This place was listed as a top breakfast spot in Western Missouri. Stopped in yesterday to start a fun day in town. It's a small little diner but we got lucky as two people were leaving as we walked in - got 2 seats at the counter. It was awesome that they had a breakfast special, two eggs, bacon and two biscuits & gravy. It was so good and the bacon was crispy and very good. We also ordered the lunch special-double cheeseburger & fries. Got pickles and diced onions on the burger. We've been on a tour of top 10 burger places in KS-this burger would be our #1 or #2 if it were KS. It was outstanding. I'd been looking forward to getting some breakfast here after staying over at the Elms the previous night. Parking on the street outside was fairly easy/close. Seating is incredibly limited; like 4-5 booths, a couple tables and 8-10 or so stools at the bar. Unfortunately, walking in right at 11AM on Saturday, I was met with the greeting that "Breakfast is over, the only other place that'll have breakfast is Waffle House on the other side of town" (while the last breakfast order of eggs and bacon were being cooked right in front of me). *My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined* Alas, being the good sport that I am, I rolled the dice on some chicken strips and fries along with a grilled cheese sandwich. The grilled cheese was actually good, but the chicken strips and crinkle cut fries were the standard frozen to fryer items and not really worth eating. On one hand, it's curious why they can't just do breakfast all day (or until they run out). But on the other, there was a significant number of people ready for burgers (which did look good) ready to order once breakfast switched to lunch. Maybe just chalk this up to a weird timing deal, but if you miss out on breakfast, you're kinda hosed unless you're down for a burger. If I'm ever back, I'll try to make it for breakfast since that's really what looks great here. read more

Super cute and tiny diner tucked into downtown Excelsior Springs! When I say tiny, I mean tiny. There's counter seating and a couple of tables/booths, and there isn't even room to wait inside. If you are waiting for space, you'll have to stand outside! Don't plan on bringing more than 2 people if you want to guarantee sitting together. Service was quick, considering there's only one person working the grill. The servers turn over seats quickly! I'm something of a breakfast sandwich expert, and the garbage sandwich is definitely something you should order. Very disappointed today. I didn't realize they aren't automatically toasting the buns anymore. Appears they also changed buns. Way too much bun for that type burger. Chili hasn't been the same for quite some time. I won't be back for lunch anytime soon. Better stick to eating breakfast there if eating there at all. read more

TR who works at Halls of Water recommended Ray's when I asked where he would go for lunch. He said their burgers are really good and he was spot on ! This is a short walk from the Halls of Water museum. The diner was full with one table open. Everyone was having a good 'ole time. Upon walking in, you get the impression everyone knows each other. Debbie was right over to take our order, we had just missed breakfast so we looked to the right side of the menu. The chicken strips basket caught my eye. There were two hand sized strips and plenty of fries in a basket. My husband had the cheeseburger and while small, it was Perfect and tasty ! Ray's Diner, it appears to be a nothing special little diner in the heart of the Midwest. You would be mistaken for skipping it though, this is the best food you'll find for miles, the best service in any restaurant I have ever been too and more bang for your buck than any place around. The environment is decked out in the towns rich history and belongings of its late original owner. 10/10 Do Not Skip! read more

Stopped by here while exploring downtown and had breakfast. It's a small locally owned diner. Seating is limited. Locals frequent the place, and it seems like everyone knew everyone. Servers were just as friendly to us, "tourist", as they were the locals. Food was good, cooked right in front of you. Generous portions, clean and served quickly. I got the Cheeseburger and fries and my date had the grilled cheese with chili cheese fries. The service was great. It's a very small diner. We scored a seat in a booth by luck. The burger is small and they advertise it that way. It was perfect for me. They overload you with fries, and they were great. Pictured, I had not even touched the fries. My date said the grilled cheese was as expected and the chili cheese fries were not the best. She said next time she wants to go for breakfast to get the garbage sandwich. Get there early if you want breakfast because they stop serving prior to when they start shutting down for the day. We were there at 1300 and there was no breakfast. Closing is at 1400. We enjoyed it and good folks run the place. Next time we will show earlier. read more

We were visiting the area for my husband's Birthday and staying at The elms. This restaurant was within walking distance and we decided to try it for breakfast. It's a very small restaurant with cute character. Looks like it was busy with lots of local people that seemed to have a great relationship with the staff. It was a little dusty and the menu was sticky. It could use a little cleaning. The staff was friendly and even though it was busy we didn't have a long wait. I had two eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. My husband had two eggs with cheese, Ham, hash browns and toast. The cost 22.00. Our food was ok. Hash browns were bland and the cost was pricey for breakfast. It wasn't bad but it wasn't delicious. Bacon could have been cooked longer. read more
