I ended up going to a few, including where I originally purchased my vehicle, but they all low-balled me. CarMax offered me the most, and I was pleasantly surprised at just how much they gave me. Not only was I happy with their $ offer, but their customer service was top-notch. What a well-oiled machine! Their purchasing process is very structured, and the staff member who helped me was efficient and kept me informed about what the steps were and how much more time it would take. Had my 2025 Nissan Versa shipped from Beaufort, GA to Illinois for $300 arrived on time. I've bought multiple cars from CarMax and usually the process is seamless. Sales side was solid: Tabitha communicated well (including a title delay), and when I came in, Dean and Christian had me in and out in under an hour. No complaints there. Service/conditioning was a miss. The car was handed over unclean dusty, no basic wipe-down, nothing. When I asked for it to be cleaned, it wasn't taken back for a proper wash/detail. Instead, a tech did a quick, partial wipe-down with a rag and sent me on my way. That felt careless and below dealership standards especially for a vehicle being delivered to a customer. I ended up paying out of pocket to get the car properly detailed elsewhere. Shout out to Detail Doctor!! Aldo! I'd still shop CarMax for the buying process, but this location needs to tighten up its service/conditioning before delivery. It's a basic expectation. read more

Will never buy another vehicle here again. Several problems I have had. First, the roof has large dents in it and several small dings that were undisclosed. Second, had to spend $200 for an alignment it was so bad. Third, I went to change the air filter and there are literally hundreds of pinecones in the engine bay and under the engine cover resting on the hot engine. These could start a huge fire and burn it down. There was a random aftermarket wiring harness that looks for lights just sitting in the engine bay. It was still hooked to the battery. Good thing it didn't mess something up. How do you sell a vehicle and not even check under the hood. You know from this they don't do anything when they get the vehicle but try to sell it asap. Don't go to CarMax at all. What a horrible experience. read more

Carmax treated me poorly and provided terrible customer service as I tried to purchase a premium used car from them. I expected a premium buying experience when dealing with CarMax, but was treated poorly. I was told that I had 24 hours to make a decision when I reserved a premium car on-line. However, they terminated my reservation and allowed someone else to reserve it after 10 hours time. I called Carmax immediately, and was told by the customer service person that my reserve was valid. However, she ultimately told me (after waiting over 20 minutes) that they had allowed someone else to reserve the car. She could not explain why I was cancelled. A supervisor got on the phone (after another 10 minutes for almost 30 minutes on the phone) and kept apologizing for their error, but would not sell me the car. In my opinion, CarMax has provided horrible customer service (requiring me to be on the phone with them for 30 minutes) and cancelling me. I thought cancel culture is gone, but CarMax did it to me! I will not be dealing with CarMax ever again. read more

I have been a loyal customer and advocate for CarMax for over 15 years. I have traded in and purchased nearly a dozen cars and trucks within the Midwest region. I purchased a 2012 Mercedes Benz C350 coupe and transformed it into a part of my family... it's absolutely beautiful. I purchased MaxCare with the intention of maintaining it and keeping it as pristine as possible. Coming to the end of my contract my Mercedes Benz dealership found an issue with the suspension and I'm being told that MaxCare will only pay for a portion of my repair. On top of that CarMax wants to use aftermarket parts that I wouldn't put in my lawnmower. IF YOU WILL NOT FIX A HIGH END VEHICLE PROPERLY THEN DO NOT SELL THEM. I bought a car from the Carmax in Colorado Springs earlier this year, and much to my disappointment, I discovered a stain under the floor mats. My wife and I recently moved to Illinois though, and John and Moe at the Glencoe location were able to help me get the floor fixed by a vendor all within warranty. I was very pleased with the results. A few weeks later, I took the car in for its first oil change and unfortunately found out that the engine was leaking. John and Moe were able to help me get the car sent to the manufacturer since the repair was covered under their warranty, and now my car is all fixed up. I am extremely grateful for the quality service and willfulness to help from both John and Moe. They were able to make not just one but two inconveniences as smooth as possible. The sales manager is very rude! My parents wanted to sell my car and purchase another at this location. I live out of state, so we communicated to CarMax when we were going to pick up the car and completed the pre-authorization forms. Only when I was 200 miles into my drive on the day of the sale did I learn that the manager gave the car to someone else. No warning was given. The manager was very rude to my parents and never apologized for the situation. We took our business to the Schaumburg location and we had a great experience there! read more

This was not my first CarMax experience, but there is a reason I keep returning. CarMax is a great way to sell a car. They are trustworthy and easy to work with. This CarMax location is no exception. They inspect your car, give you a price, and you have seven days (if I remember correctly) to sell at the price they give you. If you decide to leave and come back, the process to sell it takes 1-2 hours (all dependent on the business day). I'd recommend selling or buying on a week day (even evening) because the weekends are pretty busy. Overall, it was a great and friendly experience. "New to me" cars at Carmax. Why would anyone buy a brand new car nowadays? There are just too many great cars out there for a fraction of the price. When looking for a "new to me" car, I convinced hubby to check out Carmax. He was horrified I wanted to take him there -- thinking he was too high brow for a used car lot. What about all of the dealerships, he asked. What I knew was the dealerships always post above blue book and then you have to haggle if you're lucky. Carmax is almost always listed BELOW blue book pricing. How does Carmax make their money? Really it's through the financing. They do have good financing deals but that's also their bread and butter. Also, they sell extended warranties. Which is a smart bargain, considering your car is probably going to need some love beyond the original warranty. Okay. Back to the story. We looked online before going just to see what they had on the lot. This lot was smaller and the selection wasn't the biggest. But if you find a car from another Carmax, you can have it sent to the closest one to you. Be sure to look online first. When we went, they were only letting people test drive two cars. I found that odd --- but then there are probably people out there who aren't serious buyers and test drive ten different cars while people like me are waiting. How rude to make me wait! My husband picked one car to try out. He liked it but after driving it wasn't bowled over. I suggested we try a different car. And wouldn't you know, Cupid's arrow struck! And it was $2,000 below blue book. Yes! We didn't do financing with Carmax. So within a half hour the car was ours! They said to drive it around and note anything we felt needed tweaking. They fix anything within a certain amount of days as part of the purchase. Turns out the hose for the window washer fluid was a little loose. They fixed it quickly and for free. No biggie. The car has been wonderful without any problems. It was such an easy and hassle free experience I would do it again in a heartbeat. read more

My experience with this CarMax has been pleasantly satisfactory. Selling a used car was a simple and straight-forward process. Best of all, they offered five thousand dollars for an eight-year-old Ford Focus, exceeding the KBB value, vastly exceeding what we would ever have dreamed getting back for it, especially given its suboptimal condition. Try getting a comparable amount for a used American sedan built in 2015-2016 elsewhere. I bet you can't. If you're looking to offload a vehicle, there is no other place I would recommend. Certainly no complaints about this place! Well, if I had to nitpick, the waiting area could have been nicer as they were out of the complimentary coffee on a Friday afternoon (not even decaf? BLEH, but nobody drinks decaf!) nor reading material (to be fair, everyone turns to their phone for entertainment nowadays)... But none of that was essential to the business. We were happy to work with fair and generous dealers. We did try to negotiate for a higher price just to see if we can, but CarMax does not haggle. No matter, with such a fair deal there is no need. Refreshing after having dealt with so many businesses that ripped me off in the past, I almost felt like we were ripping them off. (They agreed that the car was in less-than-optimal condition but were impressed by the unusually low mileage for its age. I knew that my minimal driving over the four years of keeping that car would pay off, not just by saving on gas, or refills and eventual replacement of tires.) Only thing complicating or delaying the process was the fact that one of the co-owners lives out-of-state, so we had to mail paperwork for him to sign/notarize and mail back. As our family had nowhere to keep the car they so graciously offered to hold onto it onsite in the week or so necessary to complete the transaction. I don't know if this is standard for the company or unique to this location. In the former case, kudos to the company, in the latter case, special kudos to this location for such exceptional service. They cheat you a lot .. i bought 2015 gl450 for 37k and after 4 months i went there to return it and buy a different car .. they appreaised the price for $29k , i lost 8k in 5 months for putting 4k miles on it !! Anyway, i returned the vehicle and bought a different one .. so they put same 2015 gl450 which i used to have on market for sale for 35k !!!! I would suggest not buy from here ! Today had to be the worst car buying experience of my life Rebecca and her supervisor had me locked in on a 2021Honda Pilot paperwork and all of the superlatives were finalized. All I needed was my previous check stub and trade in the 2020 Accord. The trade in is 19k, the truck is 35k, I was approved all was smooth. I left and returned and was presented with Rod, which I didn't want him nor Anthony. OK, I am a black man who doesn't look the part of where I am at in life financially and just presentation period. Rod, sits me down and folds his damn hands and smirks and says. " Now how will you be giving me this 19k"? while leaning forward with the most condescending look like Im a vagrant. Uncle Tom Rod, took my buying power to 0, I walk in sold. I snapped.. They want 19k cash, the trade in for 19k and to have me for 72 payments of 630 a month. Carmax, Uncle Tom Rod and Aggressive Anthony, you will not be getting 83k from me for a 2021 Honda Pilot with 36k in mileage. The discrimination of Spirit and body came from Rod, who is also Black, these two single handedly destroyed my car buying experience. and it also woke me up to just probably keep my 2020 Accord Sport. I purchased a car from Carmax a few weeks back. When I took it to my mechanic it was discovered that there was damage to the body underneath the vehicle. The runaround that I have gotten between managers and corporate headquarters has been unbelievable. I have been bullied and intimidated, and was accused of doing the damage myself, when it was quite obvious that it was old damage. Even after two bodyshop estimates and at least a half dozen photos proved the damage to be old, they still refuse to take any responsibility. I would advise anyone looking for cars, to look elsewhere. I would not trust them to sell me a vehicle or to service one. The one star in this review was for the salesman, Carlos, at the Glencoe location. He was honest and helpful and really deserves to be someplace more in line with his values, and respect for customers. read more

So we wanted to sell our ancient 2004 Honda Hybrid. Went to a dealer waaaay on the SW side and they took one look and said $500. Went thru the CarMax online appraisal process and aday later: DING! $1000! We took ole Bessie up to Glencoe and the guy thought we were showing him a KBB appraisal, and we would have to go thru the inspection process. After we got that straightened out, we skipped the whole inspection thing and went straight to the business office. In about 45 minutes, we signed the paperwork, received old Bessie's license plates (and commemorative 2016 Cubs license plate frame), and there was a nice little check for 1000 samolians, courtesy of CarMax. THANKS CarMax for providing Bessie a good home where she can be re-owned, or her vital parts donated to other autos to allow them the chance to live a second life. read more

They found a wiring issue and it needed to be fixed. I was very close to reaching the mileage where I wouldn't be covered under the manufacturer's warranty. Normally they need you to go to the dealership to get it fixed, but he said that I probably wouldn't be able to get an appointment before the warranty mileage hit. So he got manager approval to get it fixed at CarMax and saved me a lot of time and money! And great personality as well, super easy to work with! read more

This was a terrible experience from the moment I stepped into the store, to the moment I left. I arrived at approximately 1:45 last Tuesday afternoon and was told that it would be a 15-20 minute wait to get my vehicle appraised. This was fine. While waiting, I received a phone call from a client and stepped into the vestibule between internal and external doors to take the call. While I was on my call the appraiser, Rick G, became available. I said I would hang up and be right in. When I went inside 45-60 seconds later Rick was nowhere to be found. I asked the gentleman I spoke with originally where he was and he shrugged and said he would be back in a moment. About 10 minutes later, Rick returned. I introduced myself and said "sorry, had to finish with a client." Rick responded "well I am a busy guy so I need you to be ready when I am." Shocked by his rude response, I told Rick that I guarantee I am busier than him and lead him to my vehicle. There were no niceties, etc. Upon returning after about 15-20 minutes, he sat down at his computer and entered the specs of the vehicle. Rick then proceeded into another cubicle where he began conversing with other carmax employees and looking out the window, occasionally picking his teeth or checking his phone. Very busy! When Rick came back after ten minutes of "being busy", I asked what the ETA was for the appraisal. He then said it would be approximately 30-45 minutes before the appraisal was complete. I told him I could not wait that long and to please email the appraisal to me as I was in the process of purchasing a vehicle down the street. He shrugged. I asked again if he could email it and he said "sure" and walked away. After 90 minutes with no appraisal I called and asked Rick if there a status update. He said he would "send it right over" and hung up. Apparently Rick is too busy for common courtesy or manners. They offered me $15,000 for a car that they will sell at $22,000 even after I've bought 5 cars from them. Their MaxCare program is expensive and they won't help submitting a claim. Make sure you price any car you want to buy at at least 3 dealers. Couldn't be more disappointed in CarMax. read more
