First visit to Captain Rattys. Heard great things about it. We were hoping to sit rooftop but there was a large group up there. Sat in the room with the bar. The barstool behind me was literally touching my chair. It was a bit tight in there. Service was slow (due to the large party upstairs we were told). Luckily we were not in a rush. Cold Crab Nachos were good.. loved the wontons chips! Can't believe I'm even going to say this, but there was actually too much cheese on the nachos. Great sized shrimp on the shrimp scampi. Tasted great. Burger was cooked medium rare, as ordered, but didn't have much flavor. Fries were really good! We had the salad bar as well, and there was a nice selection on it. Mediocre at best. Service was fantastic though! I have 3 stars for that and The fried pickles and fries green tomatoes were delish. My mom had a crab cake and she said it was good. I had the bounty fried seafood (shrimp,oysters, scallops) and it was luke warm when it got to the table. However the scallops were tender and not over cooked. The cocktail sauce had entirely too much horseradish in it. I got a side salad with the basil and sun dried tomato dressing, that dressing tasted nothing like sun dried tomato or basil! It was a syrupy almost ketchup based dressing I could make a better dressing in my own kitchen. My husband got a ribeye and it wasn't even seasoned (i tried it). overall I wasn't super impressed with the food. It was expensive too, 206$ for 6 people (including 2 kids). Sunday afternoon we took a 3 hour ride to New Bern from Sandbridge Va. We love the quaintness of this small town. We found a Restaurant that we had walked by before and decided to try it. We ordered Clam Chowder that was a C+, but it was salty and tasted like there was bacon fat in it . The food was atrocious! The salad bar for $4.95 added to your entree. It was not appetizing in appearance. You had to reach over everything to get a scoop of olives, no beets were left and everything was very picked over. I came back to find my sirloin tips for $21.99 sitting. Not even warm. There was a layer of a coating over the gravy like it had been sitting for a while. The meat was stew meat with grizzle, not sirloin tips. What was supposed to be a Demi glaze was a flour based meat gravy. It was horrible, I tried to eat one piece and it made me sick to my stomach. My husband had the same only over mashed potatoes and he tried to see if eating it on the dry potatoes would help but it didn't. He told me he forced it down. The waitress tried to serve us the wrong things 2-3 times. She never checked if we wanted a refill on coffee which he didn't finish, or if there was something wrong since I only ate one bite out of my entree. When they did ask I told them it was bad and they gave me $5.95 off a $21.99 meal that I barely touched. The only thing that was good was my Apple hard cider, it really smelled like golden apples. 2 stars is really too good for this place. I will never enter that establishment again. When we were walking out, a couple asked how it was and my husband couldn't help but tell them no don't go there. It was a total waste of $75.00 including tip. read more

We were drawn into trying Captain Ratty's due to the amazing menu options. The apple cider mimosa and apple cider bourbon with Carmel drizzled on the rim were delicious! I tried the fried green tomato BLT and was worried it wouldn't be enough food for dinner. I was pleasantly surprised, it was plenty and very filling. So interesting our hotel (name kept secure) said not to go to Captain Rattys and go somewhere else on that street. But boy were they wrong! The Low Country Boil packed with delish seafood. Huge shrimp - very fresh, good number of muscles and clams in a delish broth! My spouse had fish and chips - thick and large flounder filets lightly fried. To top it all of a soup and salad bar included with dinner. Everything was fresh and looking delish. Honestly the soup ( and no it was not clam chowder) but a delish Tuscan Veg soup. This place was a total blind spot we chose, having never been to the New Bern area. The servers were kind, attentive and quick. Even on a Sunday night we were seated in 5 minutes and served within 15. The food was absolutely scrumptious. I got the Cannonball Shrimp appetizer and the Fish and Chips entree. The popcorn shrimp was lush and crispy as was the cod, the fries were seasoned well too. My husband got the plain shrimp for his appetizer (which was juicy and seasoned with Old Bay) and then his entree was Crabcakes and Shrimp. His crabcake had a lot of meat and seasoning; not too much bread/filler. The outdoor seating was clean and comfortable. We will definitely be back! read more

Considering the reviews, I wanted to give this place a try. First of all, despite the restaurant's claim to be a seafood restaurant, the menu was not at all what I had expected. I guess I had hoped for more choices. The Choose Three Seafood Basket, which costs $19.95, is the only dish I want to focus on. It included a tiny bowl with perhaps five oysters in it and two skewers each holding four little scallops and five medium-sized shrimp. It also comes with one side, which I decided to be the bland coleslaw. The fact that this is all I received for $20 astonished me when it first came out. It should have been embarrassing for the chef and restaurant owners to serve this food. I've had both good and bad seafood over the course of my life, but this was by far the worst. The shrimp was very overcooked and the oysters were also terrible. Not to mention, the $20 they charge you is not at all reasonable. The onion rings that someone else with me ordered and the water were the best parts of the entire meal. Extremely disappointing for a location that calls itself a seafood restaurant. read more

I had gone to New Bern with a list of restaurants that had been recommended. Ratty's wasn't on it, but it was a few steps away from a noisy recommended restaurant with a long wait. We opted to eat at Ratty's and it was a good decision. We were greeted quickly and seated in the smallish, bricked-walled dining room with a bar along one side. It was nicely quiet, a positive change from the noise of the other restaurant. I would have like more dining options, but that wasn't enough of a problem to reduce the rating. I had the captain's burger with sweet potato fries and my dining partner had the Bounty (fried oysters, shrimp & scallops). Both were plentiful and delicious. There were 8 of us during the 2023 Christmas holiday and we all were very disappointed with the food. Three of us ordered Filet Mignon and were served Ribeye that was well done & cold. I was really looking forward to a great meal at Captain Ratty's, and decided to order their filet. Their steaks are described as certified Angus, and I was hoping for a delicious, tender piece of beef. The waitress accidentally put in an order for the ribeye. I didn't mind her mistake when my plate arrived and we discovered that it wasn't the filet. I thought that the ribeye should be great too. It was not. I could barely cut the ribeye. I had to saw away at it with the steak knife and really chew it. It was not at all what a good ribeye should be like. I had ordered the salad bar with my meal, and was hoping that because of the mistake, they might offer to comp my salad, or something like that. But no mention was made. If the ribeye had been worth eating, or if they had offered to do something because of the mistake, I wouldn't be writing this review, because I know that everyone makes mistakes. But I could have cooked a much better steak at home for a lot less than $33! Disappointed. read more

Very cool vibe in historic building in a cute downtown area. We had the clam chowder soup New England style with bacon added and was delicious, one of the better clam chowders I've had even when in New England. We also had the calamari, my husband said it was good but he has been ruined by eating fresh calamari in Italy, he said he wished the breading was lighter. I also had the alpine salad not only was it huge you could share between two people as a meal, it was fresh and so good on a hot day I had the homemade balsamic which really complemented it. It's the Christmas season...with a staffing shortage...and it's a Saturday...so I understand long waits and high emotions. I GET it...but, that's zero excuse for rude management and poor customer service. I arrived at 5:45pm, put my name on a waitlist, provided the hostess my cellphone number, and agreed to the hour wait. No biggie. After about 30 minutes, my party of 5 and I decided to check-in with the hostess...and this is where things went down hill. The hostess at first claimed that she contacted me and I had told her to cancel my reservation. This never happened. Then the hostess claimed she called my cellphone and left me a message, which again, never happened. There were no missed calls OR voicemails on my cellphone, which I consistently checked throughout our already 45 minute wait. So, needless to say, not only were me and my dinner guests lied to, our reservation was bumped. I asked the hostess to confirm my phone number, and she refused to not only show me the waitlist, but confirm she placed my name on it to begin with. At this point, the pointed and extremely rude manager stepped in to inform my party that we could put our names back on the list, and that we could wait another TWO HOURS to be seated...all while my screaming two year old was having a meltdown because it's dinner time and the inadequacies of the Captain Ratty's staff postponed our breaking of bread. I've eaten at this establishment a few times, but never again will I ever step foot in there. I'm appalled at the outward disrespect of the management, and incompetency of the hosting staff. read more

Gave phone number was told we would get a call when table available. After a hour, went back to check status. Were told they called and we said cancel. Then were told they left a voicemail. With no response, they said they canceled us. No call, no missed call, no voicemail from them. After reviewing their list our name was not on it. The hostess said we could put our name on the list and it would be two hour wait. Well, if you want clam chowder, this is the place to get it! It's creamy and full of clams! It was the clam chowder at lunch that brought us back for dinner. However, we were disappointed. if you want seafood, I would suggest going elsewhere. My husband and mother-in-law's Crab cakes were both overcooked and the shrimp didn't look quite done. For the price, don't serve frozen French fries ! . My salmon was pretty good but the salad was a bit wilted. Our waitress, Jennifer, was new. Visiting quaint New Bern and my sister RAVED about the clam chowder here. Ordered some and a cobb salad. It was awful I don't know what that chowder was but it was pink and the salad had old dry chicken, old ice lettuce lots of brown leaved, not ripe avocado, NO bacon and that blue cheese dressing was out of a bad bottle. The menu seemed lackluster and we were out celebrating our little man's birthday- BUT they had steak and he wanted steak. When the food arrived, I was BLOWN AWAY!
