We knew we were going to love this place when a neighbor came out to distract his pit bull as we walked by. And when we stepped in to head the bartender explaining to a couple of other customers how terrified she is of clowns, we somehow knew we were going to have more fun here than we'd had all day. It turned out that bartender's name was Becky, and she's 1/2 of the couple who owns the bar. The other half is her husband, Waylan, who showed up later at the end of our visit. "Having a name like Waylan is like having the biggest cock," she said. Or maybe it was B who said that, I don't remember and my notes aren't very clear. :) There is quite a collection of bras on the bar, a recent development. "A while back one of the customers just up and took her bra off, and said she wanted to hang it up. So we did. Then other ladies started doing it," Becky explained. "Now boxer shorts have even started to join the collection." We ended up spending out entire visit chatting with the bartender about their history with the bar. We really enjoyed our time here. In addition to the great personalities, this is a fun-looking bar all around and I'de love to visit again when it's busier. In fact, here's how good a time we had -- when we first arrived we noticed the Silver Strike machine and put a few dollars in it to play. But we never got around to actually doing so! :)

My father was usually annoyed at having to leave his shuffleboard game, loaded jukebox or conversation with the equally loaded good ole boys. The bartender would often threaten to throw me down the heating vent behind the bar; which I believed to be a portal to the Underworld; unless I went and told my mother to come back in a while. Just like my mother leaving for a while and returning, so did I. I left Liberty and the Corner Bar before I could legally drink and then in the early 2000's I ended up back in Liberty for a decade. I remember going back the first time as an adult and being a little trepidatious about entering since I had heard plenty of stories about it attracting the "wrong crowd" - mostly from judgmental Country Club types. I now understand that I am "the wrong crowd" because some of the most fun I've ever had at a bar has been here. I've reconnected with long lost friends, made lots of new friends, "owned" the shuffleboard table, played a lot of great and obscure stuff on the juke box and have had some of the best conversations ever- all in this perfectly classic Dive Bar. It's been a decade since I have lived in the neighborhood and now I only am able to get back for a fun night about once a year. My visit last weekend offered a lot of newer and younger clientele, but still a few older regulars but most importantly the same welcoming spirit of comradery. We found the bar on our own as we headed on south out of town. "Did this place used to be further north?" we asked the bartender. "Nope, it's been here as long as I can remember," she said. "Actually it used to be down on the square," chimed a customer sitting at a nearby table. "About 3 years ago I think it was." So if you try to get here via GPS, make sure its database is up-to-date. :) Anyway, I'm usually not a fan of bars located in manufactured buildings because, as a general rule, they rarely have any character. But this bar has a few things that make up for the bland building it's in. For instance, since it also serves as a diner, it opens at 6:00am so you can get your drink on early. :) Also, their beer coasters cut from carpet samples are pretty clever and are a good example of the little details I look for in local mom-and-pop dives.

The bar is eclectically decorated -- several types of stringed musical instruments, a wooden Indian, bee hives, cattle horns, etc. There's a jukebox, a dart board, and a pool table. The clientele is skews a little older, but a few younger people pop in from time to time. Draft beer is served in mugs -- some with high school logos on them. We were greeted by an extremely intoxicated mechanic who couldn't even say his own name when introducing himself and found setting a book of matches on the bar to be a rather challenging task. River Bend -- a village incporporated several years ago by residents who wanted to stay free of the encroaching restrictions of (ironically) Liberty and Independence -- has no smoking ordinance. Therefore smoking is allowed in this bar.

We saw the fireball dispenser so immediately decided to just do a shot and leave. Well that didn't go well. Two other patrons heard and said they'd also do shots. Bartender poured our cold shots and let them sit. Poured the other patrons shots and took them to them. Took my $20 and was back 10 mins later because she didn't know how to use the cash register. How was she planning on taking payments the rest of the day? Meanwhile our cold, tiny expensive shots were sitting the whole time. Did I mention she gave the other people their shots? We pulled into the lot, and to be honest, we looked at each other and said, "ehh, we'll see." It looks like a 1970's roadside motel, which, no lie, was super intriguing. Walk in the front door, and MY MAN! From the outside it seriously doesn't look like this place should exist. But it does! It has all the personality of a neighborhood dive bar and all the best things you love about your favorite karaoke bar. Because, yeah, this is a karaoke bar. And it's a great one. But karaoke is not what makes Water's Edge a great bar. It's not even the food, which by the way is phenomenal (try the pepper jack cheese cubes!). What makes Water's Edge a great bar is what makes any bar great - it's the bartenders. Daniel was engaging, friendly, funny, and -- most importantly -- he actually appeared to love his job. The crazy thing is that attitude seemed to permeate the staff, even as the night went on. (Cause yeah, of course we stayed.) And that, my friends, is evidence of one thing - a good boss. After meeting Ozzie, her infectious enthusiasm and charm made it clear to us that she IS the reason Water's Edge is now our go-to for every future visit to the KC area, and we may even be so bold as to claim it as our own neighborhood bar, as long as it's cool that we consider it a pretty big neighborhood. So when you see that gravel alleyway that looks the the driveway of a mobile home, that's where you need to turn in. Inside is a big open area with a square-shaped bar in the center. The walls are covered in hundreds of photos of the bar's loyal patrons. The bartender lamented to me about how the bar business is really hurting in Chillicothe because so many of the town's young people have been moving away. "We have really low overhead, though, so we'll be fine," she added. She's probably right. Most of the other bars in town have either recently closed or changed hands. But the Traphouse has been going strong for years. A big part of that is that of those that have survived, it's the most "real".
