This is a review of their donuts All of their food is very beautiful and based on the price, you'd think a celebrity was making it for you. My daughter and I each got a donut. I got the cherry filled one and she got one with sprinkles. The cherry donut was way too sweet, and was nothing special. I don't know what the glaze on top tasted like because it all broke off with every bite and fell on the table or the ground. With every bite I took, more broke off and none went in my mouth. The same was true for the one my daughter had with sprinkles. She said the donut tasted oily. They are fairly expensive too at $2.50 and $3.50, if I remember correctly. If you're at MOA looking for a donut, I recommend Tim Horton's, you'll stand in line for a while, but you'll get a way better donut. Outside the mall, go get a donut at Bogart's, Glam Dolls or Mojo Monkey if you want to get a great donut for the same price as this place. read more

A little pricey but that's to be expected in the MOA (and a bakery by on a TV personality) I always get their dark chocolate mousse cake. It's rich, decadent, and always hits the spot. Most of the time the actual experience doesn't live up the hype of what you see on TV...Carlos is the exception to the rule. I honestly didn't know there was a Carlo's bake shop inside of mall of America. The cakes and other sweets looked amazing. When I finally got one, it didn't taste as good as it looked. The cupcake I got was a little dry, and the icing was incredibly sweet. It took a while to go through the line when there was only one person in front of me. OK here goes! I was really excited about this place. Couldn't wait to try what I thought was going to be the best baked goods ever. Well it was a total disappointment. Bought a variety of things. And here is their score!!! Lobster tail "the classic"= good not great. Apple turnover= tasteless, filling seemed to be cheap and canned. Custard Bismarck=tasteless, dry, chocolate on top not very good Jelly Bismarck = just like the custard one, yuck Chocolate eclair = poor quality, chocolate on top horrible. Chocolate browns= here is where the skill was, frosting, lovely, brownie great. Now why can't you do this with the rest. Will never go back. Waste of money. If your going to charge that much for something it really better be worthy. This was not. Hey Carlos. This is not a back water town, don't know nothing town. Got the red velvet cake, cheesecake, and cannoli. It's all a little expensive! The red velvet cake is *one* of the worst I've ever had. Dry cake that's clearly been sugar-watered into being moist. Cheap cream cheese filling. And a veryyy ugly red color. The cheesecake is fine. Not memorable. It is pretty though. The cannoli is also fine. The cream is good but the shell is too much. First experience every eating at a Carlos bakery and it didn't disappoint! We've been watching Buddy for years since the beginning! Was such a fun experience to come get some treats! I got the carrot cake slice with cream cheese frosting and it was delicious! It was very moist and didn't have an overwhelming amount of frosting. There really is nothing more to say about this place than what has already been said. I waited for 10 hours today for the grand opening and every second was worth it! The cannolis were the best I've ever had and my first lobster tail absolutely blew me away. The strawberry shortcake was soooo fresh, light and moist I could have died. I've loved watching the show, and was so excited to see it come here to Minnesota. The cannoli is pretty good, crispy, and sweet. Lots of desserts and baked goods. I think its cool to have a location in MN, but it just isn't the same without all the original family members actually being present. There isn't much hype after your first visit. The line was so short, actually no one was really in line on a busy Saturday afternoon. However, I appreciate that there is a location so go and support it because when I seen all the goodies on tv, I wish they were accessible and now they are. We were excited to try out this bakery, given the name and reputation. We were very disappointed. We were there around 5 pm, so it wasn't like we went there right at closing or anything. There was plenty of cake and pre packaged cookies. The pastry display however was bare. We wanted to try the cannolis, we thought we would bring some home for our kids. There were 5 left in the case 3 regular and 2 chocolate. So we thought ok well get the 5 cannoli box. The guy at the counter was nice but didn't talk. He went and got his co worker who I am guessing was the manager on duty.. he told us we couldn't get the box because the box includes 4 regulars and 1 chocolate and he refused to substitute because the chocolate is more expensive. Then he just walked away without trying to give any kind of customer service. So we told the guy who didn't talk that I guess we would take a box of lobster tails and 2 cannolis to take home for the kids. He brought our stuff to the register where the manager was standing. He told us that if we weren't happy we should "talk to Buddy, his picture is over there" and pointed to the life size cut out of Buddy. This is a shop with so much hype behind it that it is impossible to not be 100% satisfied, but that's not stopping me from letting everyone know that it does meet my expectations of being delicious, and quick, and let's not forget affordable as well. I haven't had the privilege to try all their different menu options, but from what I have tried I can say with certainty that; The slices of cake are Devine! The Cannoli's wonderful! I really wanted to try this place after going to the Carlos Bakery in Vegas and being quite disappointed. I asked the guy what his favorite pastry and cupcake were and got those. He recommended the lobster tail (I got the salted caramel) and the Cookies & cream cupcake. The lobster tail wasn't soggy like I was expecting but hard to chew. It was very hard . The filling was ok, tasted like salted Carmel. The Carmel topping I thought was pretty good. As for the cupcake, it was very oddly shaped. The cake base of it wasn't very tall at all. Carlo's Bake Shop has had quite the buzz about it since it opened up at the Mall of America. Located right next to the Shake Shack in the food court, Carlo's serves a variety of sweet treats to mall-goers. Personal opinion? There's way better local bakeries with better prices, and better desserts. Don't let the line fool you...the line does not mean that this place has anything good to offer. You can't miss Carlo's because there's bound to be a never-ending line leading up to the cash registers. Maybe it's better on weekdays, but I would not suggest waiting on a weekend. The wait in line is brutal (the photo I took was after the crowd had died down a bit, but it was still pretty bad even after that)....you become sweaty, cranky, and you're left wondering where the heavenly smell of desserts baking is at...let me tell you where: there is NO SUCH AROMA here. We got the lobster tail (the original) and the chocolate oreo cupcake. Our wait was 40 minutes, and I'm warning you...the goodies you get are NOT WORTH THE WAIT. The lobster tail is filled with cream, and my friend hated it. Although the cupcake was missing the "moist" factor, it wasn't too bad...the frosting needs some major work though. They also give you HALF of an Oreo...why even bother putting part of an Oreo on top when they're already tiny as it is? Overpriced, the line is horrific, and the baked goods are nothing special. My piece of advice to you would be to skip the wait, support local businesses, and bring your money to a place that makes high-quality desserts. read more

Growing up it east and near Hoboken I was excited to see Carlos opening in the MOA. Now it's been open for a while and people told me they loved it. Those all being local Minnesota peeps! So last night I went in around 830pm and was shocked that they didn't have a lot left! Maybe a good sign? Well after finding out they didn't have an cannolis left I decided to try a cupcake! I got the red velvet cupcakes! Now I know price is inflated due to MOA pricing but $5 for a cupcake and I expect it to be like a Nadias cupcake! I bet into it and it was dry and feel apart right away! I was told the cupcake was fresh that day but it tasted and felt like a 4 day old one! I definitely believe Nadias has much better cupcakes! I will go back to try something else but this place won't make it with this lack of quality! Hi today is July 9 I was that your Carlos bakery in the mall of America you have a rude employee that's trying to close at 7:40 PM when people try to walk in she tells them we're closed and get out and shutting the door on them also one person wanted a cake while she was mopping she threw the mop to the floor and said you're really gonna make me do this and I went to pick up a cake that I had already purchased and when I told her she's said can't you see I'm busy and I got to go to the back . Waited 20 minutes in line just to order from cashier and waited another 20 minutes for someone to get many order. What a fail, we tried to order the strawberry cheesecake, and they ended up running out of it and refunding our money - isn't this what this ordering concept is supposed to prevent? Whoever designed this idea should be fired. Onto the food... We ordered the Lobster Tail - which was pretty good - a flaky Pastery filled with French cream, which hit the spot. Had just the right balance of flavors and sweetness. Tried the Sfogliatella - looks better than it tasted. This as pretty flavorless and stale tasting. It was early in the morning when they opened so you would expect them to have a full selection based upon their menu, however they had less than half displayed which was a bummer. What we have here is good, frequently colorful and fun Mall Food with a few Italian specialties thrown in (like the cannoli and lobster tails). Please let me save you a 30 minute line wait (on a Tuesday afternoon) and $50 (tried a few different things in a few flavors). It's...Just. So. Not. Worth. It. I bought 5 Cannolis (4 original and 1 Chocolate Dipped), 4 Lobster Tails (one of each flavor- Chocolate Hazelnut, Salted Caramel, Cookies 'n Cream, and Traditional), and 6 cupcakes (2 each of Salted Caramel, Vanilla Fudge, and Vanilla Buttercream). The only star I'm giving is for the cannolis. The shell was crisp (in fairness the girl had LITERALLY just brought the tray out from the back) and the filling is delicious. Is it worth $4/cannoli? Sure. Worth the gas, Mall of America parking lot, 30 minute wait on a Tuesday, and $4? No. But it is better than any other cannoli I've tried in Minnesota so far- hence the star. The Lobster Tails are a special present served up by Hades himself in this last quarter of 2017. They look amazing.... and yet, they taste disgusting. The pastry itself was simultaneous chewy-stale (think potato chips after the bag's been left open a few days) and razor sharp on the frilled edges (like a weaponized baklava). It was unwieldy to try and eat, but I gave it a go. The filling was meh. Mostly all I could taste was sugar. I don't know about you, but the worst kind of filling or frosting I encounter is one without a taste to it. If I want a mouthful of sugar I can just go home, turn off the lights in my pantry, and dig into my 5 lb bag like I'm jumping off a Paleo-bandwagon. Since I'm paying $5/tail I'd like it to taste like something (preferably good). I took a few bites and decided to try the Chocolate Hazelnut. Same. With lockjaw dangerously close I sawed through the Traditional with a knife and forked a bite. I gave up after I couldn't chew through the pastry crust and spat it out. Lastly, the cupcakes. Look, I've got a pretty simple rubric for cupcakes to get a star- fluffy cake, reasonably tasty frosting, appropriate size. WTF went wrong with these is absolutely anyone's guess. The cupcake was so dense I thought it'd been previously frozen and thawed. I let them sit (box closed) on the counter for a few hours, figuring the chill just needed to evaporate. After all, why wouldn't I want $50 worth of pastry to yield something more than "Good cannolis"??? Anyway, I came back, still slightly apprehensive and took a bite of the second vanilla fudge cupcake. Pound-cake. I'm fairly certain the cupcakes are made of poundcake. Or lead. Maybe both. The frosting wasn't so much "fudge" as it was "resolidified Nestle Tollhouse Chips". Again, I took bites of the other flavors to make sure it wasn't a one-off. Tragically- the same. I get it, the place has a certain draw from the show (which I watched all of 2 minutes of once). If you're already at the MoA, and the line isn't more than 5 people deep, stop in a grab a cannoli or two. Pretty good. But it's DEFINITELY not worth the trip, the exorbitant prices, or a snaked-line wait. read more
