Updated review: somehow this place has managed to get BETTER. We just had the best experience ever. They got a new menu so I think it warrants an update as well. We brought a friend from out of town to enjoy this place, which they did! We are all currently sober so we got all their mocktails which was a good little variety! We got the Planet Hollywood, Amalfi Spritz, Ka Wai Olada, and a mocktail of our servers choosing (and he knocked it out of the park!). We also got the crispy cauliflower, ham and cheese bites, and mozzerella arancini. Everything came out beautiful and delicious! I'll run through everything. Planet Hollywood: absolutely stunning! Delicious and bright, everyone's favorite Amalfi Spritz: definitely need to be an aperol fan but overall beautiful drink Ka Wai Olada: tropical and refreshing Bartneders Choice: cucumber mint drink was AMAZING and exactly what is needed after a hot day, it should be on the menu!! Crispy cauliflower: everyone's favorite! So flavorful and crispy and the yogurt goes with it so well. Mozzarella arancini: delicious Ham and cheese bites: a little too small, kind of dry, but good flavors. Probably won't get again. Wifey and I were again in the mood for a speakeasy so we chose Captain's Quarters in PB. We arrived right around opening time and checked in outside and were directed to step in. At check-in we were asked if we were there for Grass Skirt or Captain's Quarters. We'll check out Grass Skirt next time. We were then led through a hidden door and walked into a nautically themed decored room and I loved it. We both started with the Gunwale Old Fashioned. I love a standard Old Fashioned but I also love variations on the classic and this one was delicious. The presentation of the cocktail was sharp and my taste buds appreciated the flavors that shined through. My second cocktail I decided to change things up with a Deep Water. Again the presentation was clean and I liked the flavors this drink had to offer. Wife had a classic Old Fashioned it was yummy as well. As far as food, Captain's Quarters doesn't have an extensive menu but what we had I liked. We ordered the BBQ Pork Belly Bao, the Chicken Aleppo Tacos, and the Za'atar Fried Chicken Nuggets. We had a great time here- what a hidden gem for food! We came for the drinks but I think the food was even better. The fried cauliflower with yogurt sauce, pork sandwich, and date cake dessert were all great. I'm not a big espresso martini person but their version of it was awesome and I'd totally order it again! After having food at the Grass Skirt next door we headed over to Captains Quarters. I read reviews and seen pics so was looking forward to it. It was Valentine's Day night so it was loud and crowded which is to be expected I guess for Pac Beach. Still the service was very good and so was my drink. The decor was just as I had imagined and seen in pictures but nothing really pleasantly surprised me there. Long line for the one bathroom and ordered a terrible desert- since we didn't get one at grass skirt: but it was quite bad and not worth m the money. Compared to next door, we enjoyed this spot a lot more. You go through the tile wall at the host stand to get inside. The ambiance was cozy and intimate and we really enjoyed feeling like we were inside a ship. The holiday decor was appropriate for the season and not overdone. Sitting at the bar, the service was prompt and the bartenders had good suggestions for beverages. Our drinks were super delicious and well balanced. Small bites were perfect for 2 people and paired well with our beverages. Also a great one and done spot for the holidays! One of my favorite speakeasies in SD, thanks to the creative themed decor and always lively bartenders. BF and I came on the last night of the Haunted Ship Halloween-themed event, and found CQ decked out in stellar Pirates of the Caribbean style. The bay and portal windows with nautical scenery, as well as the rest of the design from vintage wallpaper to copious tentacles, make you feel transported into a sea faring galleon filled with grog and scalliwags galore. The spooky, sinisterly shifting paintings on the left hand wall evoke the Haunted Mansion, and tonight there were so many wonderful Halloween details from animatronic ghost pirates to skeletal parrots and, of course, an on theme special drink menu. We chose two rum-centric libations--the pandan-spiked Spooky Island and the Thai tea-infused, desserty Basic Witch. Both were nuanced, flavorful and perfect treats after a big meal at Costa Brava. Tony was our bartender for the night, and he was super friendly and made excellent drinks. We ordered the following: * Island Bird (8/10) which was tequila based and had strawberry and lime. Super refreshing and easy to drink, also had tajin on the rim of the glass. * Gunwale Old Fashion (8.5) you'd be surprised how many places mess this drink up, but CQs delivered and it was delicious. * Captain's Cold Brew (9/10) hands down the best drink of the night. I could probably knock back five of these but then I wouldn't be able to sleep or drive. The cream they use sets this apart from your traditional espresso martini. One of the most unique speak easies in San Diego. It looks like you're entering a kitchen but you're actually going into an ocean adventure. They have nautical themed drinks, food and decor. The staff is also so amazing they even told us what to expect in the mini windows on what we would see because they have animations of mermaids, fish and sunrises and sunsets. They were good, but I wasn't a fan of the yogurt dipping sauce they came with. I asked for a side of the garlic aioli that's typically served with the patatas bravas, and that was a much better fit for my taste. A special shoutout to our server, Bubbles. I last minute booked this place to celebrate my brother's college graduation with 6 of our family members, and this was the best choice. Finding it was really funny because I was scared to go through the door that led to a kitchen, but that turned out to be the entrance. When you go in, the ambiance of being on a ship was really cool. The lighting and the windows were so fun to look at. Our server was super nice and even gave my brother and his girlfriend a champagne bong which was awesome. I personally ordered the fried chicken, fried cauliflower, and halloumi fries with the Matcha Peachu cocktail. All of the food is awesome, specifically the cauliflower. My cocktail was refreshing but was definitely on the strong side. But I'm a baby and am pretty sensitive to the taste of alcohol, so I think for someone who enjoys drinking, it's pretty good. My five star review is based on drinks, ambiance, and service. I saw other reviews that said the food was not up to par so I figured we would go with what they do best....cocktails. They did not disappoint. We entered through the travel agency opening that also looks like a kitchen so I'm not too sure of the vibe they were going for there but once inside it is a cozy fun nautical feel. We ordered the Pistachio Prescription which was sweet creamy and delightful. We also had the High Sea Tonic which was refreshing with the pear, lychee combo it was fruity but not super sweet which I prefer. For our 2nd round we had Captain's Cold Brew which was chef's kiss so delish and a bartenders choice made with tequila, another amazing concoction that had our taste buds dancing. Starting off by saying we honestly loved everything. The cocktails were excellent, staff was nice and helpful and our bartender was great with recommendations + happy to help, and the decor is very very cool. We were really hoping this would have been more of a sit down cocktail lounge/speakeasy but the volume was kind of unbelievable. Maybe we went on college night or something but they had a DJ turned up to 11 playing clubby hip hop and Top 40 all night. We kind of thought this was going to be an escape from the loud chaos of PB for a quieter sit down cocktail experience, but it was blasting like there was a dance floor (there is not ). We would have stayed and tried a few more cocktails, but really wanted to talk to each other and hang out which we couldn't over the music - which did not match the vibe. Reservations are highly recommended as the space is small and looks like they fit even less than their neighbor. We wanted to try as much food as possible and actually ordered almost everything off of their menu. For a party of 6, they gave us a kind of cramped space and we had some difficulty trying to share all the food. To start us off, we got some free popcorn (very delicious) and several champagne "bongs" to celebrate our friends' birthdays...all on the house! Roasted Brussels Sprouts: I love it when restaurants can get their brussels sprouts slightly crispy and Captain's Quarters nailed it. They didn't overdo it with a sauce which usually leaves the vegetables soggy. We liked it so much that we ended up ordering a second portion! Fried Pickles: Comes with 5 pieces and a side of dill ranch. The batter kind of reminded me of corn dogs but I think because of how much liquid pickles hold, it become a little soggy too fast. The flavors were good but would've been so much better if the crispness lasted. Double Double: Pretty solid burger. The patties were slightly crispy along the edges, similar to a smashburger. It's got a kick though but not unbearably spicy. Not an easy dish to share but if you don't mind taking bites and passing it around, you'll have enough room to try everything else. Halloumi Fries: We definitely did not read the menu carefully because we were expecting potato fries. But halloumi is a type of cheese and these were more like mozzarella sticks! Comes with 5 pieces and some dipping sauces. The red harissa sauce will have a kick so avoid that if you're sensitive to spicy. Moroccan Spiced Shrimp Skewer: Out of everything, the shrimp skewers were my least favorite. It came with 6 shrimps and I just thought the flavors here didn't compare to everything else we ordered. And although it came with 6 shrimps, we only got 5 pieces of lettuce so that was kind of odd. Papa's Bravas: I was expecting fried wedges of potatoes, tossed in a sweet, thick sauce but we got whole mini potatoes instead. Not sure if these were fried or not but it wasn't that crispy. I don't really prefer this style because while the flavor was good, there was just too much potato in each bite. Za'atar Fried Chicken Nuggets: Comes with lots of thyme and you can taste it in every bite. Very delicious but could've been fried crispier. We also ended up ordering a second round of nuggets. Gordita Crunch: Comes with 3 pieces. These reminded me of mini arepas, just the perfect size for a single bite. Manchego Prosciutto Sandwich: Comes with 4 slices. I thought these would be regular, grilled sandwiches but it was so good! We got a second order too. It's super crispy which meant it kind of cuts up your mouth but I enjoyed the crunch. And it comes with a side of mixed berry jam to eat with. The savoriness of the sandwich mixed with the sweet jam was just delicious. Sonoma Lamb Shawarma Wrap: Not bad but everything else overshadowed the wrap. It's cut into two halves so like the burger, it's not the best dish to share with a group unless you order multiple. While most people probably come here for the speakeasy vibe and drink cocktails, I actually really enjoyed the food here and would come back just to eat! read more
