This place has great lunch specials and a great normal menu. Staff is friendly and there's lots of seating, booths and tables, and a Pepsi fountain machine. The inside also has a convenience store, restroom and bakery case filled with options. Outside there are gas pumps. I would rate it 5 stars, but prices are a bit in the high side considering that this is a convenience store eatery and portions on fries weren't great for almost $4 and drinks are over $3. My sandwich was about $12 and came with nothing, not sure if everything is al a cart like that or not, but it would be nice to have some combo deals with discounts. Have been seeing multiple posts on Facebook of Captain's Corner. Definitely had it on my list of places to try. However, based on where we live in Kansas this would be a hefty drive. The other day we were in downtown KCMO, so figured we were about halfway there so it was time to make the drive and go to Captain's Corner. Glad we did. What an interesting place. Kind of in the middle of nowhere, but easy to find with the interesting outside displays and a parking lot full of cars. We got there around lunch time. Note: If you do get there during lunch, be prepared for a short wait, but still worth it. When you walk in there will probably be a line of people either waiting to order and waiting on their food. As a rookie we quickly figured out the process. Go up to the register and place your food order. There is a menu on the wall. The place is also a small market for campers and fisher people. There are probably a dozen tables and booths. We were going to eat there so place your order, tell them you are eating there, give them a name and grab a table and wait for your food to come out. Now, on to the food. We had heard some recommendations, so we got a cheeseburger and a tenderloin sandwich. The food was outstanding. The burger was delicious. Not sure what blend of beef they use, however it was delicious. On a good bun with your choice of cheeses. I can't say it is the best cheeseburger in the world, since I have not been to every restaurant, however it was the best cheeseburger I have every had. Looked to be about a 1/3 pound patty. You can get multiple patties, however one was more than adequate. We also got a tenderloin sandwich. Again, one of the best we have ever had. Almost forgot to get pictures, however, did get some although had already taken a bit. Got a side of fries. They were good. Will probably try a different side next time. All the staff there was friendly and helpful. It is a wonderful place. Just wished I live closer due to the drive; however, I will be going back. Make the drive, it is well worth it. I have a lot about this place. I made the drive to try it. It's located in a general store with a few gas pumps. Definitely has a lake vibe. The staff was welcoming and friendly. I wanted to try something unique to the restaurant. There really was nothing unique. The counter person said they were known for their hamburgers. So, I got the cowboy burger with the jalapeños on the side and a cup of water. The water cup was the only dissapointment. The cup was so small. I needed to take three trips during the meal to drink. The hamburger was better than I expected. I knew it would be good when took a little while for it to arrive. Means it is fresh and cooked to order. Next I had a slice of pecan pie. It was great as well. This did not come in a box from a store. Very nice. Take some time to enjoy this out of the way place. read more

I may have initially judged this place negatively. We went back and found several dishes that were superb. One dish that was the special of the week was beef strogonoff that had been made with a nice sauce. Probably some of the best gas station strogonoff I have ever had.....definetly would return if it was available again. Captains Corner was presented as a must try for our small family. It's a quiet town hamburger serving gas station across the street from an old fashion ice cream parlor. The quiet town is just that, I nice retreat. So keep in mind that this is a gas station with tables and the location is always busy, even local police stop in to eat. This is not a fine dining experience. Most of the time you'd be lucky to catch an empty table to sit at. They serve hamburger, hotdogs and fried items such as fried onion rings. The onion rings really were my favorite item. Although we didn't manage to get any ranch for them because the place was too busy to get good service. They serve a version of a brat that is called the Big Foot Hotdog, we tried it and wished that we did not. The exterior was rather tough and difficult to eat because of the size. Overall we won't visit this location again and we like to eat at places that have enough room for customers to sit down and maybe even make an order for seconds if the line isn't 15 mins long. Go across the street though and get yourself some ice cream, that's a fun spot. read more

5/5 for meals I've eaten in a convenience store, and honestly for this type of fare it was crazy tasty. They should call this place, Captain's Corner, Crazy. Tasty. It's a quaint little spot in Smithvile, or rather Paradise, MO. It's reminiscent of a place you'd stop in the summer after a long day of boating, sun sick and starving, it hits the spot, and then some. This isn't a place you'd expect to get the best piece of cake you've eaten lately, like in past several years, but more about that later. Hubs ordered the captain's classic w bacon and cheese and I was contemplating the cheesesteak, but after talking with the gal behind the counter I went for the special because I could order the sandwich any day. The special was hot beef and potatoes, corn and a roll. I don't normally order this type of food, I'm not sure why, but I was pleasantly surprised. The tableware is disposable but don't let that fool you. This was comfort food nirvana on a paper plate. It was melt in your mouth delicious and seasoned to perfection, seriously. Hubs seemed pleased with his burger and I was jazzed about his fries. Crisp, hot, tasty, delicious! The only thing that would have improved them is a small, delicate, plastic bowl of house ranch dressing. You know, the condiment cups? I didn't ask if they had any but I wish I had. Lastly the cake...on a whim I decided to buy a piece of the cake I saw being sliced when I ordered our lunch. I understood the owner made it and there were a limited amount of slices to procure. Pineapple upside down cake/cheese cake. The top layer was moist, can I say that here, delicious Pineapple upside down cake, and the bottom layer was pineapple cheesecake. I hesitated because I don't love cheesecake, it's too heavy and my least favorite dessert. I purchased it anyway and told hubs we could share it later as we had zero room for dessert. Later that evening I opened the container and took a bite, this was pineapple upside down cake, redefined. I propose the name, Pineapple Jack cake, as in captain Jack. The cheesecake was light and fluffy with perfect flavor balance, the cheesecake combined with the regular cake had a great consistency. I'd like to buy a whole cake for Christmas.. If you buy a drink you get to pick your size, they're all the same price, and refills are free. It felt good to mingle with the laid back country folk and no C-bass in sight so I call that a win. Local people, retired people, city people, it's crazy tasty food for all the people. Grab your favorite person, take the backroads up north to Paradise, enjoy the fall scenery and anchor your ride at Captain's Corner, just don't spill the salt. read more

Took a drive out on Saturday afternoon after reading reviews. Place is a combination store and restaurant with small seating area inside but has places outside too. We ended sitting at a shared community table which was great for meeting new people. My fish sandwich was HUGE! Although it was very good, I would not get it again because it is way too much food for me. I could have easily shared this!!! Husband got a double burger with cheese and bacon...huge thick patties. It is definitely not fast food, and we probably waited 15 to 20 minutes for the food to come out but it was hot and fresh and made to order so well worth it! The place is very busy with food orders, people picking things up for the lake, beer, sales... Lots of friendly people and good people watching. They have an ice cream place directly across the street with a cute little antique store. I only wish I was hungry enough for ice cream because what I saw looked delicious. Alas, another Monday morning has arrived. And as I stumble down the stairs to make a pot of coffee and something to eat, so I can at least dress myself and have adult manners for the rest of the day, the voices start speaking to me, for the first time in a long time from the corners of my mind! "What, you're gonna feed us this crap again?" "Eggs, sausage, and toast are not crap they are good food, and you should be happy to get them for breakfast! And what may I ask would you like today? It's a bit late for breakfast but I'm sure we can come up with something for lunch for your finicky appetites." "Savory beef perfectly prepared covered in cheese and bacon with a lid of lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and a fresh bun smothered with mayo, mustard, and ketchup, oh and some fried mushrooms and onion rings would be good for that too." "So, you want a cheeseburger, right? It's Monday morning and nothing is open where am I going to find that for you clowns?" "Do it or we'll make you miserable!" Woe is me, I guess it's time to get cleaned up and step out into the garage of my dreams! hunting for the perfect car for this little escapade I choose one of unknown year and manufacturer I call it the Grinning Wolf. I grab the automatic sandwich finding machine from the closet climb into the front seat, set the primer and the choke turn the ignition switch to on end depress the starter button on the floor of the car, the beast roars to life. Putting this beast into reverse I back out of the garage and turn on the radio. Nothing happens and then I remember it's got tubes it takes a while to warm up. When the radio finally does come on what should my ears hear but an old classic song they call "Cheeseburger in Paradise!" It looks like the Grinning Wolf is headed for Paradise! No need for the sandwich finder today! I jump 152 highway West and then take the 169 highway north exit. Feeling that this wolf wants to stretch its tires service peak I reach over and flick the switch marked HAS (hamster speed assist) and the power of 1000 hamsters on a free spinning wheel come to life and the wolf leaps forward in a mighty bound! Taking 169 highway north, with the wind blowing though the hair I no longer have, all the way to route W, where I hang a right and go over Smithville Lake and as I continue following W around the curve and head back South I make sure I don't blink, because if I do, I will miss Paradise. And no one wants to miss Paradise. Arriving at my destination, I step out of my car and think to myself the parking lot is packed am I going to be able to find a seat? Well, I won't know until I go in, so I walk up to the door open it and enter The Captains Corner! I step up the register and let them know that there is a cheeseburger on my mind! Placing the order, I find an empty booth, park my carcass within it, open a bottle of water and wait in giddy anticipation of a Cheeseburger from Paradise. In just a few moments they brought me out a basket full of delicious food! I had trouble deciding on whether I wanted onion rings or fried mushrooms, so they split them and gave me half of each. those fried mushrooms by the way are nice thick portabellas and boy oh boy were they good! Nothing wrong with the onions rings, they were fresh and tasty. And then there was Paradise in the form of a Cheeseburger! Thick and juicy, layered on a bun that was well designed to take the wetness and the weight of this sandwich, smothered in cheese and bacon then covered with a tomato, pickles, lettuce, and about 1/4 inch thick layer of mustard, ketchup, and mayo! The first bite and every bite after was a perfect blend of flavors and textures. Deliciousness at its best! Folks, this is one very good burger! Well Done Captains Corner! Five mile northeast of Smithville lies a small community named Paradise that is located at the entrance to Sailboat Cove. Inside the Paradise General Store is Captain's Corner and they are known for their Cheeseburgers. The burgers are made fresh when ordered and topped with your choice of cheese and normal accompaniments. The place is family owned and operated and caters to the boating and hunting crowd. The burger was not life changing, but a solid choice if anywhere near Smithville Lake.
