Everything came out hot, well seasoned, and tasted like it was made by people who actually care. The place itself feels like a time capsule from childhood. It reminded me of those slower family meals where nobody was in a rush and sweet tea was basically mandatory. There's something comforting about that kind of atmosphere. What really stood out though was the service. Super down home and genuinely friendly. It honestly felt like I was eating at my aunt's house and my cousin was making sure I didn't leave hungry. Now if you're looking for fresh caught seafood straight off the boat, Jefferson County, TN might not be your spot. 40 exit 417 Captain's Galley - Dandridge TN As we return from Hilton Head to our selected lodging at Fairfield Inn, we observed that road delays on I-26 and 1-40 have pushed us into Knoxville prime dining hours. There is a steakhouse and seafood house steps away from Fairfield Inn, and both provide average fare. We elect to try 40 exit 417 Captain's Gallery (Dandridge TN) for a Captain's Platter; Jesus (Easter Saturday) is our skilled and accomplished server at this 25 year old restaurant. The restaurant is filling for the dinner hour. Very attractive restaurant, and following a long holiday in Hilton Head, the seafood is not Hilton Head quality, but is fine. Restaurant is nicely decorated, and well-staffed. Jesus observes that many diners are local, and I would have guessed this to be true. Note to self: there may be several possible restaurants at exit 417, and perhaps better to exit at 417 rather than take chances in Knoxville. read more

Stopped here on the way to Greenville SC from Cincinnati. Unassuming place with a lot of old school charm. You could tell it was a neighborhood go to spot. There was a mix of patrons, young working class, older and retired. The menu was interesting and a little different, I loved it. The server was the type of person I've come to expect when traveling down south. She was very friendly and made you feel like you've been friends your entire life. Our beverages were brought to the table by a person I can only describe as that neighbor lady that always has good advice. She was awesome. We drove 1/2 hr on 2 friends recommendations of this restaurant. Parking lot was packed so we had a good feeling, otherwise parking lot would be empty (6:60PM Fri), right? We were seated immediately and it was clean. Has carpet which is always a surprise inside a family restaurant. We ordered starter of fried calamari, then garden salads, broiled jumbo shrimp with fried okra, and the mixed broiled platter with fries. They automatically bring a small bowl of hush puppies. Hush Puppies - they are elongated instead of ball shape; thought that was a cool and different way to do it, and was excited to taste. They are too sweet and don't have any of the typical seasonings and onion that make up a hush puppy. They do not provide even a small plate for the hush puppies so I laid out my napkin to use as my plate. I thought if I put tartar sauce on the hush puppy, that will make it better but the tartar sauce also has no seasonings, not even any chopped pickle. So I thought, put some cocktail sauce on the hush puppy to add some 'ting' flavor, however, the cocktail sauce taste like ketchup and you can't even taste any horseradish in it. Calamari came it it was all very small fried rings, no tentacles! It was not salted and had almost no flavor whatsoever. Sad thing is that it was cooked fine and not rubbery but had no flavor at all. Garden Salad was bigger than we expected and it was cold, fresh, and good. Our dinners were lackluster, no flavor at all, and no salt even on the fries. The tilapia tasted fishy and dirty, the scallops were very small and cooked OK but had a bad taste that would even liner in your mouth. The shrimp visibly had seasoning on it, but it also had no taste and no salt. Also our plates had chips. There were mostly senior customers (I'm a senior too) so maybe that is why the kitchen is scared of seasoning and salt, I don't know the reason, but we will not be going back. I'm perplexed as to all the high ratings for this restaurant. Maybe we hit this place on a BAD night. read more

One and done! I ordered two Broiled Combo Platters. One being the Mixed Broiled Platter and the other the Gallery's Ultimate Broiled Platter. I called 30- minutes before pickup time which was set for 2pm. When I arrived at 2pm the bill was ready but not the food? I paid for the food and 5-minutes later a staff member informed me they were out of scallops and therefore not offering the Mixed Broiled Platter today I left my phone number at the time of ordering, why not call me back and inform me of this I then opted for another Gallery's Ultimate Broiled Platter and told a rush would be made on the order. 25-minutes later my food was ready. ALL YOU CAN EAT HUSH PUPPIES!! My FIL brought us here for dinner while we were visiting from MI. We had a 35 minute wait but he ensured us it would be worth every minute and boy was he right. He also warned us about the portion sizes so my husband and I decided to split The Galley's Ultimate Fried Seafood Platter & Boom Boom Shrimp. Everything was wonderful, but the Boom Boom Shrimp was AMAZING!! I always order this back home and let me tell you, I get 8 pieces for $10... TEN DOLLARS! We had to take a picture of our plate just to show them back home the proper way to serve this dish. Our waitress was friendly and constantly checked in on us. After suggesting a meet-up for dinner to our out of town friends and an hour+ drive we arrived at Captains Galley as they opened at 4 PM on Monday October 7th 2024. Our party of 5 was quickly seated and out comes a bowl of their complimentary hush puppies which we've enjoyed much in previous visits over the years. THESE particular pups appeared to be an extruded conglomerate of congealed cornmeal hastily fried into a somewhat semi single blob unedible and absolutely disgusting ! It wasn't just the shape of them either. Taste was way off as well. You had to break a hunk off if you so dared !!! We had NO INTEREST in ANY second round of pups at this point ! Our friendly waiter confessed of NO SHOWS in the kitchen that night and dealing with issues with prepared food as it came out. WE suspect this is an ongoing AND VERY COMMON issue at Captain's Galley as told by the locals. It's VERY EVIDENT if you look around at SADLY RUN DOWN BUILDING, DILAPIDATED BROKEN SIGNAGE, POOR and INCONSISTENT FOOD QUALITY, POORLY trained staff and Micro managers !!! We ordered our dinners despite the minor pup problem and silly optimistic me informed our guests how great it will be as we were some of the very first customers upon opening and EVERYTHING SHOULD BE HOT AND FRESH since they JUST OPENED ! WRONG !!! I'll get back to that later......... As we were enjoying our visit with long lost friends, we informed our waiter about how we hadn't seen our friends in over 50 years and IF it was gonna be a SLOW night we might visit awhile if tables remained available and not needed for other diners. Our kind waiter assured us NO PROBLEM whatsoever and said they were short staffed and he was plenty busy with other customers anyway BUT.... He kindly did his job well at our table and continued to serve us as we told him AGAIN we'd happily leave if it suddenly got busy and tables were needed etc. We assured waiter we were good here, don't worry about us and focus on other customers being staff was minimal that evening apparently. We further thanked him for his kindness and told him we'd tip nicely for his service and again we'd happily be on our way if it got busy ( Which IT NEVER DID ) ! We Later as our dinners arrived my enthusiasm was quickly dampened as ALL OUR DINNERS were served LUKE WARM at best !!! EVERY SINGLE ITEM !!! WTH !!! Not wanting to cause an issue or embarrassing situation with our guests in our happy reunion we soldiered through our meals but my baked tater must have been baked hours before I got to it. My wife's sweet potato was the size of a golf ball AND COLD ! Fish that most of us had was BARELY warm ! And.... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WAS HOT !!! For REAL ! We were asked at register if everything was good and I said just OK but pups terrible in the interest of not getting TOO dramatic in front of our friends after many years of not seeing them ! We kept receipt and grumbled ALL THE WAY HOME Mad as HELL for not saying more about our terrible meals at the register !!! MY FAULT!!! And I'd ALSO ADD that this ISNT OUR FIRST run in with the CAPTAIN'S GALLEY ! After a polite and respectful phone call to Danielle (angry micro manager) we were told we would be comped for our two meals, though not typical policy, with our receipt when we got there for our less than pleasant dining out experience. When we arrived, we were approached by Danielle who BLUNTLY informed us that we will ONLY get ONE MEAL. NOT TWO as previously mentioned ! HER WORDS "ONE MEAL , TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT !" We told her NOT INTERESTED and watch for my HONEST REVIEW. We were respectful, considerate, courteous and quiet when discussing our experience with Danielle at first but she wasn't gonna play nice and WILL NEVER RETURN ! As the back and forth got louder in front of customers we suggested discussing problem in a more private setting but Danielle didn't have ANY desire about rectifying situation ! We saw a few of the disgruntled employees in the background sneering and enjoying our escalating verbal altercation with their manager in front of the dining customers. We were treated as hustlers scamming for free meals by Danielle and we resent it !!! This Micro Managed Restaurant is a SINKING SHIP FOLKS ! We speak from much experience. Let me start by saying our server,and service was great. Now the food. My appetizer was mozzarella cheese sticks, that tasted more like fish sticks. My salad was good, but my sweet potato was over cooked. My salmon tasted sour, I had my wife try it and she had the same experience. So I ordered some chicken instead. The chicken tasted good, except for chicken bones, and tendons that were in it. After that I was done eating l, and just wanted out of there. Not sure why the locals love this place. read more

Good seafood at a pretty good price. Service was good too. It took a little bit for someone to get to our table, but overall not bad. The lobster tails were delicious and the mashed potatoes are good. Didn't have much else besides those, but go yourself and give different dishes a try. Only reason this is just three stars is because the bathroom was so gross. It smelled like people had been peeing on the walls and floors for a week straight with no one cleaning it. The floor was also soaked and no sign saying it had just been mopped, so just assume what you want there about what was on the floor. read more

We ordered appetizer of cheese crab dip with chips the top of it was delicious after an inch there was black burned chunks was nasty tasting we couldn't eat it and for nine dollars an appetizer that was very disheartening we told Justin to take it back to the cook a manager never came out never spoke to us I didn't get to finish my meal because I put that nasty burned dip on my potato and just in the waiter took the credit back then spent the next half hour avoiding us I walked away hungry not being able to finish my meal it was a very sad case of affairs would not recommend the waiter or this restaurant very horrid experience it's my own neck of the woods I am local so if you're reading this take heart in eating there you will have better food at Arbys for half the price. read more

A customer came in after us they placed there order 10 min after us low and behold they got there blooming onion first well I thought ours should be out soon WELL Never got ours ask waitress where's ours she left never came back after she delivered two other people order that came in after us she came by table and said you want another coke I said yes we'll that never got that after 15 min of that we got up and left told her we're leaving she said yours is coming up i said you have delivered 2 people that came in after us we're not waiting any longer. Looking forward to seafood, I was excited to try this place out. Being from south Florida, I know fresh seafood. I didn't expect east Tennessee to be the same, and I was correct. That being said, The okra was excellent. Looking over the menu, I noticed that most of it was fried. Normally, I'd be in heaven, but I was looking for a healthier option this evening. Broiled deep sea scallops jumped out at me. That sounded divine. Unfortunately, I was the victim of a switcheroo. Or, more likely, false advertising. What came out was a dish of bay scallops. The okra was bigger. Buyer beware. I was sadly disappointed. They do not have sea scallops. They are the small bay scallops. I decided to stay away from the fried foods so I ordered the grilled halibut and the blackened flounder it came with a large sweet potato and sweet coleslaw, very good and plenty to eat. The wife ordered fried catfish fried clams and french fries which was a very large plate full of food. Our waitress was so sweet and attentive, she came by 4 or 5 times to check on us to see if we needed anything. I think this is a popular place Because by the time we left the place was very crowded. We decided to have a late lunch and we have been to this restaurant several times. This time I thought I would try the senior menu because it was so late in the day. The hostess sat us down at a table and took our drink orders. We looked over the menu, and I decided to have I thought a smaller meal because it was the senior menu huh I ordered fried clam strips with fried catfish, french fries, and it came with coleslaw and the waitress brought over a basket of hush puppies. When my plate came it was so full overflowing with clams and french fries and catfish I had too even ask for a separate plate. This was a full-size dinner even if it was off the senior menu I was very surprised. I took some of that home because it was just way too much for such a late lunch. Excellent atmosphere for the only exclusive seafood restaurant in the area. The food quality is excellent, and the portions are ample, allowing for a good amount of food for take-home leftovers. Service is always good and the wait staff are friendly. We love the hushpuppies that are brought to your table to munch on while you wait for your meal. The atmosphere is very casual and comfortable.
