So glad we stumbled upon here by accident. We had no idea this was in downtown Upland. Stopped in for dinner and this restaurant was great. We were seated right away, staff were super friendly and welcoming. Bartender made us strong old fashions and whiskey sour. Large selection on their menu, everything looked divine. I went with the salmon, they have option of blackened or grilled. I chose the blackened salmon with the sauces on the side. My salmon came out nice and juicy. The restaurant itself is very classic. Kind of feels like you're in Seattle rather than in Upland. I would recommend this place if you're in the area. I think 4 stars is on the high side. The server was nice, although towards the end of the meal he was gone for a few minutes, took sometime to get a box and a the bill. The clam chowder was good, which was followed by the mahi mahi, had higher expectations, was just ok, the sauce was not as flavorful as it looked, the fish was thin and a little dry. First impressions are so important in everything, especially restaurants. As we entered, there was a man standing at the hostess desk. We walked in happy to try a new place. The man looked at us. Never smiled. Never acknowledged us. Just looked back at the TV screen. Seconds later, a woman greeted us and took us to our table. We asked about cocktail specials. She recommended the hibiscus mezcal and the pineapple mule. We ordered both. Who brought our drinks? None other than the rude man who ignored us as we entered. Turns out, he's the bartender. He arrived at the table as cold and without a smile as when we entered. I had to fain an over exaggerated smile to evoke any reaction from him. The pineapple mule was tasty IF you like ginger beer. The mezcal had a strange aftertaste. I only drank half. Couldn't finish it as I wasn't enjoying it. When the server inquired, I told her that the drink wasn't what I had hoped. There was an awkward hesitation, but no attempt at correcting anything. Not sure why she asked if she wasn't going to offer another option. As we watched the staff, we noticed most (not all) didn't seem happy to be there. The vibe was not at all welcoming. The gentleman who brought our entrees, however, was kind and friendly--their saving grace. I was disappointed with the tacos. Fish taco was over cooked and rubbery. The rice was just plain steamed white rice. Not very impressive for a Mexican-style restaurant. I usually enjoy black beans, but these were just not good. I cant even say what exactly was wrong with them, but like the cocktail, I didn't eat the rice or the beans and I picked out the edible fish and pieces of shrimp and ate them separately as the tortillas were cold and too chewy to eat. On the bright side, the fish and chip plate was delicious! Substituted slaw for extra fries. The breading on the fish was perfectly light and just enough crunch. The tartar sauce was creamy and seasoned just right. I'd go back but only for the fish and chips. Overall, I was so disappointed in my experience. Ended up paying $80 for dinner that was at best, mediocre. Next time, if I'm craving fish and chips, I may stop by for lunch but never again for dinner and drinks. read more

Tried a place a little out of the way for us, in Upland, but on the way to a comedy show in Ontario. Great little place with a really good menu, tasty dishes and drinks. Would have tried more if we were able to take leftovers, but overall happy with the dishes we tried. Branzino was amazing and nicely prepared with two different sauces. We went during happy hour to try out their happy hour menu on a Monday. I got a $8 house margarita with salt rim that was very well made and packed a nice punch. They were busy on a Tuesday night. Went to visit Captains Grill with my mom and my husband. They had a taco tuesday specials but missed their happy hour. It was a full house on Tuesday which means their food is good right? We were hungry so ordered too much food. By the time tacos came out we were ready to tap out. Surf and Turf was really good along with their salsa they provide. I was slightly disappointed on the captains boil as it was little small for the price tag it had. But tacos were big portion wise. They have decent selection of alcoholic beverages and food options as well. Parking can get little busy over here considering being located at downtown upland. I ordered the fish & chips, which in general, is one of my favorite dishes to eat. The batter on what were more like fish fingers was like a layer of fabric, not crispy, and lacked flavor. I had to ask for tartar sauce. The fries were crispier and good, but not great. One friend from Boston said her clam chowder was great and apparently that is a compliment. We went to celebrate my cousins birthday and it was great, the ambiance is perfect, I loved the art! Service was great also and the food was 10/10. We also got the coconut shrimp which had this amazing spicy marmalade dip. The ONLY reason why I gave it 4/5 stars is because of the drinks from the bar. The beer had a lot of head, and the sangria just tasted like white wine with a splash of lime syrup. No fruit infusion at all. Hopefully, they'll fix that because Sangria goes so well with seafood. First time visit here. The inside is decorated very nice. As stated it's a mix of Mexican and nautical theme. Was greeted very quickly and order was placed. It's getting a 4 star review only for the amount of time it took to get our food delivered. Especially since there were not very many people inside on a Saturday at 2:00pm. My partner and I came on a Thursday evening and it was quite quiet outside in downtown Upland. Parking was easy and we found the restaurant with no problems. Was greeted immediately and seated by our nice server. Loved he decor in the restaurant, the paintings were so pretty and I liked the matching dark furniture. There's a nice bar located at the front, I can just see this restaurant being very lively during the weekend evenings! Service was great although on a slow night we only had one server who went missing for a little bit toward the end of the night. Food was just okay for us! We were asked by the server before we looked at the menu if we wanted a side of chips and salsa and we said yes with suspicion that it wasn't free (it wasn't!) but they gave a good amount of chips and the avocado in the salsa was delicious! Just be warned, it's not complimentary even though it looked like other tables all had it too. We ordered the branzino, which was probably our favorite thing of the night. The vegetables were fresh and plentiful and the branzino had a really great sauce! I liked the red half more than the green but overall good. The mussels were fresh but not very flavorful, bread was toasted well. Surf and turf fries have shrimp and beef with cheese and avocado, I wouldn't get it again, it was really really crispy which might appeal to people but for my personal preference, it was overdone and we weren't able to eat it at another time because it became rock hard. We also ordered half dozen oysters which were clean but quite tasteless as well without dumping sauce on it. Overall an okay experience for us. Really love the decor though! read more

The servers and hosts are always so nice and friendly and there's hardly ever a wait since most people are in and out once they've finished eating. As soon as we walked in, we were warmly greeted and I noticed how cool the vibe inside was. Dark blue booths, dim lighting, music and TVs playing sports set a chill and intimate atmosphere. Since it was happy hour and Taco Tuesday, my husband and I indulged because we wanted to try everything. The tacos were so good and the salsas were DELICIOUS. They have a mild green, a mild molcajete style salsa, and spicy red. My favorite was the molcajete one. The best one was the asada taco and then the shrimp and fish ones were fantastic too. The chicken quesadilla was really good too because the chicken was so flavorful. My husband sucked down the oysters because they were so tasty. Their happy hour menu is legit! This has been on my to-do list to try, and although I wasn't a huge fan of my choice I'll give it one more go around. I ordered the Taco Trio which was $18. No sides are included, but there are a good amount options to choose from. I had the battered fish, grilled fish, and surf & turf. It wasn't horrible , but it wasn't something I feel the need to go back for. Their salsa was great and fresh. Y'know what?! Whoever is working the grill in the kitchen knows what they are doing! Lol. Came on a Sunday Night with hubs and two kids in tow. We ordered half a dozen oysters, black mussels, clam chowder, kids fish n chips, ribeye steak, taco trio - surf & turf, battered fish, grilled shrimp and a strawberry cheesecake. Everything was great. Service was prompt and courteous. Food was delicious. The oysters were fresh, the black mussels were cooked perfectly in a very nice lemon garlic wine broth with perfect garlic bread, the clam chowder was on the thicker side but still good and I loved that they butter toasted/grilles the sourdough bread bowl, our little man said his fish n chips was yummy and crunchy, the ribeye was well seasoned and cooked perfectly to our preference - medium rare, the grilled veggies on the side were a delicious bonus, the ribeye even came with some kind of au jus that i had to ask for more of because it was so savory, hubs said all his tacos were great and their hotter fresh salsa had a nice smokey flavor. And the kids loved the strawberry cheesecake. All in all a wonderful meal. We enjoyed the food, the service and even the ambiance. We're a fishing family so we loved all the ocean themed decor in the restaurant. I especially loved the color because blue is my favorite. The restaurant is also very clean.
