SCW and I stopped into Carlton Bakery kind of by mistake in between wine tastings for some lunch. We intended to visit a different sandwich shop however they had no vegetarian options. So we saw Carlton Bakery and they delivered on the veggie options. We both ordered local mushroom sandwiches without meat and a couple of croissants all to go. The sandwiches came with small salads with radish and soy beans (very tasty). I probably could have bought half the items in the store as everything looked delicious. The sandwiches were tasty, good bread which was lightly toasted. The croissants were very good as well, pretty close to those in France. It took about 5-10 minutes for our order to be ready. When I reached out day and half later after not hearing back they said they had refunded my money. They did give me my money back when I asked but I didn't sense they were overly concerned. Came here every morning we were in town for pastries and every single one was delicious. The croissants are buttery and flavorful, and the scones have interesting flavors and the perfect texture. Cannot recommend coming here highly enough to start your day with pastries and coffee. On our last day we decided to have a sit-down breakfast. Their Apple compote French toast on brioche was delicious. The fruit tasted great on top. The avocado toast was immensely disappointing. We were fairly confident that the avocado was not fresh and had come from a pre-puréed container. Staff members were always friendly. Even when full it wasn't too loud. Came here for brunch and loved it. Got an assortment of baked goods - the pecan sticky (yum), sea biscuit (YUM), and a lemon poppyseed bun (AMAZING). I had a ham croissant sandwich with a salad that was tasty, and my wife had a brie/prosciutto croissant smorgasbord that she loved. Also got a vanilla latte (my only complaint was they put it in to-go cups despite knowing I was dining in). Surprise, a bakery worthy of Portland although too small for New York and too native for Paris just a few miles from my country home! Bliss is this new and improved generation of Carlton Bakery. The croque madames are the pièce de résistance here (served for both breakfast and lunch), and the pastry selection is superb (admittedly, we have not made it far beyond the almond croissants and pain au chocolat which are excellent). The shortbread cookies are just right--not too much sugar. The coffee is Stumptown, although I wish they'd serve something closer to home like BJ's/Roots coffee or Longbottom. They DO sell eggs from Santos Farm as well as other local products. I want to buy one of everything, but I wish they'd put prices on their items so I wouldn't have to ask. Love the outdoor seating (spacious, garden view) although I guess one has to ask for the heaters to be turned on. Indoor seating is limited but attractive (beautiful wooden tables and chairs). We used to make sure we would drive out here when we would come to visit family throughout the years. So glad they have been able to expand their little bakery shop to a bigger location across the street from the old location. It was such a beautiful day outside we grabbed our treats and walked across the street to sit in the park and enjoy them in the sunshine. They now offer a larger variety of local favorite jams, jellies, marmalades and olive oils. They have coffee and tea drinks as well. They do have an outside eating area out back. read more

This coffee shopped oozed charm. When you walk in there is a display case filled with delicious pastries, then to the right there is a cozy fireplace, and in back a charming patio. Now on to the food, we ordered a delicious marionberry croissant, and had the veggie quiche. The quiche was the shining star. It was light and fluffy and filled with fresh veggies. My only gripe is that, we were dining there, and the food was served on real plates, but when the coffee came, it was served in a to-go cup. I asked if I could have a ceramic cup, and was told that wasn't an option. Environment aside, I never feel like coffee taste as good when drinking from a plastic lid. Also picked some plain and flavored croissants, sticky buns, and the most interesting bacon and whole grain mustard pastry - not pictured, wolfed it down too quickly. Only thing I would pass on would be the short bread cookies. Left me a bit underwhelmed, which was surprising. The next time I was wine tasting in the area, we arrived earlier in the day just so we could visit the bakery and buy a stash of shortbread cookies! We discovered chai shortbread which were just as awesome. And the almond sticky bun was insane!!! While there we tried the breakfast sandwiches. Our breakfast sandwiches took over 30 minutes to receive and at that point we needed them to go. When we politely asked the staff to please box it up they didn't reply, sneered at us and turned away. What a delightful little find! We drove by on the way to an appointment and immediately said on our way back we wanted to stop by. Small town bakeries are such rare finds anymore. We got some quiche, lemon blueberry scones, lemon lavender shortbread cookies and a jalapeño cheddar roll. Everything was tasty and fresh.
