Captain's Quarters is a speakeasy in the Pacific Beach area of San Diego. It is located in a strip mall with a medium-sized parking lot and additional street parking nearby. It shares an entrance with the Grass Skirt tiki bar. We were a little confused looking for the entrance, and both locations definitely fit the speakeasy theme. You enter through what looks like the back door into a very active kitchen. Check in at the host stand just inside the front door, and they will lead you through one of two hidden entrances depending on which bar you are visiting. Reservations are highly recommended and can be made on OpenTable. The speakeasy is nautical/pirate-ship themed, and is absolutely beautiful inside. The captain of this ship must have had a lot of gold, as it has an elegant feel. The space is lit with dim gold lighting and features lots of dark wood and nautical décor, including artwork, knickknacks, ropes, animated portholes, and giant octopus arms overhead. The rear windows depict a beautiful backlit sunset view of the sea. There was a great mix of music playing in the background. We were here around 9pm on a Saturday night, and the place was full with a great vibe. Their cocktail menu features a lot of niche ingredients and flavor profiles I've never encountered before. All cocktails are $18. The food menu is mostly smaller items and not full entrees. We ate dinner before arriving, but you could easily fill up on food with several menu items. I started out with the Singaporn Star (Navy gin, POG, Benedictine, chinola, clarified). This take on a Singapore Sling is guava and passion fruit flavor forward, but is not sweet. It is well balanced, not boozy, and smooth from the clarification. My girlfriend loves chips and salsa, so naturally she had to try the 5 O'Clock in Rio (cachaca, mango salsa, cilantro distillate, sour cream foam, chip). This is a very unique cocktail and tastes exactly like liquid chips and salsa, and is served with a black salt rim. She loved it so much, she had a second one. I also had the A&W Old Fashioned (fennel butter bourbon, sarsaparilla, fernet, vanilla, absinthe mist, $18). This was my first ever root beer old fashioned, and it was excellent. It starts out with a nice absinthe and sarsaparilla nose. It's still an old fashioned, but the root beer flavor is at the perfect level. I'm not a fan of fernet, so I hesitated when I saw it in the ingredient list. It's very subtle and I'm glad that didn't prevent me from ordering this tasty drink. In between rounds we wanted a little snack, so we ordered the Okonomiyaki fries ($11). This is a very big serving and filled us up. There are a lot of bonito flakes which do give it a little fishy flavor. Bartenders Celia and Tommy were great. They were very friendly, and made sure that everyone had a great time. He apologized, explained that a lot of special things were going on, and took his time with us once he arrived. The poke bowl was exceptional, and the drinks were great. The commitment to their nautical theme is unmatched alongside every detail that makes this such a unique and fun experience. It's a speakeasy that shares a hidden entrance next to the Grass Skirt which is also an amazing experience but a tiki theme. The cocktail menu is as creative as the design. I had a wonderful scotch recipe called "My Way or the Islay."(sorry I didn't take a photo). It's a fun riff of a classic Penicillin. You can see in the video and photos they spared no attention to detail. The massive octopus on the ceiling is one of the first things you notice when you walk in. Updated review: somehow this place has managed to get BETTER. We just had the best experience ever. They got a new menu so I think it warrants an update as well. We brought a friend from out of town to enjoy this place, which they did! We are all currently sober so we got all their mocktails which was a good little variety! We got the Planet Hollywood, Amalfi Spritz, Ka Wai Olada, and a mocktail of our servers choosing (and he knocked it out of the park!). Wifey and I were again in the mood for a speakeasy so we chose Captain's Quarters in PB. We arrived right around opening time and checked in outside and were directed to step in. At check-in we were asked if we were there for Grass Skirt or Captain's Quarters. We'll check out Grass Skirt next time. We were then led through a hidden door and walked into a nautically themed decored room and I loved it. We both started with the Gunwale Old Fashioned. I love a standard Old Fashioned but I also love variations on the classic and this one was delicious. The presentation of the cocktail was sharp and my taste buds appreciated the flavors that shined through. My second cocktail I decided to change things up with a Deep Water. Again the presentation was clean and I liked the flavors this drink had to offer. Wife had a classic Old Fashioned it was yummy as well. As far as food, Captain's Quarters doesn't have an extensive menu but what we had I liked. We ordered the BBQ Pork Belly Bao, the Chicken Aleppo Tacos, and the Za'atar Fried Chicken Nuggets. After having food at the Grass Skirt next door we headed over to Captains Quarters. I read reviews and seen pics so was looking forward to it. It was Valentine's Day night so it was loud and crowded which is to be expected I guess for Pac Beach. Still the service was very good and so was my drink. The decor was just as I had imagined and seen in pictures but nothing really pleasantly surprised me there. Long line for the one bathroom and ordered a terrible desert- since we didn't get one at grass skirt: but it was quite bad and not worth m the money. The ambiance was cozy and intimate and we really enjoyed feeling like we were inside a ship. The holiday decor was appropriate for the season and not overdone. One of my favorite speakeasies in SD, thanks to the creative themed decor and always lively bartenders. BF and I came on the last night of the Haunted Ship Halloween-themed event, and found CQ decked out in stellar Pirates of the Caribbean style. The bay and portal windows with nautical scenery, as well as the rest of the design from vintage wallpaper to copious tentacles, make you feel transported into a sea faring galleon filled with grog and scalliwags galore. The spooky, sinisterly shifting paintings on the left hand wall evoke the Haunted Mansion, and tonight there were so many wonderful Halloween details from animatronic ghost pirates to skeletal parrots and, of course, an on theme special drink menu. We chose two rum-centric libations--the pandan-spiked Spooky Island and the Thai tea-infused, desserty Basic Witch. Both were nuanced, flavorful and perfect treats after a big meal at Costa Brava. Super refreshing and easy to drink, also had tajin on the rim of the glass. * Gunwale Old Fashion (8.5) you'd be surprised how many places mess this drink up, but CQs delivered and it was delicious. * Captain's Cold Brew (9/10) hands down the best drink of the night. I could probably knock back five of these but then I wouldn't be able to sleep or drive. The cream they use sets this apart from your traditional espresso martini. Loved this speakeasy! What drew me to this location was the design and interior of the place. Using the screens to mirror windows of the ship was unique.
