I sold my beloved 2003 Honda Civic here a few days ago. I chose Carmax because I was willing to sacrifice a little on price in exchange for a hassle-free experience, and that's exactly what I got. They did the inspection and estimate in about 35 minutes, handed me a sheet of paper, and directed me to the business office. I was happy with the price; it wasn't quite what I had hoped, but it was 71% of the Blue Book retail value for an excellent-condition car (mine has a few nicks and scrapes), and was within my "acceptable" range for agreeing to sell. The second half of the sale was even briefer. After I removed everything from the car, I signed over the title, they removed the plates and bagged them up for me, and completed some other paperwork. That part of the process took only 20 minutes. They cut me a big ol' check (let's head to the boats!) and sent me on my way. Selling the car privately would have been too much of a pain--paperwork, sales tax, more paperwork, cleaning, paperwork, etc. These guys have a large, efficient, corporate operation, and that was exactly what I needed to make this painless. CarMax rocks. Great service, products, test drive policies, financing and purchasing process. I've purchased 6 cars from CarMax over the years and don't regret a single purchase. I've purchased 3 from traditional car dealerships and regret every one of those. As long as Carmax keeps up their standards and business practices, I won't be going anywhere else the next time I'm looking for a car (BTW I don't ever purchase new - always 2 years old - I'd rather someone else lose all that $$$ when they drive that shiny new car off the lot:-)). read more

Researching cars recently trying to find that car with the best mpg. Carmax was not the best choice for this search, however I did find some good deals worth mention. I found a Cadillac CTS 2006 with low mileage for under $20K. That's a steal. I also saw quite a number of Lincoln Navigator's, which is a very big SUV, recent year models with low mileage for $20K as well. Strange isn't it.. the economy is forcing these gas guzzlers to decrease in value. This Carmax has one of the smallest selections, but, due to the area of IL you can find some rare and luxury type cars. read more

They offered me $15,000 for a car that they will sell at $22,000 even after I've bought 5 cars from them. Their MaxCare program is expensive and they won't help submitting a claim. Make sure you price any car you want to buy at at least 3 dealers. Couldn't be more disappointed in CarMax. read more

Took my 5 year old Hyundai in to sell at Carmax in Glencoe. Joel Gordon offered me $4000. Said car had "improper running engine" because he saw smoke from tail pipe. I said that's ridiculous. He said maybe oil is old. (And if that's it, car might be worth $1000-2000 more). Took car directly to Heart mechanic to check engine & oil. He said oil perfectly fine & engine in perfect working order. Date of last oil change even posted on window. Mechanic said that any knowledgeable car dealer would easily see that. Felt like Carmax Guy lied because I told him I needed to sell car pre-move. I took car to Hyundai dealer in Schaumburg & resold car for $5300 next day. read more

Not sure if my review will stick only because I never review anyone. But because I had such an awful experience, I wanted to share it and hope I can save at least one person from buying from this place. So here it goes! I bought a porsche cayenne S for 75k after shipment and taxes (out the door). I am a headache free customer who pays cash and is in and out fast. When my vehicle arrived from texas, i noticed it was missing the back luggage retractable item which snaps into the back hatch. Apparently, the person who traded it in, may have forgotten to include it. I mentioned this to my salesman along with some scratches along the driver side panels. The salesman said they will paint it and make it right and when its being painted, they will install the "missing" piece. There were also dents in the seat front and back from the carmax metal key box (front seat) and from a baby seat at the rear. I made an appointment to drop off my car one month after purchase because they had a tight schedule and were very busy. When i showed up, they had no parts ordered and were only going to paint my car and fix the dents in leather. Because i had my car wrapped, the paint issue was moot so carmax saved money from the paint aspect as well as a rental car. The service counter then informed me that the retractable item that was missing is not going to be paid for by carmax and its on my coin to make this right. I then asked to speak to the manager nick. Nick came out and said the pictures on the website dont show it, so i should have been able to realize that it was missing. I said i rely on carmaxs claims of inspections and that each car goes thru some rigorous form of multi point inspections so consumers wont have to take a chance and find out later. When i explained this to nick and expressed my dissatisfaction, his response was epic! He said and i quote, " that part cost 1000 dollars, we are not paying for it". Now nick, with all do respect, i could care less how much it cost...... its missing! Its not my responsibility to buy this item. I then got so aggravated, i told nick I am actually going to leave right now with my car and i will have the dents in the leather fixed myself and i will pay for it! I said i have never had such bad customer service especially after writing a check for a 75,000 car! I also explained that i have been coming to car max for over 6 yrs and every 2 yrs i trade up my car and pay cash - in other words, i am an effortless customer..... in and out and hassle free. I told nick that i will never come back to carmax again and other dealers will get my business. His very professional response - "okay, have a good day". Unreal! Joel, Rebecca and Cindy took great care of us at CarMax. We recently sold and paid off our beloved car to them. Instead of trading our car in to purchase a new one at the dealer, we decided to go another route. First we went in to see Joel and he ordered our car appraisal. We received an appraisal higher than what we thought we would get--KBB book value. I will admit it was in great shape, and the only catch was that the mileage was getting up there, at around 60K. They also were low on our particular Ford Explorer inventory, so I think that helped our situation. We had 7 days to take advantage of the appraisal offer, and then after that, my guess...based on other reviews...is that they lower it by approximately 10-25%. So, we went in during the time period and sold our car. At the sale window, we had a small difference we needed to pay off to even out the difference of the car. We walked in with cash, dropped off the keys, Rebecca paid off the difference to Chase, and we left with a Bill of Sale in hand. Yes, we were a little teary-eyed. I made an appraisal appointment online before going in. It took maybe an hour and a half from the moment I went in to the moment I walked out with a check. Keith Jenkins was my sales consultant and he made the process so transparent and stress-free. The appraisal report lists all the features they consider in coming up with an offer and notes the condition of the key parts (brakes, transmission, etc.). If they make you an offer, it's good for seven days. After getting an offer on my car, I wanted to consult some friends and Keith gave me the privacy to do so. Transferring the title and getting a check also took almost no time. Everyone was super helpful and professional. Honestly, if you are over normal car dealerships' antics, consider selling your car to CarMax. My niece traded in her 2017 Hyundai Elantra and the service was absolutely phenomenal. After the Happy Hyundai Libertyville (horrible experience) offered her $6500 for her car, she went on line to Carmax of Glencoe and received a cash offer of 12k. She made a 2pm appointment for the next day. We got there at 1:45 and someone met us at the door and took her keys to evaluate the car. We sat down and 20 minutes later another person came in with paperwork that confirmed the 12k offer. We went into another room and signed over the title and 15 minutes later, we had the check. Absolutely painless experience. I would recommend their system to anyone getting the runaround from a car dealership or who just wants a seamless experience. Forget selling your car on Craigslist! This was way easier! At first, I did some of my own research value on my minivan and wanted to see if I can sell privately on CL. I pegged the value at about $6,000 and had low ball offers on CL. The other thing that worried me was getting scammed by a professional con artist so I've decided to just visit CarMax in Glencoe to see what they would offer. When I arrived, I was greeting by Steve W. who was a "no pressure" guy and wasn't trying to sell me anything other than facilitate my appraisal. After 20 minutes, CarMax offered me $5,500 on the spot (a little less that I'd hoped for) but explained why the appraisal was lower that was I thought it was worth. They found some other cosmetic blemishes that hurt the value and they would have to repair in order for it to be sold at their location to their specs. I agreed with him and told him I'd think about it. He gave me a firm offer in writing good for 7 days and said to come back anytime before then. I went back 5 days later and sold them my van. I was greeted by the business manager who asked me for the title, keys and sign off on some paperwork. I was then greeted by Hassan who was the nicest guy ever. He explained everything to us again and asked if we still needed to get anything out of the van such as garage door openers, iPass, etc.. Told him the van was clean other than we needed the plates; he gladly took them off. After spending a whole 19 minutes there, I had a check in hand for $5,500 and the deal was done. This was the best experience I've ever had with selling a vehicle. Yes, I could have chanced it with a private seller or whatever but the people I dealt with on CL and FB Market Place were constantly low balling me, excuses, etc... this was WAY better! I'm glad I made the decision to sell my van to CarMax and recommend anyone who wants to sell a car to them, go for it! First we got a quote to purchase my brothers car (he is in the hospital) for $13,000. I was working on convincing my brother and he finally said yes. We went back two days after the first quote expired and, surprise, the amount they will pay is now $12,000. I said, so in two days it went down $1,000? And the guy shrugged his shoulders and said yes. Really feels like a scam. Also, I had to drive over an hour to get there (where the car is and this was the closest Carmax). I was sent all the paperwork, got my brother to sign it, brought it all back and with my POA. Was told my Israel I need to get a loan release from Capital One the auto loan holder. I said to him that this doesn't make sense as there is still some monies on the loan. He said well you have to get that and come back. Left and drove an hour home, called Capital ONe and was told they couldn't give a loan release because there was still money on the loan. Called Carmax back and talked to someone else who said no, they just have to call the day I am coming to get the loan payoff amount. I told him what Israel said, and his response was that he must have been confused. So I drove the hour back another day and talked to Israel when I came in and he basically shrugged it off. Where is the old customer service attitude, not even one "I'm sorry for your inconvenience?" I know it wouldn't change the outcome but does go a long way to shows a customer you can see they are frustrated (I am the Director of Patient Relations at a hospital). I am so disappointed in the change in the Carmax Brand, it was so strong but I would never recommend anyone sell or buy a car now from Carmax. read more

Just got home from a fantastic experience with this carmax location and their salesman Keith T.! I've been car shopping for a while now and got into contact with Keith a few weeks ago. I told him what I wanted, needed and what I could afford. Together we found a car that worked well for me up in Wisconsin & he had it shipped down to his location for me, for free! It did take a bit longer than expected to get the car and typically I'd knock a star off because of that - but due to the excellent customer service I was provided this is forgiven. Keith stayed in contact with me while we waited for the car, answered my kajillion questions without hesitation and found me fantastic financing. Whoever they sold my car to or however it was auctions, the Vin number keeps collecting more and more parking tickets and they are sent to me. First off, I'm still in the looking phase, but when I do buy a car it will most likely be from CarMax, just not at this location. Compared to other Carmax's I've been to, this one is on the smallish side, kind of outdated and without the same selection of cars that I've seen at their other locations, plus the ones I did look at, at least 10 or more weren't as refurbished or clean as other ones I've seen elsewhere. Also, at this particular location the staff aren't as welcoming, or on their toes or even friendly, which kind of surprised us, not one person said hello or even asked if we needed assistance. However, once the initial paperwork was completed I waited almost 2 full hours to sign. What is the point in making an appointment if clearly they were unable to help us at that time? I cried a tiny tear in my beer yesterday at CarMax...it really didn't have anything to do with them...more that I was sad to be ending the three-year Hoorah I had with my beautiful and sleek lil' Scion mobile. Ahhh...the memories. My Scion had a twin sister from Southwest Missouri (really!), but I hopped in my lil' mobile and, together, we jaunted off into the horizon to a new city (Chi-town). I remember how perfect she was when I first brought her here...neither scratch, nor dent. Welcome to Chi-fu*kin'-cago tho...YOU now have a parking ticket and a bumper that looks like a golf ball. Wooooaaaahhh...ok there...got a little nostalgic for a sec. Soooo, I decided it's time to downsize. I first took my car to CarMax for an "appraisal" at the end of May. They got me in quickly (barely even sat down in the waiting area), and while the appraisal was being done, I sat in an office cube with a sales guy named Ron from the South Side and shot the shit. The offer was $7,500, of which I was a bit unsure of at first. MY little BABY?!?? Only worth $7,500 to YOU? INCONCEIVABLE! (I also owed about $8,500 on the loan still, so there was what they deem a "negative equity" of about $1K) The moral of this story though is this: I needed to have a little work done to my baby. And, by 'a little' I mean that the passenger side mirror needed to be replaced (frame cracked on it by some sweet hit-n-run), the windshield needed replacing, both bumpers needed mostly replacing (thanks Chicago parking!), and I was missing my little Scion front logo (sounding hoopty yet? haha...but I LOVED that car!). SOOOO, after my appraisal, I called a friend who's a lifetime resident of the city to ask for a suggestion on body work. I ended up in an alleyway WAY West of Logan Square talking to a Mr. Hatzipetros (Ha-tsee-pay-trose). Now, this guy was supposed to be giving me a good deal, and once he started adding up the repairs we quickly surpassed the $1K negative equity difference from the CarMax offer. That said, I would have had to pay about $2K in repairs and then go through the annoyance of listing my car online or in some weeklies (at a cost) and waiting out the sales process. CarMax saved me time and worry. CarMax appraisals are only good for a full 7 days after they are made, so I did have to have it re-appraised (which again didn't take long), and even with a new crack in the back bumper and more mileage...the offer remained the same. It took about 1.5 hours to go through the paperwork processing, pay the negative equity (cash, certified check or money order, or personal check if the amount is less than $250) and be on my way. Be sure to bring: + Extra keys/remotes + Registration + License + Title (or if car is on loan, provide the loan agency's contact info) So, I took a couple-a last pics with my baby, removed the keys from my chain, cleaned out the CDs, yanked down my "This car is protected by the Holy Spirit" air-freshener, and rode off into the sunset...THIS TIME, without my baby. (Psssst! I'm saving $500/month...so smile for me!) ;-) read more

I am thinking of selling my car and had heard Carmax is a hassle free experience so after checking the BB value and having a friend with expertise calculate how to appropriately lower it given the wear and tear, I went to Carmax. They were quick and friendly. (But what car dealers aren't?) I had looked over their website to see what cars like mine were going for and it was about $6000 - 5000. I got a quote for $2000. I was shocked. I'd thought it would be say at least $3500 since their cars in the showroom were rather pricey. I told them of my dismay and was asked what I based my expectation on. I mentioned that it was Blue Book values minus some wear and tear calculated by a banker who works with this stuff. The clerk said you couldn't go by Blue Book since they don't actually sell them, they "just value them." Yeah, and that's why you CAN go by them. They are an independent organization that is famous and revered for VALUING used cars. I asked them if my getting the windshield replaced which had a repaired crack in it on the driver's side would increase the appraisal. The guy said they didn't notice it and it didn't matter. Huh? It's right in front of the driver. Doesn't seem that they're inspecting very carefully. I am not in a rush and can sell it myself and probably get $1500 more for a few hours effort. read more

I was a little apprehensive about selling my car. I grew up on a farm 6 miles outside of town, so I've been driving myself to school since age 14, driving on roads since I was 12 and driving my dad's pickup in the field since I was 9. All in all, that means I've been a driver for 16 years...and not having a car has never been in my equation (minus about 12 months when I first moved here.) So, after calculating car payments, insurance, gas, registration, city stickers, neighborhood permits, oil changes, car washes, maintenance and all other costs that go into having a car, I decided that the costs of having a car were not justified. After months of saying I was going to sell my beloved car, I tried half-heartedly to sell it privately and decided it was way too much trouble. As a last resort, I went to Carmax. Overall, this place is the corporate sanitized version of the used car lot. Which, I can see why it's been so successful. The place is bright, there are no negotiations on price and it's clean and pleasant. After walking in the door and declaring my intention to sell my car, I was told it would be 45 minutes and to have a seat in the lobby or walk around the lot. After about 40 minutes, they came back and handed me a sheet of paper that told me my appraisal, which was actually $2k above the Blue Book Value trade-in for my car. I cleaned out the car, brought my keys and paperwork back two days later. They took care of all the paperwork, paying off the rest of my loan and even handed me a check that day. Now, I love Carmax, dont get me wrong. its THIS carmax that has me quite upset. I have bought several cars from carmax, some trade-in some just off the lot, but always paid in full instead of financing. So i take my lovely car to get some things fix. I have an after market touch screen dvd/cd/radio etc player in my car which was working perfectly fine until carmax got a hold of it. I get my car back nearly 2 weeks later although they said it would take a few days and my whole system is messed up. The screen was jumbled and touching it didnt work, nothing. So i told them and they looked at it and said "okay well we will keep it here to work on it" i get a call the next day saying that they dont know what is wrong but to come get my car. Excuse me? You broke my radio and now your not going to fix it. I yelled and complained and everything. I couldnt get my car that day so i was going to get it the next day, but next morning I get a phone call. "um...miss...someone broke into your car, but nothing looks missing" WTF! So i had to drive back up to Glencoe for the 3rd time in a week to file a police report. They fixed the window, on the house of course, and i picked up my car a few days later....radio still broken. A few weeks later, magically my radio started to work again. I dunno. Awful. Absolutely awful. Brought our car in for their no hassle offer to buy. They had us wait 2 - yes 2 - hours; only to come back and offer us 1,200 for a car that had a BB value of 4000. "And will you be selling us your car today?" "Uh, no, I'd rather donate it to frickin Salvation Army for that rip off and get the tax write off." Fast forward 2 1/2 years later - we have just sold the car for $3000. Yeah, carmax offers to buy your car even if you don't buy theirs, but it's like dealing with Vinny and Vito at a frickin pawn shop. Thank goodness we didn't have to sell the car at that point. Oh, and they weren't even apologetic about the 2 hour wait, or the fact that they kept losing who was supposed to be in charge of evaluating the car. They offered excuses "Bob and Susie are out of town" but no apologies. AND - their cars? WAY overpriced. With the way the economy has been, Carmax is one of the few places that hasn't felt the need to reduce their prices...their websites are good for comparison shopping, but you can get a much better deal from a regular dealer where they have incentives to get the cars off of their lots. read more

I came into this location to purchase a car in December. I ended up not getting one here because the make/model I wanted had too many miles. I could have waited until they found me one w/lower miles but I needed a new car ASAP. But I want to tell everyone how amazing Carmax is. First off, no one here is a sleazy salesman. Everyone is super nice and super helpful and there are no pressure tactics here. They are just honest people who really want to help you out. My sales guy was Mirza. He is awesome. Go see him. He really knows his stuff and is super nice. He did a great job helping me decide what kind of a car I should get. Also, if you want to finance through them, the process is also a breeze. I like CarMax a lot. This was my second CarMax purchase. If you don't like the $$ you see online, then don't bother going into the store. If you do, the quality of the vehicles are superb. I bought a '15 Ram pickup and it looked new. The web site is very useful in finding the exact vehicle you need. They will also bring in vehicles from other location (they did two for me) so you don't have to drive around. The sales person , Mike , was very accommodating. This location doesn't have many vehicles, but they have the resources of all neighboring store to deliver from. To me buying a vehicle is a stressful time, after you place all the games and posturing. There is none of this here. Also, you have 5 days to return your purchase for ANY reason. read more

I purchased a 2010 Honda Civic two weeks ago, and traded in a beat-up Saturn. All is well in my auto world, and I'm happy with my CarMax experience. I had done a fair amount of research online before visiting this location. I knew which 3 cars I wanted to see. It was Saturday morning, and I did not have an appointment, but a salesman met with me within 15 minutes of my arrival. During the time I waited, I was out on the lot looking at the cars I had chosen ahead of time, and looked at a couple others that seemed to meet my requirements. The salesman assigned to me, Alan, was accommodating and helpful. We test drove a Toyota Yaris, which I didn't like at all, and the Honda I eventually purchased. I would have purchased the car that day, but I was planning to purchase it outright - no financing - and the banks close early on Saturday. I couldn't arrange the cashier's check that day. My only complaint with the whole CarMax experience is that they wouldn't hold the car for me -- with money down, of course -- until Tuesday. Fast forward to Tuesday. I called Alan and said, is the Honda still available? It was. I ended up making everything happen Tuesday afternoon with the money. CarMax handled all the paperwork. I showed up with my old car, the title, and a cashier's check. An hour later, I drove home in my new Honda. There are several things that made this experience minimally painful. No hard sell from the salesman, or any member of the sales staff. They told me what they would do, what I needed to do (title, $$, proof of insurance), and they handled all the paperwork. They gave me the registration for the Honda, they arranged for my license plate to be transferred, and they had the Honda cleaned, oiled, and gassed up. And the no negotiation/just pay this price just made my life a whole lot less stressful. I like my new car. I like that the whole sale process took an hour. I like that I could shop online. I like that there was no bullshit. The free coffee could have been of a higher quality, but hey, I'm a coffee snob. It was a good experience. First of all, most of the 4 stars and below ratings for this Carmax are from people trying to sell their cars, this is about purchasing my 2nd Carmax car. The dealership itself is clean, everyone is very smiley and friendly, and the lot was well organized. My first Carmax car came from the Naperville location last year. It was a 2011 Nissan Rogue and I LOVED her. Then two weeks ago, she got hit while parked and the frame got crumpled. Oh, and I'm eight months pregnant just to make things more interesting. State Farm insurance was amazing and gave me a very fair value for it, but because of my credit, financing, Maxcare, GAP insurance, etc. I owed an additional $4,000 over the value on it. THANK GOODNESS I PURCHASED THE GAP INSURANCE. It was an additional $599 BUT if I hadn't bought it at the time when I purchased the Rogue, I would be owing 4k on a dead car! So, it was time to buy a new car. Due to the nature of the situation (impending first child, unexpected total of beloved vehicle, working and going to school full time) I did not have any money saved for a new vehicle, so I would have to put $0 down. Ouch. . I stepped into the Glencoe Carmax on a Tuesday afternoon after work and was immediately greeted by Durand Hodges, a very friendly man who was my new best friend for the coming week. We test drove many a SUV as I had done research and knew I wanted a larger (mid size) Korean Family friendly SUV (Hyundai Santa Fe or Kia Sorento). I knew what years I was interested in, what size engine, and what price range I was happy with. Durand worked exceptionally hard at getting me into the *right* car. They are paid regardless if I buy a Porshe or the family friendly SUV, so his patience, caring and knowledgeably stood out. We spent *a lot* of time together in the coming week, test driving cars, re-test driving cars, transferring cars from other locations, etc. When it came time to run some numbers, Durand was very patient and the manager, Dawn, came to help out as well. My totaled car was still showing up on my credit, so it looked like I was trying to buy two cars on my income. Not cool. I asked my husband to co-sign and he said yes, but the only time we could come back was Saturday evening. I had picked out a car from the lot on that Friday that would work for our growing family and was very nice, but did not feel like me. On Saturday morning, I checked Carmax's website and found the PERFECT car. I put it on hold and Durand was ready for me at 1pm to test drive it. It was perfect and I decided I was going to buy it, but my husband needed to come in to co-sign. Durand waited all day on Saturday after working very hard all week and closed the deal with us at 10pm on Saturday night when my husband and I could come back in around 8pm (they are only open till 9!). Also to Amy, the paperwork processor who stepped into help at the late hour get everything sorted. I had the exact car I wanted in a great situation that the Carmax team helped us with. I also purchased MaxCare AND GAP COVERAGE. If you are buying a car that is more than you can afford if it gets totaled, BUY GAP Insurance. It saved us! I bought my first Carmax vehicle in (approx?) 2000. It was a 98 Toyota Corolla. My parents still have that car and it is running pretty well! I actually used this original car when my current car was in the shop recently and it was reliable in getting me to and from work! I had been entertaining buying a new car for about 6 months. My friend, this last Spring, bought a car from Winston in Glencoe. I went with her (fellow Yelper Sarah-jayne M.) The experience brought back all the memories as to why Carmax is different: no games, no pressure -just good customer service! When I saw the 2013 Toyota Prius that I had been wanting (black exterior with black leatherette interior), it had 13 views! I knew I had to jump on this if I wanted to score this car! I saw the same car in IN a few weeks earlier and it was sold in two days! I called right away and spoke to Carlos Avila. I was so relieved to find out that they could transfer the car to IL (it was in WI) so I could see it and drive it before fully committing to the purchase. The whole process was super easy. My phone call was Saturday and the car was ready on Monday! I "met" my car on Tuesday and it was love at first sight! (ha ha) Seriously, I really love this car and am so happy with the entire process and my purchase.
