoulder and reported back to him about the one we were interested in. During the 5 day return policy period my mechanic noted a few minor concerns (tires mainly) and after emailing Keith he got me in the service center to get everything taken care of free of charge and with a rental. I even attached the email just to show how easy this was. These words typically never come out of a car salesman's mouth so I wanted to share. As always, will return to this location. read more

I arrived at CarMax and was done within an hour or so with a check in hand for exactly what the on line appraisal offered. Extremely organized and professional employees impressed me, they made it easy as I have some issues with standing for a long time. Brought my car in for an appraisal and was offered an anount that was less than half of the kelley blue book value. I told the guy that i would want to buy it for that price too lol. It was literally an insult. Also, if you do sell them your vehicle they do not give you cash or a check it is bank note type thing that has to be deposited into a checking account and takes a while to clear. I sold my car a week later on craigslist for the blue book value paid in cash money. read more

Came in for an appraisal to sell my car. Due to precautionary measures, they didn't test drive my car. When I received the appraisal I was shocked how innacurate the information was. For instance, I have a Lexus with leather seats and they satiated leather seats. They put my tires in good condition when I got new tires on them. They said my carpet is in good condition when it's in perfect condition as we have had weather tech mats in the car since the time of our purchase from the dealership. They claimed that we don't have a trim package on the car, when we have a premium package. They put white as the color, mind you our white was an upgrade as it's pearlized. They had no mention of the upgraded package that included captain chairs. Dealerships are offering me 1500-2200 more on a trade! I felt like I was being taken for a ride and tested to see if I would fall for their pricing. The guy said my car exterior is in perfect condition as well as interior.....so why say good condition? Be fair carmax. A car like mine without all the accessories are selling for 10k over your appraisal on my car! read more
